Compressor causing serious pixelation

Hi,
I've been using the same set up of FCP/Compressor/DVDSP for years with no real problem.
When I finish a timeline, I export the entire timeline as a Quicktime movie, import it back and then use compressor to prep it for DVDSP. I do this because I am more comfortable compressing a flattened movie (as opposed to a time line with a million edits) and I believe it make the Compression goes quicker. I always keep my movies less than 90 minutes and use Compressors - DVD Best Quality 90 Min setting.
All of a sudden out of the blue, after creating a DVD (using DVDSP) about half way through my latest movie, there is about 30 seconds of crazy pixelation. It looks as if every 3 seconds, the image loses and then regains focus.
I've spent two entire days trouble shooting with no luck.
• It's not the specific footage because when I swap the problem footage with new footage, the new segment is affected.
• The movie that is created by FCP has no hint of the pixelation whatsoever - it looks perfect.
• It's not the burner, because when I view the movie directly from the disc image created by DVDSP, the pixelation problem is there.
• Trashing FCP Prefs did nothing
I'm using:
•MacPro 2 X 3 Dual Core
•11GB RAM
• FCP 6.0.6 - the problem started on 6.0.5 and I was hoping that it would be fixec if I updated to 6.0.6, but did not
• Compressor 3.0.5
• DVD SP 4.2.1

I had a similar issue a while back that had something to do with the long GOP used in the video files.
I followed the suggestions here and it fixed my issue:
"Since it seemed to be pulsing at the same rate as the I-frame occurs in MPEG, I decided it had something to do with MPEG stream. Basically, in a dark scene there was more noise in the video than in a scene well lit. That noise translates into more pixel changes between frames and more data generated by Compressor in each MPEG group of pictures. So I just reduced the average bit rate from the 6.8 Mbps that I had to 6.5 Mbps, and the maximum bit rate from 8.0 Mbps to 7.7 Mbps, which permanently fixed the problem. Depending upon your particular situation, you may want to set them even lower as I've seen recommendations as low as 5.5Mbps average/7.2Mbps maximum."
I also found this if the above doesn't work:

  • Images in Finder/Coverflow SERIOUSLY pixelated

Has anyone had issues with coverflow in Finder seriously pixelating images?
I'm having it in random folders (but not all) and I cannot find any rhyme or reason for it.
Is Leopard generating previews and just not done yet maybe?
Here's an example of what I'm seeing:
    http://www.allenrockwellphoto.com/images/pixelated.jpg
As I said, some folders show images sharp and clear, others show them this way ... there seems to be no logic to it.

I have the same problem with images on the internal disk, although they were copied there from a external after my erase and install. Raw files look fine and so do smaller jpegs. I also see the issue with psd files but not pngs.
I think this has to do with the new higher resolution leopard icons. This is what I think is happening.
Those jpegs were saved on a tiger system. When the file was written there was a icon thumbnail generated at a 128x128 pixels. This was the largest size supported by OS X up until leopard. New leopard icons can be up to 512x512 pixes, W00t!
So as a result your icon preview stored with the file is 128x128 but is being scaled to whatever size your cover flow window is sized to. Hence, causing pixelization (sp?).
To test this I opened one of the problem images in preview, did a "save as" to a new file and voila! beautiful coverflow icons. However, my photoshop CS3 is still unaware that it should be writing higher rez thumbnails. Perhaps I should run adobe updater...
I'm looking for a command line or apple script way to update these thumbnails without changing the modified or created dates so the process can be scripted.
Ideally you should point the script to a directory, find all image files with less than 512x512 icons, regenerate the thumbnail and preserve any modified or created dates.
The sips command line tool doesn't seem to do the trick. Any ideas?

  • Recent windows 7 updates caused serious conflicts??

I have two NI PCIe-1433 boards and the NI Max v5.4 installed. Recent win 7 (64 bit) automatic updates, within the last 10 days seemed to cause serious problems. Win 7 couldn't boot any more. Sometimes computer turns on and off by itself before the windows logo shows up. Sometimes it crashes before I can login.
I did a fresh reinstallation of win 7. The same problem happened after some automatic updates. I can boot and use windows 7 if I unplug both NI cards. This makes me think the problem is in NI driver/card. I'm reporting it here to see if anybody experiences similar things.
Earlier this year Win 7 automatic updates caused a problem with my Canon printer/scanner. Canon supplied scan software still does not work today.

