Compressor causing renders to disappear

Mac Pro, FCP 5.1.4, DV sequence with primarily native media, plus a few HD 720 24p clips added, media on external FW 800 drive.
Every time I send my sequence to compressor, FCP comes up with a message saying my render files have gone missing, and sure enough, all rendered material goes away. I am able to setup my batch and encode, but every time I click on something in compressor, I must return to FCP to ok the missing renders dialog.
Even this is not too big a deal, however, the real inconvenience is that each time a new batch item begins, I must cliick ok on this box again for Compressor to continue. Since I am encoding a long piece to 2 mpeg2 files of different bit rates, an audio file, and an h.264 clip for the web, this means I must babysit this job very late into the night, waiting around just to click ok every couple hours.
Anyone seen this? maybe it has something to do with the external drive - I don't remember encountering this before... Spotlight?

1. Did you do an import from that drive? There's an option in import to disconnect the drive after the import. It's useful importing the card from you camera, but it might just disconnect an internal drive too if selected.
2. To get the drive back without a reboot, try this: Start, All Programs, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management. Just opening Disk Management may bring it back. If not, right mouse button on Disk Management, Rescan Disks.

Settings> Mail, Contacts, Calendars> in Calendar section change the Sync setting.

Rendering Results Disappear

I need help. This is what usually happens:
I render a project (on default scratch discs). After it's finally done, when I click on anywhere in the timeline, all the rendering results disappear at once, and I get the dreadful red lines again, as if nothing has ever happen... the way I have been dealing with this is that I save the project as soon as it's rendered, without "touching the timeline", then I close the project and reopen it. But that can't be the solution... Also, when I close FCP, and re-open the program, it tells me that some FIN files are offline/missing, and most of the time the project appears with those *&$# red lines again.
I am at a loss. Does anyone else have these problems?

I have all my files on the Mac HD which is formatted MacOSextended (journaled). I don't have diskwarrior, but I ran the disc utility and also AppleJack twice. Still the same problem...
FCP 6.0.3
Sequence setting: DV NTSC 48kHz, 720x480, 29.97
The source footage format: .mov, DV 720x480, cinematized from original NTSC DVD
Why rendering: For some reason, when I import the mov and put it in sequence, it always tells me that "the clip does not match the sequence's setting or any other sequenze presets", so I say ok to match sequence settings to clip settings, and that's when all the rendering has to be done in order to watch immediate results.
Scratch disc is on my HD; user/documents/Final Cut Pro Documents/
Source footage is also on my HD; desktop/user/clips

If you have a backup of your iPhone on either iCloud or iTunes from the time when those photos were on the Camera Roll, you can restore from that backup and recover those photos. Please use the following article for information on restoring from backups.

Toggling 3D or Continuously Rasterize switches causes comps to disappear forever?

hi all
this has happened to me a few times and it's driving me crazy:
if I toggle on/off the 3D or Continuously Rasterize switches, at times it will make the comp disappear, and reverting the switches to their exact previous state(s) does not bring the comp back. Any ideas on what causes this behaviour?

yes, I believe so;
I think I figured it out though, at least partially---when toggling, for some reason, the comp's position gets reset to the origin (0,0,0) and that is why it was disappearing;
really strange still, I wonder why that would happen

Setting width on a sprite causes things to disappear?

I'm a little confused as to what is going on when I set the
width of a sprite manually.
In the attached code, nothing shows up.
If I comment out the "width = 300" line, the circle shows up
as expected.
I'm not sure why manually setting the width of the sprite
causes its child to disappear.
Any ideas?

setting the width or height of a display object before
anything is attached to it causes the sprite to silently fail. When
you add a child to a sprite, the height and width are automatically
generated, so there really isnt much need to set height and width
before you add children. after you add the children you can set
height and width to resize the sprite as you see fit.

Stacking Shapes Causes Text to Disappear

I have 2 rectangle shapes that are .25 in height. Each has text that is a single word in a 9 pt font. When I stack the shapes the text in the top shape does not display. I have tried changing the inset margin but that did nothing. Is this a bug?

Click on both objects to select them. Click on the Wrap inspector, then uncheck Object Causes Wrap. Problem disappears.

External Hard Disk disconnected while rendering, project disappeared now with a yellow exclamation sign triangle. Is there a way to recover it?

I was working on a project located at a library in an external hard disk. The external hard disk was disconnected while FCPX was rendering. Once it was connected back there's no project in the event, I can't find it in Finder nor anywhere else and I get a yellow triangular exclamation sign icon. Has the project disappeared? Is there a way to find it? I have no backup
Recovering this is quite important for me.
I'd greatly appreciate any help or tips.

Can I use FCPx while Compressor is rendering?

I am in the middle of a long render using Compressor 4.0.4... but would ideally like to get on with editing our next program.
Should I be able to continue working with FCPx while rendering?

Yes. You can go ahead and work. responsiveness may or may not be quite as snappy as you're used to, but it should be fine.

