Compressor 4.0.3, Dark Video

Compressor 4.0.3, Dark Video; now any video I load into Compressor appears too dark in the Preview window and compresses too dark. QuickTime, FCPX, Motion, (and Avid) all play these files fine, but in Compressor, too dark.
Not a simple 1.8 vs 2.2 Gamma issue. All codecs and color profiles are dark, tested on 2 MacPros w/different monitors.  Videos that I compressed a week and a half ago (PR422 files to h264) were fine, but now those same source videos (PR422) are dark in Compressor (only). Again, ANY video that I load into Compressor is extremely dark. I've tested this on two different Macs. I can't be the only one experiencing this...  Help?

Using Compressor 4.0.3, I submitteda job from a ProRes Quicktime file. I have added a Timecode filter and Text Overlay filter (which you can see) and this is a screenshot of the Preview window.
After the h.264 compression, I get this result in Quicktime:
This shot is a little underexposed anyway, but you can see that the Preview image is noticeably darker than the resulting Quicktime image.
BTW, in Quicktime 7 I have the Preference "Enable Final Cut Studio Compatibilty" checked. If I uncheck it, the resulting image becomes even lighter - as seen here:
Finally, when viewing in Quicktime Player, it appears similar to the non-FCP-Compatibility enabled version of QT7 - seen here:

Premiere Elements 7, on what computer operating system?
In Premiere Elements 7, there are various effects for lightening a dark video. After applying one of these lighting effects, have you been editing these applied effects in Edit Effects/Properties Palette after you apply them?
    Video Effects
Adjust - Brightness and Contrast, Auto Levels....
Image Control  Panel that is a default Properties Palette panel along with Motion and Opacity....for Brightness, Contrast, Hue, and Saturation.

  • Importing from Sony DV into iMovie & getting Darker video image

Importing from Sony DV (Video quality looks great on video LCD screen) into iMovie & getting Darker video image. After I import into iMovie the video image is darker, making in harder to edit. I appreciate any help with understanding how I can improve the video quality when importing.
    Thank you

    Welcome to discussions!
You may just need to adjust your monitor.

Plus, it will look better on a TV than your monitor.

Hi can anyone suggest an app to use to enable me to lighten up dark video footage taken on my iPhone.

  • Compressor outputs white screen for video?

    Hi Folks,
Just bought FCP Studio 3 a few days ago.
I'm on a new mac pro quad 2.66 running latest rev of SL.
    Here's the deal:
I took a 1 hour 33 minute edited DV movie from within FCP 7.
    output a reference QT file.
went into QT and saved the text files (if i don't, i won't save the chapters).
following this great video for setting up a cluster between my 2 mac pros
    http://vimeo.com/1799266
chose the Best 90 minute DVD setting for ac3 and mpeg2 at 6.2
    ran it.
video is completely white. sound is there, but i don't get it?
when I go into compressor and click on my video file, I can see the footage in the screen on the right hand side. I thought maybe the reference file didn't include the video (ie. maybe I selected it wrong), but it's there.
    Any ideas?
I ran a search on 'white screen' and 'white video', but nothing came up?
    Cheers,

    Hi folks,
just wanted to let you know that I believe the problem stemmed from me not choosing the DV NTSC 48 khz setting instead of 'current settings'. Once I chose DV etc... it was good to go.

  • Dark video in FCP but ok in iMovie

Bit of a newcomer to this but as I have Final Cut Pro 7 thought I'd use it rather than iMovie which seems a bit primitive.
Shot a video of someone in the studio yesterday on a Nikon DSLR at 1280x720 25fps
Then ran it through Compressor to transcode it to Apple Pro Res for editing.
    All ok so far
Viewed the footage in iMovie and it looks fine but what a horror in FCP7 !!!
    It is so dark
    So what's wrong ?
Have seen an earlier discussion which seemed to think the monitor calibration is off but how can that be ?
iMovie displays the footage fine but FCP doesn't.
    Any thoughts guys ?
    See the attached screen grab
As you can see: FCP Viewer on top and iMovie below

This is the forum for FCP-X, but  . . .
In FCP-7 go to the menu Final Cut Pro > System Settings.
When the System Settings Pane opens, click on the Playback Tab.

