Compressor and FCP X Proxy Transcodes

Hi,
Simple question for someone that knows.
Can i distribute the transcoding of proxies and optimised media from FCP X onto other Macs using compressor?
I believe i can distribute actual encoding jobs, but wondering about the background encoding does in FCP X as well
many thanks
Paul

I would think so.  I did it all manually myself.  Made a folder  in Applications and moved all the FCPS apps to it.  Then installed FCPX.
The only issue I ran into was having 2 copies of Compressor the new one and the old one once I uninstalled the old compressor and re-installed the new one I was good to go.

  • Is it normal for Compressor and FCP to analyse an imported progressive H.264 movie as interlaced?file

I am worried my programs are corrupt, because FCP tells me my progressive H.264 file is interlaced (upper first) and Compressor analyses the same movie as bottom first. It should be progressive! Why are they not telling me it's progressive, and why both different to each other? Is it because theyn can't analyse a H.264 file correctly?! Please someone tell me what's going on!
    Thanks, Syd

    Hi Shane, thanks for replying.
The reason I imported the H.264 movie into FCP was to add a short logo clip to the end of it, which was requested after I had exported a self-contained movie from my timeline and already started converting in Compressor... it took 60 hours to deinterlace (set to Best) and convert to H.264 all in one Batch (using only a single target...I did everything in one target, rather than chaining). I know you can't edit in H.264, but I thought adding something to the end and then re-exporting to H.264 might work...
anyway, that's why I imported it, and then noticed that FCP analysed it as being still interlaced... So it occurred to me to check the movie Compressor had exported by importing it back into Compressor to look at what the A/V attributes tab of the inspector said... and it said there it was progressive. So now I was worried my programs were disagreeing, so I went back to square one, converted my original footage to Pro Res in Compressor, then ran that Pro Res footage through Compressor to de-interlace, then reconnected media in my FCP timeline, so that all the clips in the timeline were now progressive. Then I exported that as a self-contained movie and imported into Compressor to convert to H.264. Finally, knowing no other way to analyse the footage, and also wanting to see what FCP would make of it, I imported the movie into FCP, and found the result I put in the first post of this thread... so tried analysing in Compressor again, and found that Compressor thinks it is as I wrote in the first post above.
So now Compressor tells me the file it previously converted to progressive isn't progressive, and thinks it has a different dominant field to the one FCP thinks it has, even though the first time I ran this movie through Compressor it analysed its own result as progressive... so I feel these incompatible analyses are possibly a symptom of something wrong?
How can I analyse a H.264 file if neither FCP or Compressor can do it?

  • Motion. Compressor and FCP

Really pleased that FCP now supports 720/50p but the ProApps 2007/02 update has broken Motion, FCP and Comprossor. In Motion I can't open the Library or File Explorer. In FCP the Motion Master Templates won't let me drop clips into the drop zones, which is exactaly what I've been doing in my present project. I've tried reinstalling and, if I don't upgrade Motion it works, but if I upgrade FCP to 6.0.2 the Motion templates don't work. Compressor just doesn't open.
HELP! I'm in the middle of an edit and northing's working. Can anyone tell me what's going on?

Sort of – by exporting and reimporting as clips. There is no round-tripping. For example, you can't send a clip as a Motion project to Motion4, save and have the clip update in FCP. You'd have to export a clip (or sequence) as a self-contained movie and bring it into Motion (or Compressor), make your changes, exporty and reimport as a clip, see how you liked the result, etc. Much easiier to stay within FCS.

  • Compressor and FCP

I had been on this forum about audio sync problems when using compressor 1.2.1
    Could anyone tell me if
    1) these sync problems have been solved with compressor 2.0
    2) the new version of compressor is working with FCPproHD 4.5
    Thanks in advance

    Hi JIm,
    Seriously now,
    I see you are using a G5.
I am using a G4 and Simon in this thread quotes that he could not launch compressor 2 on his G4.
I am worried because I am ready to buy compressor 2 but would like ot make sure it will be useable on my G4.
Do you know someone using compressor 2 with a G4 ? or where should I inquire ?
    Thanks in advance

  • Aren't FCPX and Compressor supposed to be able to export Apple ProRes 422 LT?  I just bought FCPX and Compressor and there seems to be no way to transcode HDV clips to Apple ProRes422 LT.  Before buying I read LACUG tutorial by R Taylor that says it can.

