Compressor 3 sometime creates corrupt m2v files

I have FCS 2 installed. Usually i export my project from FC to Compressor, i use standard 90 min dvd template (everything in PAL cos i live in PAL zone). Import generated m2v and ac3 files in DVD SP and so on.
My big problem is that sometimes Compressor will generate a corrupt m2v that when i try to import in DVDSP will cause the program to quit immediately. When this happens, i try a different compression setting and it works, but on the last occasion I had a very tight deadline and had a 40 min project to export.... There was no way i could manage to get DVD SP to import that m2v file... So i exported the project in 2 separate files ( Day 1 of the event and Day 2 ... initially i had put a chapter marker).
Now Day1.m2v was ok, but Day2.m2v kept crashing SP while importing the asset.
At the end i had to export a mov file from FCP and let DVDSP do the encoding.
At first I thought it was a problem with DVDSP , but then i noticed i can't open the Day2.m2v file with Quicktime player because it will hang the program... so i guess the problem lies within Compressor.
This is a completely random thing... On another project where i had the same problem, i removed a 10 sec clip from FC timeline, exported with compressor and had no problem at all......
And this is happening on 2 separate identical machines (one at home and one at the office).
Any ideas ?

Sorry for the 'me too' post but....
I am experiencing the exact same thing.
I have a 2 hour Full HD project which I export from FCP via Compressor using the 120Min DVD preset.
Sometimes the file it creates works perfectly in DVDSP, sometimes it just causes DVDSP to hang and/or crash.
If I then export the file again, sometimes it'll work and sometimes it wont.
This is all on a 24" iMac with Leopard and all the latest updates.
Whether the file works or doesn't work, there is no indication from Compressor that it has not processed the file correctly, and the ones that don't work are the same size as the ones that do!

  • Compressor now creating unusable .m2v files - on two different systems

    Hi all,
This week I was in Sydney attempting to show a friend how to use compressor.
I showed him the way I use it and all was fine until the file was encoded. The resulting audio file was fine, but the video file with a m2v extension ended up with an icon that looked more like a document that a video-related one that compressor normally makes.
DVD Studio would crash when I attempted to import it.
I thought there was a problem with his system and recommended he reinstall compressor, amongst other things.
Now today I am at home and attempting to encode and guess what? My computer is now doing EXACTLY the same thing. Creating unusable .m2v video component files with a document-looking icon.
Am I doing something wrong here and missing it?
    Thanks in advance.

This may be an old problem (.m2v file kind) for which I've posted the fix several times (seems like nearly ever week someone posts a report like yours).
The following procedure may solve your problem (however, you may have to change your Finder view to Icons or Lists in order to access the problematic .m2v files):
Select one of the .m2v files that is giving you a problem and then do a control-click (or right click) to show the Finder's contextual menu, then go to the Open With item and select Other... and click the Always Open With checkbox and then navigate to your QuickTime Player and select it as the application to open. This will change the file association for the .m2v file kind and it should fix the problem. You may want to do a system reboot after you do the above fix.
Summary: control-click or right click on the problem .m2v file then:
Open With -> Other... -> (select "Always Open With" checkbox) -> Open (choose) QuickTime Player.

  • Final Cut sometimes creates a 2nd file with a "-v" suffix when capturing

    Hi
When I capture from dvcam tapes in Final Cut Pro 5, the capture file is sometimes splitted into two files, the first one with the specified name and the second one, much smaller, with the specified name plus "-v" appended as a suffix. If I delete the second file, the first file may or may not be still readable. I don't know why it appends: I've searched in the FC manual and in several forums, but haven't found anything...
My questions are: What is the purpose of this second file? Under which circumstances is it created?
    Thanks

Maybe I'll have to be more precise... This is not an issue for me, I can deal with those files: I don't even have to include the second file in my project in order to make it work without complaints, but I have to consider referencing this file in a CMS, so assumptions about what the file is for are not enough. I need to have a clear definition for this file. If someone could tell me whether this situation is avoidable wouldn't hurt (and would be appreciated), but I already have to deal with thousands of video files, ~1% of them splitted as I explained above.

