Compressor Discards Chapter Markers

Hello All,
Honesty up front, I will be cross-posting this in the Compressor forum as well. The issue is this: I have an almost 90 minute ProRes Proxy cut in Final Cut, I export a Quicktime movie with the chapters, and have double and triple checked that those QT movies have the Chapters in them. I bring the file into Compressor, drop on the 90 minute best quality preset, and then wait 10 hours for the compression to finish. After the first time didn't bring the Chapters in, I redid it. What I changed this time is I did NOT check "Include Chapter Markers only" in the Extras tab of Compressor, but I did the first time. I just noticed that the Preview window doesn't show the markers when I open the file in Quicktime, I can see them. I also ran a short test, about 20 minutes of the final cut, and it had the chapter markers. Also, I've exported a chapter list from Final Cut and tried to import it into DVDSP, but it doesn't understand the file. Anyone know why they're not transferring over, and more importantly, how I can quickly re-encode a 22+GB file for many DVD burns tonight?
Thanks,
-Brian

Thanks for the reply. I've made many DVDs before with chapter markers, I mean heck, my first ever DVD had chapter markers. It doesn't matter whether I selected "All Markers" "DVD Studio Pro Markers" or "Chapter Markers", none of them would show up in Compressor. In Quicktime 7, they were all there, but never in Compressor. The exported movie was a Self-contained ProRes Proxy file. What I ended up doing was exporting the Chapter list from Final Cut, then manually editing the file to remove color, type, duration everything but the timecode placement and it's name. Why does Final Cut export all that info if the resulting file isn't understandable by Compressor? And for what it's worth, I'm working on the original 17" MacBook Pro, so while it has a Core Due 2.16, it only has the max of 2GB of RAM and after all, still is a 4 year old laptop. I doubt much would make this go quicker. Also, I made the disc image and placed it on my G4 Cube to burn as well as plug in my new Blu-ray drive so I was making 3 discs at once.
Thanks though,
-Brian

  • Imported asset from Compressor with chapter markers- Now what?

I put chapter markers in (Compressor) before submitting in Compressor. I have opened DVDPro and imported the asset which is divided up into 6 chapters. I want each chapter to have a button. I have a template I have chosen with 8 buttons and deleted two of them. How do I activate those buttons according to the chapter breaks? I feel I am close... Thanks!

Thanks. Tried to read the manual but became very confused. I'm recovering from surgery and it's alot to absorb right now and I'm under a deadline- easier to ask a question. For what it's worth, I did read the FC6 manual

  • Compressor and chapter markers...

    Part II:
In my earlier post, I stated that I had shot some 24p footage with a new camera. The footage looked beautiful during the edit, then when I used Quicktime Conversion to make an m2v for DVDSP (which normally works perfectly for me), there was interlacing problem that made the video unwatchable.
After wildly pushing random buttons and using electro-voodoo, I was able to get my 24p footage to NOT have horrible interlacing problems on export from FCP, but at a terrible price: all my chapter markers were gone.
So my question is this: Does Compressor NOT keep chapter markers (making it absolutely unuseable), or is there a simple setting I've overlooked?
    Any help would be appreciated...

    Hi,
Unfortunately, I'm at work and don't have immediate access to the exact version numbers (but they're not the most recent). I am familiar with the different types of markers and I know it's a Compressor problem because I did the original m2v conversion with QuickTime Converter and the chapter markers were fine. I just had horrible interlacing issues. When I use Compressor, I can get the interlacing to go away (after hours of work), but now the chapter markers are gone.
My normal workflow goes: Shoot in 30p -> Capture in iMovie (this eliminates A/V sync problems with capturing in FCP) -> Edit in FCP and save as m2v with QuickTime converter -> open in DVDSP and make DVD's -> give to client. This has worked more times than I can count, and the only difference this time was that I shot in 24p instead of 30p. I even shot test footage ahead of time (genius that I am) and everything looked great. I simply didn't take that footage ALL the way through the process or I wouldn't be writing this now.
Perhaps with the most recent version of Compressor this isn't a problem, but in my version it is. If this was my own project I'd let it die, but this is for someone else, and I don't want to leave them hanging. I'm already a week behind schedule.
I'll tell you this: I'll never shoot in 24p again.
    Thamks,
    Darh Brian

  • Compressor stripping chapter markers?

In preparing videos for DVD Studio Pro 4 I've run into a snag where (fcp) chapter markers are recognized within Compressor (2) but once compressed as MPEG-2's they are no longer seen once the MPEG2 is imported into DVDSP.
If I bypass Compressor and import directly from Final Cut, they come through. For a bunch reasons among them the client's preferred workflow, I want to compress with Compressor. I've been using the MPEG-2 Custom presets built into DVDSP. Is Compressor stripping them or is there a problem with DVDSP recognizing them?