Tom is right. Codecs are shared software system-wide ("Core Video"). If you cannot find the option with any software (such as MPEG Streamclip), you won't find it in Compressor or FCPX either. The Quicktime ProRes codecs is part of the FCP menu > "Download Additional Content" you need to make after install FCPX (or Compressor.) These "pro video" codecs are part of all "ProApp" licenses for video related software from Apple (QT7Pro, Motion, Compressor, Final Cut, etc....) [you can also download them here: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1396]
Most articles/tutorials you read by "long time" users are apt to assume the reader has been working with pro-video on Macs since the days of disk installs (like they have). In those days, the installation of those codecs wasn't even really an option (well, it was if you did a custom install - but who *didn't* install all available codecs??), it was automatically installed with the main software. Since the "App Store" venue... things have changed somewhat.

  • Trying to get my fcp project to burn to dvd at the highest quality? Ive used compressor and then tried to put it in dvdsp put its not working. I am having problems with the audio or when i burn it , i cant play the dvd? any help would be appreciated

I suspect you are attempting to burn an HD DVD, which will not play on a DVD player...
But if you provide more details such as the settings you are applying in Compressor, then we would be able to provide you more accurate information.
How are you adding the files to Compressor?
In FCP, what are your footage properties (command-9) and sequence settings (command-0)

  • Can you export a project to Compressor and keep editing in FCP???

    Hello my mac guru-ness,
I have a query, if I edit in FCP and export out to Compressor or Quicktime conversion, I am locked out from continuing to edit in FCP. Is there a way around this???
I need to edit 4 x 5 minute video's and need to export the 1st video to Mpeg2 and FLV via Compressor and Quicktime Conversion and then continue to keep editing the next video while the first one is still converting. How can I do this???
If I had 2 mac pros networked together, could I get the 2nd mac pro to convert the 1st video while I continue to edit the remaining 3 video's???
Would Final cut server help me in this scenario also?
Your assistance would be gratefully appreciated.
    kris

To build on g's answer ... when exporting to Compressor from FCP, you will not be able to use FCP until the export is completed.
If your Macs are networked together, you can do a couple of things.
    1. Export your sequence as a Quicktime file, then transfer it to your other Mac Pro, then have that Mac Pro encode.
    2. I would recommend setting up your Mac Pro's as a little QCluster. Since the MP's have multiple cores, you can create multiple "instances" in QMaster Preferences. Instances are QMaster's way of dividing your multiple cores to spread the encoding across all cores. I generally create half the number of instances from the total number of cores available. For example, with an 8 Core MP, I would use 4 instances.
Read this article for further information on how to set up a QCluster: http://visionstudios.ca/RenderFarm/RenderFarmleft.html
On your MP that you will be editing on, you can then disable a couple of instances so that you wouldn't see as big of a performance hit while encoding and editing simultaneously. You use the Apple Qadministrator app to configure a cluster like this.

  • I still distribute most FCP projects via DVD. No matter which MPEG2 setting I use in Compressor 4 I get an error - even Apple's default DVD setting. Has anybody successfully output an FCP X project to compressor and then out on a DVD?

Anthony, thank you very much - this works, though I thought I had tried your process previously without success. I've tried so many things who knows. I've had zero luck going with the Send to Compressor or Export Using Compressor Settings under the Share menu. I'm also finding Compressor 4 to be a real dog on my system even though I have a brand new quad core machine with 8G of RAM. Prior to receiving your post I did come up with a different work process. Using Export Movie from FCP X and then loading the result in Compressor 3 works flawlessly. Thanks again!

Do you have any filters applied to your clips?
This happened to me before, I accidently had applied a broadcast safe filter to a color matte that was black....
I figured it out by duplicating my sequence and deleting items from my timeline 1 by 1 until I was able to export a reference movie.
Anywho, export again, this time with "self contained" movie selected.
Then try to import to Compressor.

  • Compressor 2 and FCP 4.5 "background process" error

So I switched to my laptop which is running 10.4.11 and Compressor 2. I get "Cannot submit batch" Unable to connect to background process. I don't know if I should try the same proposed solutions that are suggested for the newer versions of the software? Any other suggestions?

