Compressor codec for IPad
I am currently using Final Cut Pro version 6 with Compressor 3.0.5 and would like to find a way to export my HD video (codex XDCAM) in a format I can read with my Ipad and also which let me preserve the 16 x 9 ratio of my video into the 4 x 3 screen of the Ipad (with letter box).
Can I get a plug-in to insert into Compressor for that purpose ? (I would like to avoid having to pay the full new Final Cut Studio version because I dont have MAC OS Leopard).
Thanks in advance for your suggestions
You can use the Apple Devices *Apple Tv* preset. Or build a new 720p H.264 preset - up to 30 fps ... Keep the data rate below 5 mbits/s.

Which Compressor/Codec for DV output?
So, what Codec/Compressor is everyone using to output to DV?
H.261 or DV/DVCPro? Something else?
Which one is best? Also, after choosing the best, where are all the places in FCP that you need to set the same Codec?1 Capture using the relevant (ie what your camera recorded to tape) codec. If you are in the US and recorded DV, the appropriate codec will be DV/NTSC Quicktime. There is an easy preset for it in FCP.
2. Edit your material on a timeline using the same codec. If you have FCP6 all you need to do is drop the first clip on the timeline and click yes if it asks if you want the sequence settings to match the clip. this will guarantee congruence between clip and sequence settings.
3. Export your material using Quicktime movie/current settings.
4. Open Compressor, import your exported file. Use the appropriate DVD compressor based upon the length of your video. Be sure to use AC3 for the audio.
5. Open DVDSP, import your assets, build and burn your DVD.

Which codecs does iMovie for iPad support?
I have videos from a Canon Powershot camera which are in 1280 × 720, H.264, Linear PCM. I can import these videos to iMovie on iPad but when I open iMovie it does not show the files.
I have also tried to import the videos via iTunes Movie Sync. I can play the video on the iPad but can not import it to a new project in iMovie.
Which codecs does iMovie for iPad support? If I can play the movie on iPad, it should be possible to edit it?
Where do I find the codecs supported by iMovie for iPad?iMovie was made to edit video shot on iOS devices; there is no support list, it was made to edit iOS video.
This allows iMovie to be stable (or should make it stable as the case may be).
That said, you are importing the video wrong, and may be in luck with your video.
The File sharing pane is just for importing iMovieiOS projects.
iMovie cannot edit video in the Movies app.
iMovie edits video that can be seen in the photos app.
So you need to import it via the photos tab, as you would photos.
The other option is using the camera connect kit.
If you can see the video in the Photos app, it is highly likely that you can edit it.
But be warned that using non-iOS sourced video can make iMovie very buggy and flakey.
Avid for iPad is made to edit more formats and might be a better choice if you have trouble. -
Hi all ,anyone knows some usefual Codecs for H.264 live video/audio
I'm headache about the JMF codecs ,they are too few ,and seems inefficiency, anyone knows pure java codecs for H.264 or MPEG4 ?And I think it's better a open source one ,do my thanks , guys!
Here are some basics....
FMLE creates RTMP protocol streams that PCs and Macs watch with Flash players. iOS devices don't understand RTMP (Flash), only HLS delivery of 10 second chuncks of downloaded video playback. Both systems understand H.264 video, but iOS wants to see AAC audio not MP3.
You didn't state how you are live streaming, meaning what bandwidth delivery service you are using. Live streaming only via RTMP won't get you to successful iPad and iPhone HTTP Live Stream. On-demand delivery to iOS devices normally requires .mp4 video files to be hosted, which Macs and PCs also understand via RTMP delivery. But unless your delivery service can convert .f4v or .flv files to .mp4 on the fly there is no easy way to to get to iOS via the direct file output of FMLE as of today. Sometimes we upload live encoded project files to our www.Wistia.com account for PC, Mac and iOS delivery. This is a YouTube / Vimeo paid type hosting service for on-demand only.
Some commercial CDNs (Content Delivery Networks) today allow an inbound live RTMP into their system using FMLE. Then they re-mux that RTMP stream into HLS delivery for iOS. Some work well using the native MP3 audio codec (Internap), but most require FMLE to have the AAC audio codec installed from Main Concept for $200. Or people use Wirecast from Telestream which is $500 per license to be able to run two instances on that one license.
In my 15 years of being a big commercial webcaster here in Silcion Valley, I have yet to find the perfect simple and easy and affordable RTMP to HLS live and on-demand delivery system. We currently do it different ways with multiple providers depending on the job. More offerings are coming out now and we try them all as they come down the pike.

