Compressor 3.5 - Burn DVD Preset - Doesn't Burn DVD

Hello,
Loving the Compressor 3.5 Burn DVD preset, but lately, it's not loving me back.
I send a movie to Compressor, select the "Burn DVD" preset, let the project encode, wait for the burn process to begin, get to "1 minute remaining" on the screen, then BAM!
Compressor goes from "1 minute remaining" to 2, 3, 4+ minutes remaining. And the DVD I've been waiting for isn't burned. I look at the unrecorded part of the DVD and only see my reflection (I take this as the unburned DVD mocking me, as I sit/stare at it, as if I were in some sort of "stupid" contest with the thing).
I let the machine sit for several minutes to an hour. Nothing.
I've changed DVD brands. Nothing.
I tell the machine that everything is going to be alright. Nothing.
My FCP system was acting very buggy lately (relating to fonts). I created a new user account and it solved all my issues FCP/Motion font issues. But this Compressor issue is something new.
Now, if I go back to my old account, I get the same hang up with Compressor. The Create DVD Preset is encoding my stuff, but not burning my stuff.
In the interim, I'm taking the encoded assets into DVDSP, and creating a menu-less Video DVD.
Taking comments, questions and suggestions about how to solve this issue.
Compressor, where is the love?

Can Compressor output a disc image properly? That could be burned with Disc Utility.
Does the Create Disc app ever launch? There is no progress window, but you can see a new app and menu bar appear. Also, try doing this with Activity Monitor open. It would be good to know if the fault is Create Disc, or something else.

  • BEST HD QUALITY SETTINGS IN COMPRESSOR TO EXPORT TO DVD STUDIO PRO

I shot in HD, and edited with FCP. I am now trying to use compressor to make a DVD, but first I am trying to figure out what settings I should use in compressor to get the best quality for my DVD?? I wil be completing the DVD process in DVD studio pro.... Thank you!

Unless you have HD-DVD media and an HD-DVD burner, you are doing an SD DVD. As in, what most DVDs are these days (Blu-Ray and HD-DVD still being quite cost prohibitive on the user end). If you have standard 4.7GB DVD-R or DVD+R this is SD DVD.
As far as settings, depending on how many audio tracks you have and what format they are, I would take one of the two-pass MPEG-2 settings (e.g. MPEG-2 Best Quality 90 Minutes) in compressor, go to the Encoder pane -> Quality tab and raise the Average/Max bitrates. Set Motion Estimation to Best.
Keep in mind you want all your bandwidth usage (audio, video, subtitles, etc) to go no higher than ~9.5Mbps lest you run the risk of players choking.
If your HD source is real clean, even at the default 6.2 Mbps you should get great quality, but some extra bits in there will give more room to avoid artifacts...
    Hope that helps.

  • QuickTime 7 iPhone preset doesn't work with iOS 7

Using the QuickTime Pro iPhone export preset doesn't seem to create movies that can be played in iOS 7.  When clicked on, you get the "no" play symbol.  The same movies can be played on an iPhone with iOS 6.
    Any workarounds out there?

  • What is the best Compressor settings for burning a 2 hour DVD on single layer disc?

I have a 2 hour (120 minutes) project timeline which I want to encode in compressor to fit on a single layer DVD.
Do I need to change the Bit Rate to make it fit on a single layer?
Or can someone post the settings or link to where I can find the best settings?
    Thanks in advance,
    z

Select "Best 120 minutes" and you should be good to go.

  • I have a project in FCP that is a 2:1 aspect ratio. When I send to compressor to author a DVD I lose the aspect ratio and the image fills the 16x9 frame. How do I preserve the original ratio thru compressor?

