Compressor 2 what works for me

I've had my nightmares with compressor 2 and FCP5 on my Quad G5 and finally found a combo that works . I use compressor only to compress the audio to AC3 format. Using it to compress video results in failure with a Quicktime error of zero. So, I export my FCP sequence as a Quicktime reference file and import that asset into DVDSP4. Then I drag only the video component to the tracks timeline. Then I drag the previously compressed AC3 file to the audio portion of the timeline. In the DVDSP4 preferences pane I set mode to 2 pass VBR and the bit rate to 560/length in mins of my video. Max bit rate is set to 1.2Mbps higher. I let DVDSP use the compressor to build the project with great looking video. My 1hr. 46min video took 1hr 10 min. to compress. The AC3 file took less than 10 mins. to compress. The Quad rocks!

It is not nice of you to make us G4 users envious, especially at Christmas.
Glad the Quad works fast. I am propagandizing to my wife whenever I can about needing a faster computer. I am hoping that when the Intel chip is used, there will be some improvement, and ok rather unlikely, but even lower in price.

  • Here's what worked for me...

    Here's what worked for me:
    1) I opened iTunes and in Options, I selected iTunes as the default music player for my computer (it wasn't). (I even uninstalled RealPlayer and WinAmp.)
    2) I uninstalled iTunes and iPod, and reinstalled using the newer versions on the Apple site.
    3) I basically followed this advice:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=291183&tstart=0
Which was basically to leave my iPod connected to the computer while rebooting. The first 2 times it didn't work, I forgot to put iTunes in the start menu, so that it opens when I reboot. I put iTunes and iTunes Helper (whatever that is) in the start menu (I used WinPatrol to do so, available for free here: http://www.winpatrol.com/), and then rebooted, and after a couple of tries, like magic iTunes opened, recognized my iPod, and updated it, and then, for the first time, without freezing my system, told me it was okay to disconnect.
It even worked while still running my regular systray apps, like McAfee VirusScan, Ewido Anti-Malware, Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta, and SpywareBlaster, so those were not the issue. I get the impression you need to boot it once so it recognizes the iPod and does that handshake thing, and hopefully after that it'll always do the same. We'll see...
I hope this helps someone, b/c its been a frustrating day working through all this, and I know a lot of others are still trying to get it solved. And thanks to jcog for posting his solution, that helped me, and hopefully this will help someone else...

it worked until the next time I synced the iPod, and then back to the freeze up. Next thing I tried was this Microsoft help page:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976
which advises on several things, all of which seem helpful, but the thing still freezes up. I can sync the iPod, then the system freezes and I have to reboot. So, I now believe Apple will have to issue a patch for these bugs when using the new 5G iPods with WinXP.

  • Snow Leopard Printing Woes - what worked for me

I found many print problems posted EVERYWHERE from every printer manufacturer and model and many solutions and some worked for some people. None worked for me.
I have a HP Laserjet 2100M, which is old, but is listed as compatible with SL. I cannot part with it, as it is a true laser printer, not a monochrome, which means when I need to colour separate say a blue and red document, it prints as solid, not grayscale. It has printed 44,820 pages for me over the years, with only laser cartridge replacement as an expense. As well, I cannot find anything but monochrome for a replacement.
It worked on my old iMac G5 running Leopard, however, when I got my new iMac running Snow Leopard, I got "Printer Offline" message and it would not go online and while some solution ideas got it to print, sometimes, it was only good for one or two jobs and then would stop again, or it would say printing and nothing would print.
Here is what worked for me:
I disconnected my printer's usb and power supply, reset printer system.
Went to Macintosh HD-Library-printers-PPDs-contents-resources and deleted all of the HP Drivers.
I got my HP 2100 series driver from my old iMac and put that back in the resources folder and emptied trash.
    I shut down my computer.
    Replugged in power to printer.
    Started up computer.
After fully launched, I connected my USB cable for the printer. I went to add printer and it came up right away and said new software update was available for my printer AND I SAID NO to updating. In selected my driver, and...
My printer and I have reached a compromise!
It still says offline, however, everything is printing anyway... this I can live with.
I also found this link, which I will only try if I encounter any other disruptions
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&task Id=110&prodSeriesId=385457&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=385457&objectID=c018677 22
At some point I printed a Self Test/Configuration page which has I/O Port Status as
    USB STATUS - not ready
    and Appletalk Status - Ready
which is probably a good clue, however, I have been printing successfully for 15 hours and my hair is starting to grow back.

