Compressor 1.2.1 - no custom mpeg2

hi there,
i'm unable to make custom mpeg 2 settings.
when adding a new setting, i choose mpeg-2.
in the encoder tab, i only have a rate selection for 23.98, 29.97. and automatic. the other settings are greyed out.
i can't even change the bit rates or nothing. all differnt codecs ie H.264, mpeg-4, mpeg-1, have an option to adjust the frame rates and the bit rates.
i have uninstalled and re-installed a few times. and contacted apple. they told me just to look on this discussion board.....
any suggestions?
  Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I was under the impression that MPEG-2 encoder came with Compressor 1. I never used Compressor until I upgraded to FCS and started using (or rather trying to use) Compressor 2.

  • Compressor 3.5 and HDV to MPEG2 stream?

In the previous version of Compressor I wasn't able to get a decent MPEG2 for DVD from HDV. I found myself compressing the HDV to ProRes, then using the ProRes to make the MPEG2. It wasn't that good either.
I'm wondering if Compressor 3.5 is getting a decent HDV to MPEG2?

If you're going to perform HD to SD downconversions be sure to apply the recent Pro Application support update.

  • Can Compressor 4 encode LPCM audio in MPEG2?

Before I shell out money buying Compressor 4.... is LPCM audio an option when encoding video in multiplexed MPEG 2 format?  I can't see it in the user manual... just MP2 formats like AC3.
Lowly iDVD encodes its MPEG2 video with LPCM audio - so surely Compressor can?
    Thanks.

Well, given the source material is usually DV or VHS then MPEG-2 at 8 Mbps has almost no visual degradation compared to the original (very little that my eye can pick up), but it produces files about 15-20% the original file size.  So it's perfect for this application, and I'm sure you'd agree, sufficient for archiving DV material.
In my vocabulary is "very heavily compressed" means the result is less than 10% of the original file size.
It still doesn't explain why Compressor would omit what seems to me to be a very basic audio encoding scheme.  It doesn't get much more basic than LPCM.  Surely if one is fussy about video compression, one should also be fussy about audio compression and find that AC3 and similar schemes remove too much audio detail, particularly when the content is music.

  • Custom Compressor Settings Missing

Under Share>Export Using Compressor Settings none of my custom settings are there. They appear fine in Compressor itself. Any idea how I can fix this? I've tried exporting, then deleting them and reimporting - nothing. Thanks.

I don't know the cause but it ids definitely worth trashing the FCP X preferences with

  • Compressor renders mpeg-2  correctly

I'm trying to compress few videos to mpeg-2 for broadcasting but Compressor 3.5 makes them all black. I used the same settings as with older Compressor. The audio is not playing right eater. Can anyone help me a bit? I'm in a hurry here.
    Thanks
    Mikko K

Ok, i have found a way to make changes to the audio settings. First create a customized MPEG2 setting of your liking. Copy the setting to the desktop and open it with textedit. Locate the 48Khz sampling rate and have it changed to the sampling rate of your choice or in my case the audio data rate which by default is at 38400. Save the setting file and drop it back into the custom settings folder and viola. Be sure to delete the old setting file first prior to import.
    Hope this helps.

  • Compressor: How do you keep the file name the same?

    Hello,
I am wondering if there is a way in Compressor to compress a file WITHOUT changing its name. I don't want the spacifics in the new media title
    For instance, A007_C010_0216HX.mov becomes A007_C010_0216HX-Apple ProRes 422.mov
    Thank you!

I am doing this on Compressor 4, but believe this also applies to Compressor 3 - create a new custom destination.
When you create that new custom destination you will be given the option of the naming convention you want to use:
    Default destination includes appended name:
    Custon Destination does not:
Once you have set that up, make that custom destination the default by changing the default destination in Compressor preferences.

  • Where are compressor settings kept?

I have Compressor and some settings I would like to share with some fellow educators who do not have it, but do have FCP X. I was hoping to find the location where the Compressor settings are stored and add extras. And would they need to be in a folder labelled Custom, or just thrown in? Or is the whole idea not going to work? Thanks for any insight.

I should have mentioned earlier - that is the location of custom settings that you have created. The default settings that it ships with are stored inside the application bundle.
So if you don't have Compressor, you can't create custom settings and so you won't have that directory.
If you have an earlier version of Compressor the settings are stored at ~/Library/Application Support/Compressor.

  • Export to MPEG2 with 4:2:2 chroma...  is it possible? Where are the setting

I don't see how you can specify colour sampling in compressor... can you export to MPEG2 format with 4:2:2 from an uncompressed 10bit 4:2:2 file???
Final Cut cannot directly output mpeg2 so i'm interested if anyone else knows of a compression program for MAC where you can be SURE it's exporting 4:2:2 or you can specify in an option?
    Thanks!