    Aspect ratio lost in compressor

Hi Tom, thanks so much for answering. I totally get the need to letterbox but my issue is, how do I get the best quality in letterbox format?
Should I export it thru QT Conversion or just Export to Quicktime Movie? I exported as a self contained movie to keep the quality but when I send it thru the MPEG-2 compressor for DVD it fills the 16x9 frame without letterbox.
How would I modify the MPEG-2 preset to give me the letterbox in the MPEG-2?
I've been playing around but haven't hit the jackpot yet.
If there's any info you have, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much

  • Downgrade Compressor Settings for longer DVD

I work with very simple standard definition 4 x 3 aspect video and sometimes make DVD's Compressing with the various Stock DVD Compressor settings.  I have never made a custom setting with Compressor.  Now I would like to put a 200 minute video on a standard DVD (not dual density).
Can I modify a default setting like the 150 minute, and downgrade the quality enough so that the 200 min results would fit on a 4.6 gig DVD?  (maybe room for a very simple menu.)  Do I have to make a new setting from scratch, or could I modify and save, working from a default?  Like I say, I have never made a compressor setting, so I could appreciate a sort of step-by-step.
    Thank You
    Richard Miller

Duplicate the DVD preset you want to use; it will show up in the custom presets in Compressor.  Clcik on the new custom preset so it will show in the Inspector window and make any needed adjustments.  Give it a name you'll remember then save it and apply it to the file you want to encode.
You can use one of the available online bit rate calculators to determine the best bit rate based on your program's duration: http://www.google.com/search?client=opera&rls=en&q=dvd+bit+rate+calculator&sourc eid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

  • Compressor Incompatible Formats for DVD Studio Pro???

I'm at my wits end...I have exported DV/NTSC QuickTime movies from Final Cut Pro and then drug them into Compressor, where I have applied the "fastet" DVD encodes for SD video of 90, 120, & 150 minutes in Compressor (all Apple presets that I have not modified). The files come out, but when I try to drag them into DVD Studio Pro, it tells me that the video files are of an incompatible format. What am I doing wrong here? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

If you did not touch the presets, the first thing I would look for is whether you set the project to PAL and were trying to bring NTSC streams in or vice versa. ( If you had changed anything, such as the Codecs or typew of MPEG-2, then it could be something else.) Any details on the computer or veersion of Compressor and DVD SP?
Is this an upgrade over a prior install?

  • Using Compressor to Export for DVD Duel Layer

I want to Compress for a DVD DL, but all the setting i see in compressor are set for a DVD-5 (4.7 G). How do i get it to be set of a DVD DL (8.5 G)? Please Help

    Jared,
There are several things to consider when creating a dual-layer disc. First, the first-layer needs to be larger than the second, even if by only one bit. DVDSP4 has the ability to automatically place the layer break in the appropriate place however, it's best to help the process by placing "cell" markers in the timeline at about the halfway mark of the data on your encode. This will help DVDSP find an appropriate place to create the layer-break.
Also, you can't use the entire 8.5GB on the disk; just like HDD's a portion of the actual data-space on the disk is taken up by metadata and MPEG-2 core files during the encode.
To really get a handle on how this all works - and to help with any troubleshooting I'd highly suggest these two books:
DVD Studio Pro 4; Martin Sitter and Adrian Ramseier and; Compressor 3 Quick Reference Guide, Brian Gary (who is a regular poster on these forums).
    Best wishes.

  • Are Compressor files compatible with DVD Studio Pro?

I am buying Final Cut Pro X and Compressor, but I am working on a school project that needs to be finished in DVD Studio Pro. Would the compressed files be compatible with DVD Studio Pro even though FCP7 and FCPX are not compatible?

Yes.  Compressor 4 (or any version) will create the DVD-compliant files that are used in DVDSP.

  • COMPRESSOR will not compress DVD files adequately

This is a weird one.   I'm using compressor to encode files for DVD studio pro.  However, no matter what file I plug into compressor and no matter what DVD compression settings/data rates I choose, compressor will not compress the files small enough to fit on the DVD.
    Any ideas?

Yeah, it should fit no problem.
Try a CBR setting at around 7mbps... it will compress much faster and it will be of higher quality than a VBR setting.