Use ubuntu with FCP/Compressor for rendering

Hi,
I'm doing some research on video rendering farms. Right now I have Final Cut Express on a Mac Mini. It's good for what I do now (which isn't much), but I'm thinking of expanding my home office network to include another server running Ubuntu for various services (I'm primary a software/web developer). I was hoping I can use it to help render videos because let's face it, rendering on a Mac Mini takes forever.
I've read up a bit on Compressor and Qmaster, and getting a bit confused. I haven't found much on Compressor, but it seems that Qmaster can use unix based systems. So I'm wondering if that means I can use Ubuntu and what I would need to install on Ubuntu to handle any of this. Any ideas? Is there other solutions that I did not see?
This is mostly a hobby, so I don't really have a huge budget and I'm happy using Final Cut Express for now.

Firefox on Windows 8.1 is over magnified causing rendering issues?

Left in 100% view state pages are rendered far to big with text overlarge and photographs beginning to blur through pixellation. When compared to Google Chrome and IE on 100% there is a vast difference between these 2 and Firefox. To correct this issue I have to put the Firefox display to 80% view to get the same effect as I would on Chrome and IE on 100%. Surely this is not was intended has there been some mistake? I am using Windows 8.1 as platform
This issue although correctable is still a bit annoying having to constantly alter display just so that Firefox has roughly the same look as Chrome and IE. It is annoying because I am a website developer myself so would expect some consistency when developing sites for Chrome and Firefox etc.

thanks for the reply but it is only partially helpful. I followed some instructions in the about:config and found layout cssdevpixels to be -1 valua which I changed. improved some of the text appearance improved but the zoom is still over 100% as compared with other browsers.Going down a route to get add- ons to default the zoom seems a bit too much work really. However what concerns me more is that most users would expect to download Firefox in a useable state or would just use what they got on the download and hence not look to improve or customize what they recieved as a download. Taking your advice is not for the faint hearted as most would fear messing around with settings like these in this way. Therefore people looking a web pages on Firefox may get the wrong impression of a website thinking photos are blurred because of a fault by the website designer or photographer and not looking at the root cause which is actually poor rendering at 100% view on the browser. I only knew because i made the sites that I was viewing so i knew something was amiss. This could put potential customers off what they are seeing especially when its on sites that rely on the quality of the images on the page. This is why i am questioning if this is actually a design fault and not a customization issue. People usingFfirefox are not necessarily going to realize they need to change the zoom to see the website page correctly nor are they going to seek complicated solutions to customize the browser to display correctly. As a web designer it is not possible to put in a set of different photographs to display according to which browser is being used to view the webpage so this is why it is necessary to have everything as standardized as possible this is why i am so concerned about this issue which I seem to be getting with Firefox current version. Really there should not be this variation between different browsers.

Images with Transparency Cause Rendering Bug in Acrobat

Try this at home: Export a file containing an image with transparency to PDF and open it in Acrobat (any platform, any recent version): the page containing the image will have all text rendered in what looks like bold or faux bold, depending on the font. The document looks fine in Preview and printed (even from Acrobat).
Can anyone else reproduce this? I get this behavior consistently.

Hi bdepaepe, I've had a look and I believe I have experienced the error you mean and solved it.
The reason this occurs some of the time, but not always is because the source code is not the same each time, as the adverts change every refresh. The error only happens when two of the < div> tags of class 'banneritem' which are on top of each other have a height of 84px each as opposed to 80px (although even if this is the case the rendering issue doesn't always happen).
The reason that some of the 'banneritem' < div> tags have a height of 84px is because inside them there is an <a> tag which contains an < img> tag, and the <a> tag has not been set to 'display: block;'. <a> tags are inline elements by default, so shouldn't be used to hold block level elements such as images unless the styles for the <a> tag include 'display: block;'.

Sqldeveloper causes display to disappear

I downloaded and installed the large kit (for systems without Java SDK release 1.5). I doubleclick on sqldeveloper.exe, and everything on my display disappears except my mouse pointer. And when I say everything, I mean the screen goes black - no desktop, no exception/core dump message, just the mouse pointer. And I can still move the pointer around. I've waited for several minutes, and nothing else happens. It seems my only option at this point is to hit the power button, whereupon WinXP does a graceful shutdown.

Section 1.2.2 says I need Sun Java J2SE JDK 5.0 (Update 5 or later). I installed that, but it doesn't help.

Update your display driver. You can also try updating to java 1.6, although that is a long shot. If neither of those work, try googling your display driver and java as there may be a solution on the web for the issue.

Rendering Subtitles (with Kona 3) causes Rendered sections to lose Contrast

Hello,
I'm adding Subtitles to an HD clip that I have in an "AJA Kona3 1080psf 24 10 Bit RGB" sequence preset.
I find that when I add a Subtitle, FCP asks to Render, but when I do so, I find that the Rendered Portions show a loss of Contrast.
Any idea how to get around this?
I have a Quad Mac running FCP 5.0.1 and Kona 3 installed.

Backup caused contacts to disappear. Why can I not get them back?

I was asked for my apple password to complete a backup. After I entered the password my contacts disappearred and I am unable to get them back on my iPhone from either the Verizon website or from the Apple iCloud site. How can I get them back without having to reenter them from scratch.

If you generate a new sync key then all data stored on the Sync server is reset, so you can't retrieve it anymore.
The sync key is used locally to encrypt your data before sending it to the sync server, so you should always backup this key to a safe location.
