Compressor 4 causing other programs to hang...

I just used Compressor 4 to transcode 3 roughly 3.5 minute long 720p25 Quicktime None files to Quicktime ProRes 422.
I must say, it was faster than I remember it being in the past (despite not neing 64-bit yet!!), but it made everything else on my computer (Safari, Mail, Echofon, iTunes) hang with beach balls until it was done.
Surely that isn't right?!   Especially for a 2011 Quad 2.3 i7 MBP w/ 8GB RAM and on an SSD!!
Anyone else having similar issues?

compressor 3.5 uses qmaster to actually render transcodes and that definitely runs nice (bottom priority, no beach balls) i would assume that if you get beach balls maybe the new qmaster doesn't run as nice process, either that or there are bigger issues at hand.

  • Firefox regularly hangs after an unspecified period of use, and causes other programs to hang, and a forced system shutdown is necessary.

    The firefox browser hangs after an unspecified period of time. Anything from a few minutes after system startup, up to 5-6 hours of use or perhaps more. Attempting to use other programs including windows explorer while firefox is hanging causes those programs to hang also, making a forced shutdown necessary. Occaisionally I've noticed firefox will respond, perhaps after 10 or more minutes. There seems to be no hard disk activity while the program hangs. Memory usage of firefox on my system is usually upwards of 190,000.

    I have circumvented this mostly by running internet explorer, and using Firefox only for browsing when I need to make use of it's addons. In this way I've had the problem re-occur maybe once or twice in the past two weeks. It's not really a solution but it does seem to help, and I'm no longer sure the problem IS firefox but using it certainly exacerbates the problem.
    I've only just updated to firefox 6, so I am not entirely sure how that will go just yet.

  • Frequent updates causing other programs not to work correctly

    I have a fitness computer called Body Bugg. After one of the frequent updates by Firefox, portions of the program stopped working.
    I tried downloading the newest update for Java but the program continues to give me a black screen and displays "done" rather than the normal form that should be displayed.
    I have to completely back out of the internet and go back in for the program to work correctly.
    It doesn't happen in IE. I prefer not to use IE, can you assist with this?
    Thanks,

  • My computer is old and any add-on's take up memory space. Usually these cause other programs to not work. How do I block add-ons?

    Anything that occupies more space prevents my ability to use my computer. I have taken off all pictures, all programs which I can delete (including games from the Windows program.) I cannot download any new programs because it it at a maxiumum of 50% space occupied. I have to keep the older Firefox program because they use less space. Every so often I have to delete firefox and return to earlier versions because too much has been automatically added on. Then my computer refuses to work.

    Also, after [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ updating to the latest Firefox], you can consider the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems Reset Firefox] feature via '''Help''' ('''Alt''' + '''H''') > '''Troubleshooting Information'''. You can also try to update via Firefox '''Help''' ('''Alt''' + '''H''') > '''About Firefox'''.

    It would also be a good idea to periodically clear the cache via '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Clear Recent History'''. Usually the websites cache could be the main reason for the filling up of the hard disk.
    Note: ''This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to.''

    #Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.

    #Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.

    #Now click the ''Clear now'' button.

  • ITunes V5 install causes other programs to crash

    After installing the latest iTunes update I can no longer use several applications. These applications typically crash during while trying to load. Mail.app is the first that I noticed. Camino 0.9b2 would hang and use 100% of the CPU (presumably looping). iCal crashes while trying to start. The add printer facility also crashes, but only while searching for a driver for a USB printer (Lexmark Z43).
    I've tried repairing permissions, but this does solve the problem.
    I noticed in the Mail.app forum that some other people may be experiencing this problem.
    Any ideas on how to get this resolved?

    Ok all...I've tried many, many things and finally gave up and called Apple. You can try this if you had my problem. [I downloaded iTunes 5.0 and QuickTime 7.0.2 and afterwards, not one of my applications worked]
    1. Insert your OSX install Disc 1. Press and hold the letter C while you start up the computer.
    2. Open Disk Utility, click on your HD and click Repair Disk. If everything is ok, go to step 3. If you have a problem, try again until you get an ok message. If you don't get an ok message, call Apple.
    3. Exit Disk Utility and Installer. Shut down computer and restart holding down the SHIFT key. This starts up the computer in Safe boot.
    4. Open your finder>home folder>library. Find the folder labeled MAIL. make a copy and put on your desktop.
    5. Open your finder>home folder>library. Find the folder labeled PREFERENCES. Drag this folder to the desktop. Restart the computer. Try to open some applications. If this works, go to step 6. If it doesn't, call Apple.
    6. Open your finder>hard disk>library>reciepts. Delete the following:
    iTunes.pkg. iTunes4.pkg, iTunesX.pkg Then reinstall iTunes.
    I'm not an expert...so try this at your own risk!
    Best of luck and if you need any clarification, send me an email.

