Compressor 4 is using all my hard disk space?!

I have a Mac Pro, 3.7 Ghz Quad-Core Intel, 12 GB Memory.
Im trying to compress a video from FCP X (10.1.3), but Compressor (4.1.3) is using all of my hard disk space. The video I am trying to compress has 4 one minute HD interview segments and about 100 different photos. It's a tribute video that combines both forms of media into a presentation. The total time for the video is 11:23.
The project library itself works off an external hard drive that has 1.45 TB available. The only thing that goes locally to my hard disk are the FCP X backup folders.
I received a message saying that I needed more Virtual Memory, but am having a hard time understanding virtual memory and how to free up more of it.
Any advice?

This is the message from my last attempt.

  • How can I see what's using all my hard disk space

The other day I noticed my HD has 3GB left of memory, but my Home folder is only using 67GB. How can I figure out what is hogging all my space and get rid of it? I do use Bittorrent but I highly doubt that would account for the loss of free space.

Start with the freeware Grandperspective. The interface is a bit unusual, but it should help you figure out what's taking up all your space.
And of course make sure you're emptying the Trash.

When i import movies from my iPhoto app to my iMovie app does it make a copy (thereby using double the hard disk space) or does it link to my iPhoto app? The reason i ask is i want to archive all my videos from iPhoto/iMovie. Do i need to archive the movies in iPhoto AND iMovie? HELP!

Hi - I'm having the same problem with freeing up space on the HD. If I can't free space if I'm using any part of the clip, how can I split up the clips so that I can discard the part I won't use? This is crazy! I have only 4 GB of free space left!
Also, I've tried to transfer the project file to my external HD but I keep getting an error saying I can't transfer it. I've been told this is because I don't have enough space on the HD for the transfer. I tried a similar transfer with another computer with plenty of HD space but the same error occurred. Is there a way to break up the project file into small pieces for the transfer (I'm thinking the whole movie file is just too big)?
    Thanks for any info!

  • HT1338 My itunes keeps telling me i do not have enough access permissions to do anything. I had used all my hard drive space so i deleted some files. i deleted the downloads folder and a few others and this is when this problem occurred. Please help!

I tried changing the permissions and installing a new itunes but nothing is working!

Had the same thing happen to me a few weeks back when I switched computers and migrated.  Here's what worked on my iMac, so maybe it'll work on your iPad, too.  Go to User(your home folder)/Music.  Select/highlight your "Music" folder.  Then do Command-I ("Get Info" from the File menu), click on the padlock icon in the lower right of the new window.  Enter your user password.  Click on your username just above the now-open padlock.  Select "Read & Write" if it's on "Read Only," "Write Only," or "No Access."  Now having your user account with "Read & Write" privileges (it may have been this way already; still do this next step), click on the gear on the bottom-center of that window.  Click on "Apply to all enclosed items."  When the pop-up says "Are you sure?" (or the equivalent), say "yes."  This will grant access privileges to your user account for all the music files inside your music folder--all your iTunes stuff included).  Then you should be good to go.

  • In PSE will I use more hard-disk space by using iPhoto plus Organizer for photos?

I have PSE 10 on my MAC. I normally download my photos onto iPhoto (and a while ago, onto Bridge CS3 which came with an earlier version of PSE) but more recently have become interested in using the PSE Organizer for my photo library.  I have started to transfer/copy the photos from iPhoto but, having read various topics on organizing photos, am a little worried that by having the photos in 2/3 places on the MAC I will use much more hard-disk space.  I know that the original files for iPhoto are in the 'Library' so that I just see thumbnails on iPhoto ( I may be wrong here?), but will the photos I now have on Organizer be working off those same 'Library' originals or am I doubling up on the space required to store these photos?

