Compressor 4 clusters

I have a question guys, after messing around with Compressor all night I am F*&@$  off with Apple, why don't they fix this problem. After installing and uninstalling, deleting files, deleting clusters, wasting valuable time, wissing deadlines, what sort of program is this so annoying. It is just that I've invested a lot of money in Apple. I wish I hadn't now, otherwise I would have chucked the computer from one end to the other! I am so fed up with this program. You fix it it works. Into it feels like that it doesn't need to work. it works it doesn't work what is this, I have read a lot of posts about people having the same dam problem as myself, so I know that Im not the only one with this dilemma so why does an apple look in to this! why don't they come up with a solution. Every time you want to speak to them they want to charge you more money for them talking to you is a load of nonsense. It is a load of rubbish. Why do paying customers have to deal with this ****. Now my question after exporting a project from Final Cut X directly to compressor why do my clusters disappear. I have 40g of ram but I can't use it I have 8 cores But is a load of crap, does anyone know how I can use my machine to its full potential. Can anyone help me. Mind the language sorry.

Which model Mac Pro, specifically: 2008 (Mac Pro 3,1) or 2009 and later (Mac Pro 4,1 and later) ??

  • Does distributed processing work best on a wired network?

Tried setting up qmaster (quick cluster) today with two MBa's over a wireless network; the submitted batch job simply
went into waiting mode & I noticed a lot of network traffic (at a slow rate) to my client system; I expected wireless to be
slower than wired but I also expected some sort of asyncrohnous behavior from Compressor/clustering to start the
encoding/compression process while data was being transferred..but cpu idled on both nodes..anyone?

Location Services (including Maps and "Find My Mac") relies on a database of known Wi-Fi access points. You don't necessarily have to be connected to a wireless network, but Wi-Fi does have to be turned on and you have to be within range of one of those access points.

  • Render Benchmarks: GPU vs Quicktime X vs Compressor Quick Clusters vs Compressor distributed

I've been using Final Cut since the early days when Apple acquired the original technology and began bundling apps to create Final Cut Studio,  Along the way, I have used Compressor and now have the latest version installed.  I don't use Compressor much because I've always felt the performance and interface lagged behind third-party apps and now FCPX's GPU rendering.
I've been producing wedding videos for a while.  Due to the long form nature of the ceremonies and the various formats I provide (web/h264, DVD, Blu-ray), I'm even more eager to optimize my rendering times.
I have tried setting up QMaster clusters multiple times over the years but found they were characteristically unreliable and didn't want to spend a lot of time troubleshooting and nursing them.  With the addition of quick clusters in Compressor, I decided to give it a go again this past week.
I have 3 Macs on a gigabit LAN: 2008 Mac Pro 2.8 (8 threads), 2011 iMac i7 3.4 (8 threads), 2011 Mac Mini i5 (4 threads).  All have the same/latest version of ML, FCPX and Compressor.  The Mac Pro is my primary workstation: 24GB RAM, SSD boot drive, RAID0 Media drive for Projects and Events, ATI 5770 GPU.
I have a 50 min 1080 30p timeline with some mullticam clips, titles multiple audio tracks, CC, NR, etc.  After allowing FCPX to background render the entire Timeline (original media/high quality playback), I choose the Share button and send a 3 min segment to a PR422 1080 30p Master destination.
From FCPX shared to PR422 Master: 1:09
    Then the same segment:
From FCPX timeline shared to the default Compressor 1080p Apple Devices (10Mb) destination (not opening Compressor): 14:52
From FCPX timeline shared to Apple Devices 1080p Best Quality destination: 9:21
From Finder using the 3Min PR422 Master Segment file and the "Encode Selected Files" Service at 1080p: 3:50
From Quicktime X using the 3min PR422 Master segment file and 1080p Output format: 3:46
From Quicktime 7 Pro using the 3min PR422 Master segment file and 1080p Output format: 10:44
From Compressor using Apple Devices 1080p (10Mbps): 7:19
    Adobe Media Encoder CS6 using the 3Min PR422 Master segment file w/H264 2Pass VBR 10Target/12Max m192Kb Audio 1080 30p: 6:54
This segment was too short to get a reliable test using Compressor with my "This Computer+" distributed rendering but my tests showed that even with all available threads, the distributed rendering is much slower than GPU rendering or QTX encoding.  I have included screen composites here of the various output files, settings, CPU loads and utilized threads: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/6tgamkjs5z2r6zv/Zg6zcyn3Ya
I realize this IS NOT scientific in that most of the tests have small variations in compression bit rates and 32 vs 64bit processes.  Regardless, I'm confident that for most circumstances, Compressor is slower than most other workflows.  I couldn't find a situation where I would want to use it.
Fastest hands-on workflow: Output a Master PR file then right click the file in Finder and encode to 1080p, about 5min total.
As a side note: Despite setting the quick clusters up by the book, I could never get the nodes to start rendering.  Interesting because I had no problems with "This Computer+" using the available nodes on my  LAN.
    Observations? Recommendations?