Exporting .mov to H264 in Quicktime Pro not working for iPad!
Good morning All, Thanks for your help. When I take video's with my digital camera it records in Quicktime, however I have always had to export the videos with QuicktimePro in the H264 codec for them to transfer to my iPhone. What is happening with the iPad, is that when I export them to that or mp4 it says this movie could not be played on the iPad. The only work around I have found is to hit the advance tab in iTunes and convert it, then drag them out and back into iPhoto (because I want the videos with the event in Photos). Is anyone else having this issue? Any Suggestions? Thanks!!!
Who has similar problems. Who has workarounds.
Interesting... but wierder and wierder!
Not sure it is much of a workaround, but I just loaded my H.264/AAC M4V Harry Potter 7 file into QT 7 Pro and deleted chapers 2 through 30. While I agree that I cannot currently save the edited data as a standalone file, I could save it as a reference file that is non-compatible with QL under Mavericks. However, if I then open the reference file in QT 7 Pro, I could then use the "Movie to MPEG-4" option to "Pass through" both the audio and the video to create an MP4 file that will open in both QT X v10.3 and QT 7 and is QL compatible.
As to your subler workflow, while the MP4 file I created with subler did not open in QT 7, it did open in QT X v10.3 and the H.264 video track was QL compatible. I suspect the reason the MP4 file won't open in QT 7 and why QL won't play the Photo-JPEG track is that QT 7 and QL consider the secondary video track that is created by Subler to be "out of spec" for the MP4 file container. On the other hand, if I place the H.264/AAC data in an M4V file container, then it opens in both QT 7 and QT X v10.3 and both the H.264 and the Photo-JPEG tracks are QL compatible.
Nice catch on your part as I am still reviewing the QT X v10.3 forced conversions and had not even started looking as Subler. Also do most of my editing before conversion to H.264/AAC/AC3/Chapter output to M4V so it did not dawn on me to try and edit my M4V files. Thanks to your comments have learned that Subler does not like my AC3 DD5.1 audio track (now seems to cause an infinite loop in Subler due to Mavericks reading of AC3 audio track as having a 0 Kbps data rate) and QL now handles multiple video tracks. (Mavericks—one step forward and two steps back as far as QT is concerned.) -
Video compression for iPad?
We use Final Cut Pro 7 - and frequently compress our HD videos we make using Compressor. We use high end HD cameras, etc., and have beautiful results when compressing at, say 20 - 30mbs for display on HD monitors and televisions. We know how to compress for iPod and Apple TV, and various web sizes . . . but what parameters should we be using for the iPad?
I've read it plays up to 2.5mbs??
I hope I'm WRONG, because with fast moving subjects, you'll see a lot of pixelation at that low data rate.
I looked in the Compressor templates, but don't see one for iPad. Anyone know what settings we should be using? Or what's the highest data rate an iPad will play?
Thanks,
LarryHere's what the specs say is supported:
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file format
Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
My unit hasn't arrived yet for me to do any testing. -
anyone know where to get the codec for quicktime to play & export avi's?
Avi is a container that allows it to contain mutimedia content in various compression formats. QT already knows how to open or export avi files bur the default installation lacks the decompressors for many compression methods. These two sites have installers for codecs (COmpressors/DECompressors) that will play and export many but not all avi files in QT.
www.divx.com
www.3ivx.com
Note that some people (at least in MacOS) have reported problems with QT 7 and the most recent codecs from those sites. There is no general problem with QT 6 in MacOS or WIndows and no one has noted problems for QT 7 in Windows but use at your own risk until more people comment on QT 7 and these formats.
Also note that you need to purchase a QT Pro key ($30 US from an Apple Store) to export from the Player. -
Compressor codec not installed
I have tried to use compressor to make an m2v file for DVD studio pro 4 using the generic m2v codec provided by DVD stuio Pro4.. When I submit the file, compressor tells me that the action failed because the codec is not installed. What does that mean. I have installed all the components from the disc to my hard drive. I have used other codecs and the audio files work but not the video.
What is the codec for your footage you are trying to encode to m2v?
It it isn't a .mov file, that is probably your problem. -
What video converter app for mac would you suggest to convert videos for ipad mini?
Just recently got myself ipad mini and want to fill it up with movies. i have some but they have wrong format. And i don't know which format is the best for ipad mini(
iPad Mini supports .m4v, .mov, .mp4, and some of .avi files with Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) codec.
Generally, you can choose to convert files to MP4 format using utilities like Handbrake, Format Factory, etc. They are all free.
I have get a PS3 and iPad 2 years ago, sometimes I need to convert files to AVI for my PS3, so I choose a professional converter called AppGeeker. (while handbrake only output mkv and mp4 format, and FF reduces amount of quality of video)
it works marvelosly for me. -
Hi guys!
I'm currently upgrading a clients site for iPad support (video playback) and I'm have a VERY hard time producing videos that will actually play on iPad.
I'm using the following specification:
"H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;"
The software I'm using is Adobe Media Encoder and my preset fullfills all the requirements above but it just won't do and I've spent a whole day trying to get it work. iPad seems EXTREMELY picky about its videos. Ditching Flash might be a good idea but this is just insane.
This is the info (I used MediaInfo Mac) from one of my test movies:

Any help will be extremely appreciated because I already lost a whole day due to this!Try encoding a small source video directly in iTunes and then check the specifications afterwards in Quicktime (QT). Better still, open the video in QT directly and export it for iPad playback. Then follow the first step above.

