Compressor 4.1.1 dropping frames of audio
When a video is compressed using Compressor 4.1.1 we are seeing single frames of audio dropping at random points in the compressed video. In each of these screen shots the original prores video is the middle track, the bottom track is the first time trying an encode, and the top track is the second time trying the encode. They are going from ProRes 422 1920x1080 to h.264. This happens regardless of the destinatin resolution. The video is uneffected.
We've been having the same problem, with one difference. The dropouts aren't happening at random points, they are happening right where the segments are stiched back together. If I see for example that Compressor is breaking the piece into 3min segments to process, I know I'll have to check for dropouts at the 3min, 6min & 9min points in the final m4v. (Though in truth, there is not a dropout at every stich point, but quite a few). We have had this happen not only when using multiple computers, but when simply using multiple instances on our 12-core Mac Pro.

Dropped Frames and Audio Drop Outs???
PowerMac G5 1.8GHz Mac OS 10.5.7 4GB RAM 250GB Hard Drive
Final Cut Express 4.0.1
Sony DCR-TRV310
When I attempt to do a direct capture via firewire I am only able to get one or two seconds of video before FCE complains that it has reached the end of the tape.
If I try to capture from the tape instead of direct it captures OK but the video blinks like it has dropped a frame and the audio is full of drop outs, pops and other noises. Those noises are not there when I listen to the tape directly on the camera.
Is my machine to slow?
I have tried several different firewire cables and all of the firewire ports. I have rebooted and made sure I have all the latest updates.
I also have a DCR0SR80 and a DCR-SR220 but neither of those have firewire however when I import the video into FCE (after converting formats) that video plays fine. I would really like to use the TRV310 though since I can capture directly.
Suggestions? Thanks.
- C. ThomasI have a MacTopus (8-core) and also had one particularly bad video import. FCE 3.5 would complain and stop importing so often that I gave up and used iMovie to import the DV footage from the camera. Then I imported that footage into FCE. Apparently iMovie is not so picky and tends to ignore timecode info when importing. If the timecode info is not critical for you - try iMovie.

Dropped frames or out-of-sync audio
Using Sony HDR-FX1 and FCE-HD is set to DV-NTSC. I've also tried DV-NTSC Firewire Basic. I've been trying various suggestions I've found in the Discussions to cure dropped frames that prevent me from capturing and out-of-sync audio making footage I do capture useless. Mac is running 10.4 with 5.5 GB of RAM and dual 2 GHz G5.
I'm capturing to my main hard drive which has plenty of space - when I'm done editing, I archive old footage on an external drive.
"Abort capture on dropped frames" is currently checked. Lately, this means I can't get more than a few seconds without the capture stopping. This never used to happen, now it happens all the time no matter what tapes I'm capturing from.
If I uncheck it, the audio on the captured footage is out of sync. Over time, as I've been trying to trouble shoot this using the Discussions, my projects remain unfinished and deadlines are looming sooner and sooner.
If someonce could please help me I'd be very grateful.Hi(Bonjour)!
Did you shoot in DV or HDV ?
Did you try to capture HDV with Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 (or 50 for europe)?
Does you downconvert HDV shooted to DV upon capturing from camcorder ?
DV-NTSC 48 kHz is the way to go with downconverted material.
Does your DV audio setting is 16 bit on FX1 ? (HDV is a fixed one).

Dealing with dropped frames and out of sync audio
Hi!
I'm using Final Cut Studio 3 and I'm trying to record some video from a pretty old MiniDV-camera. The problem is that a have some dropped frames and when I record the whole thing it gets out of sync.
By default Final Cut aborts the capture (without saving) when it finds dropped frames. That won't work for me. I start recording, it records a couple of minutes and then it just aborts without saving anything.
I tried to record the entire tape when using the option of not aborting on dropped frames. I recorded the entire video but not it gets more and more out of sync later and later in the video.
So, do you have any suggestions on how to deal with this? Maybe I can use an external application for this cause I haven't found a way to deal with this in Final cut.
Best

