Compressor 4.1.1 mangling audio on compression to .m4a

I have been using Compressor 4.1.1 and earlier to batch compress a large number of mono 44.1 kHz 16-bit .aiff voiceover files. I am using AAC compression to create .m4a files. I have done hundreds, perhaps thousands, of these files successfully using a droplet created on my desktop with Compressor 4.1.1.
On two different computers (a brand new Macbook Pro and a 2010 Mac Pro) after the 10.9.2 update, every single one of the .m4a files I produce with Compressor 4.1.1. has a "pop" at the beginning of the resulting file on playback. There is also a small, but audible section of audio has gone missing (usually a syllable or less, depending on how closely trimmed the initial silence was).
I will report this to Apple as a bug. Does anyone else see this misbehavior?

Hi Larry, you mention this has occured cooincidently AFTER you applied the OSX 10.9.2 update? Just a thought.. at the announcement I noticed one of the items in the 10.9.2 update (detailed here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1725was a remedy for "fixes an issue that may cause audio distortion on certain Macs" and the maintenace MIGHT have smacked around some objects on your OSX... who knows.
So... consider...
Just as a thought, you might want to perform a very basic "Repair Disk Permissions".. and NOTE (contrary to parotting on these forums) that this ACTION only affects objects that are NOT in the /users/ path, thus only system related stuff.
To this, I'd suggest you use the MAVERICKS Recovery partition to do it rather than the D.U.app in /applications) .. it's quick and simple (restart with OPTION key held down, this use DISK UTILITY.. 4th task from the top).. very fast .
Rerun your batch and look for any errors when you play it back wth QUICK TIME PLAYER.app (system logs).
Keep your expectations low.
You might also look in http://forums.creativecow.net as well as I recall seeing this somewhere.

FWIW, I (and others) advise customers to RUN the Disk Utility / Repair disk Permisions" after any maintenance (installtions / updates)..

Hi everyone -
I'm having an audio issue when playing files in iTunes 8.1.1 (10) and Quicktime Pro 7.6 (472) . I'm using ia Dual 2.7 Ghz PowerPC G5 running OS X Version 10.4.11.
Recently I discovered that all of my audio files (music and spoken word podcasts) started sounding compressed, hollow, and tinny, both when I'm playing the files out of my speakers (Harman Kardon Soundsticks) or headphones (Sony MDR-7606).
At first I posted this message over on the iTunes forum, but after playing the files in Quicktime I discovered that they still sounded compressed. The majority of my audio files are ripped from my CD collection using 256 kbps, 44.100 kHz, VBR, optimized for Velocity Engine.
I don't think it's an issue with the files themselves - they sound normal when I play them using the same version of iTunes or Quicktime on my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.6, which makes me think it's a software issue with OS X, or perhaps a hardware issue - but I'm totally at a loss as to what would cause this change in audio quality.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you so much for this info! I have been trying to figure this out for months... Been driving me crazy why the audio sounded compressed and hollow when listening to it from within iTunes. Listening to 'previews' of the same audio files from the desktop sounded WAY better - now they both sound the same.

AC3 audio not compressing properly

I am compressing under the DVD selection. Everything was working great, until today. The compressor audio output for the AC3 audio has changed (different icon like a itunes file) and the DVD shuts down when I try to import the asset.
I cannot preview the audio. I went back and looked at earlier projects and I could always preview the audio in Finder. Any suggestion? I need to deliver the DVD on this project in 4 days. Help!

Presuming you are making an SD DVD you will most likely need to lower your video data rate.
If compressor is giving you problems this could be done in DSP.
Preferences/Encode/ If your show is under 70 minutes I would do average 6.5/max 7.7 and motion est. -best / background encoding. If your source is longer duplicate compressor data rates based on length settings. Drag your source movie from FC into assets.
This will create a MPG folder where your project is. Create an AC3 from the aiff and see how that works. Mac DVD player app is a good way to check and see how your burned disc will look. Build/check/burn from DSP or Toast.

Audio ac3 compression weirdness

I compressed my audio with Compressor 3.0.1 using ac3 like usual. When I view it in DVD SP 4.2.0 in the previewer it looks and sounds fine. After I build in DVDSP and view it in Apple DVD Player (or on my Home Theater) is where I get the issue.
When vocals are present and the music is at its peak or heavy bass hits the volume drops 4dbs or so. When vocals are not present the audio is fine. The audio gives a pumping sound or is squashed like when you put heavy a compression/limiter filter on a track.
In Compressor I have my ac3 set at -31 for dialogue normalization and Compression Preset set to None and all the filters are unchecked including the full bandwidth Channel filters. But like I mentioned I get the problem after DVDSP build. This has happened on several projects. Are there settings in DVDSP that I don't know about??