  • What is the best Compressor setting for best quality video playback on an iBook g4?

I know the iBook and G4's in general are very outdated today, but I need to ask anyways. I have some video projects in 720p and 1080p in which I have down converted to 480p and also exported to MPEG-2 for DVD (personal wedding videos and videos made for my clients using Final Cut Studio). Anything encoded at most resolutions using h264 won't play on my iBook. Even 480p.
I have about 20 hours of mixed video content that I need it in a format that is suitable for an iPhone 4 and an iBook 12" with a 1.2GHz G4, 1.25GB RAM and I added a 250 WD 5400 IDE hard disk (running 10.5.8 and 10.4.11 for Classic Mode). I know the iBook doesn't seem like the best tool for modern video playback, but I need to figure out which setting will play best with iPhone 4 and iBook so I don't need to make 2 local copies of each video for each device.
The iBook plays best with the original DVD output MPEG-2 file and playing back in QT Pro or VLC... but I already have 180 GB's of MPEG-2 files now and my little HD is almost full. I don't have enough room to convert all the iPhone 4 counterparts. If I use Compressor 3.5.3, what is the optimal setting for iBook and iPhone .m4v or .mp4 files that can play on both devices? So far 720x400-480 widescreen videos @ 29fps works great on my iPhone, Apple TV 2, and other computers but seems to murder my poor iBook if encoded with high profile (and still choppy on simple profiles). 640x480 (adding black matte bars to my videos) plays fine in MPEG-2 but drops frames or goes to black screen if I convert it to mp4 (and looks bad on the iPhone 4 because of the matte). But if I convert on any of the simple profiles, it looks terrible on my iPhone 4 and a blocky on the iBook.
This is the problem leading me to having 2 copies of each video and eating my hard disk space. What is the best video setting for both playback on the iBook and iPhone 4? Can the iBook playback H264 at all in decent resolutionsat all? I don't really want to have a 480p .m4v collection for the iPhone 4 and a MPEG-2 RAW collection just to play the same videos on the iBook.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Update: The iBook can play any 480p video and higher if I encode them with DivX and in AVI format. But of course this is not compatible with my iPhone 4. At least I can shrink my library now and get away from the full MPEG-2s. I don't get why I can't use Apple's h264 though. There has to be a setting I am missing. The sample Apple h264 videos from the days of Tiger worked flawlessly on my iBook when it was new so the CPU must be capable of decoding it. I really can't understand this.
Also, since I made my videos in English for my family, I had to create soft subtitles for my wife's Chinese family, and I can't get players like QT with perian or MPlayerX to sync them properly to an AVI encoded with DivX, they only sync well with the iPhone 4 m4v/mp4 formatted files I made. This is a real pickle.
So now I may need three or four copies of each video, LOL. I need to hardcode the subtitles if I want to use AVI to playback on older machines, and keep the mp4 file for the iDevices too, while keeping higher quality h264 videos for my American relatives...
If h264 is compatible with my iBook, what is the proper encoding settings? Must I dramatically lower the settings or frame rate? I can settle on 2 copies of each video that way. One iBook/G4/eMac compatible video that syncs correctly with my srt soft subs, and another version that works well with my iPhone 4 and iPad.
All in all, I will end up with more than 3 or 4 version of each video. On my late G5 dual core I have the full 720-1080p uncompressed master files. On my i5 iMac I have the h264 compressed versions for distribution, and lower versions for my iDevices. Now I need to keep either full MPEG-2 files for the iBook to play, or convert to older formats like DivX AVI for our family's legacy machines. I am running out of hard disk space quick now, LOL.
    Is there an easier way?