  • Compressor 4 Clustering

I am looking to find out if since QMaster has been built into the same interface as Compressor, has anything changed in its stability?
In the past I have spent several hours trying to get Compressor to cluster multiple computers together to render out files.  This never got to any point of stability to where I could use it on a real paying gig.  I am now revisiting this idea now that Compressor 4 has came out as I am assuming since QMaster is now built in to Compressor maybe things are a little more stable and or ...working.
I have since downloaded Compressor4 from the App Store and tried to make this happen, but just when I get each computer to see each other the cluster preset magically disapears.  Or just when I think the preset has stuck and has been saved properly within the Q Administrator this cluster is not an option to choose after hitting Submit within Compressor.  I only have "This Computer" as an option.
    Current Gear In Play:
    - Multiple 12 core mac pro's (Running OS 10.6.8 and 12 gigs of RAM)
    - Avid ISIS shared storage amoungst all computers
    Question at Hand:
Can anyone that has actually already clustered several computers together provide any feedback on the stability and or functionality of this?  And also can you walk me through the key things to check for within the "Share This Computer" and the "Administer Clusters" menu?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jesse Korosi

hi jkorisi, rather than duplicate what many of us do in this thred, I'd suggest if you would:
search download the COMPRESSOR V4 users guide from the apple support manuals areas and check the second last section out for DISTRIBUTED PROCESSING. Its very good. This will help you.
search this forum and others like COW and theres a wealth of information in there.
If you really have no joy then by all means post back for help.

  • Setting up virtual clusters Compressor 4

Could someone Please point me to the workflow or set up where I use Quemaster, etc. to take advantage of my Multiple cores on Quadcore 2011 iMac. All I have discovered is info on virtual Clusters wirth Compressor 3. Confused about shared services, etc. No will not be farming out to other Macs. Just want to take advantage of Multicores on my Machine.
    Thanks

If and when you get this working. I have found for example; using this option to trans-code a video file to ProRes take long to encode. It's some time to rejoin the video file back together. (The same holds ture with having the fast-start option turned on when trans-coding to ProRes.)
This can take up to as much as twice the time to accomplished depending on how fast your drives are...
This opion however works great when encoding to MPEG-2 or h.264.

  • Multiple Compressor/Qmaster problems...clusters and batch monitor launch

    Hi All,
I am continuing to have problems with Compressor and Qmaster. My original problem was that I was trying to create clusters to speed up my workflow. My computer is the only computer in the network. The issue came up when I created a cluster and it would work fine if I dragged in a QT from outside FCP to process in compressor, but if I tried to export a QT from FCP to compressor it would fail. Yesterday as I was about to leave work I was trying to export stuff through compressor and the batch monitor wouldn't launch. Sometimes I could get it to, but the QT it was exporting would disappear once it was processed.
I've deleted the compressor/FCP prefs and I also tried reinstalling compressor/qmaster. I trashed all the files I was supposed to and it couldn't get rid of all of them because it said they were still in use. AHHH!!!! I'm getting a little frustrated. I called apple and in so many words, they said, "Well, that's what happens with Studio 2. Try reinstalling it."
Help! I'm on FCP studio 2.