    Hi Jeremy
Thank you for responding. I do not know which update. I know it's due to some update(s) that happened recently.
After I reinstalled the fresh Windows 7 (64 bit), I installed NI IMAQ software. I was able to use both boards to acquire images at that point. However Windows 7 kept updating itself. Later the same problem happened again.
After unplugging both boards, I have been using the computer for 2 days without a problem. My computer's power supply is 650W. Does the boards require a lot of power?

  • Testing iMac in store I checked iPhoto editing. Photo said to be 42Mb but zooming caused immediate pixellation, so clearly was not displaying a 42Mb file. When I zoom in PS on PC a large file retains detail for a lot of zooming. Whats going on?

While testing a MacBook pro in the Apple Store, I checked iPhoto. Looking at what was said to be  42Mb file I noticed that zooming caused immediate pixellation, so clearly a 42Mb RAW file was not what I was looking at. In my PS Elements on my PC when I zoom, the photo remains unpixellated until quite a lot of zoom is used (marked as 100%). This depends on the file size of the photo of course. Maybe the displayed photo in iPhoto is a low res. jpeg. This is not too good for me. I wanted to see how the base model of MacBook would handle photos esp large files and I need to zoom in. Will the base model cope with this in PSE for Mac?

iPhoto will happily zoom to 300%. The quality at that magnification will depend on the quality of the image.  But if it's a sharp image - of any size - it will zoom to 300% with no problems.
PSE for Mac has nothing to do with iPhoto. I have used it with no problems, but for best information why not ask over at the Adobe forums?

  • The latest update for Keynote has caused serious functionality issues. Images are now no longer positionable by pixel/point (i.e., trying to type in a 0 position will be defaulted by the program to either -1 or 1), but the errors are consistent by object.

The error is not even consistent by page (i.e., the same object pasted to a new slide will default to a different positioning track. Plus animations are having problem with groups. Help!!!!

  • Exporting an already-rendered Sequence causes serious error.

Several times, I have tried clicking File->Export->Media, and suddenly adobe premiere pro would tell me that a serious error has occurred and then the program closes. This was during a 1280 x 1024 square pixel resolution video. I have not tested any other resolution. This error would occur if I had rendered my media and then clicked File-Export->Media. If I delete the render files and then click File->Export->Media, the adobe media encoder runs fine and no problems are seen.
I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit
    Thank you for your help!

On your timeline you should see a colored strip on the top of your sequence. If its red you have to render. If its green then you are using a dynamic preview that allows you to watch things at real time.
To be sure everything is rendered click on:
    Sequence>Render All
Then make a CHECK next to all the selections. Click back on your sequence and press option+R. This will render everthing in your sequence bypassing realtime effects and should allow you to export your file.

  • OPBHOBrokerDsktop.exe is causing serious performance problems on my new Windows 8.1 PC.

Browsing websites with Process Monitor running,  there are millions of instances of this executable running in the background.  It apparently causes websites being browsed to go into a "not resplonding" state.  I use Webroot for security, and the computer is new - purchased about 3 weeks ago - HP Slimline.
The .EXE is installed as part of HP's "Simple Pass" which was apparently installed on my system when I downloaded a driver for my HP Officejet Pro 8500 printer/copier/scanner/fax.
It's supposed to be an identity protection software.  Does this program actually work?  I want to uninstall it because the performance impact is just ridiculous.
Thanks for any advice or suggestions you can provide.