  • Video Capture on recent Windows 8.1 Tablets shows very dark video

    Hello,
I switched from direct show to media foundation to capture video from webcams. It is a desktop application and works well with both direct show and media foundation on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 desktop computers for a lot of different webcams.
Trying the same application on a Windows 8.1 Atom based tablet, the video is very dark and green.
I tried it on the following tablets (all of them show the above described behavior):
    -Acer T100A (camera sensor MT9M114, Atom 3740)
-Dell Venue Pro 11 (camera sensor OV2722 front, IMX175 back - Atom 3770)
    -HP Omni 10 5600 (camera sensor OV2722, IMX175 - Atom 3770)
I capture using IMFMediaSession, building a simple topology with a media source and the EVR.
TopoEdit shows the same strange behavior
MFTrace does not show any errors (at least I do not see any errors)
In case an external usb camera is used on all these tablets, the video is fine.
The SDK Sample MFCapture3d3 works fine, it uses the source reader for capturing - I verified the media type of the source used there, it is the same I use in my application (same
stream descriptor, same media type, verified with mftrace)
The "CaptureEngine" video capture sample from the SDK also works as expected, however, I need Windows 7 compatibility and would like to use the same source on both platforms
When using direct show, all the above mentioned tablets show only a fraction of the sensor image when capturing with lower resolutions (e.g. 640x360), the colors of the video are
fine. I tried it with the desktop app of Skype and GraphEdit, same behavior (only a fraction of the video is shown, colors are fine) - Skype for destkop apparently uses a DirectShow source filter.
Has anyone tried capturing the camera of an Atom z3700 series tablet with media foundation using the media session? If so, is special handling of the media source required on these tablets?
If required, I will post some code or mftrace logs.
    Thanks a lot,
    Karl

On the contrary of my previous post, the MFTrace file shows an error:
    "COle32ExportDetours::CoCreateInstance @ Failed to create {FEB9695C-C7DF-4D40-8019-00FA047288FF} KSPlugin Class (C:\Windows\system32\IntelCameraPlugin.dll) hr=0x80004005 E_FAIL"
This dll contains the Intel Camera MFT. While it is on the specified location, it cannot be loaded. According to the Windows Driver Kit documentation, a camera MFT is used in windows store device app.
My assumption is that this MFT is responsible for doing post processing of the video stream from the camera. Since it cannot be loaded, the video stream is dark with a green color fault.
By the way, setting brightness or exposure via IAMVideoProcAmp and IAMCameraControl has no effect, Setting/reading these properties returns S_OK, the properties are stored correctly but obviously ignored.

  • Compressor 4 not compressing the video, only audio.

    Hi,
I send my video to Compressor 4 from Final Cut Pro X for encoding into MPEG-2 for a DVD
Compressor encodes the audio but fails on the video.
Before sending my video to compressor I deleted all render files and re-rendered the video, doing that made no difference.
Have tried a number of time but can not get it to encode both video and audio.
Has any one got any idea's what the problem is?
    Thanks
    Barry

My guess is you're not doing anything wrong - at least not in Compressor.
I'm not a big fan of the Send-to-Compressor workflow – whether it's from X or the legacy version. And I imagine that were you to export a Quick Time movie, using Export Media, and brought that file into Compressor, you'd get the two elementary streams that DVDSP wants. Try that with a short test project.
But that doesn't explain why you're getting these fails from X and you're able to get successful jobs completed from 7. My experience with the new programs hasn't all been clear sailing either. When I've run into oddball behavior, excessive beachballs, etc., with one exception one of three things has worked to restore order: trash preferences (I use Digital Rebellion's tool), repair permissions, delete render files. Once, none of that worked and I had to reinstall.
    Good luck.

  • Dark Video From Media Encoder

Imported quicktime video is dark in encoder. It makes no difference what format, codec or anything else I select in the format screen. When I view the quicktime file side by side with the preview and final encoded video the Adobe file is darker. My system is a Mac 8 core with HD 5770 video card and Blackmagic decklink card to output on external monitor. The video is exported from Avid Media Composer using quicktime prores codec 1080I although any quicktime file no matter where it comes from is dark in encoder.

Have you checked the output in AME? I always check that before I hit go to make sure that I haven't fouled something up and that the in and out points are what I want. I spot check all along the timeline.
I'm thinking that you have some parts of the Premiere Pro project that are shots or sequences that have been "Replaced with After Effects Composotion." If this is the case, does the blackness happen in one of these shots? If it does I'd suggest trying to render that shot in AE and replace it in the PPro Timeline. If After Effects is really crashing you'll be able to find out why.
A little more detail about your project would also help.