  • Corrupt .m2v files

I am working on a project that was previously worked on by a different company. I have received all the files and assets used in the DVD and everything has relinked fine. However, when I open the original project which is 256MB and then resave as a copy it after I make my changes, the file size shrinks down to 2.8MB. I found this unusal. Does this make sense?
The other problem I'm having is that some of the .m2v files become corrupted when relinked in the project. I can preview them fine in QT, but as soon as they are relinked within DVDSP they don't work. If I double click on them the viewer window just turns green....no video file. It isn't all the files...just a few of them.
I'm having new copies of the files sent over to me incase they are corrupt. However, I'm hoping that someone can help me out and give me some advice as to what is happening.
    Thanks,

Is it Megs or Gigs? (Not that it will affect the answer, but Megs is REAL small for a project unless you have only a couple of minutes of video). Anyway when you open a project and close it and reopen it the size will change after DVD SP initially reads a project or assets have changed. Often You will see an outrageously large number that puts you over the disc limit, closing and reopening takes care of the issue.
The other problem I'm having is that some of the .m2v files become corrupted when relinked in the project. I can preview them fine in QT, but as soon as they are relinked within DVDSP they don't work. If I double click on them the viewer window just turns green....no video file. You can delete the MPEG and PAR files then reopen them. Or you can try and save them under a new name. If the m2v plays okay in QT, it is probably okay. Are you able to see them properly whhen you simulate the disc?

  • Can't create the m2v file

I have a problems sometimes with QuickTime file conversion for DVD author.
I have render my sequence in FCP (v5) than File -Export -Using Quick Time Conversion.
I have right MPG2 Quick Time settings and get message about not rendered sequence files...(I did rendered them)
I think this has to do something with files management, right drives or folders.
    Help.
G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   What I am missing here...?

    Hi:
Use Compressor to get MPEG-2 encoding. You can go to Export Using Compressor opyion from inside FCP or go to Export Quicktime Movie (no QT Conversion) > Same settings > Self Contained (my flavour).
    Read this info:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301871
In Compressor use any of the standard DVD preset that match your project lenght and encode your audio to Dolby 2 (AC3) to save space and bandwidth in your DVD.
    Hope that helps !

  • GB Creating Corrupt Project Files

Hi. I've been working with GB and GPO (Garritan Personal Orchestra) for a video project. A had a Project open (a fairly large one) and was frequently "saving" to the project on the Mac HD. I have encountered problems with GB crashing and the project files being used becoming corrupted in the past week. But I can't figure out what's causing the problem. This time I saved the project, opened up a track volume control for one track (Out of the 20 or so tracks) and clicked on one point and the big picture in the Software Instrument went black and GB crashed. The Relaunch dialog window came up. At that point, the project was corrupted. I now have two .band files that don't have a thumbnail preview when looking at them in the finder. GB says "Read Error: Illegal format of file. Abort" when I try to open them. Any help on more of what's causing this problem rather than how to fix the corrupted files (Even though that would be fantastic) would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Lojimek

Sorry I don't have any insight as to possible causes (do you Lock as many tracks as possible)? but here's HangTime's tutorial on rescuing corrupted files:

  • InstallShield Tuner 6.0.1 creates corrupt MST files

MST files for Acrobat 6.0 Professional, which are created with InstallShield Tuner 6.0.1, neither do work, nor can be loaded into Orca.
I remarked, that the file AcroPro.mst is destroyed when loading AcroPro.itw. If I fix it before creating a new project, it seems to work.
Has anybody found a better workaround, than to fix AcroPro.mst, every time after starting InstallShield Tuner 6.0.1?
Has anybody a copy of InstallShield Tuner 6.0. May be it works with InstallShield Tuner 6.0.