No Audio When Compressed To AC3?

when i compress my movies (from fcp using compressor, mpeg-2 video and aiff audio), everything is fine. when i change my preset to mpeg-2 video and ac3 audio...i get no audio when i bring my project into dvd studio pro. there is an ac3 file, but it's just silence. any ideas what i could be doing wrong?
I have some menu music that is aiff...and that plays in the dvdsp simulator just fine...is the ac3 audio not playing because i have two different formats of audio in my project? if i change my menu music to ac3, will that work? it takes so long to compress a movie and run a test, i thought i'd ask some pros for some help to see if i'm doing something that's obviously wrong first.

I think you answered your own question. All audio should be AC3.

No audio when compressing .mov to Mpeg transport stream (m2t)

Since reinstalling OSX and FCS2 I don't get audio when I compress a quicktime movie to mpeg transport stream, used to be able to do it. I'm playinh the m2t in mpeg streamclip and assume it will handle audio, settings in compressor look ok, (48K 16 bit) although the button for multiplexed mpeg i/layer 2 audio is greyed out and unticked !?

Answering my own query here, but in case it helps someone else ... there appears to have been sound all along, at least since I ticked the mpeg audio box on the extra tab. When the file is playing in mpegstreamclip you have to work the volume fader down and up again at which point the sound comes on (yes it was faded up initially)
Wierd one, its almost as though there was a faulty physical fader rather than a virtual one.

Compressor and 4-channel mono audio tracks

I have a bit of a dilemma that I'm trying to work out. Wondering if anyone has a good solution.
I have footage shot at 720p 25 with 4 mono tracks of audio (shot on a Panasonic P2 camera). I conformed it in Cinema Tools to 720p 23.98. Works great and looks great. Obviously there is a pitch shift, which I can correct in FCP using the AUPitch filter.
However, there is one issue with this. When I render the filter on a conformed clip I get a bunch of pops and clicks. I believe this is because the sample rate of the clips now read 46034 and don't match with the sequence settings of 48000 khz. So Final Cut doesn't like that too well.
I know the sample rate hasn't actually changed because I've tested re-exporting a clip from FCP and bringing it back in with 48000 khz sample rate. Clips is exactly the same and the sample rate metadata reads correctly. FCP likes it (no green bar on the audio) and the AUPitch filter renders fine.
My dilemma is:
a) is there a way to easily batch changing the header of the sample rate for lots of clips like this?
OR
b) is there a way in Compressor to re-compress audio (as opposed to pass-through) that won't mix down 4 mono tracks to a 2-channel stereo pair or single mono track. I cannot figure out a way to do that in Compressor.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated! I'm sure someone has gone through this before...

Never seen a similar post, sorry not to offer aything than the rather lame suggestion you take the 4-channel audio portion of the original clip to Soundtrack and mess with it there instead of inside FCP.

Garbled audio after compression

I'm fairly new to Final Cut Studio, so forgive my ignorance if the answer to this problem is obvious. When I send a project to Compressor for Quicktime formatting, the final product audio sounds garbled. AC3 dolby codec sounds fine, but Quicktime files are a mess. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

What are your
• sequence settings in FCP,
• settings of your video and audio.
Select your footage in the timeline, hit command-9. Post the info.

Best QuickTime Audio/Video Compression Settings?

Hello there,
Before inserting an iMovie to an iDVD project, I must compress it in QuickTime as it won't fit if "shared" as full-quality.
What Audio and Video compression settings will provide, preserve, or enhance the audio/video content? I have the latest version of QuickTime Pro and am pretty savy with it.

Does Compressor 4 tell you how long the compression actually took?

I'm new to Compressor and compression in general.
When I "Submit" a video for compression in Compressor 4, it creates an entry in the History window that shows you when the video was submitted for compression. It also gives an estimated time for completion while the video is being compressed (though it seems to me it fluctuates and can be wildly inaccurate).
I usually leave the computer while the compression is happening. If it's done when I come back, I don't know how long the compression actually took. I don't see anything in the entry in the History window that tells me that. Is there any way to know when exactly the compression completed, or how long it took?

