Compressor Compression Question

I have a huge QuickTime file that I output out of FCP 7, that is a 40 minute long presentation that mixes live video with Power Point slides. The video was shot using a Sony HXR-NX5U and the timeline used the ProRes422 codec. The final size of the movie out of FCP is 66.91 gigs, which I want to compress down to 2 gigs or less to post on YouTube.
What settings might I use in Compressor to achieve this? I'm looking to compress it as a QuickTime H.264 file.
Thank you!

I'm running Final Cut Studio 3, with FCP 7. I know of the YouTube preset in Compressor, but will it automatically compress down to the size I need, or do I need to limit the data rate, or adjust any other settings?

  • COMPRESSOR COMPRESSION CHOICE

Finalizing a low-budg film. Got about a 100 minutes of 10 bit uncompressed vid divided into 5 reels. Color corrected in FCP5 using Magic Bullet and exported 10bit, each Reel approx. 20 minutes/35 gigs each. About to deartifact, deinterlace in AE6 w/Magic Bullet then export again. I think I then end up RGB color space, but whatever.
Question 1. Should I export out of AE6/MB 10 bit uncompressed for Compressor? (YUV or RGB if I have the choice)
Question 2. What compress rate is the best in Compressor for each reel? I plan to import each Compressor compressed reel (combining the 5 reels) into DVD Pro to burn a 4.5 DVD of the whole thing. Each Reel needs to be compressed to about 1 gig each for it to fit in other words.
I thought about compressing the whole thing, but figure the computer would be down for a couple, three days and 1 glitch and the whole thing has to be started again.
I'd like to do a dual layer, but consumer external brands like La Cie seem not to work well with DVD pro. This is not a master. Just a sales tool at this point. But the time it takes to do this is painful and want to end up with the best product possible.
    Any advice will be helpful.

    Hey Bad Baby Post,
if i had a choice between YUV vs. RGB, i would go totally YUV 10-bit, not 12 or 16-bit, since the file sizes would be HUGE!
if you wanted a DVD-5, then your compressed 100 minutes of video with Dolby *.ac3 audio (stereo) then you would be lookign at a bit-rate of about 5.8 mbps average, maximum of 7 mbps and minimum of 3.5 mbps. of course this is assuming that it only has 100 minutes of the feature, and NO OTHER VIDEO. if it had menus, then a few static (still menus would be cool).
if you would go with a DVD-9, then with the same 100 minutes of video, you can have a CBR of 8 mbps with Dolby *.ac3 Stereo (@ 192 kbps).
also, keep in mind, for the DVD-9's, the burners are just fine, you can get an internal Pioneer DVR-11D that is AWESOME, but you would have to download Batchburn to make the OS see the drive as a super drive (like this, you can burn from iDVD, DVD SP, iTunes, etc). if not, you can just use a third party disc burner like Roxio's Toast Titanium (i use this all the time) or Dragon Burn (another i use all the time). where you might have problems is not the nurning liek i said, but the actual playback. remember, the majority of DVD DL discs are +R, not -R. some older players have trouble playing such discs. DVD-roms' (like in a lot of compters) have no trouble with this media.
i would go with a DVD-5, just for maximum compatibility with the DVD ste top players out there.