  • Best Compressor encoding setting for DVD

I have an 80 min FCP project. It is a stage show where part of the frame is dark and the stage is light with gels and the Dancers. What is the Best encoding setting for a standard size DVD
I tried 90 minute 2-past best DVD but there was severe blocking/chopping.
    Any tricks & tips?
    Thanks

I don’t understand that. (Me not so smart.) If there is a standardized Unicode value associated with glyph X, then how is it that none of the Unicode character sets in Firefox abide? Add a font? As I understand it, a font is just a re-representation of known characters. It seems like I’m hearing that not only does there have to be a character set decode of the data I’m viewing, but also a font that takes that Unicode value and translates it to something visual. That doesn’t wash. Between databases data is converted to and fro, irrespective of OS/App fonts installed. Sybase <-> Oracle doesn’t need a font installed. Viewing from SQL I don’t need a font installed.
But – thank you cor-el for effectively resolving my problem – even if I don’t understand the logic. Thank you for taking the time to reply!

  • Compressor gets stuck and task bar doesn't progress at all

I have set the settings I want compressor to do but, it gets stuck from after I press submit. Task bar doesn't "progress" and, all the jobs are in "waiting"
    Any ideas Anyone ?

I had a similar problem and Digital Rebellion's Compressor repair did not help but their FCS uninstaller did.
You will need all of your FCS discs because there are many shared elements related to Compressor and Q Master. It took a few hours but after I did this Compressor was back to normal.

  • Issues with Motion in Using Compressor for a PAL DVD

I am new to DVD Studio Pro and Compressor and am trying to create a DVD of a 50 minute PAL project that I made using FCP. I have found a couple tutorials on how to export my project using compressor to be compatible with DSP via pre sets (DVD: Best Quality 4:3) and actually manipulating the controls myself. I have found in using both techniques that during any scene with motion, the edges of the moving actor become blurred and grainy. The tutorials that I checked out I assume (since they were from the US) were for NTSC projects, is there any other considerations that I should make in compressing a PAL project, which might contribute to this graininess? Any ideas?
Any help would be much appreciated. I have included my settings from Compressor below.
    Thanks.
    Name: MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass 4:3
Description: Fits up to 90 minutes of video with Dolby Digital audio at 192 Kbps or 60 minutes with AIFF audio on a DVD-5
    File Extension: m2v
    Estimated file size: 273.48 MB
    Type: MPEG-2 video elementary stream
    Video Encoder
    Format: M2V
    Width: 720
    Height: 576
Pixel aspect ratio: PAL CCIR 601
    Crop: None
    Frame rate: 25
    Frame Controls: Off
    Aspect ratio: 4:3
    Field dominance: Bottom first
    Average data rate: 6.2 (Mbps)
    2 Pass VBR enabled
    Maximum data rate: 7.7 (Mbps)
    High quality
    Best motion estimation
Closed GOP Size: 12, Structure: IBBP
    DVD Studio Pro meta-data enabled

The general concepts are the same in terms of maintaining quality throughout the work process in terms of Codecs, exports etc.
As to the motion areas, compression markers in FCP can help in problem areas. What you should do is grab some of the problems sections and drop markers in there and encode them. Some of the frame controls can help, depending on source footage. What was the original material and cpautred/edited? Sometimes things in there can also give quality hits.
Lastly some things (like real black outfits on light backgrounds) can cause some edging issues which can take some work to clean up as much as possible...

  • What to use if not compressor to export to DVD?

I have problems with digital flickering when using compressor to export files, what are my options? I have a project that was due yeasterday so Im getting kinda desperate, I have about 120 minutes that I need to get into DVD SP bud all my compressor files are getting screwed up. I want as high quality as possible.

I have problems with digital flickering when using compressor to export files, what are my options? ..... I want as high quality as possible.
Then you need a hardware encoder.
Post more information about your project and probably you'll get help to get the best quality possible using the tools you currently have.
Please, when posting same problem in different forums (what is absolutly allowed), just link them to let people work in group and track all answers.
