Compressor - Droplets and Virtual Cluster

Just learned how to setup a virtual Cluster/Quick Cluster. Submitting a job to the local computer works just fine. When I submit a job to the Quick Cluster, Activity Mon and Batch Monitor do no processing. How do I point the droplet to a Virtual Cluster allowing ?

Bah, this is crazy, today it doesn't work anymore. Yesterday my cluster was showing up in the Dropdown window, and I could submit a batch to it, and it got processed over my virtual cluster.
Today, after finishing the second part of my movie, I tried it again. I didn't change anything to my settings, my machine hasn't even rebooted (just recovered from sleep mode) and my cluster isn't showing up at all anymore. Even the Qmaster menu doesn't show it
Guess, I'll have to wait out until it appears again, or try a few things out

  • Leopard - QMaster and Virtual Cluster problem

    Hi guys,
Up until yesterday I had my MacPro Octo running under 10.4 where I did succesfully set up a Virtual Cluster using 4 instances for Compressor. It worked as a charm and my MacPro was doing it's job perfectly.
Today, I made a bootable backup of my 10.4 install and installed 10.5 using the erase and install options ( clean install ). I installed all my software again and tryed setting up my Virtual Cluster again, using the same settings I had under 10.4. Sadly I can't seem to get it working.
In the QMaster Preferences pane, I have the QuickCluster with Services option checked. For the compressor entry in the Services I have the Share Option checked and used 4 isntances for the selected service. The Quickcluster received a descent name and the option to include unmanaged services from other computers is checked.
I have the default options set in the Advanced tab, ( nothing checked except log service activity to log file and Show QMaster service status in the Menu Bar). I then started the Cluster using the Start Sharing button.
Now I open u Compressor and add a file to process ( QT encode to iPod ), but when I hit the Submit button, my Virtual Cluster doesn't show up in the Cluster Dropdown. If I now leave the Compressor GUI open for 5 minutes, it will eventually show up in the list, and I can pick it. Sadly, picking it from the list at this point and hitting the Submit button makes Compressor Hang.
I checked my logs, but the only thing concerning Compressor I could find is this :

Batch Monitor immediately detects the cluster being active again, but Compressor doesnt, leaving me only This Computer available in the Cluster drop down when submitting a batch.
In my Activity Monitor, I notice that CompressorTranscoder is not responing ( the 4 CompressorTranscoderX processes are fine ) and the ContentAgent proces isn't responding neither.
Does anyone have any clue on what I could check next or how I could fix my problems ?
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    Stefaan

  • INTEGO NET BARRIER CRASHES COMPRESSOR/QM, and says Virtual Cluster not seen

I just discovered via process of elimination that Intego Net Barrier 10.4.5 was crashing compressor. While Compressor was hung ("waiting" in Batch Monitor, would not allow cancel), I tried de-selecting different settings in NB, to no avail... BUT... when I disabled NB completely, compressor un-hung immediately and began processing my submission without a glitch, seeing even my virtual cluster.
    Bye Bye Net Barrier.

I installed the Update Rollup 4 to my SCVMM 2012 SP1 installation, and this is ok now.

  • Compressor outputs pixelated H.264 video when using a virtual cluster

    Hey all,
So for some reason, when I use compressor to convert my HDV .mov file to H.264, if I am using a virtual cluster (8 core Mac Pro5,1)the end product comes out pixelated. However, I just tried again without the virtual cluster, and it came out normal as usual. Anyone know what I am missing? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Whoops, I'm clearly not paying attention. The images are a little small so it's hard to see, but the first image is without the quick cluster, and the second is with the quick cluster

  • Virtual Cluster Does Not Show Up In Compressor

I have a clean install of Leopard and FCS2. All the updates completed and everything is running beautifully except that the Virtual Cluster I setup in Qmaster does not show up in Compressor as an option when submitting. The virtual cluster with 4 instances establishes itself and indicates that all services as 'Idle". The QuickCluster has the same name as the computer under "sharing" even though sharing is turned off. Services are seet as "Shared" not "Managed". Unfortunately, in Compressor the only option available is to render with "This computer". Any suggestions? Thanks, Jim

HI James, just quick suggestion from the airport lounge in Changi Singapore....
step1: using the usual procedure of RESETTING everything (compressor back ground tasks and system prefs/qmaster, option+click start (reset) and then *purging stuff for /var/spool/qmaste*r.... via the finder or trusty rm command.
*step 2:* that you use use QMASTER ADMINISTRATOR to create a cluster of controller and service node on your mac (*not a quick cluste*r).
Check that it is correctly established and 'APPLY' is.
TRy adding a batch to copressor and see if the new cluster appears and that you have the number of instances utilising the cores you specified.
lots of stuff on this forum on this.. just search

  • What are some best practices to work with Compressor 3 droplets and new Compressor 4?