  • Process.waitFor() causes program to hang!

    I've successfully created a Process and run it using Runtime's exec(String path), and the kinds of processes I've successfully run have included Winzip, a WS_FTP Pro script, and a regular .bat file. I've also successfully called waitFor() on these processes, but in this particular case I'm calling a program that takes a file I give it as a parameter and merges its data into a database. I've been doing this procedure for a while (either from a command line or in a .bat file), but now I need to call it from my Java code. Preferably I'd like to waitFor() the process each time because I need to make sure all the files are merged in chronological order. My current test case only uses ONE file, but in reality there will be several. With one file, I can run the program and it appears to run fine (and it runs fast--like maybe a second or two at most), but whenever I call the following line it hangs indefinitely (I've never seen it terminate, even after several minutes):
    focusProcess.waitFor();
    When I just execute that program by itself by calling a .bat file with a hardcoded filename, I get standard output back from the program I'm calling. I'd like to see this output when I run my Java program and it appears to run fine, because I have no way if it IS running correctly! So, I added the following:
    BufferedInputStream bis = new BufferedInputStream(focusProcess.getInputStream());
    StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
    int c;
    while((c=bis.read()) != -1) {
    sb.append(c);
    bis.close();
    I'm not sure if this is the right way to monitor that InputStream that I get from the process, and even if that InputStream is going to give me the standard output from that the process normally writes to the terminal. All I do know is that again, the program seems to hang indefinitely, and I guess it has to do with the fact that maybe this process isn't notifying me that it's terminated, and so I'm still waiting for the rest of that InputStream. And yes, I HAVE tried both of these situations together AND separately (so I know that both pieces of code cause the program to hang).
    Any ideas would be much appreciated!

    Paying attention to the standard output from the running process is good for debugging (and reporting program progression, if necessary) but probably doesn't contribute to the problem you are seeing. The standard input to the process, however, is a different story. If the process you have Runtime.exec'd is waiting for something on stdin, then the OS will block on behalf of the program that is blocking for input and never terminate!
    Try running the exec'd command from the command-line and see if it needs any input (i.e. you have to press a key, or enter, or send EOF) for the program to complete. If this is the case then your Java program must supply that process with the appropriate input or it will just hang.
    As for printing the output from a process... here's a quick proof of concept:
    import java.io.*;
    public class Exec {
        public static void main(String args[]) throws Exception {
            // Make sure we've got something to exec.
            if ( args == null || args.length < 1 ) {
                System.out.println("Usage: java Exec COMMAND [ARGS...]");
                System.exit(1);
            // Run the process and print the output.
            Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(args);
            BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(p.getInputStream()));
            String line;
            while ( (line=in.readLine()) != null ) {
                System.out.println("EXEC: "+line);
    }Hope this helps!

  • Problems printing from other programs after printing using Word automation

    I have an application that uses ActiveX to build a Word document. My print VI is attached. The problem that users are reporting is that after printing a report with my application, they can't print from any other programs until they restart their computer.
    After my print VI runs, the only other Word automation is Document.Close and Application.Quit. I close all my references religiously and winword.exe closes just fine. I don't know what would be hanging around causing other programs to have trouble printing. One thing I don't like is the ActivePrinter property in Word. It changes the default printer in Windows. This is why I reset it using the printer LabVIEW reports as the default. I tried reading ActivePrinter and storing it in a wire, then resetting it with this string, but then even weirder things happened - the printout got all messed up. This is why I'm using the printer that LabVIEW says is the default.
    Has anyone ever encountered anything like this?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Just ran a test and I got a perfect card. Here's what I did.
    1 - create the card and type Command-P.
    2 - select Stylus Photo R200 under Printer
    3 - click on the Advanced button
    4 - in the bottom drop down menu select Paper Handling
    5 - select the radio button "Use documents paper size: 7.00 in x 10.00 in
    6 - now select Print Settings in the 3rd drop down menu
    7 - select the type of paper you're using and the print quality you want. I used Photo and High Speed. (also used plain paper for my test)
    9 - put a piece of 7 x 10 paper in the printer (yes, you'll have to trip the paper beforehand or use card stock designed for this)
    10 - click on Print
    11 - when the paper exits the printer quickly put it back in the printer
    That will do it. Now there is a caveat. Putting it back into the printer before drying tended to get my leading edge nipped. If you use heaver card stock I don't think that will happen but just be aware. If you wait a moment to put the page, turned over, back into the printer to let the ink dry a bit, all you'll have to do is press the middle button which will be blinking red and that will feed the other side thru when you're ready.

