Compressor 2.0.1 and Mpeg2. What to do?

I know this has been discussed to death... I have searched and read alot of posts. I find posts that link to other posts.. that have now dropped off the forum. So it has been a little hard to get a solid idea of where to go from this point. I'm hoping a few of you can chime in here with your opinion on the current capability of compressor for MPEG2 2-pass VBR encoding, and how to achieve acceptable results.
I have had problems encoding 2-pass VBR mpeg2 files. I get blocks that bounce up and down in certain scenes. I have attributed this to the known problems with compressor, and have been using 1-pass CBR at about 7.0mbps. The results are ok but much softer than the original footage on DV Tape.
Is the situation really as bad as it seems with compressor? Should I invest in a different encoder for encoding MPEG2 for DVD, and if so which encoder... and how much am I going to have to spend?
err.. I'm frustrated with the whole thing!
Thanks,
Matt

I get blocks that bounce up and down in certain scenes.
That doesn't sound much like what I'm seeing with Compressor's two-pass VBR. The only unresolved quality-of-image problem I've seen in Compressor 2 is the random occurrence of compression artifacts and these look just like the type of defect that you see when you use a very low bit rate setting (in fact, based upon my analysis with Digigami's MPressionist that's exactly what they are). So, you may select a high-quality 6.2Mbps setting but intermittently and rarely you may see a few frames that look like they were done at 2Mbps (or similar).
Are you sure you aren't seeing the defects that are caused by using Compressor v1.X presets with Compressor 2? That particular problem caused small to medium sized blocks of white or near white to "dance" around in parts of your MPEG2 encodings. This latter problem is avoided by simply removing or not using presets that were created in earlier versions of Compressor (pre-version 2.0). If that could be your problem, refer to the following link from Apple:
http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?linkprocess_@@.68b5fbd7
As for the two-pass VBR compression artifacts I mentioned earlier, some installations seem to have them while others do not (or the ones that seem not to have the problem just haven't noticed the random artifacts).
In my experience, the degree of problems with two-pass VBR seem to vary from job to job. Some sequences may only be very mildly degraded (or visually unaffected) while others will have obvious and distracting artifacts. I think it may depend upon the nature of the video and the length of your sequences. Of course, those two variables can combine in a number of ways, so you really can't predict what may or may not turn out okay.
To be fair, however, you've got to note that some users seem pretty confident that their systems are free from this problem. Some even claim that Compressor 2 produces better output than did previous versions of the software. I've also read one review that was written by a professional videographer that said that Compressor 2 produced the finest MPEG2 output that he had ever seen (posted on the internet by a commercial, pro-oriented media outlet) . It seems pretty obvious that your so-called mileage may vary.

These are elementary streams and they would be used by DVD authoring apps that use them for reasons like foreign language capability. Examples would be DVD Studio Pro, Adobe Encore, Toast.
The most straightforward way to burn your DVD is either to use the Share feature in FCP or the Batch Template feature in Compressor.
If you can find a boxed copy of iLife (try Amazon), it should have iDVD as part of the suite of apps. iDVD offers far more complete authoring capability than FCP or C4. iDVD  doesn't work with elementary streams; you'd just drag in your HD movie and you'd be good to go.

  • Tiger / Compressor 1.2.1 and MPEG-2 output - How to avoid jumpy video.

This post is to summarise my experience with compressor and mpeg2 transcoding in the hope that it will save someone else time and help them avoid similar problems.
I recently transcoded a series of mpeg2 files to a lower compression setting using compressor and derivations of the standard high quality presets. While the encodes were generally excellent, I noticed that in all cases, near the end, there was some jitter on large pan scenes.
After further examination, I found that in all cases, in every sequence of 4 frames, the first three frames were OK, but the fourth was a copy of the 3rd, hence the jitter in pan scenes.
I then rechecked the whole file for this behaviour, and found that it was only present at the end of the file. Each time it started at roughly the same point which was about 1.4Gb into the source file.
I reencoded the files using QT 7 and the same settings, and there was no problem.
Given that the 2*2.5 G5 doing the encoding has 1.5Gb of ram, I suspect that compressor has a memory issue, although I cannot confirm this.
I have also seen problems on small files encoded in a batch. These same files encoded alone did not show any problems.
I would therefore recommend that when transcoding mpeg2 to lower bitrates with compressor:
    1. Free the maximum possible system RAM (reboot before job?)
    2. Keep source files smaller than system physical ram
    3. Dont run batches.
    4. If you do use batches, and see problems with the second or 3rd job, rencode alone.
I may be way off of the mark, but there are many posts about similar problems and so I hope it may help.
BTW, these problems also seem to occur in compressor2 and may or may not be due to the same issue.
Perhaps someone from Apple would care to comment?