I have purchased Final Cut Pro X / Motion 5 and Compressor 4 from the App Store. My installation of Final Cut Studio 6.0.6 / Motion 3.0.2 / Compressor 3.0.5 has been moved to a new folder "Final Cut Studio". I have started the old version of Motion first as advised in this document.
I just tried to use my old Compressor 3 droplets and i am able to convert as before.
I am wondering what I should do now and what the best practices are
Use the old droplets and stick with Compressor 3?
Import the droplets to a new location to be able to use them in Compressor 4?
Recreate new droplets with similar settings within Compressor 4?
What are the changes I can expect from using Compressor 4?

I've found that it helps to meet with each person in your new org that you'll be supporting. Start with the Eloqua Admin(s) and ask for an overview of standard reports, naming conventions, folder structure, processes, etc. Make sure to do the same with sales operations, too. If you're moving into an admin role ask for the data dictionary so you can study it to understand how the data maps from front end CMS to MAP to CRM.
The next phase would be to meet with field marketing and campaign managers. Ask them about current projects, future projects and how you'll support their success with Eloqua.
And last but certainly not least - process documentation! Ask for all of those things and you'll be rocking and rolling in no time.
Good luck in your new role!

  • Missing Virtual Cluster

I recently installed Snow Leopard and FCS 3 on my Dual Quad and I can't seem to get the previously working Virtual Cluster to show up any longer. I've restarted it and tried resetting it... It just never shows up as an option to submit a batch to from Compressor.
Anyone else having this problem or know what I can do to fix it?

Compressor 3.5 is much easier. My blog (www.bbalser.com/blog.html) shows how easy it is now.

  • Settin up a Virtual Cluster

I'm working on a 2.66Mhz Quad Core and would like to do a couple of things:
First I'd like to be able to monitor the CPUs to see how much and how many processors Compressor is using.
Secondly, if its not using all of the core's how do I create a Virtual Cluster and get Compressor to use all of the cores?
If I accomplished this would it significantly increase the encoding performance? I guess if it does I might upgrade to an 8-core, if it doesn't I'll stay were I'm at.
As always, any suggestions or insight is greatly appreciated.

Yes it will speed you up considerably.

  • Virtual Cluster

Ok so I have a MacBook Pro with a 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo Processor. When I setup a Virtual Cluster (Quick Cluster) using only my computer, I selected two instances for Compressor to use. Since my computer only has two cores is this a bad thing for me to do?
Also, since my computer has the two different graphics cards, would switching to the better card increase FCP and Compressor speed?
    Thanks
    Matt

There are multiple ways to setup a virtual cluster. Some people prefer to use one less core then the total number of cores and others use half the number of cores. Either way If you only have two cores it is recommended to only use one.

  • Droplets and unmanaged services

Is it possible to have a droplet start a job on Compressor 3 and use "unmanaged services on this machine"? The only way I have found to use the unmanaged services to use all the processors is to manually start the job.
    Thanks,
    Scott

Droplets should work the same as if you encoded from within Compressor. What you need to understand is that there is that AVI and MOV are CONTAINERS which can contain any number of different CODECS. Compressor and Qmaster are limited to codecs.
Open your AVI files in Quicktime Player, press Command I to Get Info and post back with the format details of these particular files.

  • Compressor Droplet WON'T Work

I made a droplet in Compressor to easily convert avi files for Apple TV. I selected the Apple TV setting in Compressor, saved it as a droplet on my desktop, but when I drag and drop the video file onto the droplet, nothing happens. The video file just moves to the desktop.
I'm confused because I've used droplets in the past and you just drag and drop them onto the droplet and that opens up Compressor and it starts converting. Can anyone help please?

It could be that Compressor isn't able to recognize the codec inside the AVI file. Can you open the AVI file in Quicktime and open the "Get Info" window and post the specific codec information?