Which flavor of H.264 for iPad with Compressor3?
I have a sequence with 1280x720 24p footage that I would like to compress with H.264 to view on an iPad. I am running FCP6/Compressor3 and I am not finding iPad in the Compressor3 settings within the Apple devices folder. Which setting would best suit my needs?
Thanks,
mpWhat specific version of Compressor 3 do you have installed?
In 3.5.3, there is an H.264 for iPad and iPhone 4 preset. Here's a droplet you can download and use:

The Most FCP-Friendly Codec for Offline Editing of Clips w/ Alpha Channels
Working with full-quality DigitalJuice animated backgrounds with alpha channels in a DV timeline can feel like swimming through molasses. There are a number of options for temporarily replacing the clips with low-res proxies (Uncompressed, JPEG2000, TGA, etc.). Before conducting extensive tests, I was curious as to whether or not anyone has an opinion on which 32-bit codec might be the easiest one for FCP to process, resulting in snappier playback while offlining.
Thanks,
Zapno, at least not last time I looked.
the avid meridian codecs for QT are downloadable from their website
http://www.avid.com/content/7952/Avid%20CodecsLE120Macpkg.zip
sme tips quoted from http://dvinfo.net/conf/archive/index.php/t-78006.html
it is important to move these components out of the root Library and put them into the User Library. That way they won't cause any conflict during startup.
I've since done some trial and error testing and it appears the only component that causes a conflict during startup is AvidAVUICodec.component.
The rest work just fine with compressor and seem to add support for:
Avid 1:1x (AvidAV1xCodec.component)
Avid D100 (AvidAVd1Codec.component)
Avid DNxHD (AvidAVdnCodec.component)
Avid DV (AvidAVdvCodec.component)
Avid Packed (AvidAVpkCodec.component)
Avid Meridian (AvidAVDJCodec.component)
The original AvidAVUICodec.component was part of the Meridian codecs paired with AvidAVDJCodec.component for ABVB systems, but it doesn't seem to be required anymore. Very odd.
Now, what works with FCP 5.1.2????
Everything except Avid D100 codec (AvidAVd1Codec.component) and the AvidAVUICodec.component.
So, if want to use Avid codecs with FCP 5.1.2, just install them, trash AvidAVd1Codec.component and AvidAVUICodec.component, then move the remaining components from Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime to Users/User name/Library/Quicktime.

Best codec for animation to DVD ?
I have a 1hr ANIMATION project to export from FCP 5.1
It is being delivered to someone who will use it and other material to author a DVD.
What would be the ideal way to deliver -
on mini DV or DVCAM tape ?
or a QT file of the whole show - if so, which codec is best - (file size is not a limitation) ?I have a 1hr ANIMATION project to export from FCP 5.1

I'm a bit perplexed by the whole post.
How could you start a one hour ANIMATION project without knowing how you were going to deliver it to whoever was paying you to do it?
Do you mean ANIMATION as in the codec or ANIMATION as in some type of single-frame or keyframed production? You are using a base codec for your work. Export using a lossless codec, such as ANIMATION, that has the same or better bit-depth than your base codec. However, if the final release is DVD, it is going to squished down to MPEG2 so it is in your best interest to find out who will be handling the compression and talk to them directly. Take them to lunch. If all they're going to do is run you video through Compressor, it really doesn't matter what you give them, it will be horrible. If tey're using a compressionist, take that individual to lunch with you.

Use Compressor to create iPad Ready Viedo and host on OS X 10.6 Wiki Server
Hi Everyone.
This might be in another Forum but I think the problem is with conversion as other videos on my wiki server work just fine, especially on my iPhone 3GS.
I've tried all the AppleTV presets and now I'm exporting an HD Video with the following settings:
Name: H.264 for iPad
Description: H.264 1280x720 video @ 5Mbps, progressive. Audio is 44.1kHz, stereo
File Extension: m4v
Estimated size: 1.07 GB/hour of source
Device: Apple TV HD
Frame sync rate: 5 seconds
Video Encoder
Format: QT
Width and Height: Automatic
Pixel aspect ratio: Default
Crop: None
Padding: None
Frame rate: (100% of source)
Frame Controls: Automatically selected: Off
Codec Type: H.264
Multi-pass: Off, frame reorder: On
Pixel depth: 24
Spatial quality: 50
Min. Spatial quality: 50
Temporal quality: 50
Min. temporal quality: 50
Average data rate: 2.56 (Mbps)
Maximum data rate: 14 (Mbps)
Audio Encoder
Format: MPEG4
Sample Rate: 44.100kHz
Channels: 2
Bits Per Sample: 16
AAC encoder quality: high
Data rate: 128 Kbps
Safari on my MacBook Pro plays the video beautifully but my iPad just hangs after trying to play. I can see the arrow shaped play button just fine. But no video. Also, I'm streaming it over the local network so I'm sure it isn't my bandwidth.
Thanks guys! Thanks Eric! It went smooth like a summer breeze.