The HP document appears to solve your issue. When your hair starts falling out again, use it.

  • QT7 installing(what worked for me)

There have been numerous post's about having problems installing QT7. I had the same problem and got the same errors that other's are posting. There doesn't seem to be a accurate solution to this problem of wether it is the Microsoft OS or the Apple installer. So I will post what worked for me in finally getting QT7 standalone to install.
I downloaded SP2 for XP pro to get Windows Installer 3.1, I previously had version 2.0
I then removed QT from the computer using the add/remove control panel. And then went to the Folder Options control panel and selected, show hidden files and folders. Then went to Start>search all files and folders, QuickTime, and removed all that was left behind.
I then went into the registry, Start>run>type in regedit>OK
In the registry, I first went to HKEYLOCALMACHINE+SOFTWARE and deleted Apple Computer, Inc. And then hit the F3 key on the keyboard to get the next QT registry key to appear delete it and hit the F3 again for the next one to appear, and keep repeating this until they are all removed.
I then went to each registry listing-HKEYCLASSESROOT, HKEYCURRENTUSER, HKEY_USERS, HKEYCURRENTCONFIG
And would click on one to highlight and then go to the Edit menu, click find, type in QuickTime, hit the enter key on the keyboard. Delete the QT registry entry, and hit the F3 keyboard key for the next one to appear. I went thru this procedure until everything QT was removed from the computer.
Note: the registry is very risky to go into deleting keys. It would be wise to go to the microsoft website to get further info before attempting anything in it!
This worked for me. QT7 standalone then installed. I also downloaded Windows Installer Clean up Utility. Ran it and found QT 7.02 in there and removed it.
    goodluck

I don't know why this is not installing on some computers and not others. It took me 2 or 3 days to get it to.
The only things I did was update to SP2 to get Windows Installer 3.1 Remove everything QT from the computer as I previously mentioned.
In Install Shield I downloaded driver 7. I had read a article about having the same number driver in Install Shield as the first number of the version of the progarm you are trying to install. In this case it is 7.0.2, so I downloaded 7. I did not bookmark the link to this. So I don't know now where it is on the web. But after doing this it still did not install.
It didn't install to after I removed QT from the computer and ran Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. And removed QT which was in there. Here is the link to download the installer cleanup utility.

Also this link my be of interest.
    http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108393
I don't know what it was exactly that got it to install. But this is all I did. If you have any other questions or compare what I have on this computer your welcome to ask.
I realize it is fustrating and wish I could have been of more help.

  • IPhone-Outlook 2007 Calendar Sync (What worked for me)

    Hi;
Today after 3 weeks of day after day trial my iPhone-Outlook 2007 Calenar synch problems seems to be fully fixed. Once again this is what worked for me - I am sharing it and hope that can help you as well:
    Overview
    ========================
I now fully believe that the root cause of the issue starts from a corrupted appoinment entry in your local calendar file. This appointment entry in turn breaks your outlook sync file known as the .OST file. I will tell you how to fix this later. This file is what iTune uses to synch the iPHONE calendar with your Outlook 2007 (same should work for outlook 2003).
In short when the outlooksync.DLL file called by iTUNE, request to sync with outlook - it is the outlook that cannot resolve a corrupt .OST file and all goes to **** after that.
I say this as "This is up to you find this bad calendar entry, get rid of it, get rid of the .OST file, and finally tell Outlook to do a repair job on your outlook installation. I will tell you all how to do this as well.
    Steps to fix this issue:
    ===========================================
1- Go to your outlook calendar and delete any old appointment that still is in there. I got rid of anything older that 2 weeks. To do this just go to your calendar in outlook ... swith to a List view ... sort based on date and highlight anything older than that date and delete. This took me about 30-45 miutes of work... so be paitent with this step. Also, get rid of any holiday notification BS that Outlook puts in your calendar ... you can do this later.
2- Go to outlook-tools-trust center-click on Add-In and then at the bottom of the screen click on Go and validate that your two outlook sync dlls are marked and enabled.
3- Shut down outook and go to the following directory.
    C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\
    Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
and rename your .OST file ... (there should be only one out there).
3- Go to your control panel and do start/stop applications. Select Outlook and click on change ... outlook will come up with a few options. Select "Repair" this should force outlook to replace the .OST file which you just renamed.
4- Now starts your outlook and let it do its initial sync. Make sure iTune is off at this point. After the Outlooks initialization is done ... now comes the moment of truth...
5- Start iTune (I recommend that you select manual sync) and sycn with your calendar.
At this point I learned that all my calendar items have come in ....
Good luck and let me know if this works with you. Please Please remember the first step ... getting rid of your old appointments is the most important step ... don't rush it ... get rid of anything that you don't need.
    Cheers;
    Darab.