  • Compressor 3 questions - specifically streaming for web

I am new to the world of video compression and every thing else that comes along with it. Recently i have been getting some experiance w/ FCP and now need to get some experience with compression. I have access to a computer w/ Compressor 3 but i dont know enough to use it and get the results iam looking for.
The main problem iam facing now is how to get a fair quality (not necessarily crystal clear) video compressed for the web that can stream and hopefully average out at about 1.5 mb per minute at 400 x 300 dimesnions. I was shown some settings before that did this but it seems that i have either accidently changed them or they just dont work like they used too. I know it ssems wierd to suggest that they would suddenly stop working like they used to but it actually seems like this must be the case and oddly my friend started experianceing the same thing w/ the same settings.
These are the settings i used to use when exporting through Final cut using Quick Time conversion:
    Format: Quick Time Movie
    Compression type: H.264
    Frame Rate: 24
    Key frames: 100
    Data rate: 180
    size: 400 x 300
This used to make ok quality video with the size at approx. 1.5 mb per min. but it doesnt seem to do that anymore(????). Anyway if any one has any experiance or advice that can help please let me know.
These are some other questions I have:
    • In Compressor there are preset Apple settings and within those there is a folder for web and then for streaming. Do only these settings stream or are they just optimized for streaming? What constitutes a streamable file and can any of the other Apple presets also stream (if so which ones) ?
    • Are there adavantages to using Adobe Media Encoder over Compressor, or are there other good programs that can be recommended ?
    • Where can i read in a simplified or summarized way what all the comppressions terms mean, what the settings do, and which formats are ideal for what purposes etc.?
    Thanking everyone in advance

  • PAL to NTSC DVD compression questions

    Ok,
I have recently finished a dvd in PAL format with about 4.5GB total video once compressed. Now I need to get this into an NTSC version. Is it possible to use Compressor 2 to convert the DVD compressed clips/audio [the ones ready for PAL DVD] into NTSC format ready to build my project in DVDSP? Or do I need my original quicktime clips in PAL format and change them to NTSC in Compressor 2 then make them into NTSC DVD ready clips? Also what is the best setting for NTSC DVD in compressor that will be ok for the size of my final version [4.5GB]. Sorry about these questions but I made the PAl version with compressor 1 and there was far less settings to worry about.
    powerbook 12   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I'm pretty sure you need to go back to your Final Cut source material and re-export via Compressor by selecting 'advanced standards conversion' to get your NTSC files. Then you can import these into DVDSP as NTSC assets.

  • Compressor Batch Question

Hey, quick question about using the batch function in compressor. im using it to compress a 4 minute video piece using H.264 which im going to put up on the web. whats the diference between the different batches such as H.264 100mps. 300mps & 800mps??

Those numbers - 100, 300, 800, reflect the kilobytes per second of your compressed video & audio stream.
The more bytes per second, the better your file's quality can be - and I say can because it's not an exact science - but your file size will also be that much larger.
Once you've selected a preset, the Inspector window of Compressor 2 will show you an estimated file size in the Summary tab, if that helps.

  • Quicktime Movie compression question

This is a G5 using 10.5.8 and Final Cut Pro 5.1.4.
I'd like to submit a how-to video to a contest, and the maximum allowable size is 500 MB. My movie is presently three times that size. Is there any way I can compress a QT movie to a smaller size without too much loss of quality, or do I have to just keep editing and chopping away at the video until I get it down to one-third the length it is now? I'm afraid I'll lose too much how-to information if I do that.
I exported the 7 min. 26 sec. video as a QuickTime movie to see what size file it was, and it came out 1.58 Gigabytes.
Under Export, I see that there are also options to export to Compressor or Using QT Conversion. Can anyone tell me how, or where to find out how, to export this video at its present length, but as a smaller file, without losing too much quality? The contest will accept a variety of video formats, but when I converted the project to AVI or MP4 (Using QT Player) the quality got really bad, with a lot of artifacts, halos, etc.
    Any advice appreciated.
    Tom

Thanks Ben--it looks like it will take care of things. I note that this method shrinks down the QT viewing window and cuts down on the number of frames per second, but the quality isn't reduced too much. By doing that I will be able to send them the full 7.5 minutes of my video, reduced to a file size of about 450 MB, down from 1.58 GB.
This how-to contest asks you to send them your video over the Internet, but I don't know whether they're viewing and judging the videos on a computer or not. If they're not, then they're going to be viewing mine in a pretty small window on whatever monitor or TV they use, but it still beats chopping the video down to practically nothing so that I could send it to them in full quality.
Thanks much for taking the time to help me out.
    Best wishes,
    Tom