  • Extending Physical Cluster into Virtual Cluster

Hello All...........I have a Physical SQL Cluster cluster.domain.com (Physical_NodeA and
Physical_NodeB) using SAN A.  Physical SQL Cluster contains
three-3 instances.  I intend to move this cluster into my Hyper-V Failover Cluster enviornment and I want to get rid of both Physical nodes (Physical_NodeA and
Physical_NodeB) along with shared storage on SAN A.  I have devised following approach:
    -  Extend existing Physical Cluster cluster.domain.com on
(Physical_NodeA and Physical_NobeB) with shared storage
    SAN A
        - By adding Virtual Nodes (Virtual_NodeC and
    Virtual_NodeD) to cluster.domain.com
    - Creating LUN/s that are shared by all four nodes (Physical_NodeA, Physical_NodeB, Virtual_NodeC and Virtual NodeD) on
    SAN B
    - Moving Instances/Databases location to new LUN/s on
    SAN B
    - Failover to new Virtual Nodes either Virtual_NodeC or
    Virtual_NodeD
    - Evict Physical_NodeA and Physical_NodeB
    - Remove Physical_NodeA and Physical_NodeB from Host Group at
    SAN A
    - Remove LUN/s from SAN A.
Your thought on above procedure would be appreciated.

I am not sure why you want to do all of these.
Why cant you just get the new virtual environment up and running with SQL Server and just migrate the databases to the new cluster?
I think the amount of downtime you incur would be less in this approach.

  • Help with Compressor droplets!

    Hello everyone,
I just created a droplet for Compressor to process a video file, but when I run the applescript, I'm getting the error "Finder got an error: Can't make xxxx.mov into type item."
I tried to manually drag the video file on the droplet and it worked great, any ideas what might be up? Thanks again for any help!

Sorry, here's what I have so far. Seems to compile ok:
    tell application "Finder"
open "movie.mov" using application file "video1.app" of folder "movies" of folder "Documents" of folder "myuserfolder" of folder "Users" of startup disk
open "movie.mov" using application file "video2.app" of folder "movies" of folder "Documents" of folder "myuserfolder" of folder "Users" of startup disk
    end tell
    Thanks again for any help.

  • Compressor droplet issue

    Hey Guys,
My company just upgraded to studio 6.0, including compressor, batch capture, etc. Suddenly our desktop droplets won't work and won't let us look at our settings (which we need in order to ensure our new one matches). Do you have any reason why that might be?

Well I haven't upgraded yet. Do you want to send me the droplets and I'll do screen grabs and zap'em back. My email's in my profile.
That said, you should always clone your startup drive before updating and/or upgrading. That way you can quickly restore your system to it's previous state if necessary. When I have a stable OS/application combo, I clone to my second internal drive so I can quickly restart in the previous configuration.

  • Compressor, Applescript, and Watch Folders

I know this is probably easy, I'm just missing it. I'm guessing somehow one can combine a Compressor Droplet with Folder Actions to create a Watch folder for automating file compressions. Drop a file in, the Droplet processes the file and places the new file in the folder set up when the Droplet was made. Sounds easy right? Can anyone point me to an example script somewhere or let me copy their? I guess all I really need is the syntax to use in the script that will trigger the droplet when new files are added.
I bet a lot of people would appreciate this trick.
    Be the man.

I'm not sure if you still need this, but I wrote the script file two days ago to do this. I needed it so our department can drop(ftp) files into a public folder on our FCP machine and it will compress the files and dump them into a "compressed" folder where people can pick them up. I want to add email notices and other bells and whistles later but this should get you going. Mind you you will have to change some things to fit your file system and folder locations...:
property dialog_timeout : 30 -- set the amount of time before dialogs auto-answer.
on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving added_items
    try
    tell application "Finder"
--get the name of the folder
set the folder_name to the name of this_folder
    end tell
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
open added_items using application file "For iPod.app" of folder "Desktop" of folder "ollie" of folder "Users" of startup disk
    end tell
    end try
    end adding folder items to
You just need to put the above text into the applescript editor and save. Then add it to /library/scripts/folder action scripts/... Then when you "configure folder actions" in finder it will be in the list to add to that folder. You may not need that first line, I left it in there from the "add items to folder" script...
Let me know how it works for you...