What is the source framerate and size? What was the origianl source material that the original mpeg2 files were compressed from?
Sounds like a pulldown issue. This might happen if the original mpeg2 files were encoded at 23.98 and you transcoded them to 29.97. Although you should notice it throughout the entire clip, not just at the end.

  • Compressor doesn't open and show windows properly

Haven't used Compressor for a while and when I open it I don't get the windows, just the bar at the top. Choosing a windows layout doesn't work and although you can switch on the inspector, settings/destination and history windows I can't display the window that you drag the files, settings and destinations into. I've tried re-installing, no good. All other FCS programs work fine, before and after re-install, anyone know what's going on?

Tried all the above suggestions, just had to properly uninstall FCS with FCS Remover then re-install. Window display is fine now but I'm not sure if it's actually doing anything, submit a job but nothing seems to be produced ...looking into that.

  • Questions about H264 and MPEG2 settings in CS5

I am working on a composition based on the setting 1920x1080 (1.00) 29.97fps. I encounter problems with the H264 and MPEG2 formats at the output module:
    - If I choose MPEG2 as the format, a Settings Mismatch sign appears. It reads,'Output file will be resized to 720x576 (1.46PAR) to meet format constraints. Warnings: Frame rates will be adjusted from 29.97 fps to 25 fps to meet format constraints.' But when I export the same composition to Premiere, I am able to render it out as a MPEG2 1920x1080 (1.00) 29.97fps using Media Decoder without adjusting the setting at all. So what is the MPEG2 default format setting? Is it different from software to software even within Adobe? Can I change that in AE?
    - If I choose H264 as the format, I am able to export the file in the same setting as the composition. But I wouldn't be able to play the file on Windows Media Player when done. The note says it may require codec. Does it mean other people will have troubles playing the file also? Did I do something wrong with the setting?

Thank you for both of your responses. I wasn't actually mixing up H264 and MPEG2 formats. I was just trying to export a composition as either one of them. But the H264 file is not playable. Still dunno why. And the MPEG2 format sets the file as 720x576. If I re-size the file, the frame rate is still not right; and I don't know how to adjust that. Combined with the audio problem I 'd mentioned on the other post, now I always have to use Premiere to import the composition, render it, and then export it to Media Decoder.

  • Video Output from compressor is still fuzzy and delayed on my site

My web video output is choppy and pixelated and I'm shooting on an excellent HD camera 1080i
I setup compressor for HD 564X960 and the output is 78Mb (this is a 1 minute and 32 seconds video)
I then us flash to convert it to a Flash 8 high quality flv
the result is crap. Its blurred and choppy on my site. I just watched the HD presentation on the new SDK for iPhone and the window was huge and the quality was fantastic?
    What's the secret ?

Ok, a number of problems here.
First are you using Compressor to compress your video, then Flash to compress it again to a FLV? If so, that is causing a lot of your problems right there. You are double compressing a video (never a good idea). Take you uncompressed video file into Flash and create your FLV.
Second, you are using Flash to compress your video. Flash is horrible at compression. Sorenson Squeeze will produce much better results. Or if you are creating H.264 files, just use Compressor to create a H.264 file and then change the extension to .flv
Finally, if the quality is bad then you might need to increase the bitrate. What did you set your bitrate to?