For information my iPhoto is v 9.5.1 and would seem not to like .dng files so won't load them (I am using the Adobe RAW to DNG 8.3 Converter at the moment mainly because I would have to upgrade to PSE12 to get the RAW plug-in to process my Lumix G-6 RAW files, which is fairly expensive and, even then, my iPhoto would still be the same version unless I upgraded that as well!).
I can load the RAW files onto iPhoto but when I then send them to PSE or iPhoto itself for editing they seem to be automatically converted to .jpg and do not have the usual RAW editing selection palette. However, the PSE Organizer seems happy to accept the .dng files (but not the RAW files) and when sent to PSE for editing I do get the RAW type palette, so it looks like storing my .dng files in Organizer is a good idea and, therfore, I might as well store other photos there as well rather than run two different organizers - I will leave the photos in Bridge as they are.
If you are talking about photos not in iphoto, this is correct. If you use "from iPhoto" you will get automatic duplicates of the originals in a new location. If you export them manually and use from files and folders, yes, the organizer just makes a thumbnail.
This paragraph made me think!  I'm pretty sure that when I decided to transfer my photos from iPhoto into PSE Organizer I used "from iPhoto" as this seemed the easiest way.  Does this mean that I have duplicated the file size of my iPhoto library and am therefore using much more hard-disc space than if I had used "from files and folders" (getting just thumbnails)? The transfer seems to have pulled in a lot of folders! If this is the case, is there any way to go back and do it again but "from files and folders" next time?!
This is all rather complicated it would seem (or I'm making it that way!) and I really appreciate your help.

  • Something is using up all my hard drive space?

Something is using up all my hard drive space and is under 'other' on about this mac..
When I use omi disk sweeper or grand perspective they don't show anything up as using 420GB lol.. So yeah any idea how I can find these hidden files?!
    Thanks

ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Will Rebuild Index (use brspace) also release hard disk space ?

    Dear all,
I use brspace to rebuild my SAP Oracle table weekly, I just want to know :
Other than index reubuild, will brspace also release hard disk space to me because I found some times, after having index reubild, my free hard disk space increases.
    Am I correct ?

    > I use brspace to rebuild my SAP Oracle table weekly, I just want to know :
Why the heck are you doing that? Too much time?
    > Other than index reubuild, will brspace also release hard disk space to me because I found some times, after having index reubild, my free hard disk space increases.
Whatever freed space on your harddisk, it had nothing to do with the Index rebuilds!
Once allocated Oracle won't ever release space in the filesystem unless you drop or resize datafiles.
    regards,
    Lars

I'm using a macbook pro, running snow leopard. Yesterday I got around to emptying my trash for the first time in quite awhile and was surprised by how much there seemed to be in there. Immediately after a question mark symbol appeared on all my hard disk folders. If I click on these question marks I get a message saying ' the item can't be found'.

mpagan47 wrote: a question mark symbol appeared on all my hard disk folders.
Not sure where these hard disk folders are located that you are referring to?  Finder, Finder tool bar, Finder side bar, Desktop, Dock?
More then likely they are  an alias that not longer point to the orginals,  thus the question mark.
I would reboot.  Delete icons if an alias and just recreate by dragging from the source. Try right click (control) click to remove.

    Welcome to the Apple forums:
Are you referring to the TimeMachine harddrive?
If you are referring to your internal drive, you may get more information in the Leopard Install and Setup forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1219
In general you need to have at the very minimum, 10% or your HD free. Your drive may be completely full, depending on how large it is, which you don't say. The amount of freespace on an HD varies as the system swaps files on and off of it.
Be sure you have everything backed up, just in case.

  • Losing Hard Disk Space

Hi All. I'm seriously losing hard disk space on my Macbook Pro 17 and it's been doing this heavily since I installed Lion.
My laptop has a 160GB hard drive. Out of this, I can add up only 70GB of files. Add another 20GB of free disk space so that totals 90GB. What's happened to the remaining 50GB hard disk space? Are there invisible files being written that I need to look for? Please help as this is really frustrating. Even using WhatSize doesn't add up to all the hard drive space I should have.

    Naz Hussain wrote:
On mobile backups I only have 1.3MB. I use Time Machine but that goes to an external hard drive.
By default, Lion on notebook computers will also save backups to your local disk. If you have many large files that are changing, that could account for your space.
If any software is creating directories then I can't see it.
The curl and ffmpeg make me suspect that you have some torrent or peer-to-peer software. Such software would generate many large files that Time Machine's local snapshots would backup. It would also be likely to save such files in temporary directories that are hidden.

  • Missing hard disk space after sims 3 force quit

Hi, I failed to notice I had to update to the latest version of Leopard to install the game with the result that the installer got stuck repeatedly half way through and I could only force quit the installer.
The downside to this is that I did this twice and now I'm missing around 7 gigs of hard disk space....anyone know where I can find the files to delete or how I can regain that space?

