Compressor - Dolby Digital 5.1 AC3 encoding problem

I'm completely stuck - I'm creating AC3 files in compressor using the "add surround sound feature" from 6 DISCREET mono AIFF files. I know they are discreet because I've listened to them in STP.
When I create the AC3 files, however, they playback (on a surround sound system that supports 5.1) in all speakers - I'm getting bleed from each track on all speakers - for example, I can hear spoken dialog in the rear speakers, though the discreet AIFF files for both rear speakers do not this spoken dialog in them.
I'm at a loss and under pressure to create true, 5.1 AC3 files today. I have no idea what I could be doing wrong. Any ideas? Does it matter that my Mac Pro sound card does not support 5.1 Playback (again, I'm listening to the files on a surround sound system, not on this computer)
Thanks for any help you may have!

You may need Apple's MPEG2 QT plugin as well for MPEGStreamclip.
Also, consider if running windows in parallels/Boot Camp etc that there's a windows version, and possibly a linux version.
VisualHub code was released open source - Google FilRedux and PunyVid (iSquint derivative). Not tried either though.

  • Encoding Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC3) sound in MP4 files using AC3 pass-through

Looking for an application that will encode Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC3) sound in an .mp4 container using AC3 pass-through for playing videos with surround sound on ATV.
Handbrake is out of the question because I run Tiger. The Tiger version cannot do AC3 pass-through.
Visual Hub is no longer available.
    Any other options?

  • Live! 5.1 SB0100. Can decode Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC3) from S/PDIF-

Hi,?i have a Sound Blaster Li've! 5. model: SB000. This can decode AC3 from S/PDIF IN and out to analog outputs?. My idea is connect Xbox 360 to S/PDIF IN and decode Dolby Digital to analog outs. Thanks.

Nope. The original EMU0K chip always had resampling enabled on S/PDIF input so that if there was any clock drift at all bits could change and damage the AC3 encoding. The EMU0K2 (Audigy) chip was changed to somehow allow bypassing the core clock so the S/PDIF sample values could get into memory without alteration.

  • Success with sorting Compressor Leopard S L O W encode problem - here's how

    Hi all,
After struggling for a LONG time and picking up some tips here on the way, I finally got Compressor encoding in a reasonable time on Leopard - before it was taking DAYS to compress to H.264 - it would just crawl along at a brain numbingly slow pace and I knew something was wrong.
Not knowing any better I'd done an upgrade from Tiger to Leopard and then had this huge slowdown in compressor.
    here's how I solved it.
    1. Followed the steps in the Apple KB article
    (Also summarised here http://www.scottsimmons.tv/blog/2008/01/11/compressor-hatred-resolved/ )
That wasn't enough on it's own, however. I tried it about 4 times to no avail.
    2. Even though I wasn't having 'can't connect to queue' or QMaster issues I still did the prefs change listed here
    http://www.extreme-nepal.com/forumboards/Qmasterfix.png
And lo and behold I am now getting decent encode times again under Leopard.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • Yeah Handbreak upgrade now does Dolby Digital 5.1!!!

    http://handbrake.fr/
Handbreak can now create MPEG4 files from DVDs in the exact format like the one purchased from iTunes.. so can be played on AppleTV, iPod, iPhone etc.
MPEG4 with H.264 video, Audio Tracks can choose Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC3) + Dolby ProLogic II, Audio Track 2 - whatever you want.
tried it last night work flawlessly and is about twice as fast encoding as before (not a carefull test but it was WAY faster)
    and it's free!!

Can anyone please help me on this, if you guys can check is the 2-track option available while watching movies on iPad 2... or is it just me who is unable to find it despite these movies being encoded in DD 5.1

  • Dolby digital via Toslink

    Hardware
    Mac mini (mid 2011)
    Yamaha YAS-101
I've connected a mini to a Yamaha YAS-101 via Toslink hoping to receive Dolby Digital 5.1. The problem is that the YAS-101 detects the signal as stereo. I was under the impression that it shouldn't be a problem to achieve this via Toslink? Tested with Itunes and VLC.
The YAS-101 detects DD when playing a bluray from a PS3 so shouldn't be a problem there.
    Thankful for any help.

If your Mac Mini has a HDMI port, it's one of the few Apple products that does audio (5.1) and video through the HDMI port.