    Hey Bono11,
unfortunately, compressor only has the MPEG2, DVD compliant algorithm.
what this mean for you is:
resolutions of 720x480 or 720x576 in 4:2:0 that are interlaced (MainProfile@MainLevel).
however, the newsest version of Compressor also offers MainProfile@HighLevel with limitations of 1920x1080 in 4:2:0 that are progressive which can be used for "HD DVD".
the bottom line is that you cannot use compressor to create 4:2:2 MPEG2 files.
you would need a MPEG2 encoder, NOT a DVD MPEG2 encoder (like compressor).
of course you can create other files that do have 4:2:2 since compressor, at it's root is a transcoder.
also, when you look for an MPEG2 encoder, it will be a litter steep, price wise.
why would you want to create a 4:2:2 file anyway. are you creating a mastering file? does it have to be a Program stream or can it be a transport stream file?

  • CS5.5 will not export MPEG2 Transport stream with mpg extension?

I am creating video for the local cable access channel. I have been using the MPEG2 NTSC DV High Quality preset. That preset outputs MPEG layer 2 audio. The cable access coordinator says that those files will not play audio from the Soloist media server, even though the specs for that server calls for MPEG layer 2 audio. Those files play ok in Windows Media Player. When analyzed with AVIcodec, GSpot, and VideoInspector, they all show there is MPEG layer 2 audio. The server shows no audio at all in one of it's reports.
I had previously been using an older version of Final Cut Pro and Compressor. I no longer have access to that computer but I believe I had been exporting a Program Stream. The access channel's documentation calls for Transport Stream. When exporting Transport Stream MuliplexingMPEG2 video in CS5.5 Media Encoder, the output file has the .m2t extension. These 3 codec analyzers aren't recognizing this as MPEG2. I assume that the video server will not recognize this m2t file extension at all. Final Cut's compressor did output the Program Stream MPEG2 with the mpg extension.
Is there a way to export Transport Stream MPEG2 video with MPEG layer 1 audio and have an .mpg file extension on the resulting file?
Also, anyone familiar enough with PID values to know if that could have any bearing on why the MPEG layer 2 audio is not being detected in that video server when I use the MPEG2 NTSC High Quality presets?
    Thanks for any help.

    Jeff,
I am still waiting to here back from the access channel coordinator to see if the test file encoded this way would be recognized and play correctly. The files can only be tested when the server is off-line so it takes awhile for a response. Thanks for your help. I'll post when I get word of that file status.

  • Speeding up DVD encoding time in Compressor 4?

Hello there, I wonder if anyone can help - I am transferring some camcorder tapes to DVD on my 2010 Mac Pro. My hardware captures in many formats but not mpeg 2.  As this is the encoding used for DVDs I presumed Compressor would be quicker to convert mpeg2 files to DVD than say mp4's (?). So I bought an mpeg 2 capture device specially. I then crop, trim the mpeg 2 files in Compressor and convert to DVD but it still takes ages? Is it because I have added edits and crops that it has to be re-encode to a completely new mpeg 2 file or is that just what compressor does to mpeg 2 files anyway? I seem to remember Toast converting an mpeg 2 file to DVD really quickly in the past when there was no editing or changes.
So in summary does anyone know if there is no advantage using mpeg 2 files when editing and converting to DVD in compressor, if not what format would be best? I presume uncompressed DV files might be better.
    Any help much appreciated!
    cheers

Okay thanks for the reply, that is actually a pretty good way to explain i! Am I right that if there was no edits, a dvd would encode quicker using an mpeg 2 file as source?
Don't know, never have used this workflow. Maybe someone else can answer.
I presume I used an mpeg 2 file and just cropped the last 2 minutes off the end it would again need to be re-encoded?
Yes, AFAIK. Make any change and my understanding is that the mpeg GOP (Group Of Pictures)  will need to be rebuilt for the file.
My other capture device captures in mp4, so guess I will just import it direct into compressor and do any edits there, as no advantage using mpeg 2 capture.
Using compressor to trim the clips is, I guess, OK. mp4 is a much newer codec the mpeg2 so may be a better solution for your workflow. If I had the option of capturing in mpeg 2 or mp4, I'd choose mp4.
But keep checking back as someone who has more experience with may be able to give better advice.
When I wanted to move years of home DV tapes to DVD, I bought a set top DVD Recorder from Panasonic and just hooked up the camera and went directly to the  DVD, pausing the recording to edit out the stuff I didn't want.