DiskWarrior, as suggests nerowolfe, won't hurt for sure. It will repair damages done to files and the directory.
Maybe you could spot where the problem files are with this freeware, Disk Inventory X. You probably could identify files that are related to the game that are left on the hard drive. Did you do a Spotlight search to see if there any left?
And I'm also wondering if it wouldn't help to clean out all the caches in case there are temp files stuck in there? Download MainMenu and use it to clean out all the caches like so:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
For the system cache clean up, choose +Deep Clean+. You will need to restart after the caches have been cleared.
Report back to let us know how it goes. Good luck!

  • Use iPod as hard disk & listen to music?

Is it possible to use your iPod as a Hard Disk & be able to listen to the music on it?
Like, if you wanna save your music JUST INCASE your computer crashes ALL OF A SUDDEN, but you still want to be able to listen to music and enjoy your iPod & not just have it sitting there as an extra hard drive.
Does anybody know if it is possible to do both?
    And if so, How?
    5th Generation 30GB   Windows XP

    Wrong.
Of course you can use your ipod as a hard disk as well as using it as an iPod to play music. There is nothing wrong with this at all.
There is one downside. The content will take up twice as much space on your iPod.
You'll need to sync your content to the iPod using itunes -AND- copy it manually to another folder using the iPod as a hard disk.
So, the answer really is YES, you can use your iPod as music player, and a hard disk for all of your content as long as your library takes up less than half the total capacity of your iPod hard drive.
Additioanlly, there are ways to copy the content off your iPod even when it's not being used as a hard disk. It requires third-party software, but it's possible. Thats another topic altogether.

  • Hard Disk Space Usage

I am at a trying to figure out how to retrieve some of my hard disk space as my Powerbook G4 with an 80 GB HD is now running painfully slow.I remember reading that Apple recommends keeping 20% of your disk space free for best performance and there is no doubt that since I dropped below 20 GB of free space the performance has been noticeably worse with many many more spinning rainbow balls. The Finder shows that I have 15.97 GB available.
I have looked at the Finder and done a ⌘-I (Get Info) for each item listed.
    Desktop: 984 KB
    [My Home Folder]: 24.66 GB
    Applications: 4.41 GB
    Documents: 386.2 MB
    Movies: 3.96 GB
    Music: 13.14 GB
    Pictures: 5.04 GB
Within this I looked at Library Info: 2.14 GB and Mail info: 1.38 GB. Clearly there is a lot of overlap since Movies, Music and Pictures are all under [My Home Folder]. I have only loaded about 30% of my CDs into iTunes so as you can imagine I am concerned that if I add more I'll have no space left. It seems silly to have an iPod that has a 60 GB capacity yet my hard disk clearly does not allow for that much music (I do not have any desire to use my iPod as a calendar or address book - it is a music device) and with the system software etc I know that there is a big imbalance.
Any ideas? I've also noticed that mail has suddenly slowed down massively. I do not delete emails so that could be hoarding disk space I suppose.

I only have 512mb ram and my computer works fine although it is always better to have more. An external hard drive such as Lacie is also a great bet - I just purchased a 300 GB drive and its the biz.
I would suggest that you download whatsize from versiontracker - its free software that tell you exactly what you have on your computer in a table columned format - its brilliant and it lets you delete whatever you dont need within the software.

  • Trying to free up Hard disk space

I am trying to free up hard disk space but I cannot find what is eating up most of it 112GB are used and about and about 42 of it is alloted to music and photos. I cannot find what is eating the bulk of the rest. I can't find any other large blocks of used space when I check folders on my Hard Drive. Any Ideas.

Use Whatsize. Same can be found on VersionTracker and MacUpdate.
    *A few tips:*
    Empty the trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps. Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need. Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).
I'm old fashion. I still keep my photos in a photo album. So when people come over my house, they can actually "touch" & "feel" my photos without me running to my computer to "show my photos".
Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too. Especially, if you already have the actual CDs and/or DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything. You can even trash directly from Spotlight!
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash. Better yet, download this neat little shareware app demo called AppZapper. It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete. Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
Not everyone has the luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or a .Mac account to store their "stuff, junk, music & photos".
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer free storage space. Most if not all do now-a-days. I store all 5000+ of my music (mp3s) files & 500+ music videos in my ISP storage bin.
There are thousands if not millions of free storage facilities on the web also. Use your favorite search engine, Google &/or MacGoogle to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + click to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke. It does all the work for you. And, best of all it’s FREE.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your current printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored. Get rid of some some them. You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a FREE utility called Monolingual. Another app that apparently does all the work for you. I’ve never used it. However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).
