Compressor fails to encode .motn projects

It is vitally important that I can batch encode a few thousand .motn projects directly to mpeg2.
It has been awhile but I remember being able to go directly from motion 3 to compressor 3 for encoding/rendering.
Now for some reason any Motion project I try to encode in compressor, regardless of the target format fails and gives an error that reads : 3X REFERENCE WAS SOMEHOW RELEASED TOO MANY TIMES
The motion project previews in compressor with no problems, it only fails on the encode process.
does anyone have any idea what this is about and what I can do to get compressor to play nicely with motion again.
I tried opening my motion projects directly in quicktime and they played with out problems and I was able to export them to any of my quicktime supported codecs. Unfortunately mpeg2 can only be done via compressor.
I appreciate any help,
thanks,
ryan

You can try reinstalling both Compressor and Motion:

  • Compressor fails with Codec not installed error after 10.5.7 update

Problem: Compressor fails on submission to standard codecs such as H.264, Apple Intermediate Codec, Motion JPEG, etc. Codecs do exist on system as playback from QuickTime is unaffected. This is new behavior as of update to OS 10.5.7.
    Specs: 17" MackBook Pro, Compressor 3.0.5, QuickTime 7.6, OS X 10.5.7
Attempt to resolve: Tried completely uninstalling Compressor/QMaster and reinstalling from the FCStudio disc as per "Compressor: Troubleshooting basics" (Article: TS1888 - Old Article: 302845). This installed Compressor 3.0 which compressed a single mov then began failing on subsequent submissions. Updated 3.0 to 3.0.5 with no favorable results. Submissions continue to fail.
    Any ideas?

From my personal experience, the troubleshooting article which you mention in your original post does not constitute a "full uninstall". There are files missing from that list which are required for a full install.
Using the instructions in the link provided, I've been able to do multiple uninstalls & reinstalls successfully, not only with Compressor & QMaster, but with other Studio apps as well.
However, since there are codecs missing, you may need to do a full uninstall of Final Cut Studio. I personally haven't upgraded to 10.5.7 yet, since I'm currently in the middle of some projects, but it would be worth mentioning that before any kind of software upgrades, all of our system drives get a full backup. This allows us a way to "undo" any bad upgrade.

  • Compressor fails .avi convert

    Hi all,
I'm trying to batch convert .avi files to either Quicktime H.264 or DV NTSC. Both fail, and I can't figure out why.
When trying to convert to H.264, Compressor errors out with: "Quicktime Error: -120". When trying to convert to DV NTSC, Compressor errors out with: "Quicktime Error: 10006".
These error messages must mean something, so why not just output the error in human readable form instead of meaningless codes? Ridiculous.
I should also note that converting these files to DV NTSC succeeded in Quicktime. So Compressor failing makes no sense to me.
I need Compressor to work for me consistently. Why Quicktime would work and Compressor wouldn't is baffling. Don't they use the same engine to convert files?
Any help would be very much appreciated!

    Hi Jon,
I actually got this fixed (somewhat) before reading you post. Thanks for your help though!
I ran Disk Utility, and repaired permissions. Like I suspected, Quicktime 7 barfed up all kinds of errors, including that the user was set to 501 instead of 0 (501 is a temp user, if memory serves me correctly).
I had moved beyond trying to batch convert, and was trying to send a project to Compressor from FCP. Compressor came up with an error stating that I could not save to my destination because I don't have read/write access to it (not true according to Get Info, and aside from the fact that "Ignore ownership on this volume" is selected). When I moved the destination to my Desktop, Compressor started the conversion, failed, and produced a file on my desktop that was immoveable and un-erasable. This file was not seen by the Terminal (I'm fairly handy at the command line). Weird.
So, I restarted, and that file disappeared. Compressor has just finished my conversion, and all is well with the world.
That is, expect that Compressor still tells me that I don't have write permissions to the source folder of my FCP project.
At this point, I'm just glad I could do the conversion (I'm on a deadline), but this is an issue that needs to be addressed. Assuming, of course, that I can replicate the issue.
And more to the point, I'd like to know how Quicktime 7 got so screwed up. I haven't used Compressor in a week, and it worked fine the last time I tried it. I also haven't messed with any settings, etc. so I'd like to know what the heck is going on.
I'm sure I'll be working with more .AVI files in the immediate future, so I'll try to repost with my experiences then.
Thanks again for your help Jon!

  • What can I do when Encore fails to encode during build?