  • Compressor 2.1 crashing

Compressor 2.1 started crashing on launch for me. It crashes standalone and export form FCP 5.1.1.
I didn't update anything and the other Pro apps work as expected.
I've already tried these two Apple tips:
Removing the /Library/Receipts/ProRuntime.pkg receipt and /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ProKit.framework file and then download and install Pro Application Support 3.1 for Tiger.
And go to /Library/Receipts and, if found, drag the following files to the Trash:
    • Compressor.pkg
    • Qmaster_Applications.pkg
    • Qmaster_Frameworks.pkg
    • Qmaster_Plugins.pkg
    • Qmaster_Services.pkg
Then, go to /Applications and, if found, drag the following files to the Trash:
    • Compressor
    • Apple QMaster
    • Apple Qadministrator
From your install disc, reinstall Compressor and Apple Qmaster (in custom install window, make sure that Compressor and Apple Qmaster items are checked). Once you have reinstalled the Compressor and QMaster applications and services, install all updates using Software Update and restart your computer.
    Then I repaired permissions
    Didn't work.
Compressor 2.1 still crashes on launch.
    Any other ideas?

I've finally got Compressor to stop crashing on launch.
I booted into Safe mode, and Compressor worked fine.
Then I eliminated the start-up items Qmaster and Iloc from the user Startup Items folder.
I also disabled the Login item Default folder.
    Rebooted and Compressor worked fine.
I added back QMaster and Compressor was OK.
    Added back iLoc Compressor OK
I downloaded the latest version of Default Folder and first uninstalled it, and then reinstalled the most current version.
    Rebooted and Compressor didn't crash.
    Rebooted again and no crash.
Maybe an out of date Default Folder was causing the crash.
Other than that, I believe everthing was the same.

  • Is compressing in fcpx faster than compressor 4?

2 questions, mpeg2 and h.264. If I use the share menu of fcpx will it be any faster because fcpx is "64" bit vs compressor with is 32 bit for mpeg2 or h.264????

The very interesting part is: Compressor is 'old' technology. And in the old days, to allow a single app to 'grab' all computation power probably was no smart idea => you have to set this, internal cluster, 'manually'.
nowadays, with 12cores and GPU-accelaration and stuff, the faster the better - imho!
so, if I would be the engineer in charge, I would FCPX allow to grab 'the whole 9 yards' just for encoding.
... indeed, maybe we see with OS10.9, GrandCentral, etc etc etc a better integration of all the horse-power actual machines offer.

  • No audio after using Compressor

    Hello folks,
I have NTSC DV video, which I am trying to compress using Compressor. I am using DVD MPEG2 5.0 Mbps 2 pass compression with Dolby Digital audio at 192 Kbps. Everything seems to work fine, compressed video has much smaller size, quality is good... but there is no audio. Any idea what I do wrong?
    Thank you for any advise.

    Hello.
When using Compressor to encode to DVD, 2 separate files are created, m2v (video) and ac3 (audio). They are not muxed together. You then import both of those files into DVD Studio Pro, and combine them on a video track there.
A really good website that will walk you through the workflows associated with Compressor and DVDSP is DVD StepByStep
What is your target delivery source? DVD, web?

  • MPEG2 file pauses on playback.

I have been using Compressor for several years to create mpeg2 files for my playout server. Using the same settings I have always used I ended up with a file that pauses about halfway through playback in quicktime. The file is 2 hours long and the middle half of the program shows a paused picture (not the same frame everytime) and then it will suddenly start playing the file again towards the end. Feels like a quicktime problem but I have other files encoded after the problem file. I have tried exporting from FCP again, encoding on a different computer all with the same result. Anyone else ever see this?
    -Jason

simply export as quicktime at a very slow frame rate (for instance for 24fps, export at 6fps) then put into final cut or similar and speed up to full speed. i'm in the process of doing this now, and hopefully it should work. it means the export is less processor intensive, so there is no lag at slower frame rate, then speeding up gives you the finished work. hopefully...

  • COMPRESSOR QUALITY

Recently used compressor to compress a weeding to mpeg2 using doble pass 6.0 to 7.0 max bit rate and ac3 dolby
    make authoring in dvd sp2
    burn the dvd
The final result is a poorly compressed video.
for example in the part you see people dancing, (movement) some artifacts appear, like pixels, and other stuff, it really dont look professional.
it looks more than vhs quality.
Now I have to recompress the video.
will do from fcp a self contained quicktime and then compress to mpeg 2 in dvdsp2 I get much better results..
    any idea.??
    Thanks!

dvdsp uses the same engine as compressor, so the fact that it looks decent in dvdsp and not in compressor means to me that your settings (under preferences in dvdsp) are better than what you are setting in compressor. Look at your settings in dvdsp to get an idea what settings you are using and if you are doing cbr or vbr. then take into compressor, tweek settings similar to those in dvdsp and make audio .ac3 (dolby 2.0) and you should be good.