I'm having the same issue with my new HP Envy 8.1 . I had to send it in at least 2 times for factory repairs. OPBHOBrokerDsktop.exe  shows up as a warning in the reliabilty monitor now. Maybe that's what made my monitor and motherboard go out before.  It has always showed the "simple pass broker" or -"OPBHOBrokerDsktop.exe"-  as a warning . I thought it was that I just didn't scan my finger over the sensor right. When you hit the the link to find a solution about the warning. It says no solution found. Also it doesn't start automatic maintenance on schedule. Here just a few days ago in the start up screen it asked if  I would like to use a PIN number to log in instead of "SimplePass". But it didn't say why.  Now I'm beginning to understand why.  They won't admit there is a problem either. I had a remote session today because the automatic maintenance scanner ran for 11 hours and never completed. All they told me to do was to do a factory recovery back to factory defaults, and to save all my info. They must know by now that there is a problem . Why can't they find a fix instead of just resetting to factory defaults. This will make twice now I've had to reset my computer.  A $ 1000.00 computer that has so many problems "brand new !? I bought it new custom built in "China". But the "Recovery Manager is a black control panel, meaning it was manufactured before 2013. A white Recovery Manager page means it is 2014 or newer. I bought mine new custom built in June 2104, and it shows it was manufactured before 2013 . So I have a old windows 8 computer that was updated to 8.1 . They sold me as a NEW computer. That could be why I'm having so many problems with mine.

  • JSP causes serious performance problem in my EP

I have a native JSP application and running it on the EP. This application accessing a Oracle db (using oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver driver).
When this db not running, my EP doesn't open any page. The EP try to connect with this db, but not get success.
I modify this application with TRY and CATCH to treat the application problem, but the EP problem continues.
In the EP Thread Overview (System Adm -> Monitoring -> Portal -> Thread Overview), I see threads (locked) about this application. To unlock this threads, I delete the par file from the Portal and re-deploy it.
When this threads is deleted, the application treat the problem (display a error message in the iView container) and EP work normally.
    My questions:
    1) Exists some way that the problem with this application does not cause performance problems with the EP (via code or property)?
    2) Exists some property in the Config Tool where I configure the connection timeout for access the external DB?
    3) Exists some way to liberate these (locked) threads of the EP (I see the page Clearing the Portal Runtime Cache - http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/d2/a216e1bd7b431c82fa5ff105187112/frameset.htm - but I don't know if I can use it for this)
    I use EP 6.0 SP 15.

  • Editing titles or clicking on clips causes serious error

Problem with new mac mini (purchased two days ago), no problem on iMac (with
same software install, checked with system profiler). Tried with two mac minis
(replaced the just purchased one with a replacement after a discussion with a genius)
    Mac OS X : 10.5.7
    iMovie 09' : 8.0.2 (741)
Editing titles/text, changing titles/back ground lengths causes. Could be associated with generally clicking on clips (possibly double clicking)
    1) Loss of control of inspector window
    2) Inability to share the video (the options are greyed out)
    3) Inability to return to the project selection window
    4) Inability to add more titles/backgrounds
    5) Inspector seems trapped in a strange state, unable to close
iMovie reports the following messages via console(as example)
    18/05/2009 16:23:11 iMovie[325] NSMutableRLEArray objectAtIndex:effectiveRange:: Out of bounds
    this error repeats many times.
    Anyone please help!

Since this is a new rig, I'm assuming this is a PPro CS6 installation you're referring to?

  • Photo export quirk is causing serious grief!

I have a ton of wedding photos that are arranged chronologically in an album in iPhoto. All of the pictures have been renamed with descriptive titles in place of the original sequential numbers that the camera gave them. I want to upload all of the renamed pics to my photo host and the only way to retain the titles made in iPhoto is to export them to a folder outside of iPhoto. Fine, no problem. But the folder will only arrange them alphabetically, by date modified, or date created. I want to just upload all of my renamed photos in their chronological order, as they are in the iPhoto album. What am I doing wrong?

What you'll have to do is rename the in iPhoto with the Batch Rename->Title to Text sequentially. Then export them to the desktop using the File->Export->File Export menu option with the additional option to use the title for the new file name. That will produce the alphanumerical listing of your image files in the order you want.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Extract Edit Across a Dissolve causes Serious Error Crash

    Hoping that:
    1 - There's an update soon - it's been a while since we've had anything significant.
2 - This particular bug gets addressed.
I'm on a new Mac Pro - 64 GB Dual Hexacore 2.93 GHz.  Running Raid 0 internal with a Blade SSD in the 16x PCI slot. Other than Chrome, Motion (To get the Pro Codecs) and the Adobe Suite, I've installed nothing else on this rig.  Software updates are latest version
Quadro 4000 updated to latest published non-beta CUDA drivers.
I'm doing trim edits on a feature.  The timelines I'm working in are about 6 minutes long (Broken up by sequences).  Working in ProRes 422.
    Issue:
When I try to do an extract edit and either the in or the out point touches an audio dissolve, I get a Serious Error Crash.
My current Work-Around is to remove all the dissolves before I extract - but I have 8 channels of Audio and its an action film, so there's a LOT to remove.
    Eager for an update.