    Hi.
    When this happens, please press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and see how much RAM and CPU Firefox is using. If they're sky high, then... Well, that kind of issues are, unfortunately, more common and the we'd like. Thankfully, 99% of the cases are very easy to solve. However, you do need to diagnose what your exact problem is. Do this:
    #run Firefox in safe-mode to disable all extensions and plugins. If this fixes your issues, be them with RAM or CPU usage, then you know it's a problem with plugins or extensions. Proceed to number 2. If safe-mode doesn't fix the issues, then read bellow, after this list;
    #update all extensions and plugins in your Firefox. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
    #disable all extensions and plugins in your Firefox (not running safe-mode). Being certain that, as in safe-mode, the problems you're having have gone away, enable one plugin at a time. You should be certain that you WANT that plugin to be enabled, so keep your overall number of plugins as low as possible. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic plugin, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all plugins (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all.
    #enable one extension at a time. Again, be certain that you WANT that extension to be enabled, so keep your overall number of extensions as low as possible. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic extension, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all your extensions (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all;
    #you're done! You've fixed your problems with problematic add-ons.
    Ok, if disabling all extensions and plugins through safe-mode didn't work to bring Firefox's CPU and RAM usage to good levels, then you have different issue. The most likely scenario is that you have a third party software running on your computer that is messing with Firefox. Do as follows:
    #do a virus/malware check on your computer. If this doesn't fix it, proceed;
    #disable all software running in the background that you don't want to have running in the background (in windows, this is done by pressing WINDOWS+R in your keyboard, typing "msconfig" (without the commas) and pressing enter. Now, under the "Startup" tab, you can uncheck the software you don't want, and reboot your system for changes to take effect. If you're unsure of what software you want running, ask someone with more experience). If this doesn't fix you issues with Firefox, proceed;
    #check your firewall/antivirus/security suite for enabled functions/features that you don't want and/or may be conflicting with Firefox. You'll find that these features are most likely tied to Internet Security features, such as link scanners or URL checkers and the like. If you're not sure they are conflicting with Firefox, simply try to disable to see whether or not that's true. As long as you don't browse the web with your antivirus completely off and your firewall completely turned off, there should be no problems. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
    #check your operating system security options, mainly advanced options that are not configured by default. While it's very unlikely that this may be the cause of the problem (after all, it's the last item on the list), it's remotely possible. If this doesn't do it, I'm out of ideas. Except make sure you've followed my instructions correctly.

    Programs effected:
    iPhoto
    Adobe Acrobat
    iTunes (Only when I open the iTunes Store)
    Problem:
    After about a minute, the program will hang and become unresponsive (pinwheel) but will not crash. I have to shutdown the program manually. The program  will cause my CPU to max out until I force-quit it.
    Any ideas for further diagnosis?

    If there are multiple apps trying to download at once, only one can download at a time and the rest say "Waiting" until it is then their turn. Try this. Double tap the icon of the Waiting app, and it should resume the download.
    If that doesn't work:
    •  Log out of your iTunes store account.  Go to Settings > Store > Sign Out Then press the Home button.
    • Then press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously and don't release them when it brings up the Turn Off screen; keep holding them until the Apple logo appears.
    • After restart, the Waiting should be gone.

  • [solved] Some programs cause problems for sound in other programs.

    Today I noticed that audio has stopped working in some applications, but not others. The programs that I know where it doesn't work are:
    Hotline Miami (game)
    VLC
    Dungeons of Dredmor (game)
    Uplink (game)
    Programs where I know it works are:
    mplayer / smplayer (on the same files where vlc does not work)
    mpd
    Programs run through wine
    Standalone flash player and the firefox flash plugin
    Additionally, when I run a program where audio doesn't work, I have to restart programs where it does. For example, I'll pause mpd, open Hotline Miami, and then quit. When I try to unpause mpd, I'll get the error message "Failed to open audio output". But if I try a couple times, it will eventually resume. It's a similar situation for mplayer. I'll have to quit and restart mplayer a couple times after trying one of the other programs before audio will work.
    Further complicating the matter is that there are no error messages for the programs where audio does not work. I can't seem to track down the problem. I also don't do much with sound beyond using mpd and mplayer, so I don't know when this started.
    My hardware is a Lenovo IdeaPad z580 with integrated Intel HDA audio.
    EDIT: I just noticed that the problem is not what I thought. Part of the problem was simply due to volume. So I can get sound in the listed programs. However, running those programs does still cause the problem for the mplayer and mpd where I have to restart them.