You can try resetting sync history by clicking on edit at the top of itunes and choosing preferences. Then click on the iphone icon at the right top of the window that opens. There is a button at the bottom of the window to reset sync history.
Also, you can try creating a new login on the computer.
Open outlook and put in a few trial events.
Then sync the iphone to this outlook calendar replacing all calendar data on the iphone.
This is to see if you end up with dots on every day.
If you do not end up with dots on every day, then you might want to take a look at any reoccurring events in the other outlook calendar.
    Hope this helps.

  • THIS IS WHAT WORKED FOR ME

For hours I tried clicking back and forth from something else in iTunes back to the "iPhone" hoping to reconnect; that didn't work it! After five hours of clicking back and forth (as other users suggested) I decided to browse the iTunes store and after I looked at everything "AS SOON" as I clicked "iPhone" it began to restore the back-up. So I guess Apple wants to see if you are interested in spending all your money with their enticing iPhone enhancement apps that should have came with the original iPhones in the first place before they let you finish your upgrade. Hope this works.

This is what worked for me:
    I called 1-877-419-4500. I got a guy named Don.
I asked him to make sure the 'business' thing wasn't on my account. It wasn't.
We reset the phone. (Hold home button and sleep/wake button) nothing.
He said he was going to get a hold of someone in the 'technical activation dept'. He did.
They found a 'glitch' on my account. Seems the activation was placed on hold. they took that off.
turned off my phone, plugged it into usb cable, itunes got it, viola! activated.
call that number. talk directly to a human, no wait, no menus.

I believe if you updated your Apple TV, you need iTunes 11 to make it work.

  • This is what worked for me, Read!!!! Now I am activated

So like many of you I was stuck waiting for 24 hours. To make this short, do this. If you have been emailed and Activation ID call...877-800-3701. Ask them to cancel the current attempt to activate. Once you do, then connect and iTunes will prompt you to activate as if nothing ever happened. Once I did I was done in five minutes. My hunch is that "We", that are waiting for countless hours, we are stuck in some sort of loop. Break it and good luck.

  • Express not showing up..What worked for me...

After my 1st generation Express died last week, I got the new 802.11n-enabled unit. I was able to use Airport Utility to set the device up initially, but after rebooting the unit, it disappeared from my network, a WPA protected WDS-type with one Extreme b/g unit acting as the main unit, never to reappear. Numerous resets appeared to be fruitless, even the hardware reset where you hold the reset button down as you plug in the unit did not work.
After reading a bunch of posts on here, I finally got my unit to work. Here's what I did.
First, I did a "hard"-reset on the Express by holding down the reset button till the light started to flash amber, then releasing it. After about 30 seconds of solid amber, the express showed up in Airport utility. I copied its Airport ID number shown. Next I got the same information for the Extreme base station, which by the way, always showed up in AU.
I opened up the config window for the Extreme base station, by double clicking on its icon in Airport Utility. I then verified that it was set to be part of a WDS, confirmed passwords, etc and then manually added the Express's Airport ID # in the box for remotes. Clicked the update button and let it do its thing...
Now here's the trick... Power down your airport card, and plug the Express into your computer with an ethernet cable. At this time the Express is probably blinking amber slowly. Wait a few seconds, and then look for the Express in Airport Utility, (you may have to restart Utility, or at least hit the rescan button). My Express was now available for configuration. I followed the procedure as outlined above for the Extreme base station, although this time when prompted I entered in the Airport ID# for the Extreme base station, and set the Express to act as a remote in the WDS window. Enter security options and passwords to match the network you have entered, and hit the update button.
After a seemingly long restart, the Express showed up in the Utility, with a green light no less! I disconnected the ethernet cable, turned on my wireless card, selected the network and voila! it works. Checking AU showed both units as expected, with each one now fully updatable from their respective configuration windows.
So in summary, it appears that the newer Express units that are running 7.3.1 firmware, or those that have been updated to this firmware, have a bug that doesn't allow wireless configuration from an initial state. The 1st configuration needs a direct ethernet connection to "take". In addition, it seems Apple's instructions on doing a hardware reset (the one that resets unit to factory defaults by plugging in the unit while holding the reset button) does not work with the n-enabled boxes. This method did work for the b/g units however. There is a "soft"-reset (hold the reset button in for a second or two which pretty much is the same as un-plugging and re-plugging the unit) and the "hard"-reset, which I outlined above.
I apologize if this is a long winded post, but I hope that I may have been able to help some people out who appear to have been having the same problem that I had.
    Good luck!!