As mentioned in other threads, virtual clusters are very tricky to setup properly and, unless you're doing a lot of H.264 encoding there's almost no benefit in doing it.
I highly suggest that you (and anyone struggling with VC's) pick up a copy of "Compressor 3 Quick Reference Guide, Brian Gary" and get a solid understanding of the environment VC's create - and what they're really good for.

  • Export Using Compressor, from FCP, and Virtual Clustering

Has anyone successfully used Virtual Clustering - that is, setting up shared services for multiple instances so that you can use all 4 or 8 cores on a machine - when exporting timelines directly from FCP to Compressor 3?
I know in theory it doesn't seem like it could work (with FCP send frame-by-frame rather slowly and Compressor needing frames much faster) but Compressor 3's manual (pages 119-120) says that it should work.
I believe I'm following the instructions correctly, but it always fails...

    Closin' out.

  • Are Compressor 3 and FCP2 Fundamentally broken for use of Qmaster Clusters?

Has anybody gotten FCP2 and Compressor 3 to submit jobs to a Qmaster cluster and actually produce output.
I have been trying for days - have read the threads here and in the Compressor section and so far cannot get it to work.
Jobs are automatically canceled on submission and FCP2 then hangs and has to be forced to quit.
Qmaster and compressor services stall and become red in Activity Monitor.
I have reset services and restarted backround service (in compressor) and even done a full os and fcp2 re-install.
I have tried QuickClusters and full managed controller/service clusters. I have tried a single machine cluster and multi-machine clusters. All no-go.
I can make it all work if I submit to "this comnputer" but never to a qmaster cluster.
    Anybody had better results?

  • Quick Clusters not working in Compressor 4.0.5

OK. One day Compressor is working with a quick cluster set up and today it's not.  All the settings are correct in QMaster and everything seems to be the same BUT Compressor 4.0.5 is not recognizing any cluster set up.  Is anyone else experiencing this?  Is it a 10.8.2 issue?  All input is welcomed.
    Then
    Strange?

The Require these Services box should be unchecked, but I doubt that's your problem. Funnily enough I lost my QC last week. What worked for me was running Compressor Repair twice – quitting– each time trashing preferences – and repairing permissions in Disk Utility after each repair.
If that doesn't work, I'd reinstall (and repair permissions once again).
    Good luck.

  • Clusters with Compressor 2

    Hi,
I'm trying to get a cluster set up to render some long files with Compressor & am not having too much success. I've read some of the discussions & would just like to know if it's really possible to get set up so it actually works properly.
Thanks for any assistance and/or tips!

Well I seem to have everything set properly. Both machines have Qmaster installed & Sharing is turned on. Right now I have the "Share this computer as" QuickCluster with services checked. I've also tried with the "Services and Cluster controller" button checked but nothing seems to happen. When I drag a file into the Compressor window, select my settings and click on "Submit" nothing happens. I opened the Activity Monitor on both machines to see if there was any action, but nothing.
You mention "Once all of the nodes are sharing they should show up in the Qmaster Admin window" but where is that window? Is it the "Services" window where the Share buttons for Compressor and Rendering are checked?
Thanks for the reply - I'll keep on trying!

  • Compressor and Clusters - using Cluster Administrator Cores

So I was recently set the task of setting up our small post production studio's double NAT network and Mac Mini Server, FTP and, most importantly, render farm and compressor (farm?). So we have an iMac, 2 Mac Minis, Mac Mini Server and Mac Pro. I managed (with a great deal of trial and error) to get everything set up, I can go into compressor from any machine and submit a task, and the controller (set as the mac mini server) assigns available cores to start transcoding. However, the MMServer itself ONLY submits 1 core of its' own, and that's set to rendering, not compressor. When I look in Qadmin, all of MMServer's cores assigned to Compressor are greyed out stating "Comprssor (unmanaged)" and can't be used. It is set as Cluster Controller AND SERVICES but it doesn't do the SERVICES part.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Those extra cores/threads are just sitting there doing nothing!
EDIT - Just to clarify all the machines are set to "Services Only" except the MMServer, and also I do need both Rendering as well as Compressor.

Hey I came in to the office today and re-made the whole cluster again and now it's working. If in doubt... turn it off and on again.