  • ¿Does Audigy 2 NX decode Dolby Digital 5.

    Hi,
I've purchased an Audigy 2 NX to connect my xbox 360 via optical sound wire and get Dolby Digital 5..
The problem starts here, i've connected the console to optical In (in the sound card) and i've connected the 5. via standart jacks (the 3 typical jacks), if i set Dolby Digital 5. mode on the xbox 360 i don't get any sound, but if i set it to Stereo Digital it sounds but only in 2. mode (front speakers).
The dolby digital led in the sound card never works, it's always off, it suposes to be on when it detects a Dolby Digital Input (like the 360 one's) but it always remains off.
How can i decode Dolby Digital 5. via optical in? In the sound card spec's says that this card is able to Decode DD 5. and 7., but it seems to be a lie!.

this soundcard does not decode from external source...so it won't work this way.

  • Dolby Digital Live - Not Worki

    Hi guys,
I am having a few snags with Dolby Digital Li've. I purchased a Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Titanium Fatalty (Championship Gaming Series) in order to convert audio to Dolby Digital Li've and send it to my home cinema amp. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to get it to work
I have enabled Dolby Digital Live in the 'Encoder' tab in the Creatiev Audio Console and I have set SPDIF out as the default in Windows Vista Control Panel. The SPDIF output is listed there as 'working' but when I ask it to do a test an error just comes up 'Failed to play test tone'. Interestingly if I try to play a video or audio in Windows Media Player that crashes - I don't get any sound at all.
Games play but with no sound. Set the default back to the Speakers and all is well.
Anyone know how to solve this Am I missing something obvious
    My system is:
    - Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme Edition QX6700 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.66GHz (066FSB)
    - Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator DHX PC2-6400C4 TwinX (2xGB)
    - Gigabyte GA_P35_DQ6 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2
    - Seagate 600W
    - Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Titanium Fatalty
    - XFX 8800 Ultra Extreme 768MB GDDR3 DVI HDTV Out PCI-E
    Thanks in advance!

Just as an update I now seem to have the system working 'in game' which is exactly what I wanted. Windows still won't play the test tone and Media Play doesn't like it at all - but Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars works as do a few other games I've tried.

  • How to encode Dolby Digital (AC3) 24 bit

I noticed that all my dolby digital setings in Compressor are in 16 bit. Is there a way to have them set on 24 bit. In A.Pack, you could encode the audio in 24 bit.

I could be misunderstanding something, but I've been reading Apple's whitepaper to make sure of the details.
"48 bit" is unclear, because it could mean 12x4 or 16x3.  Both combinations are impossible with ProRes 422.

  • Dolby Digital/AC3 encoding?

I just bought a K8N Neo4, and hooked it up to my Panasonic audio receiver - just the one cable, S/PDIF optical. I was hoping to get 5.1 sound out of this, but all I get is two channel stereo.
Is there any way to encode a signal that my receiver can use to produce full surround sound (it supports Dolby Digital and DTS signals)?

    Nice.
I never even heard of it.  I always thought the only way was to go 6ch analog and have your external amp support multi channel in if the source wasn't DD/DTS already in which case it's not DD anyway.  Otherwise you only get 2ch PCM on the SPDIF. Then again I only have owned Creative sound cards....geez even then Creative made you buy the breakout box to enable AC3 decoding unless you made a board mod...  Of course you still need a multi channel source.  What kind of software do they come with?  Can you play a 6ch .wav for example and have a DD/DTS stream over SPDIF/Optical? or is only really for games, so for simplicity you can have one cable/fiber and not go analog till it 's on the way to the speakers?  Still though except for a few less cables, and when the D/A conversion takes place(and therefore the quality of which component is doing it, sound card or amp) I don't think it's that big of a deal if you have multichannel input amp.  DD is still not lossless compression so the big advantage would seem to be for those without multichannel inputs.  Otherwise it would be an interesting comparrision for the audiophile which I'm not.  You have a pure source and you compress to DD and lose quality and then decode and output  vs. Pure source going analog, losing signal quality along the way and outputting.  someone on the internet has surely done it.