  • I'm new to FCPX and Compressor 4.  My HD video looks terrible when uploaded to YouTube and are no longer 720 or 1080p HD.  Are there codes or a secret handshake to have my HD video remain HD on youtube.  All help appreciated.

I have been editing in FCP X 10.0.6 and have had success with that on my Mac Book Pro Retina.  But when I go to compress the 1 minute video detined for YouTube inputing that I wish for it to remain in HD (720 and or 1080p) via Compressor 4, the video compresses and I upload it to youtube via their uploader and when the video is played back it looks aweful.  Needless to say it is no longer HD and very blurry.  Is there any help you can give me with step by step codes to follow to ensure my 1 minute video is viewable in HD? I sure would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Thanks a million Russ for you time and input.  I have recompressed my project several times and that aspect has worked a charm.  But I seem to come unstuck when I upload my compressed video to youtube only.  All the presets seem fine and I have done it using either ProRes or Youtube/Vimeo HD options.  I have just left them on my desktop and uploaded to youtube via their uploader from there after sucessfully compressing them with Compressor 4.  Yet, there seems to be no improvement in the picture quality.  Mind you the sound is fine.  I will get busy with some screenshots if you still think they would be handy.  Many thanks again for your consideration. I really had hoped it was as simple as a secret handshake too. Darn. LOL  -RR

  • Video filter for dark video?

I have some video shot in a dark party, is there a video filter that will help (as much as it can, I'm not expecting miracles!)
    Thanks!

There are several filters which will lighten your video but of course you will get increased video noise (grain).
Go to Effects>Video Filters>Image Control and try the Brightness, Gamma or Level filters.

  • Dark Video with ATI 9600 XT (need new card?)

    Hi all,
I watch alot of quicktimes on my Mac (write music to picture).
In general, the movies are very dark compared to view them on
any of the PCs or my Macbook for that matter. Specifically,
everything is very Red and Dark. I have tried many adjustments,
looked at different movies etc. I really thought is was the Viewsonic
monitors until today when I replaced them with HP w2207(s)
Same thing. The monitors are brighter and it is slightly improved but
it is not the issue. So, I suspect the video card has an issue.
This is a PPC G5 2.5 dual with the ATI 9600 XT 128vram
All updates on QT. Today I tried a commercial DVD which ran in DVD
player, same thing. Can anyone shed any light on this? I am considering
buying the ATI 9800 PRO 256 from B&H but I don't want to keep
throwing money at it if there is some other issue I am missing.
The HP monitors are amazing BTW. 22"@ $250 each from Tigerdirect but I
probably would not have bought them at this time if I had not
convinced myself the Viewsonics were the issue....KWIM?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Forums!
There is currently only one BEST solution for your situation available for a Mac G5 2.0 AGP. It is the The RADEON X800 XT Mac Edition with ADC and DVI Dual Link connectors. As seen here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ATI%20Technologies/100435317/
This gives you a Dual Link DVI connector for the 30" ACD.
The remaining ADC port can be converted to DVI output for your 20" LCD with this:

  • Dark video Flash video from Quicktime on PCs

I have uploaded some Quicktime .mov files with H.264 compression to Google video but on a PC, the Flash video that plays is very dark during night scenes. (It looks fine when played on a Mac). The same file plays fine in Quicktime on PCs though.
Does this happen because of the compression on the original file? Is there a better way to prep the original file before encoding it to Flash that takes care of this?

Flash Video, unlike MPEG-4, doesn't automatically adjust to the gamma differences between Mac's and PC's.
QuickTime Pro Export Movie to QuickTime Movie and use the MPEG-4 video codec (even H.264) should adjust the gamma difference.
Since your experience suggests otherwise you should use the HSL Filter (again, export to QT Movie using QT Pro) and use the Filter button (Options) at export.
Make sure your frame (preview) is in the timeline prior to export and you'll get a "preview" of the filter action before you export.