  • Using clusters with compressor

Anyone know where there is a guide or video demo showing how this is done as I dont fully understand it.
I have tried but it failed.
I have a 8gb ram 8 core Mac with fcp7 and while doing a export I asked it to use clusters, gave it a name anf hit go, nbot a lot happend, can someone shed soem idiots guide to make this happen for me please,
    regs
    daz

yes indeed. thanks for this or though I have just been watching a rather good video of this on youtube.
They showed me step by step how to do it and monitro it which is goo, but 2 things here with my system...
When I monitor q master in show the eight cores set but only the top cluster core goes green light, the remianing core list below stays grey abd does not say capture status or go green, which makes me think its only using 1 core somehow.
In the batch monitor it show lots of work going on but not really faster. The processor says it going at 90% but that could one processor going all out.
Somewhere in my mac is a core monitor which I have yt to find, If in the apple q list the status wnet green and said capture rather than not I would think it would be workng correct but they donot.
    Please help,
    Daz

  • QMASTER hints 4 usual trouble (QM NOT running/CLUSTEREd nodes/Networks etc

All, I just posted this with some hints & workaround with very common issues people have on this forum and keep asking concerning the use of APPLE QMASTER with FCP, SHAKE, COMPRESSOR and MOTION. I've had many over the last 2 years and see them coming up frequently.
Perhaps these symptoms are fixed in FCS2 at MAY 2007 (now). However if not here's some ROTS that i used for FCP to compressor via QMASTER cluster for example. NO special order but might help someone get around the stuff with QMASTER V2.3, FCP V5.1.4, compressor.app V2.3
I saw the latest QMASTER UI and usage at NAB2007 and it looked a little more solid with some "EASY SETUP" stuff. I hope it has been reworked underneath.. I guess I will know soon if it has.
For most FCP/COMPRESSOR, SHAKE. MOTION and COMPRESSOR:
    • provide access from ALL nodes to ALL the source and target objects (files) on their VOLUMES. Simply MOUNT those volumes through the APPLE file system (via NFS) using +k (cmd+k) or finder/go/connect to server. OR using an SSAFS such as XSAN™ where the file systems are all shared over FC not the network. YOu will notice the CPU's going very busy for a small while. THhis is the APPLE FILE SYSTEM task,,, I guess it's doing 'spotlight stuff". This goes away after a few minutes.
    • set the COMPRESSOR preferences for "CLUSTER OPTIONS" to "Never copy source to Cluster". This means that all nodes can access your source and target objects (files) over NFS (as above). Failure to to this means LENGTHY times to COPY material back an forth, in some cases undermining the pleasure gained from initially using clustering (reduced job times)
    • DONT mix the PHYSICAL or LOGICAL networks in your local cluster. I dont know why but I could never get this to work. Physical mean stick with eother ETHERNET or FIREWIRE or your other (airport etc whic will be generally way to slow and useless), Logical measn leepin all nodes on the SAME subnet. You can do this siply by setting theis up in the system preferences/QMASTER/advanced tab under "Use Network Interfaces". In my currnet QUAd I set this to use BUILT IN ETHERNET1 and in the MPBDC's I set this to their BUILTIN ETHERNET.
    • LOGICAL NETWORKS (Subnet): simply HARDCODE an IP address on the ETHERNET (for eample) for your cluster nodes andthe service controller. FOr eample 3.1.1.x .... it will all connect fine.
    • Physical Networks: As above (1) DONT MIX firewire (IPoFW) and Ethernet(IPoE). (2) if more than extra service node USE A HUB or SWITCH. I went and bought a 10 port GbE HUB for about $HK400 (€40) and it worked fine. I was NEVER able to get a stable system of QMASTER mixing FW and ETHERNET. (3) fwiw using IP of FW caused me a LOAD of DISK errors and timouts (I/O errors) on thosse DISKs that were FW400 (al gone now) but it showed this was not stable overall
    • for the cluster controller node MAKE SURE you set the CLUSTER STORAGE (system preferences/QMASTER/shared cluster storage) for the CLUSTER CONTROLLER NODE IS ON A SHARED volume (See above). This seems essential for SHAKE to work. (if not check the Qmaster errors in the console.app [see below] ). IF you have an SSAFS like XSAN™ then just add this cluster storage on a share file path. NOte that QMASTER does not permit the cluster storage to be on a NETWORK NODE for some reason. So in short just MOUNT the volume where the SHARED CLUSTER file is maintained for the CLUSTER controller.
    • FCP - avoid EXPORT to COMPRESSOR from the TIMELINE - it never seems to work properly (see later). Instead EXPORT FROM SEQUENCE in the BROWSER - consistent results
    • FCP - "media missing " messages on EXPORT to COMPRESSOR.. seems a defect in FCP 5.1 when you EXPORT using a sequence that is NOT in the "root" or primary trry in the FCP PROJECT BROWSER. Simply if you have browser/bin A contains(Bin B (contains Bin C (contains sequence X))) this will FAIL (wont work) for "EXPORT TO COMPRESSOR" if you use EXPORT to COMPRESSOR in a FCP browser PANE that is separately OPEN. To get around this, simply OPEN/EXPOSE the triangles/trees in the BROWSER PANE for the PROJECT and select the SEQUENCE you want and "EXPORT to COMPRESSOR" from there. This has been documented in a few places in this forum I think.