  • Audio to dolby digital surround AC3

    Regards,
I have one test sequence in FCP,,, left channel is sound, and right is speech,, then exported separately to two mono channels,,, named SOUND and SPEECH,, I can hear each channel nice after that,,
But, when I make AC3 file with compressor, I have problem.
Can somebody tell me where I make mistake??
With compressor I make New Job With Surround sound group,, then select for every channel one mono channel, from FCP, specifically; L - speech, C-sound, R -speech, Ls -sound, Rs-sound ,,,
after select File format,, Dolby digital Professional,, Target sistem is DVD video,,,, Audio coding mode is 3/2,,, In Preprocessing, compression presset is NONE,, after submit this I have AC3 file, and when I make DVD and looking in my home dolby digital system I hear completely diferent disposition,, L - Sound, C-sound, R-speech (very quiet) Ls- sound, Rs-speech,
I was trying and different setup, but I cannot acquire adequate setup,, before I was using AC3 encoder (FCP 4.5), and everything was perfect,
    Thanks,

Sry, your comment is 5 month old, but i have to ask you some thing too:
What headset do you use for the surround sound? I read EVERYWERE that headsets can just output games / music in stereo... for example the logitech g35...
    Hope you can help me

  • AC3 audio encoding problems

Have been encoding ac3 without any problems until recently. Now all ac3 encodes just play back as digital "noise", and the problems exists with default as well as modified versions of the standard ac3 preset.
I'm using latest versions of Compressor and Quicktime. Anyone seen this issue and know how to solve? I'm considering reinstalling Compressor, but that seems to entail a complete FCS2 reinstall...

UPDATE: I rebooted my mac using my backup system disk, which has quicktime 7.1.6 installed. I found that under this configuration my ac3 files could be played back. So it's NOT an encoding problem after all. It seems to be a decoding problem. So next up I'll try reinstalling my current version of Quicktime on the main system disk (that's QT 7.2 of course.) If that doesn't work, I'll have to try reverting to Quictime 7.1.6 I guess...

  • AC3 encoding is impredictable in Compressor 2

The Dolby AC3 encoding in Compressor has some major volume problems. Normally when using Dialog normalization at -31 (for instance in A.pack), the level would be the same as my DTS encodings. In Compressor 2.02 my 5.1 was 4 dB's to soft (looks like it went for -27 instead of -31) and my stereo way to loud.
Is there a way to install A.pack on a system with DVD studio Pro 4 installed?

I've seen one unconfirmed report that A.Pack would not work under QuickTime 7. However, I have A.Pack installed on my Tiger system (which uses QT7) and it seems to be okay. I've not tried any long audio encodings and under Tiger I have not yet burned a DVD with Dobly/AC-3 audio but A.Pack does run under my Tiger/QuickTime 7 setup.
Given that, I would expect that the files output from A.Pack would still work with DVDSP 4. However, I can't confirm that since I'm still using DVDSP 2.
    In Compressor 2.02 ...
Where did you find Compressor 2.02? To the best of my knowledge the latest version of Compressor is 2.0.1.

  • FCPX, Compressor and Dolby Digital 5.1

    Hi all,
I had Final Cut Pro 7 HD and gone over to FCPX.
The Apple Store in Sydney told me to burn a disc with 5.1 surround sound I should export to Compressor. Tried but no sound. is it possible to burn to disc with 5.1 from FCPX?
I've been using FCP for around 10 years but FCPX is a bit of a learning curve. Even with FCP 7 never needed to use compressor as the movies I make are mainly for friends and family but now I have to have a 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack. I understand DVD Studio Pro did that but it's very complicated so please, even though well versed in the old FCP, treat me as a newbie on the new version.
Basically I have footage captured with my new Sony HDR- CX190 and have imported into FCPX. I have some audio I want to dub over the top which is in 5.1 AC3 but the first export only one clip came out, not everything in the timeline and no audio so sent to Compressior and it asked for settings so added them and Compressor said the sound was 5.1 surround and I processed and it burned to DVD but no sound!
You're all probably laughing as it's probably so simple I'm overlooking something that's most likely staring me in the face:
What I need to know is once I have all of my video clips, transitions and 5.1 sound in FCPX - how the **** do I get that onto a DVD or Blu Ray disc that will play all of the footage and in 5.1 Dolby Digital?
Any help will keep me from pulling my hair out!
    Thanks
    Dan

Be sure you have nothing selected in the timeline, especially ranges.  If you have a range selected, only that range will export.
In 10.0.6/7 in the Share menu you can go out either SD DVD or Blu Ray DVD, and if the audio in the timeline is surround sound, the dics should encode that way.  But be sure the timeline/project is set for surround sound.
If this is a Project timeline, go to the Project library, highlight the project, go to the Inspector, the bottom right is a button with a wrench icon.  Click that and verify that "Audio Channels" is set to "Surround".