    VAR,
    1. When you can spare another 5 min to solve your problem, instead of coming here and complaining about no one helped you (though Tom did offer a very direct response) you might take the time to read your DVDSP manual.
In it, you will discover that DVDSP is totally capable of converting quicktime movies to m2v and aif files. You have full control over all aspects of bitrate etc. Indeed, it is the same engine as in compressor. If you need an AC3 file, use A-Pack on the aif DVDSP will create.
    2. When you say compressor does not work, do you mean -A. it does not launch from within FCP or B. you can not launch it independently?
If it will launch independantly. export a reference QT file, open Compressor and have at it.
QT7 is a problematic issue with FCP4.5. The long term solution is to upgrade to FCP5 to go with 10.4 and QT7. They all fit together much more neatly.

  • Compressor and IDVD imports, etc.

Hi Again, just the dumb newbie. But I've been READING the manual(s) and at least the help/manual on Compressor...because I did something that did not seem to work, went back and tried to fix it. A couple of things happened:
I imported a little 15 minute promo I made on Applied Magic Screenplay, via copy from a DVD. I jazzed up the intro and menu and burned an iDVD. Fine. Now I have to change a "tinny" audio portion, and decided to import it into FCP.
BAM went right in...but when I tried to look at it in the timeline, it said (undrendered file) SO...I started to render "all". It said it would take about an HOUR to do this.
SO I read the MANUAL. It says that I was (possibly, I haven't a clue) rendering uncompressed media, and that it KILLS disc space. So I READ THE HELP on compressor. WHich says it transcodes multiple format media files (of all types) for use in FCP. SO I cranked up compressor, added the same file and preset the encoding for MPEG-2DVD. ( Figureing MPEG 4 wold take longer). It took over an hour to transcode this.
SO re-opened FCP, and imported the file. It took several minutes to load it (saw the painted wheel forever), and then when I went to drop it into the timeline...>FCP unexpectedly QUIT.
I re-opened, and of course the file was not there (not saved in FCP)/ HOWEVER, when I went to look at that original iDVD thing I made...a ".mov" file, NOW I can see it and work with it in the timeline?
What did I do wrong here? Or better yet...how the **** did I fix that without rendering it as the program requested? THE MANUAL did say that FCP supports any file created on my computer, So I was shocked about having to render at all.
Any insight to this (for my learning purpose mostly) would be greatly appreciated!!! Cap'n? Input PLEAZZZ.
    Thanks again
    MW

Thanks for the encouraging words. With that...to continue.
SO...this morning, I strectched, woke up and opened the project and the "Saved all" files I supposedly saved...were not there. The original .mov was.
SO, the manuals (for compressor) do give detailed descriptions of what the different compression titles are used for. And as I was planning on making DVD's that play continuously in our theater, I thought that compress to MPEG2 was best.
SO, I agian went and imported the compressed file into FCP and BANG, quit. Just too much for it to handle? As I am importing this file, I don't understand the purpose of export settings (yet), or why FCP is shutting down when the manuals BRAG that FCP will fluidly with compressor files. I'm just baffled, that's all.
I guess it was "iMovie" that I made the movie in..."iDVD" that I authored the DVD in.
So was I correct in assuming that FCP wants me to render this imovie (.mov) as an uncompressed file? Regarding compressor, There are so many choices, granted, they are well explained in the manual, but I just don't know which one to use in compressor to make this silly 15minute promo DVD.
Again, your patience and knowledge/experience are all greatly appreciated!
Just a bit about me: I bought an Appl ied Mag ic screenplay about 4 years ago because i was starting a business and wanted a video done. After getting prices, I figured I could by cameras, booms, support equipment an expensive hooker AND a stand alone NLE for the price....and did just that (sans hooker).
SO i've been spoiled by a very easy system (applied Mag) but found as I do more with it, that it really is limited as to what I want it can do (like high quaility audio adjustment, better color correction, critical splices/sync, etc.). That's why I bought the G5 and am trying out AXDV and FCP4.5.
I really enjoy editing, feel that for someone who is self taught I've done some pretty fun stuff, and look forward to learning more! Again, you guys are great and I for one am thankful for your help.