  • FCP - Compressor - DVDSP Question

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to figure out what settings to use to get better results when creating a DVD coming from FCP.
    Here's the information :
In FCP, I edited a small test video made with a 3D software. Saved uncompressed in 720 x 480 NTSC, 30 fps, anamorphic for 16:9. Looks great in FCP.
Using Compressor, I use DVD Best Quality 90 min, 16:9.
I import the resulting file in DVDSP and the quality is horrible. I know that the movie is compressed in MPEG2 and it looses quality but I'm sure I can get better results (well, I hope).
Any idea, tips, tricks to enhance the final result would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Phanault

    Hey Phanault,
did you use compressor presets or did you create settings from scratch?
also, you said your video codec was "uncompressed". did you mean FCP uncompressed 4:2:2 8-bit or like an uncompressed Blackmagic, Kona file (yes, they are different).
i don't think it has to do with your PAR, but more with settings.
what you can try is to use the 4:3 preset in compressor and manually set the 16x9 flag in DVDSP, like that, you dont have to recreate your video in 4x3 (just a suggestion and technically, both methods work!).

  • Aspect Ratio/compression question

I have tried exporting an H.264 file out of FCP using both QT conversion and compressor. The native sequence is DVCPRO HD 720P (16:9 aspect ratio). Each time the file is exported no matter what I set the geometry settings to, it comes out as a 4:3 aspect ratio file. What am I doing wrong?

    Hey Casey,
what is the file resolution of your compressed file?
your final file resolution should be 1280x720.
    is your image being distorted?
what settings are you using for the export.
a little more information would be greatly appreciated and there are compression gurus that would gladly help you out.

  • File Compression Questions/Help Needed

Question, I have just completed an audio presentation project (audio book on CD) for a client (681 mgs) which I now need to have replicated 1500 times over. The problem is my outsourced replicator will only press cd's up to 650 mgs. Therefore, I need to figure out how to compress the presentation just slightly (as to not lose tone quality) to get in onto the disc. (The CD Rom will be played in the car or computer Cd players)
I used the Soundtrack 1.2 to complete the project and also have Quicktime pro, however, I'm not sure what to do and how to change the settings to get the compression correct.
    Thanks

Is it something you can simply save as an .aif file, then import it into iTunes and then compress it to mp3 at, say, 256 Kbps? That's pretty good... but if you're looking for better... perhaps an mp2? Not easy to find an mpeg1 layer 2 compression utility, but I use Sound Converter:

    It's a start...

  • Compressor  presets question

I'm using Compressor 3 to compress a 1.5 minute video in Apple ProRes 422 to something pretty portable- something that I can demo on my late 2005 PowerBook G4. Exporting my video right from Final Cut Pro 6 gives me a file roughly 2.3 GB. What's the best compression setting to use? I'm using a Power Mac G5 Dual Core 2.3GHz model (Late 2005) with the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 and 6.5 GB of RAM.

Would that be the preset in the 'Quicktime' folder, or one of the presets in the 'Apple Devices' folder? I'm not actually looking to play it on a specific device- just thru Quicktime on my PowerBook.

  • Jpeg Compression Question

I would be grateful if someone could help me with this question
I have been working on a series of images taken in Raw , edited in PSE9 and then saved as Jpegs .
The Raw files were all roughly 10Mb each but the maximum size I can save in Jpeg seems to be 1Mb . Is this correct ?
Up to now this has never been an issue as I usually don't get anything printed larger than 5x7 , however I'm hoping to print off some larger poster sized prints and the Online site that I use only accepts Jpegs . Is 10/1 compression the least compression I can do in PSE 9 or am I missing something somewhere ?
    Edward

    Hi Edward
Normally for prints which are looked at closely you would select a resolution of 240ppi to 300ppi.
But for posters you can go very low, even much lower than 72ppi used for web images. This enables the print size to be vastly increased.
Because posters are viewed from a distance they will still look perfectly acceptable when a ppi of 10-19 is used.