Hi Jd, if you have SUBMITTED a job to a cluster (maintained by Qmaster) [not this computer], the transcode job pushed to Qmaster by compressor.app draws events and conditions in the various log in Qmaster. You can find these logs in your ~/library/application support/apple qmaster/logs for the cluster , theater vice controller, the transcoder daemons and job controller. These contain the start , end and I believe ELAPSED times for each job . It doesn't accumulate by a BATCH .. I will stand corrected though.
Simply browse these logs this with console.app. U can ofcourse "go troppo" and write some shell, perl or apple script to develop some system management facility records for your clients accounting by doing this... Just parsing the text records...
Anyway I recall,his info u want for JOB COMPLETION (elapsed time) is there despite its coarse data. Sadly I have not found a way to detail the CPU, storage and I/o .. Seems too much to do for my needs.
As u state, the SHARE MONITOR.app is for viewing dynamic job. It's a bit hit and miss when using over a cluster. Since mountain lion, it seems to jam up a,lots and magically ,come back to Liffey after many internal messages (see logs) that it failed on socket x n y ..... Sounds like its in need of some stability and robustness additions.
I've also found for very long and numerous multipass segmented transcodes that share monitor gets over whelmed.... Especially when the share monitor.app UI is utilised to "Expand all"... It gets super busy collecting traffic from Qmaster ..if u are using a cluster.

Compressor 3 taking far too long to compress H.264

But thought I would start a new topic.
Something is very wrong. I sent a 9 minute MPEG-2 file to Compressor to have compressed to H.264. (H.264 compression is what I would gather many of us are using Comp for in the first place).
I know Compressor can do H.264 comp at about 1.43:1 from tests. So a 9 minute clip should take, 6 minutes or so, and with Q Master it should be even faster. Well, Comp reports 8-9 hours. What the heck is going on.
I have taken MPEG Stream Clip and done the same H.264 output and it takes about 6-7 minutes. Something is up with Comp 3.
Now I have turned off Q Master, Reset the Comp 3 BG Processing, Quit Comp and relaunch, maybe reboot, possibly trash all prefs related to Comp.
And still 8-9 hours?
A 9 minute clip should take 6 minutes and as I say, with Q Master, even faster, that is the point of Q Q Master services

Took me awhile to get Compressor going reliably but now it has been pretty solid.
I am not sure what settings you are using to encode (for instance Frame Controls can add alot of time), but 8-9 hours for 9 Minutes seems rather extreme. Note though that you are using an MPEG-2 (m2v?) file. You may be better off converting to another Codec or better yet go to the source material you are double encoding.
I just set up a Compressor setting on an Octo 2.8 with everything pushed to the Max on Frame Controls and set to resize a 6 Minute HD AIC stream down to H.264 @25% of the size of the original and sent out to "This Computer" and not the Cluster and it took 17 minutes or so. Even with converting from m2v it does seem like it is taking way too long on the machine for you.
I saw you had done some troubleshooting, but do you have any other details? Was his a clean install of the OS and Studio, or were there upgrades along the way? That caused some issues in the past - meaning between upgrades to Leopard and/or installing Studio 2 over Studio 1.

Compressor gives extremely long estimated times to compress, and it doesn't work. What is the problem?

Every time I click submit, my copressor starts giving me errors that appear and disappear so fast and I cannot read. Then the compress times keep on going up dramatically.
I am sure my compressor has a problem bit I am not sure what it is.

Are you sure that you did not install a fake? there are many and they look convincing.
Did you download it yourself from Adobe's website, or was it handed to you by a Black/Red dialog?

Batch monitor with Compressor 3 does not say how long compression will take?

It seems to me that Batch Monitor no longer says how long compression will take.

Although Shane is right about "not selfcontained" there are reasons to export selfcontained. If you think you ever might want to go back to this file, I strongly recommend making it selfcontained. A reference qt, points to the original media files and any material that is already rendered. If you try and access this file after you have deleted any of the media or renders, you will have serious problems.

Audio capture recording .mov - .m4a

I accidentally saved an audio capture recording with QT without switching it to save as audio. It's now a .mov (saved as movie) instead of .m4a. How do I convert from the .mov to .m4a? Also, is there any way to make it save as audio (.m4a) by default?

A follow-up question: When audio capture is stopped, how can the client program find out when all the audio data has been written to a file on the server. The client needs to know this to perform subsequent operations on the audio file.