  • Dolby Digital Encoder Does Not Support Any Encoding Options

Is it just me, or are there no encoding options for the Dolby Digital encoder other than the bitrate?
How are you supposed to select the dialog normalization, dynamic range compression profile, etc. for your audio? Without these parameters set correctly, the audio will not be encoded correctly.

    @jbowden:
    > Adobe licenses the AC3 encoder that Encore uses from Dolby Laboratories. This is stated quite clearly in the splash screen, the box, and other materials distributed with Encore.
I didn't say otherwise. But what they license is the code, not the implementation. Implementations are supposed to be submitted to Dolby for approval, and I'm surprised that Dolby approved the implementation given the oversights and encoding quality.
    > It's a consumer-level encoder, and if you look around this forum I think you'll find very few posts about audio quality, which would seem to indicate that Encore provides acceptable audio quality for most users. Cases with audible clipping can occur if the input signal is too high...keeping your audio signal around -6db should eliminate any clipping.
I don't buy into this whole argument about "consumer-level" and "professional-level". What is the exact difference? Dolby's code is constant across all licensed encoders, so any differences in encoding are the result of an implementation difference, and that's Adobe's fault, not Dolby's.
Audio signals are audio signals. Why do I have to keep my audio from peaking above -6dB with the Adobe encoder? I can take audio whose peaks go all the way up to 0dB and encode it with the Sonic Foundry encoder with no problem -- no clipping, no volume pumping, etc. Not so with Adobe Encore's implementation.
    @Neil Wilkes:
    > As far as Dialnorm goes, again I say it is pretty meaningless in a stereo file.
Dolby's encoding guidelines documents seem to say otherwise. In my readings, it seemed pretty clear that the decoder must have the dialnorm parameter set to the LAeq level of the dialog in the audio regardless of channel configuration.
    > I suppose, although as long as the stereo mix is actually set up correctly there is no need to invoke DRC. The only time DRC would be needed on a stereo file is if the thing is too darn loud.
I have to disagree with this. There is a LOT of material that can benefit from DRC, both soundtracks that contain a large dynamic range (explosions to whispers), and soundtracks that have small dynamic range (speech). DRC doesn't have anything to do with the overall volume level of the soundtrack, but the dynamic range of the soundtrack. If the soundtrack is too loud overall, that's not a DRC problem, that's a level problem.
    > In a properly balanced stereo file, there is no need at all for DRC or Dialnorm. There is no centre channel containing dialogue, just a phantom centre, so what are you going to reference it to, please? How can you attenuate the left/right channels with reference to the centre channel dialogue when there is no centre channel present?
Just because the dialog isn't isolated in the center channel doesn't mean you can't use it to set the dialnorm parameter. Plus, the decoder doesn't attenuate the left/right channels with reference to the center channel, it attenuates the entire soundtrack on playback.
Your quote from Dolby labs is very correct. Following that procedure ensures that the decoder, when it applies attenuation based on dialnorm and applies DRC will work as intended.
    > Additionally, it is not referenced to average RMS either. RMS is close to the correct way to measure, but not correct.
That is true. However, I don't have any equipment to measure LAeq directly, so RMS of a dialog section of my audio will have to do. I do know this: When I applied to Dolby for logo usage on my DVDs, they requested samples of my DVDs for approval of my methods. My first submissions (where I didn't bother with dialnorm & DRC) were rejected, and Dolby sent me a letter telling me such. After I produced further DVDs using my method in my Doom9 post and resubmitted the DVDs to Dolby, they were approved. I can only conclude that my method, while not perfectly accurate, is good enough to qualify for Dolby's rigorous standards.
The bottom line is that I feel I have enough evidence to conclude that the DD encoder implementation in Encore is substandard. If you or anyone else feels it meets your requirements, then use it. But I for one will not allow a single DVD to go out from my company with audio encoded with this encoder.