I got the message that my project failed to encode during build, so I went to the Project window and tried to encode it manually. It still came back as failing to encode.
I am afraid I have a corrupt file in PP that is blocking the process.
    How can I fix this?
    Stressed Jim

Hey Bill: Please indulge me with some back ground information for full details.
I got fed up with my project. It was my first project to do. I had to learn everything from how to use a camera, lighting, capturing, editing in PP, (started with PP2.0 and 1 partitioned HHD. I have since updated my computer to 3 internal SATA HHD's with 2 external HHD's. Harm was intent on that. Went from 1GB of ram to 8GB; Xp to Vista to Win7. A new GTX260 video card. I plan on going to 12GB ram and new motherboard and a quad processor. I may need to get another VC that is recommended with my new MB?)
I am saying all this because the same project had to be redone when I updated a lot of this stuff. It was a mess trying to work with the original 2.0 project in XP and then 3.0 in Vista and then in 4.0 in Win7. So I had to start over several times. In all it has been over 2 years with many, I mean many problems. I even got a new camera along the way. You guys were very instrumental in helping me get through a lot of my problems. Most all due to my lack of knowledge about computers in general. There is also a lot to PP. I was so happy when I learned how to cut and ripple delete with 3 steps instead of 4. I have even learned a few shortcuts that makes titling a lot easier. YEA for me.
Needless to say my project was a mess. I did not know about first building a folder for all related sequences. They were all over in Explorer. I had 14 music clips and they were not in a folder; just as an example. You can imagine the mess I had created. My last debacle was to do some house cleaning. (I have a love hate relationship with the Delete butttom.) So I backed up everything on my D: to E: & H:. I then proceeded to delete all the stuff on D: thinking I could just move the project I was working on back to into D: and free up a lot of GB's. (As if that was how you created a seperate workspace from storage and backup.)  It was taking 5-6 minutes to open my project. I was also crashing a lot in Encore; that was my main concern. I had read where crashes were not good on a HD? But what do I know?
This is where I was when I sent you this forum. (Oh, by the way, I was able to successfully burn some DVD's before I did the housecleaning. They have 1 misspleed word and 1 button in Encore menus does not link where I want it to go, but I can live with these minor issues. It is a struggle, but I am working threw it. I put the smiley face, but it does concern me, I am wanting this DVD to be correct. I did not say perfect. I have learned the difference between a silk purse and a sow's ear.
Anyway, like I said, I got fed up not being able to burn a DVD, so I deleted everything having to do with my project except for the raw camera footage, EFX's, and music clips. I just learned by exploring in Explorer I could do that, so every time I started over in the past I had to recapture all my 5 hours of footage. (I used a Canon HV20 camcorder and it is great for my needs.) I found out somehow I had deleted some of the raw footage during my recent house cleaning; however and I can only guess, that is why I could not get Encore to burn a DVD by failing to encode. (But who cares nowww....with a distance closed eye smile.)
Becasue for now, all I have on my 3 HHD's are raw footage in 6 separate folders, as well as my EFX's and music clips in designated folders. That is all that is on my 3 video HHD's, 3 little ol' folders. I now want to start over and do it right this time. This is what I need to know:
    1. How to use 1 HHD for a workspace and the others for storage and backup without messing up my project. Someone mentioned using Project Manager??
    2. I also need to know how to use folders effectively to keep my project organized.
When I burnt my HD project on a Standard DVD going from PP to Encore using Dynamic link, the video turned out great. I can see my finger prints like HD; all the close ups are super clear when watched on a HD TV; except where the camera work was lacking. The face shots at a distance of 4-5 feet are not quite (said with a small huh, drawn out 'q' and face twisted to the right and downward, with a drawn up lip) "huh not q....uite" as sharp as one would have hoped, but way plenty good for an instructional DVD. (Harm doesn't like to hear that.) grrrr... I considered converting HD to SD, but in all, I am very pleased with the outcome of my project using Encore to Burn my HD project to a SD DVD disk.
I have an Epson Artisan 50 ink-jet label printer using JVC VD-R47HPS25 disks which works well together. My next purchase is a 1-3 DVD/CD Duplicator/copier with Copyright protection. All I need is the money. LOL Wife is even OK with it.
Now that you know my life's video history and where I have progressed, or regressed, not sure which, if you know of any good links to help with my 2 concerns, please give me a shout.
    Jim
    Is that detailed enought?

  • Encore failed to encode

    Hello
Using CS5 on iMac, I exported from Première to Encore.
The project failed to encode and Encore crashed.
Wondering where I can find the error log in the Mac (Lion) to see if there's anything specific there and perhaps post it.
I will try another project to see if that works, but for now this is the second crash since installing.

Start by seeing if youtube-dl is working.
You can get the formats the video is available in with:
    youtube-dl -F http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=123456789
You can usually get audio only using
    youtube-dl -f 140 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=123456789
That will be .aac or .m4a audio
You can leave it like that or to reencode to .mp3
    Check if ffmpeg is working.
    ffmpeg -i file.m4a -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k Oufile.mp3
Or if you have a video file that you want to dump the audio from into .mp3
    ffmpeg -i file.mp4 -vn -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k Outfile.mp3
If you get an error about lame then check if lame is installed