Unlike the native Qt from FCP which automatically displayed the chap markers in DVD SP, once has to ctrl click the video in the TimeLine and choose "show embedded markers"

  • Export to AppleTV via Compressor, Chapter Markers Wrong

I'm exporting various projects out to AppleTV via Compressor with Chapter Markers. Works great except for the Chapter Markers, which are out of sync...significantly, by 30 seconds or so. Any ideas on what the problem might be or how to ensure Chapter Markers will transfer over to the AppleTV setting in compressor?

So this is a Compressor-specific issue, right?
What I mean to say is, if you're exporting QT movies out of FCP, those do not exhibit the shift in chapter markers, correct? Just trying to determine if FCP/QT is the culprit here.
Or are you exporting directly to Compressor? Or adding the chapter markers directly in Compressor?

  • Is it possible to get Chapter Markers out of FCPX?

It seems like a tremendous short-coming that Final Cut Pro X doesn't allow for chapter markers that can be used in iDVD or DVD Pro. Surely there is some way to get used-defined markers from Final Cut Pro X or at least re-define the Final Cut Pro X markers in the DVD authoring applications. Does anyone know how to do this?

I couldn't figure out any way to do this. A workaround I used was to send to Compressor, add chapter markers there, and burn a DVD from Compressor (with a very limited menu), or export media from FCP X and import into iMovie to add chapter marks, then send to iDVD.
I agree that lack of DVD publishing support is a tremendous shortcoming of FCP X.

  • DVD SP markers or Chapter Markers?

    Hi
What's the difference between DVD SP markers and Chapter Markers in the menu to do a QT export from FCP 6? I want to make a sel-contained movie from my seq to take to Compressor with chapter markers - so which do I choose, DV SP markers or Chapter Markers?
    Thanks
    K

Using DVD-SP Markers will include all chapter markers and also any compression markers you might have set. Chapter Markers only includes the actual chapter markers.

  • How do I export from Compressor 4 to iDVD with chapter markers?

I get that Final Cut Pro X does not create chapter markers.
I send it to Compressor 4 to do this.
    Ok, so far, so good.
How do I export this so that I can then author the DVD to include a menu page, etc?
Do I do this in iDVD?  If so, what format, as I see that iDVD does not import MPEG-2.

Don't use the DVD preset in Compressor. Use an MPEG4 format or maybe even AppleTV preset.
This Apple Support Article might help a little.

  • Compressor - export to Blu-ray with more than 6 chapter Markers?

    Hi,
I'm interested in creating Blu-Ray discs.  I've played around taking a self contained 30 minute movie I created with FCPro 7 - it has several chapter markers put in while editing in  FCPro.
I took the SC movie and brought it into Compressor and burned directly to a DVD with the Chapter markers.  It worked perfectly.
2 questions, if anyone has done this . . . if I buy a Blu-Ray burner and firewire it into my MacBook Pro - can I burn the Blu-Ray exactly like I did the conventional DVD?  Except now it'll be High Definition?  I'm guessing in COmpressor, when I 'selected' the internal DVD burner - I guess I'll see the new external Blu-Ray one after I firewire it into the MacBook Pro?
My question is, will it then burn to the Blu-Ray exactly like it did to the internal conventional DVD burner, except be in HD now?
I just don't want to buy a Blu-Ray burner and have something nt work?  Thanks, if anyone can confirm this.
I also have Roxio Toast Titanium 11.  But keeping it all in Compressor seems easier - with limited screens.
Oh, I only get 6 chapter markers on a screen thru Compressor.  Any tricks as to how I can get more than 6?  I have like 30, and I'd rather not go thru 5 screens getting to the end!
Thanks very much if anyone has any experience in this area.
    Larry

Thank you, Shawn.  You're confirming everything I thought!
Just asking . . . perhaps you have a few thoughts here:
    - Is Compressor version 4 any "different" than 3.5 - as far as just dropping in a QT movie master to compress?
    - I guess there's no way to get more than 6 Chapter Markers in Compressor DVD?  I don't see a way, perhaps there is? Or . . . I have to learn toast!  But I can do that!  Just easier if Compressor would do it all!
    Thanks again

  • Chapter Markers missing via Compressor?

Hi y'all, Using the latest FCP Studio, I used the default Compressor setting for DVD best 90 minutes, and my chapter markers did not get exported. Any idea what the problem is, or how to recapture them without re-exporting from FCP? I can't find a way to export the text of the markers. I also read that markers on clips will not export, only from the timeline, but FCP would not let me add Chapter markers to the timeline. It is being ornery.

    Jefferis
You can read this tutorial about * Chapters and Compression Markers *.
FCP lets you add chapter markers in timeline; you must be doing something wrong. You can add the markers in Compressor too.
    Hope that helps !

  • FCP-X  Compressor 3.0.5 (need chapter-markers)

    Can I send a FCP-X-project to Compressor 3.0.5?
I just need to set DVD-chapter-markers in there!
Or do you have another idea how to set individual chapter-markers??

This is more evidence that Apple really is not catering to a professional audience. Their agenda for a while has been digital-only content. They focus on getting finished products to ipods, ipads, and apple TVs.
Even consumers have complained about iDVD being ignored over the years in terms of feature set. I bet the next iLife will be the one to not include it.