  • Compressor is extremely slow, and I am a novice user

    Hi,
I am having major problems with compressor 4.  I edit videos for online distribution.  The can be anywhere from 5-40 mins long.
Since 2009 I have used IMovie.  The video is shot and edting in HD format.  In IMOVIE a 5 Min HD vid can be about 600 MB when exported to a MOV.  It took less then 1 hour to export.
I have recently updated to Final Cut Pro and using Compressor to export since these files are now huge (20 min is about 1.5GB), again I movie only took about 2 hours on the 20 min 1.5GB for the MOV.
Now compressor for the 20 min movie is taking 13 HOURS!  for the 20 min 1.5 GB to do the MOV.  And taking 3 hours for the 5 Min 600 MB.
What am I doing wrong here?
    Using 2009 IMac, 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    thanks!!

Could you fill in some more details about your online distribution?
HD can cover a variety of formats. Since you mentioned iMovie, I'm going to guess that the videos were shot with a prosumer or consumer camera, in which case the codecs are likely h.264 or AVCHD. If you created optimized media for your FCP projects, and exported Pro Res, those files will be exceptionally large.
Depending on your needs, you may be able to export to a delivery format directly from FCP – either using the HTTP Streaming preset or a video sharing preset like Vimeo's.
Compressor is not fast. But there are some things that you can do to speed it up. For HD material, Frame Controls is automatically turned on. Depending on you quality requirements, it may be acceptable to turn them off, which we speed things up considerably. Another thing that may speed up things is to actually add a step and export a Quick Time file (master) and bring that into Compressor instead of sending to Compressor. (FWIW, I find that faster.) If your computer had more than 2 cores, I'd also suggest setting up a quick cluster, but I doubt it would help with 2 cores.
But I would try a couple of tests on a short section of a project and see what effect those changes make.
Post back if any of this isn't clear.
    Good luck.

  • Difference between mpeg2 and mpeg2 dvd

I want to build a DVD project using 1920X1080p footage. I would like to know the best export settings for doing so.
When I choose the mpeg2 dvd option I see that it adds black bars to the sides of my footage, mpeg2 however still fits the frame perfectly. Can I just use mpeg2 to export a project to be burn to DVD, and what is the difference between the two?
    Thanks in advance

    PeterAnsell wrote:
Ok, understood, but it terms of the difference between MPEG2-DVD (with the black bars) and MPEG2 (without them); can either be used to build a DVD project? I'd rather not have the black bars.
    Thanks for your time
To clarify, MPEG-2 DVD is DVD-compliant. When you add that file to Encore, it will NOT need to transcode (get re-encoded again). A regular MPEG-2 file, or any other format for that matter, will be transcoded to a DVD-compliant MPEG-2 format. So stick with MPEG-2 DVD.
About the black bars, I believe you are referring to the narrow pillarboxing seen in the Output Preview? Those are a by-product of the math not coming out exactly when converting from HD to SD. The default setting is "Scale to Fit", just change to "Scale to Fill" to eliminate the bars. I believe that Fill option started with CS6, older versions may require that you set cropping but I don't know the recommended crop settings.

  • Compressor 3.5.2 and H.264 Issue

Lately I've been having a problem encoding H.264. I'm using a cluster within my MacPro. After submitting the job, Compressor never utilizes 100% of the eight cores, going up and down around 20%. Also the estimated process time keeps going up, and it brings the machine's performance almost to a halt. Canceling the job never finishes, usually requiring a hard reboot. I've only seen this issue with Apple's H.264 codec. I had no problem with the third party X.264 codec and MPEG2 codecs. The source file does no seem to be a contributing factor as it occurs with any type of source I've tried. Thanks for any advice.

You have much less than the recommended ram.
You want at least 1 gig per core.
Reset the cluster to 4 instances.
    That's even too
much because some of the ram is utilized by other processes. You'll have more consistent luck with 2 for now. But that's better than not completing the render.
    Get more ram.

They can share an Apple ID, but each device must use a different email address when setting up FaceTime.  Create a gmail email (or hotmail, or ...) address and use that on one of the devices when you setup FaceTime.
You don't actually have to use the 'new' email address, it is probably just used as an index to reference the correct device when initiating a call via the FaceTime server.