  • Fan spinning up causes programs to hang...

    I've been using a new Satellite A505-S6005 (Win7, i3-330m, 4G RAM) for almost three months now and I like it a lot.  I bought it for general browsing and typing,  messing around with some light-ish imaging and music apps, and playing older games.  It does a great job, except when running certain programs (and most games).
    When I fire up something like FL Studio (a digital audio workstation, which is fairly processor-intensive... and probably more-so because of the standard sound card), it runs great until the fan kicks on.  When that happens, the program hangs up and the sound repeats like a broken record.  After 4 or 5 seconds everything goes back to normal, and the fan slows down again.  This happens again and again roughly every 30 seconds, maybe every minute.
    I thought FL Studio might just be putting too much strain on the CPU (though its in-program CPU meter shows that it never goes above 40% and I don't run any major processes in the background) until I installed an old copy of Warcraft III.  The game does the exact same thing...runs incredibly well and then just locks up for a few seconds when the fan kicks on, then runs incredibly well again...and it came out roughly 8 years ago.  Sometimes it will hang up every 10 seconds depending on how many people are on the screen, which makes it pretty much zero fun.
    Almost all of the games I've installed so far do this to varying degrees.
    So what's up?  The computer is well above the system requirements of these programs.  Why does the fan trigger the lockups?  Does the fan need a ton of processor power because it's really really really smart?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Ian
    P.S. - It does this plugged in and on battery.  I switched the power management options around between active and passive and nothing changed...could something be wrong with my fan?  It's kicking on every 30 seconds or so right now, and I'm just typing this with one browser window open and no other programs running.

    Terrifically old post, but still. I'm on a different model of Satellite, but I'm having a similar issue: every so often, the fan will spin up suddenly, the computer will hang for about a second, then the fan will slow down again and everything resumes as usual. Any ideas? Anyone?

  • Offline Files (Background) Sync makes File Explorer and other programs responding slow

    Hi TechNet,
    I have a problem with Offline Files and
    especially with VPN users.
    For VPN users, the slow-link
    policy is activated with a background
    sync interval of one hour. But, when Offline Files is syncing, their File Explorer is hanging (not responding) by creating new files/folders, deleting files/folder, or rename files/folders. This happens only in their (redirected)UserData
    folder or with other DFS shares which are cached locally. In other programs (Outlook or Office 2010) when they save data in the UserData folder exactly the same things happens (not responding).
    This problem occurs in both the
    internal network and via VPN, so bandwidth is
    not the problem. When the sync is finished, everything is working fine again.
    I've tested:
    - Offline mode with scheduled background sync: problem occurs
    - Online mode with manual sync: problem occurs
    - Rebuild offline cache database: no effect
    - Tested with fresh Windows 8(.1) installations and user profiles: problem occurs
    - Monitoring SMB traffic with WireShark: no result
    - Montoring Windows 8(.1) clients with procmon: no result
    - Tested with full DFS paths: problem occurs
    - Disable IPv6: problem occurs
    - Disable Windows Search: problem occurs
    - Browsing in the Offline Files folder (Sync Center -> Manage Offline Files -> View Offline Files) is very slow (with +- 200 files). This occurs also when Offline Files is not syncing.
    Does anyone have an idea how I can solve this problem?
    Thanks,
    Bas

      Hello Steven,
      First, sorry for the late response, I have tested a few things for you:
    Offline mode with background sync over a VPN connection: During scheduled sync File Explorer hangs. When bypass the cache by using a UNC path (State: Online) there is also a delay, but this is caused by bandwidth.
    Online Mode with Manual Sync over a LAN connection: During sync File Explorer hangs in (redirected)UserData Folders (They are always available offline, maybe this is a problem?). With UNC paths, there is no delay…
    The first folder/file is created slowly, but the second is fast.
    It's like csc
    still
    must initialize
    the cache…or something…
    I m  I made some
    print screens, but I can not upload them because my account is not verified.......