  • Export fcp 5 to compressor, bye-bye chapter markers

If I'm reading the manuals and the pro training books right, the only way to export chapter markers from FCP 5 is to a QT movie. That kinda stinks a little.
Would a workaround be to export to QT and then run compressor as stand-alone? Seems like an extra step, more time and a possiblity of introducing artifacts from all of the handling.
I also tried to export markers as text file. DVD SP can import a chapter marker text file.
My original plan was to create the chapter markers in Compressor so I would get exact i-frame placement, but what a royal pain! At least in FCP you can bang through them with keyboard shortcuts.

How much space is left on that external drive? As to the rez of your timeline, pick the sequence, and select Command-0 (that's a zero). The dialogue box will tell you what codec you're working with.
Without knowing anything else, you will definitely experience better performance by exporting to a different drive than your media is on - that drive is being asked to both read and write at the same time, which slows it down considerably. If you can export it to a different drive, you can expect to see your export time cut perhaps in half.
However, six hours is still way too long. There's some other problem going on here, it may be the drive being too full or perhaps the rez of your sequence is really high.

  • Compressor does not recognize chapter markers

I have exported my FCP timeline with chapter markers to a self-contained QT file.
I have enabled the text track in the QT file. Now I want to encode the QT file to MPEG-2 with the chapter markers. But I don't see any markers in Compressor? I only see the enabled text track...
Any help greatly appreciated - I must use forced I-frames due to the accuracy of placing the chapters on the final DVD.

I just ran into this problem today myself. It's unbelievable; I get so tired of Apple programming methods!! Do they even test or use these things before they release them so things make sense to the end user?
    *breathe*
Alright. Ken Stone to the rescue!
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/exporting_markers_fromfcp.html
Ok, so before I get flamed, yes, there's everything to be said about understanding how to use a program before using it. I'm just asking for a little common sense programming.

  • FCP Chapter Markers/Compressor

I have all my chapter markers in my sequence in FCP all set and I want to export with compressor so I can use the two files and load them into DVDSP.
If I export with compressor, will it automatically recognize my chapter markers when I bring them in for a chapter index in DVDSP?
I know you can do this with Quicktime movie export, but I honestly prefer Compressor so I was wondering if it will automatically do this itself within the program.

Hi Jonesi, I would highly recommend that:
    • you *DONT "send to compressor" from FCP timeline or 'EXPORT to COMPRESSOR*" from FCP timeline because it is simply too slow. Instead create a EXPORT AS QUICKTIME MOVIE with (a QT reference MOVIE (dont tick "self contained qt time movie" in the QT dialogue box". . The use the refernce movie as INPUT to compressor.app. Try it it works great! MAke a compressor DROPLET for fully automated work flow.
    • _Chapter markers should be made on the TIMELINE that is used for the final EXPORT_. +Beware not to use CHAPTER markers in nested sequences.+

  • Chapter markers lost from quicktime MOV in compressor

I searched on this topic and can't seem to find it specifically. Soo....
When we export from FCP through compressor to an m2v, chapter markers come through fine and appear in DVD SP just fine. However, an editor of mine exported to a quicktime MOV with the chapter markers. The file, when opened in quicktime, show the chapters there.
However. If I run the MOV through compressor using the same set ups, the chapter markers are striped from the resulting file.
I am wondering if there is something I am missing when I have to do this from an MOV with chapters.
    OR
If there is some way to export or extract the chapter marker information in a way that DVD SP can import. The text track that is in Quicktime has a good deal of other information that DVD SP won't accept as a chapter marker file. Argh.
Can FCP export JUST the chapter marker text. I am obviously going to just go in and add the chapter markers to the track in DVD SP myself. But, as everyone knows doing this after compressing to M2V I will no longer be able to have those markers on the exact frame I want due to GOP.
So, I am asking this for the next time I have an MOV with chapters that I want to convert to mpeg2 and retain the markers for DVDSP.
Just so you know... yes. These markers where properly tagged as chapter markers. (obviously because quicktime shows them as such.)
Thanks guys. I know someone else has had to deal with this somewhere.

I must be losing it. I meant to post in this thread.
My chapters are clean. Pretty good at avoiding anything problematic. I even keep spaces out of my folder names because when I learned to use computers they weren't allowed. (only 128 characters too, if I remember correctly)
I have the previous versions of Final Cut Studio. The recent decline of DVD and the economy has eaten my departments budget to upgrade the OS to Leopard and to Studio 2 so FCP 5.1.4, etc.
Maybe this has been fixed in the upgrade?
My editor has upgraded. So, this would be entirely a moot issue if Apple saw fit to make their projects backwards compatible. (Don't get me started on that) I guess I will have to stay on top of my contract editors and sending me an XML so I can work in their projects. Or giving me the M2V's I ask for already rendered.
Until we can upgrade around here.
    thanks for the help tho.