The MST file that comes with Reader, Pro, Stnd, Elements is not meant to be opened in InstallShield Tuner for Acrobat. According to the documentation linked from the download page, you open the ITW file when you first open Tuner, then select the MSI file, then select Create Transform, and Tuner creates the MST for you.
You'll need both the MST that Tuner creates AND the original MST that comes with the product... You can see this if you select the 'create a setup.exe' option (I can't remember exactly what it's called) in the Package section of Tuner, then do the Packaging, and then look at the setup.ini in the resulting package...the CmdLine= section of setup.ini will have both MSTs listed with a semicolon between them.

  • Finder restarts if a .m2v file is in the window

I'm going to post this question in several forums because I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software problem/glitch.
I am using Final Cut Pro 4.5HD. After I complete a poject, I export the file out of Compressor to create a .m2v file (mpeg-2). When I try to open the window/folder in which the .m2v file resides (I usually export it to an external hard drive's main window), the window opens with no file names showing and stays open for about a second, then the Finder restarts without that window being open. The same thing happens no matter where I export the .m2v file, meaning that the same thing happens with that window.
I have Quicktime Pro 7.1.6 and the MPEG-2 plug-in, but I'm not sure if the plug-in is working or not. I purchased the plug-in in June 2005 and have since upgraded Quicktime and the OS several times.
I'm assuming that because I can export .m2v files that the MPEG-2 plug-in is working, but I've read that it's used for playback only.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?
I also need to save an AIFF file as an mpg1...any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,

Try this, as it's possible your system just doesn't know what program to associate with .m2v files.
Get info (apple+I) on one of your .m2v files
In the "Open with" dropdown find QuickTime Player.
If it isn't in the list choose "other" and navigate to QuickTime Player in your Applications folder.
Then click on the "Change all" button.

  • Importing m2v files into 09

I created a movie in FCP7---I exported it to compressor. It then created an m2v file.
I now want to import that m2v into iMovie09 but it will not appear.
When I click on the folder iMovie hangs up and crashes. Nothing appears in the folder and i know it is there.
    Any ideas?

  • Audio on a m2v file

I'm exporting a video from FCP HD through Compressor and outputing a m2v file and aiff.
Once the file is finished if I open the m2v file I'm getting audio playing as well. I didn't think m2v included audio.
When I look at the movie properties it says that the audio is Integer (Little Endian).
Anyone know why I'm getting audio?
The same file outputed on a different mac (with the same settings) doesn't output audio within the m2v file.

What happens if you change the name of your .aiff file? I remember this being a feature, of some sort, of Quicktime.

  • Urgent!!  Problems muxing .m2v files and audio!! MPEG Streamclip/Compressor

    Hello!
I am under an urgent deadline to upload a short 6 min documentary clip for a client to review for screening this week. The footage was shot in 1080/60i HDV.
Usually, I find the best quality and fastest way to do this is to export directly from my FCP sequence using the '150 min Best Quality' DVD settings in compressor to get an .m2v video file and .ac3 audio file. Then I open the .m2v files in MPEG Streamclip which links it with my .ac3 file, then do 'Export MPEG with MP-2 audio". This gives me a single, muxed file that I can then upload to YouTube or Vimeo.
However, with this project, when I open up my .m2v file in MPEG Streamclip, it's recognizing the .ac3 file and I can see the info for it in the MPEG Streamclip window, but when I play the file in MPEG Streamclip or mux it, I don't hear any audio. Furthermore, after about 5 seconds into the clip, the playhead will continue moving, but the video will freeze, then maybe pick up again later. The .m2v video will play back smoothly in VLC player or Quicktime player, but not in MPEG Streamclip.
I've tried exporting different little sections of the timeline to see if maybe I had some corrupted footage or whatnot. I even exported a small clip from an older HDV project to test. But no matter where I export from, I am running into the same problem. I can bring the .m2v file and .ac3 file into DVD Studio Pro and burn a DVD with no problem, but I can't mux them. If I build the DVD file in DVD SP and try to open the .VOB file with MPEG Streamclip, I get the same problem. I even tried using a different software to mux (ffmpegX) but to no avail. When I try with ffmpegX, it either tells me I'm dropping frames, or if it works and it muxes it, when I open the MPEG file, it'll stutter at about 5 seconds in as well and I can't hear any audio, even though there is supposed to be audio in the muxed file.
I think I might have updated my Quicktime a few days ago with the system update, and maybe updated a few other things, so I don't know if this has any bearing on the problems I'm running into. But I was able just a few days ago to export HDV 1080/60i using this workflow without any problems.
I realize I have other export options, but this always seems to me to be the best quality and fastest way of doing it vs. encoding an H.264 which, on my machine is RIDICULOUSLY slow...I need to be uploading multiple versions of the cut to the client, and really need help! Thanks so much in advance!