Yes, the same thing has happened to me. My internet connection was working fine, but I couldn't see my Airport Express in the Admin Utility nor could I see my remote AirTunes speakers in iTunes. After a restart, everything came back to normal. So if anyone else is facing something similar, try that before panicking.

  • The fix for loading web pages-What works for me.

Ever since I went to Tiger I have had problems with Safari and any other browser while at work on my dsl connection. I knew it was not the connection because my G4 with 9.2.2 would work. At home on cable Tiger worked fine. What I found out is that the router/server combination my ip used were Sisco and for some reason Tiger does not work well with them. I asked a programmer familiar with linux to help me and he gave me some code to type into terminal and guess what it works great!... almost! Every time I start Safari I have to enter the code and all is fine. Here is the code
    sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.rfc1323=0
See if it works for you and let me know. You will find terminal in Applications/Utilities just copy the code and paste if you want. I had problems before just getting web sites like ups.com to load or even google search pages to load.

Thanks for the tip... I don't have the problem, but others must!

  • AE n - What worked for me

I am an experienced AE user and owner of four of the 1st gen "g" type which I use with an AX "n" base station to stream music wirelessly around my house. I have previously gone through the setup procedure a dozen or more times and if you want to add an AE to an existing wireless network, the easiest way is to hook it up to your LAN by ethernet and configure it that way. I decided to try a new AE "n" to see if I could improve reception distance and performance and have been suffering the same struggles that others have posted here. After hours of experimentation, everything seems to be working. I tried so many different things it's hard to tell exactly what worked, but here is what I think did the trick.
    1. Disconnect all wireless clients from the base station.
    2. Change the network security of the base station to WPA/WPA2 and restart.
    3. Configure the AE "n" first, connecting by ethernet. You may have to do a reset using a paperclip. Configure it using WPA/WPA2, making sure it is acting as a bridge and using DHCP to acquire an IP address. Restart, leaving it connected by ethernet. Check configuration and restart again, disconnecting the cable. IT WORKS !!!
    4. Reconfigure the other wireless devices the same way: connect by ethernet; plug in; reset with paperclip; configure using WPA/WPA2, bridge, DHCP; restart with ethernet; restart again unplugged.
So far all five AEs have been working fine for 24 hours.

it worked until the next time I synced the iPod, and then back to the freeze up.

  • THE ANSWER: iChat fails to start, Error -7 & -8 etc - what worked for me!

Like many of you, I have been struggling to get iChat to work reliably. I initiate a chat, my daughter responds, it tells me the iChat is connecting, but then the dreaded error message appears. I tried all the tips given here, checked that I had opened the appropriate ports in my Router's firewall, set the QT streaming speed, ploughed through Ralph's website, all to little avail, except for the really useful find of the test "buddies" appleu3test01/02/03 (AIM). What was frustrating was that it would sometimes work, but when it wasn't working, it wouldn't work at all (ie multiple tries all failed). I eventually found a post by an unsung hero (for me!) called Steven C Ross, posted 11th Nov, suggesting I turn off Internet Sharing. Bingo! iChat works again!! I usually have sharing on to allow my Powerbook to connect wirelessly; but not always, hence the frustration that iChat sometimes worked ok for an unknown reason!!
I think this tip of Steven's deserves a lot more publicity, hence this post.
    Thanks, Steven.
NB I am using Leopard on a new Intel iMac; don't know whether it applies to 10.4 but worth a try!

This process worked for me on a new Mac Pro (early 2014) to get Windows 8.1 (not 8.0) installed, although I did make one slight change to the process: instead of following your advice at the point: "Restart and follow instructions as before", I instead restarted and used the windows partitioner dialog to 1) delete the bootcamp partition, and 2) create a new partition that was slightly smaller than the remaining available space (by about 1GB). The installer said it might need to create an additional small partition (which it did). I continued with the rest of the install process as you describe above. (Yes, it did take a long time to get past the "almost ready" part.)
Thank you very much for your post!