    • FCP -> COMPRESSOR -> .M2V (for DVDSP3): some things here. EXPORTING from an FCP SEQUENCE with CHAPTER MARKERS to an MPEG2 .M2V encoding USING A CLUSTER causes errors in the placement of the chapter makers when it is imported to DVDSP3. In fact CONSISTENTLY, ALL the chapter markers are all PLACED AT THE END of the TRACK in DVD SP# - somewhat useless. This seems to happen ALSO when the source is an FCP reference movie, although inconsistent. A simple work around if you have the machines is TRUN OF SEGMENTING in the COMPRESSOR ENCODER inspector. let each .M2V transcode run on the same service node. FOr the jobs at hand just set up a CLUSTER and controller for each machine and then SELECT the cluster (myclusterA, hisclusterb, herclusterc) for each transcode job.. anyway for me.. the time spent resolving all this I could have TRANSCODED all this on my QUAD and it would all have ben done by sooner! (LOL)
    • CONSOLE logs: IF QMASTER fails, I would suggest your fist port of diagnosis should be /Library/Logs/Qmaster in there you will see (on the controller node) compressor.log, jobcontroller.com.apple.qmaster.cluster.admin.log, and lots of others including service controller.com.apple.qmaster.executorX.log (for each cpu/core and node) andd qmasterca.log. All these are worth a look and for me helped me solve 90% of my qmaster errors and failures.
    • MOTION 3 - fwiw.. EXPORT USING COMPRESSOR to a CLUSTER seems to fail EVERY TIME.. seems MOTION is writing stuff out to a /var/spool/qmaster
TROUBLESHOOTING QMASTER: IF QMASTER seems buggered up (hosed), then follow these steps PRIOR to restarting you machines.
go read the TROUBLE SHOOTING in the published APPLE docs for COMPRESSOR, SHAKE and "SET UP FOR DISTRIBUTED PROCESSING" and serach these forums CAREFULLY.. the answer is usually there somewhere.
    ELSE THEN,, try these steps....
You'll feel that QMASTER is in trouble when you
    • see that the QMASTER ICON at the top of the screen says 'NO SERVICES" even though that node is started and
    • that the APPLE QMASTER ADMINSTRATOR is VERY SLOW after an 'APPLY" (like minutes with SPINNING BEACHBALL) or it WONT LET YOU DELETE a cluster or you see 'undefined' nodes in your cluster (meaning that one was shut down or had a network failure)..... all this means it's going to get worse and worse. SO DONT submit any more work to QAMSTER... best count you gains and follow this list next.
    (a) in COMPRESSOR.app / RESET BACKGROUND PROCESSES (its under the COMPRESSOR name list box) see if things get kick started but you will lose all the work that has been done up to that point for COMPRESSOR.app
    b) if no OK, then on EACH node in that cluster, STOP the QMASTER (system preferences/QMASTER/setup [set 0 minutes in the prompt and OK). Then when STOPPED, RESET the shared services my licking OPTION+CLICK on the "START" button to reveal the "RESET SERVICES". Then click "START" on each node to start the services. This has the actin of REMOVING or in the case where the CLUSTER CONTROLLER node is "RESET" f terminating the cluster that's under its control. IF so Simply go to APPLE QMASTER ADMINISTRATOR and REDFINE it. Go restart you cluster.
    c) if step (b) is no help, consult the QMASTER logs in /Library/Logs/Qmaster (using the cosole.app) for any FILE MISSING or FILE not found or FILE ERROR . Look carefully for the NODENAME (the machine_name.local) where the error may have occured. Sometimes it's very chatty. Others it is not. ALso look in the BATCH MONITOR OUTPUT for errors messages. Often these are NEVER written (or I cant find them) in the /var/logs... try and resolve any issues you can see (mostly VOLUME or FILE path issues from my experience)
    (d) if still no joy then - try removing all the 'dead' cluster files from /var/tmp/qmaster , /var/sppol/qmaster and also the file directory that you specified above for the controller to share the clustering. FOR shake issues, go do the same (note also where the shake shared cluster file path is - it can be also specified in the RENDER FILEOUT nodes prompt).
    e) if all this WONT help you, its time to get the BIG hammer out. Simply, STOP all nodes of not stopped. (if status/mode is "STOPPING" then it [QMASTER] is truly buggered). DISMOUNT the network volumes you had mounted. and RESTART ALL YOUR NODES. Tis has the affect of RESTARTING all the QMASTERD tasks. YEs sure you can go in and SUDO restart them but it is dodgy at best because they never seem to terminate cleanly (Kill -9 etc) or FORCE QUIT.... is what one ends up doing and then STILL having to restart.
    f) after restart perform steps from (B) again and it will be usually (but not always) right after that
LAstly - here's some posts I have made that may help others for QMASTER 2.3 .. and not for the NEW QMASTER as at MAy 2007...
Topic "qmasterd not running" - how this happened and what we did to fix it. - http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4168064#4168064