what you want is an m2v program file. Export a reference copy from FCP (uncheck Make Movie Self Contained") That's very fast. Bring it into Compressor. In the settings panel find the MPEG-2 settings folder. Select Program Stream. Adjust to your liking and run. The audio and video will already be "muxed" when it's done and using compressor 3 you can set it to upload to YouTube, Mobile or similar sites.

  • Compressor presets making m2v file too big

I am on fresh install of tiger fcp suite, all up to date. I use DVD best quality 120 min preset and it spits out a 5 gig m2v. I try to set my own custom setting with exact bitrate to maximize quality and use up disc space, never exceeding safe levels. and it creates file smuch bigger than compressor 1.2.1 did with same settings.

I've just completed my third attempt to encode a 1h57min video using the following settings, based on the DVD Best Quality 4:3 factory presets.
    - Avg Bit Rate: 4.6 | Max Bitrate 7.5
    Result: M2V file too large (> 5gb!)
    - Avg Bit Rate 4.6 | Max Bitrate 7.0
Result: M2V slightly smaller, but still too large (> 4.8gb!)
    - Avg Bit Rate 4.0 | Max Bitrate 7.0
Result: M2V file still too large, at 4.72gb!
*Again, these file sizes are the M2V files BY THEMSELVES!*
BTW, I used a trusted bitrate calculator to get the 4.6 avg bitrate reading for a 120min video. I've also used that bitrate without issue in Compressor 1.
The source is an 8-bit Uncompressed video timeline from FCP 5.0.2. There are no cuts in the timeline, as it was digitized directly from the source and placed on the timeline to be encoded with chapter markers in place. The only image transformation within Compressor set to occur is the cropping of the bottom 2 video fields to comform the 486 lines to 480.
This has wasted THREE days of my time. And in all cases, the estimated file sizes reported by Compressor 2 has been grossly inaccurate.
How am I supposed to work around this without churning out video that looks like utter crud???
I've already had to drop my Avg and Max Bitrates from 5.0mbps to 4.0mpbs, even though Apple's preset for 120 minutes Best Quality lists 5.0mpbs with a max bitrate 7.5mbps. If the Apple presets aren't even working at this, clearly there is something wrong here.

I wonder by what it is caused?
    Thanks

    Hi Matthew,
As mentioned previously, this KnowledgeBase article may be of some help. Also, if your code is being run on an embedded controller and then a network controller (not embedded), you will need to run the program differently. On the embedded controller, you should deploy your VI in a Project Explorer or programmatically (as described here.) However, you do not need to deploy the program to a network controller, but simply run the VI.
I would also suggest creating a new .IAK file. Do you still see the same error? Also, double-check that the software installed on the controller matches the software installed on the host PC. If you have any file paths associated with one FieldPoint controller, ensure that you are changing them to match the second controller.
Please keep us posted on your troubleshooting steps. Have a great day!