  • Premiere / Media Encoder Compression Question

    Hey all -
Been banging my head on this one for awhile, thought I'd present my problem here - hope I can find a viable solution.
So, I have a 20 minute HD short film that I finished editing in Premiere last month. My sound engineer is working on the film, and requires the video it to be no larger than 100mb so he can work on it... and he needs it exported as a .MOV. My question is, I can't seem to get the file size down to less than 1gb.
What's the best way to compress a 20 minute HD video to a 100mb .mov? My options seem limited to size and 'quality' settings ( no VBR settings for .mov) ... but when I push the quality settings down super low, the video gets seriously degraded and the file size doesn't crunch down that small ...
Desperately need your advice here, friends! Can this be done, and how?
    thanks !!!
    -mark

The problem is that 100MB is hardly getting started with a 20 minute HD video.
There are a number of ways to cut down the file size. The first is to use an efficient codec. If you must use a Quicktime wrapper (.mov) then select H.264 as your codec.
The second is to cut down the bitrate (quality), which you have seen is rather destructive.
Once you have cut the bitrate, then there are ways to make the quality come back up. You could cut the frame rate to about 15. It would make it a bit jerky but since this is for sound and not color or other video related editing, you can cut the bitrate in half when you cut the frames in half and still get something decent.
You can cut the bitrate even more and get good quality if you export a standard definition video instead of HD. Does the audio guy really need HD?
In any case, 100MB is barely anything nowadays. Not for a 20 minute video.
Why does it have to be so small? Can't you post it where it can be downloaded> At around 1GB or so?

  • File compression question

Question about using the file compression feature within Finder. I understand that when I select multiple files and compress them, it creates a ZIP file with the default name 'archive.zip.' I created a working folder on my desktop and put in about 16 alias of photos that are down in my iPhoto 'originals' folder. When I created the archive.zip, file it was only 2.1 MB (the jpg's varied in size from <1 MB to 3 MB).
I did this with the presumption that by using aliases in my working folder, the compression utility actually compressed the jpg's in the various folders but not the alias pointers.
So, since the archive.zip is only 2.1 MB, what conclusion can I draw? Can the compression really squeeze them down that much?

that's wrong. the compression utility compressed the aliases as it should have. if you want to compress the original images that's what you need to put in that folder, not aliases. but keep in mind that jpegs are already compressed so you'll hardly gain any space by compressing them further.
So, since the archive.zip is only 2.1 MB, what conclusion can I draw? Can the compression really squeeze them down that much?

  • Weird JPG compression question

    Hi,
I am using I am using Windows 7 x64. My camera (Nikon D700) automatically saves copyright data with my name and phone number. I am editing thoose JPEG files from Photoshop CS5 and save them on a HDD with compration ratio 12. For example:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26109102/TEST1.jpg
As you can see file size is about 4.67 MB
However, when I right click to file in windows 7 and choose properties and than remove my phone number, file size dramatically reduce at 1.45 MB. Here is a file:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26109102/TEST1%20-%20just%20remove%20phone%20number.jpg
So what is the reason of that? Whan I compare both files I can not see the difference in compression. Could you also check it please. Is it a kind of bug?
    Thanks in advance.
    Koray

The original compression ratio is 66MB/4.5MB = 15 (mental arithmetic).
The final compression ratio is about 66MB/1,45MB = 45.
Such a high compression should be clearly visible, mainly at edges.
But the two images are almost identical. Use image calculation > subtract
and analyze the resulting alpha channel.
    a) by histogram
    b) by an extremely steep curve.
There are differences, but these are very small.
In my opinion the question is not yet answered. Or is the answer "Microsoft
has improved the standard JPEG compression by factor three"?
I'm using older software, therefore I can't reproduce the OP's tests.
    Best regards --Gernot Hoffmann
    Edit:
Compression by factor 45 for arbitrary images would deliver really bad results.
The situation here is slightly less critical, because large parts of the image are
    almost uniform.
But even if we assume an effective compression by factor 25 for the image parts
with details - the compression artifacts should be visible, in my opinion.
But the aren't. Here we need some clarification.