Compressor 4 drops frames when converting 25fps image sequences
I am using Compressor 4 to batch convert 30fps and 25fps 1080 tiff image sequences to Uncompressed 10bit 422.
I have created custom presets for both 30fps and 25fps.
The 30fps conversions are fine.
But the 25fps conversions have missing or dropped frames and the resulting clip is too short. For example a 106 frame image sequence becomes 88 frames when converted to Uncompressed 10bit 422 QT. (which suspiciously similar to the 83.33% difference between 25 & 30 fps)
I have double checked my setting and can not find a problem (see grab)
Any suggestions much appreciated.Update: I have found a work around for this problem, but it is not pretty!
By using the 30fps setting even for 25fps sequences, every frame gets included in the resulting QuickTime. But it plays at the wrong frame rate, so I then use Cinema Tools to change the frame rate to 25fps. Then everything is fine.
As Compressor 4 has been around for while, I can't believe this hasn't come up before! -
New to FCP. Dropped frames when playing section in the timeline w/audio, Viewer plays fine tho. Plays for bout 1 sec with no sound, nothing showing coming through the audio meters. Problem came out the blue, made no conscious changes to settings. FCP 7.0.3. iMac, 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5. OS10.8.4. If any other info needed please let me know, will be happy to provide it. Thanx.
Thank you for the help. Below is my Source footage and sequence settings.
The other footage I have on the timeline is an mp3 file made in Garage Band and some footage I sent to Motion to edit. I do have some offline media on there since I switched computers but FCP had been working fine for a few months with it on there. I have not tried trashing my FCP Preferences. If I did would I have to back up my project? -
Mov files dropping video and audio frames CC 2014
I have been experiencing playback issues in Premiere and just got off the phone with Adobe support. It appears that there is known issue with .mov files dropping video and audio frames that will likely be fixed in the next release. My entire project is .mov files and we need to get some serious editing done to complete a rough cut of our film. As a bandaid, we have reverted the playback renderer to software only and I am experimenting with different preview file formats to see if I will have less dropped frames. I want to avoid converting my media from mov files at all costs as this would be very time consuming with over 100 hours of footage.
Please let me know if you have any other workarounds!

Unfortunately, MOV can hold all sorts of "stuff." See this article for some more detail: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037?tstart=0
Can you let us know what is inside that MOV "wrapper?"
Thanks, and good luck,

Audio clip dropping frames/skipping
I opened up a project in Premiere Pro CC, and the audio waveforms were gone although the track was enabled. When I opened the audio track in the source monitor, the entire audio clip was completely compressed from 3:04 to 1:33 and was skipping pretty badly when I played it. I tried converting it to mp3 and aiff but with no luck. How do I fix this?
The audio should be 48k, 16 bit, stereo (or mono). But the sample rate should be 48k.
32-bit floating point refers to video rendering, not audio.
What school is this, BTW? And tell us about the networking configuration, please, so we can try to figure out your dropped frames issue. -
Pro application support 2008 05 causes dropped frame warnings! stops audio
yep. downloaded the update, everything worked fine before. nothing in the system has changed. no you can not adjust audio levels while playing back. It just stops and gives a dropped frame warning. if you click dont warn again, it still stops playing back..... It is a big problem for me. PLEASE APPLE HELP!

Several of my mini DV tapes have audio dropped frames. Intermittent audio gaps are mostly one frame in length.
There's no problem at all with the visual portion of the video.
Does Audition have a way to automatically fill in audio gaps? If not, can anyone name another software solution for this problem?
thank you a lotAudition cannot do it automatically. Anyway it depends very much on the nature of the audio that is missing.
That said using the Spectral View in Auditions Editing screen will make fairly easy to do manual repairs by selecting, copying and pasting similar audio over the gaps. -
Dropped frames; audio out of sync; won't capture
Running the Intel of version of 3.5
I'm getting dropped frames and this message:
"The audio sample rate of one or more of your captured media files does not match the sample rate on your source tape. This may cause the video and audio of these media files to be out of sync."
AND... when I get the dropped frames everything before that point is not recorded and captured to my bin.
What's going on?Double check your Easy Setup matches the tapes audio
rate and also:
Does the tape have any LP bits on it?
Al- I understand the Easy Setup, but how do I know the tapes audio ra te and whether it has any LP bits (whatever that is) on it?

Different Audio rates & audio formats = drop frames?
I´m getting a lot of drop frame errors during playback in the time line.
Now that I want to print my movie to tape the drop frames of course disturb this process, making it impossible.
I noticed that I have material with different audio rates and audio formats. Could this cause it and how do I make a conversion so that all of my audio is the same rate & format.
Audio captured with my camcorder is: 48KHz, 16-bit integer.
CD music in time line is: 44.1KHz, 16-bit integer.
Timeline is: 48KHz, 32-bit floating point
(The things that FCP suggests to do when drop frames occur; turning RT to Safe, buying a faster computer etc. havn´t helped, so the problem must be somewhere else)You could try exporting your sequence as a self contained QuickTime Movie. This would give you one file with one set of rates and formats. Be sure to set up the export for 48Khz 16 bit. Once that's done, import the file back to your project, place it in a new sequence and try printing that to tape.
If you're just concerned with getting smooth playback in the timeline you could also try doing an audio mixdown. This is a good thing to do before printing to tape as well.