LAstly spend some DEDICATED time to using OBJECTIVE keywords to search the FINAL CUT PRO, SHAKE, COMPRESSOR , MOTION and QMASTER forums
    hope thats helps.

    Warwick,
Thanks for joining the forum and for doing all this work and posting your results for our benefit.
As FCP2 arrives in our shop, we will try once again to make sense of it and to see if we can boost our efficiencies in rendering big projects and getting Compressor to embrace five or six idle Macs.
Nonetheless, I am still in "Major Disbelief Mode" that Apple has done so little to make this software actually useful.

  • What are the advantages of compressor and it it even necessary

what are the advantages of compressor and it it even necessary?

Necessary for some and not for others – probably a large majority – who can by with the presets avalaible in FCX.
The users who need Compressor are those who want to control the parameters of the encodes to get the best possible trade-off between file size and quality. Or those who want to do things like standards conversions, complex frame speed changes, better re-scaling capabilities, de-interlacing, re-interlacing, output formats beyond which are available in FCX, chapter markers for DVD and Blu-Ray authoring, batch conversions for multiple purposes through droplets, access to clusters for faster rendering.

  • Mencoder H.264 20 times faster than Compressor 2

I tested mencoder with compressor running with 5 G5s. the H.264 implementation of mencoder was four times faster than the 5 dual core quads clustered with compressor two and queermaster . my single computer alone with just a dual 2 ghz processor encoded a movie 20 times faster than compressor with Queerrmaster on this same machine.
compressor costs more than mencoder(free in DVision). to get compressor you have to get an expensive Pro app.
    What's wrong with this picture?

Well, I have heard this lament before with the G5s, and all I can say is that I guess Apple is slowly starting to drop support for the PowerPC generation (it was inevitable). I assume you've upgraded to 3.0.1?
As for Motion 3 (and someone correct me here if I am wrong), I believe it's slower because of the full 3D integration. Whether or not you have a lot of 3D aspects, I think it still calculates for it, causing your response and render time to decrease.