Since this is a new rig, I'm assuming this is a PPro CS6 installation you're referring to?

  • Btrfs + luks cause serious CPU usage

I often tried to forget about this, but in a time I use a external disk with btrfs.
bus as soon as I mount the disk via luks mapper device, I get serious CPU usage by kthreads. It goes that far that even typing into pidgin gets lagged/delayed.
Does anybody else have this kind of issue? An internal disk has the verysame effect. Tested copies with these combinations: ext4→btrfs; btrfs→btrfs; btrfs→ext4
    Thank you!
    Appendix:
    Phenom 9500 4x 2.2
    8GB DDR2 SDRAM
so the system should be pretty much capable of anything :>

I use pretty much the same options as you:
    $ grep backup /etc/fstab
    /dev/mapper/backup /mnt/backup btrfs defaults,noauto 0 0
I use the standard kernel from testing which is 2.6.39 though I have not seen this behavior on any previous kernel either.
If you don't use an indexer and something like iotop shows no activity I'm not sure what to try next. If you have hourly backups in place how many snapshots are there present on the volume? Are they being rotated or just building up? Could btrfs be doing some sort of rebalance (seems unlikely on a single disk pool)? Probably not being much help sorry.

  • I am having serious pixelation problems in yosemite with my CS6 applications

i recently purchased a new mac with yosemite on it and tried to install my CS6 design standard and all the applications are running in a horribly pixelated manor. I ran all the updates and the issue was resolved in illustrator and photoshop but not in anything else. does anybody know what to do?

There is nothing to do. CS6 apps do not support Retina displays except for PS and AI.

  • 10.4.7 update causes weird pixels on my G4 titanium PB

So, here's the deal, this is the only Apple update release that caused my G4 titanium powerbook to observe weird screen behavior (pixles appearing everywhere making it very hard to read thus impossible to use). The screenshot i took shows just the beginning. and trust me, after less than 4 minutes, i wasn't able to work at all. I had to reboot and now I’m kinda scared to see it again.
Is there a way to remove 10.4.7 and go back to 10.4.6
What have you done Apple to cause my screen to act in such a bizarre way?
    http://images.kodakgallery.com/photos2013/1/44/92/90/50/0/509092441110ALB.jpg
Too bad this forum doesn't allow picture upload.

Unfortunately, you have to re-install 10.4 and re-upgrade only to 10.4.6.
I love carbon copy cloner to make a bootable backup before any major upgrade. That way I can upgrade the bootable copy first and kick the tires before moving my internal hard drive to the new version. CCC then migrates from the external bootable to my internal.

  • Compressor causing renders to disappear

Mac Pro, FCP 5.1.4, DV sequence with primarily native media, plus a few HD 720 24p clips added, media on external FW 800 drive.
Every time I send my sequence to compressor, FCP comes up with a message saying my render files have gone missing, and sure enough, all rendered material goes away. I am able to setup my batch and encode, but every time I click on something in compressor, I must return to FCP to ok the missing renders dialog.
Even this is not too big a deal, however, the real inconvenience is that each time a new batch item begins, I must cliick ok on this box again for Compressor to continue. Since I am encoding a long piece to 2 mpeg2 files of different bit rates, an audio file, and an h.264 clip for the web, this means I must babysit this job very late into the night, waiting around just to click ok every couple hours.
Anyone seen this? maybe it has something to do with the external drive - I don't remember encountering this before... Spotlight?

    1. Did you do an import from that drive?  There's an option in import to disconnect the drive after the import.  It's useful importing the card from you camera, but it might just disconnect an internal drive too if selected.
    2.  To get the drive back without a reboot, try this:  Start, All Programs, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management.  Just opening Disk Management may bring it back.  If not, right mouse button on Disk Management, Rescan Disks.