  • IDVD failing to encode audio

Help ! I am making a DVD for the high school baseball team and the banquet is next week. I did the same thing 2 years ago without incident. My iMovie is a slideshow of digital photos set to music. When transferring to iDVD, it encodes the menu, encodes the video (takes 2 hours) and then fails to encode the audio. The colored circle spins for a few minutes. The burn circle stops spinning. My laptop (Powerbook G4) spits out the DVD disc blank. I tried taking off all songs expect one that I used 2 years ago without incident. Did not work either. I am very very disappointed. The kids were going to love this. Any ideas ? If worst case scenario occurs, is there someplace (I live in Ann Arbor) I can take the iMovie file to and have them make a DVD ? Any advice is greatly appreciated. I am working with iMovie 5 and iDVD 5. Will it help to upgrade to ILife 06 ? Thanks

I only have 1.21 GB at this time because I
transferred the iMovie to my laptop. Having said
that, the reason I put it on my laptop is that I made
the iMovie on an external hard drive with over 300
GB. The problem first occurred on the external hard
drive (Western Digital). I thought moving it to my
laptop might make a difference. It did not.
iDVD needs to use your start-up hard drive for many things when creating a DVD. You need to freeup at least 10 GB (15 or 20 would be better) for things to work.
My son plays for Huron. We split with Pioneer. I live in A2
but went to ND. Are you still willing to help me ?
Certainly - but since I live near Rochester, NY all I can do is offer written support here in the Forum
Just as a general rule of thumb, OS-X needs something like 10 to 15% of your drive kept free of OS use. So if you have a 60 GB drive, you will need something like 6 GB free JUST FOR THE OS! That's why I said you need to freeup about 10 to 20 GB.
The problem first occurred on the external hard drive (Western Digital)
What is the format on this drive? They usually ship with a Windows format and need to be reformatted to a Mac format to work well with all things Mac OS-X.

The destination is an internal disc with 179gb free. The boot disc has 10 gb free and I've set compressor's presets to NOT copy files to cluster during processing yet compressor fails the job each time even trying one movie at a time, saying my HD is almost full.
Cant work it out? Any ideas?

If your system HD has less than 10% free space it could contribute to odd operating issues.
Click on the preset and look at the far left box near the top of the inspector window. How big does it say the file should be? What was this preset made from?
Could the preset you started with be a factor?

  • Substandard renders and .motn projects that crash FCP.

On rendering out video from Motion (first version) I am warned that almost every object on my timeline is 'too large to render and will be cropped'. I'm working on anamorphic D1 projects and some of the objects it is telling me are too large are things like 720x576 video clips and even 16 pixel high caveats with no effects. I can get a render using the 'export' command in Motion but for some reason these are exceptionally jagged and have no sub-pixel supersampling (I've got anti-aliasing turned on but this doesn't help a great deal and the jagged edge are far too obvious to use for broadcast purposes). I'm rendering Uncompressed 4:2:2 and both project and render settings are upper-field first.
I have tried simply importing the .motn projects into FCP which for some reason manages to render objects much smoother than Motion's native renderer - but unfortunately all of the projects contain particle effects which seem to crash FCP every time it comes across them. Going back to Motion to render these sections is no good as it seems to render particle effects with random jumps and missing frames in them.
Any tips for getting decent quality smooth anti-aliased renders from Motion into Final Cut Pro as I'm not having any luck so far and I've got nine television commercials due for delivery Monday morning - yikes!
    Any suggestions most welcome!
    Cheers,
    Tom

Though I realize Motion 2 isn't available as a separate item anymore, it is absolutely worth getting as far as speed and performance.
I remember thinking that on the same hardware it felt like it was 2x as fast.
Definitely check out the linked Motion Smarts article - it's a great explanation or introduction to the specific problems you can have working with a GPU-based FX program like Motion. This stuff matters - if you can master optimizing your projects by design Motion will be a nice addition to your toolbox.

  • Compressor 2.0.1 fails on encode

    Hi everyone.
I've been having this problem since I upgraded to Final Cut Studio from FCPHD.
    I'm running Compressor 2.0.1, FCP 5, DVD SP 4.
I've used Compressor 4 three times since I upgraded and it failed twice during encode (QT error 0)!
I'm running it directly from FCP 5, exporting a sequence I've edited with two versions of titles. So, they are two sequences, exactly the same media, except for the titles.
I'm exporting MiniDV source material to Compressor sttings I've created (one-pass 7.5 CBR 4:3 29.97 fps) and default DVD PCM audio setting. Usually the audio goes through fine and the encoding fails somewhere into the video encoding.
I was able to complete the first sequence encoding on a second try. I've reviewed it and it plays and looks fine.
When I tried to encode the second sequence last night, I got the same error.
I'm wondering: am I going to have to go though every encoding attempt twice to get things done with Compressor 2? Or is there a bug fix?
Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance!

Yes... Mines not been working in standalone mode for 6 odd months If I export via FCS the Batch Processor will crash out but the rest of it will carry on and finish the job.
What I find interesting is here in my local Apple Store THEIR Compressor crashes as well and has done for some time... staff like to gloss it over though! I think that something major was broken after one of the 'system' or some such updates but as Compressor is a minor application Apple has never bothered to fix it..... my 2p's worth!