Optimizing work flow in FCP on new iMac? (dropped frames)
Hello-
I've recently purchased a new iMac, first in about 6 years. I'm looking for some advice about optimizing my work flow in FCP. I am largely self-taught, using FCP for hobbyist/amateur video.
Until this new computer, I have been using FCP on other people's Macs (schools, arts institutions, etc), only resorting to my old Powerbook when absolutely necessary. So I have not had to worry about performance issues until now.
I am shooting on a Kodak Zi8 pocket cam in 1080p HD .MOV files, 1920x1080 H.264, AAC audio.
In my first attempts at editing the footage, I find that I am getting dropped frames on playback at every edit point - any time I cut between shots, add titles, etc.
(I also tried editing some much smaller, compressed files (QT 854x480, H.264, AAC audio) in the timeline and had the frame drop problem.)
Also, when I add titles, they do not preview render - I have to render them completely to be able to playback.
When I allow FCP to change the sequence settings to match the clip, I get the following:
1920 x 1080
Aspect: HDTV 1080i (16:9)
Pixel Aspect: Square
Field Dominance: Upper (Odd)
Editing Timebase: 29.97
In this instance I am editing footage that is stored on the local HD, but I have also tried editing footage from a USB 2.0 external drive, and got the same dropped frame problem.
...its a little frustrating to get these performance issues on this new computer, so I hope that someone here can help me resolve some of my problems. Hopefully this is a work flow issue, but if its a lack of hardware, well, shame on me for not looking into it enough.
thanks in advance.Hi -
H.264 is a recording and delivery format, but as you have discovered, it is very difficult to edit. Its qualities of recording a high quality image in a small file size, which make it attractive for use in Flash based camcorders, makes it very difficult for FCP to work with. Attempting to work in H.264 makes FCP drop frames, require constant rendering, etc.
The best solution is to convert your footage to an edit friendly file format, such a ProRes LT or AIC. There will be minimal impact on the quality of the image. This conversion will result in files that are much larger than your original files, but will work easily in FCP.
You don't say if you have FCS or just FCP, but if you do have FCS then you can use Compressor to do the conversion.
Hope this helps. -
Drop Frame being read as Non-Drop Frame
Hey,
I'm working in FCP HD 5.1.4 and our guys are shooting audio at drop frame, and video at drop frame, and yet when we import the media into FCP, the Video is in Drop frame, but the audio appears to be Non-drop so we're getting BAD sync (some clips 30 seconds, others up to a min.). We're using TOD T/C and it's really important that we convert it cuz we'll shoot 8 hr days, and the first few clips arn't that bad but after so many hours, the sync gets worse and worse.
We're using XDCAM Sony PDW-1500 deck for the video transfer and the audio is BWFs from an external Audio receiver, then it's backed up on lacie drives (prob using compressor) then we're syncing in FCP.
Any thoughts?
FraserFraserPost, according to Apple in the Late-breaking FCP news PDF on pg.4, Broadcast Wave Audio Files imported will always be interpreted with non-drop frame TC.
Highlight the clip in the bin, choose Modify Menu option and choose Timecode. You can then change it to drop frame in the options panel.
Then your material should synch up.
For future reference but still notable, if you import an aiff, mp3 or another type of audio file without TC, the file will create TC dictated by the Sequence preset setting. This I found out the hard way. One has to shut down FCP and start it up again for the change to take effect on material imported.

Dropped frames while using multi bit rates in Flash Media Encoder 3
I’m using the Adobe Flash Media Encoder 3 to stream live video to a host computer at 200 Kbps. At the same time, I’m saving a copy to my hard drive at 350 Kbps. The live stream signal seems to be ok. The saved stream has dropped frames. Total bandwidth is about 615 Kbps. I’ve looked at performance marking software to see if my hard drive is slow and to check my CPU speed. I can’t see what I need to save a better copy and still keep the live stream.
Is this just a need for more CPU speed?
The encoder is on a Dell Optiplex 360 Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 @2.53GHz with 3GB RAM. The hard drive is a 152GB IDE ST3160815AS. It has write caching enabled on the disk.I saw your request for the log file in a different post. This is one of them that was made from my encoding. I don't see any answers in it.