  • Logic Pro 9 Compressor and Soundtrack Pro

    Hi,
I have recently installed Mackeeper in my iMac. After everything I opened Logic Pro and it couldn't open. So I thought it could be an issue from Mackeeper, I requested a help from them and they asked me to send my report and I sent to them. Later on I was recommended to uninstall the logic pro, so when I reinstalled the logic pro the following components Compressor and Soundtrack Pro were deselected, it was in gray and I couldn't find out how to install it. The other issue is that the installation was successfully completed without installing the Logic Studio Audio Contents 1,2,3 and Demo Content was also not  installed
Is there anything wrong I did?
    Help Please!
    Many thanks in advance

Interesting; and who would have thought ! What does Logic and FCP have to do with each other being installed. I have FCP running (w./ all) and Logic Pro 9 and perhaps your Logic Studio 2 is not the same. I have no idea.
I'm hoping that I can export the LPro files into FCP ez along with exporting them to WAV or formats that a PC can use; if anyone has heard of problems with that. ?

  • Help with cs3 and fcp -from cs2 and fcp thread..

didnt want to hijack the thread about cs2 and fcp so started a new one
hi, I'm using a proRes 422 file (  mov ) 1920x1080p 23.98fps 16:9. Loads and plays fine in CS3 (custom  desktop settings)...but wouldn't mind knowing your project settings for  your trial shooternz...so I can compare...
My file is dark and a little  flat...so I used levels effect adjustments.  However, though it looks  way better and exports OK ( hdtv 1920x1080p 24fps) I do see some "noise"  now if I freeze the frame...is that common or am I over doing it on the  gamma and levels correction ?
I'm just doing hd for the first time really  on this machine, trying to figure out what I need in future for machine  and upgrade to CS5...so I am going to dissect this file and figure this  out til the cows come home so I don't have to deal with problems in  future with new machine, etc.
Another thing...I have media info on this saying  mpeg-4 ( mov wrapper) video = apcn ..audio = ipcm..
    audio  1,536kbps, 1 hz, 16bits, 3 channels, ipcm..
However, there is no  sound on the track which loads into audio 4 when video goes on video 1.   This was shot with a boom - as I can see a boom shadow in shot during "  back to 1 "  on the set (when dolly moves back to 1 etc) .... ( sound  mixer) so it's possible there is in fact NO SOUND embedded in the video  file.  Is that common to have a soundtrack appear even if it is empty  with proRes ?
    thanks...Rod

Wow, not too popular a subject ...this....
Got an update from the man who sent me the prores file...and a little info re: his opinion of adobe coming from FCP...I will share it with you all...
If you are going the Adobe route, I would highly recommend that because Premiere  CS5 is a really impressive app when it comes to working with footage and  editing.  I have recently moved over to the Adobe CS5 Suite because Final Cut is  good, but it hasn't been updated in a while....and the Mac is a really expensive  alternative to a really good PC.
The color space for the clip I sent over  was set for Rec709 HD Colorspace which is meant for broadcast, but on a non  calibrated monitor, it will look dark.  It usually requires a gamma shift and  color treatment (since the clip is uncorrected), but it sounds like you are on  your way.
Given the RED work flow, we always shoot raw and make the  adjustments prior to rendering.  The main reason we use the Adobe Suite is  because you can work natively with any footage in the digital work flow.....FCP  requires you to transcode everything into a Pro-Res Quicktime and you lose all  of the really granular ability to treat the footage in order to get through the  edit and color grade.
sooo, new computer will have a broadcast monitor ( just in case one is needed )...
I adjusted my clip by eye, plus vectorgraph etc, (levels and gamma) and it turned out fine...

  • Upgraded to 10.5 and FCP thinks that its running on a different computer

I've had FCP for about 5 years now, no problems. I recently upgraded to OS10.5 FCP worked fine until I tried to go to compressor and compressor would not work (different forum, I know) anyway I got compressor working again by re-installing just compressor. Now FCP won't open b/c it thinks that there is anouther application with identical serial #'s already running on my network. I have 1 other Mac and its running Final cut express. Even with the other mac off it still gives me the message. Please help.

You might consider removing all FCP(S) components and do a fresh install of the application. Have your serial numbers ready and I hope you are not in the middle of a project.

  • Compressor from FCP very very slow

Why is it that encoding (for DVD) a sequence from FCP using compressor takes so long.
9 hours for 1 hour video through FCP
Going through compressor directly takes 15 min.

I don't understand the workaround though. Why export from FCP and then again from Compressor. If we're going that route why not just export directly from FCP, uninstall Compressor, and trash the user manual??