  • This is what worked for me to install 8.1 Pro on brand new rmbp late 2013 NO WORKAROUND

15 in rmbp, late 2013. Extrernal apple USB drive. USB key for bootcamp drivers. Brand new windows 8.1 pro full version from store. No Upgrade.
Used Bootcamp assistant to 1) save drivers to usb key 2) partition drive to two. Left usb key and drive connected.
Bootcamp assistant reboots mac, windows splash screen. Follow instructions including having to reformat the newly created partition which is usual. No bootcamp parttionn name is present but it should be obvious which is the OSX and Windows partition. Windows begins installing then fails. rmbP is stuck.
Restart nothing, just grey screen. Call apple care. Have to PRM, press on, hold command option P and R keys.Release when apple beep starts. Then it will boot back into OS-X
Boots into osx. Go to bootcamp assistant. Follow instructions and windows partition is removed to give a single OSX parttion. Reopen bootcamp assistant. Repartition. leave USB key and external drive attached. Restart and follow instructions as before. NO issues.
Note, the "almost ready" splash screen hangs for a long time.
Then bootcamp installer comes up. Build 5411.NVIDA driver installed etc. Auto resart after drivers installed. USB drive and key attached. WIndows splash screen. SUCCESSFULLY installed.
OI can also hold down option now on restart to sleect which OS to boot into . WORKS GREAT.
I suspect you have to do a PRM reset after first failure using bootcamp assistant to get it to install properly thereafter.
After I did this I was able to install fine using bootcamp installer in OS-X. No need for ANY work arounds.

  • Possible solution to activation: what worked for me after 24 hrs of waiting

So I was in the same boat as everyone else thats waiting.
Let me describe my account and if it sounds like you, this will probably work for you as well.
I am an existing Cingular customer with an old Cingular plan. I also had a corporate discount which made my account a "business" account.
I went thru the activation and got the "more time is needed" screen everyone is staring at.
I then called the phone # thats listed in the big thread (the iphone activation #) and got them to cancel my activation. I went to the AT&T store and picked up a new sim card. I also called AT&T and switched my plan to a normal AT&T plan and had them remove the corporate discount (since it doesn't work on iPhones anyway) and also made them change the account into an individual account and completely remove all association with a business account.
After all this was finished, I tried to activate again and got an error saying my new plan isn't valid for an iPhone (not verbatim) it listed two #s to calls, 1 is for business customers and 1 is for regular iPhone activation. If you get this message, it means your previous rep that you told to remove the business account failed to do his job. Call the business line(866-907-3484), explain your situation and that you want the "BMG" association removed and you're stuck on it saying you don't have a valid plan for an iPhone. They know the issue, there is no run around with them. They will fix your account and stay on the phone with you as you go past that step, get to the end of your activation and your phone WILL be activated within that 3 minutes.
Getting a new SIM card isn't necessary as long as you cancel the current activation. That is a MUST! You will get an e-mail letting you know your activation is canceled.
Good luck! Wish I wouldve known this information from the beginning it would've saved me a day!

Thank you so much for sharing this. I have tried for 24 hours to get my iPand was told by ATT that there was just no way that my business account could be changed until Monday. I followed your instructions, called the business line(866-907-3484) and got it to work last night.
    Thank you again!

  • Wake from sleep problem: what worked for me

My 15" 2.2G late 2007 MBP (OS 10.5.5) started doing the "black screen when you open the lid from sleep" thing last week. Before that, it had always "gotten out of bed" in a good mood.
I checked the system log and saw the "AppleYukon2" Error but later found it does that every time anyway, even with normal wake-up behavior. That may be a red herring in the troubleshooting path.
Then I saw something else. We had travelled the weekend prior to the problem showing up and used the computer on the hotel's wireless network. The log showed the MBP was stalling trying to find that now-distant network. I went to System Preferences and deleted that network, and unchecked "Remember Networks."
That was about noon yesterday. I've put the computer to sleep and closed the lid about a dozen times since then and it's awakened properly every time.
Offered for you consideration. Your mileage may vary, but it fixed my problem.
    Allan

    Hi fa1con,
It worked for a while but has slipped back in although the MBP has not been out of the house. However, I've encountered some minor power issues during the last week that might be at play. I plan to have an AASP look at it before the warranty runs out next month.
The syslogd process started working overtime writing very large logs so it's harder than it was to scour for hints. However, I thinlk I've figured out the root of the log problem so I'll do some more log diving.
I'm currently back to the old place: sleep the computer and then close the lid and it wakes up fine; close the lid to sleep and it hangs.
