Compressor Help

Alright I'm having an issue with compressor. I'm using the H.264 codec on my Reel that is 1440x1080 Apple Pro Res 422 24p. Whats happening is I'm getting a 4x3 aspect ratio in the finished product when I really want a 16x9.

Set Custom frame size to 1920x1080 that will give you the aspect and size you are looking for.

  • Error when encoding final cut pro x project, will compressor help?

Having a problem trying to export a FCP X project.  As it is exporting about half way through it will come up with this error message:
The Share operation export file has failed.  Quicktime error -50
I noticed in the project library that there is an error icon next to this project and not sure why.
I made a duplicate project and cut it in half to see if that would work and getting the same error message.
How can I trouble shoot this and if I purchased Compressor would that help me export this project?
I am on a tight deadline and this has never happened before, any ideas?

OK, you are talking to a newbie with FCP X...came from iMovie and did a number of projects with FCP X already but don't know the ins and outs of this program. If you could talk me through the steps and where to find Repair Permissions (is that using the disk utility and repairing permissions there?), Would I trash all the Render files here including the folders, will they rebuild?, Where do you turn off the background rendering?
I should mention that I took an older project and exported it to see if it would work and it did, without a problem.  I am now making copies of this project and removing sections to see if I can isolate the corrupt files, if there are any.
FLASH....I just found the corrupt files. The last section I removed seemed to be the issue. I tried to render it again and it worked fine.
Now I will have to go back and see if I can narrow that section down to find the file that is causing the issue.  WOW what a mess. Is there any program that can identify these issues that doesn't cost as much as FCP?

  • Will Compressor help me get a larger video from FCPX to Vimeo?

I have a couple of family videos on FCPX.  After trying to download to Vimeo I figured out the videos are too large, 8:41 Thinking about buying Compressor.   Would that help with the problem?  Thanks in advance.

FCP gives several export sizes for Vimeo sharing – from SD to 1080P. Possibly the 960X540 size may work, if you haven't tried it already.
Compressor does give you more control – adjusting data rate, frame rate and frame size to better determine size–quality trade-offs.

  • Audio popping in flv files from Compressor - Help!

I am getting an occasional digital audio pop in the flv videos i am creating in compressor. The audio is coming from digitized Betacam SP master tapes. The audio levels look good and sound fine monitoring the tape, in FCP, and in Quicktime if i export the clip as a Quicktime clip. But when i play back the encoded flv file i hear the offending "pop". The "pops" don't seem to coincide with a peaking audio or video transition. I am stumped! Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Aaah, I wish I could help! I have exactly the same problem! I was going to post about it, but since there's this workaround, I didn't want to take up bandwidth with a problem that was not a total showstopper.
Indeed. I have stopped doing what I used to do before. Before, I used to select "All" in compressor - the files generated were the video, the aiff, and the ac3. Well after burning a few coasters through DVDSP 4.1 where there was picture but no sound, I realized that I needed to drag the aiff file to compressor again, and use that - at that point everything is fine. So, right now, my workflow is to export just the video from FCP through compressor, let it encode. Then export the aiff separately and encode it to a3 in compressor, then import the video and ac3 to DVDSP for good results. In short, no more exporting "All" from FCP through compressor, it's a waste of time.
But as to why, I have no idea, and I'm eager to hear what folks have to say! Anyhow, just letting you know you are not alone. Btw. my set up is: FCP 4.5 HD, compressor 2.1 and DVDSP 4.1.0... what's yours?

  • Compressor help needed.

Well compressor first of all used to be working just fine. The problem is that now when i do a video in Final Cut Pro5 and export using compressor, the compression takes forever? An hour and a half video exported at 6.2mbps to a .m2v took about 10 hours last time. Im currently compressing it now at 2.5mbps and it seems to be trucking along. Would that jump in mbps really cause it to slow that much? I mean it zips through 50% of the compression and states 14minutes remain but then the clock jumps and compression slows. Things just seem to be buggy between Final Cut Pro5, compressor and then into DVD Studio Pro4. I have downloaded the newest updates but still it is taking forever. Could someone explain if this is normal please. Thank you in advance.

If you are running on a 1.33GHz PowerBook and using the two-pass best quality MPEG2 preset then that sounds about right. Two-pass best quality has always been slow and Compressor 2 is notably slower than version 1.2 (in my hands, 25% to 50% slower depending upon the preset). If you want quick compression times try a one-pass non-VBR (CBR) preset, you might be surprised at how good a CBR encoding can look and the processing times will be vastly reduced.

  • Compressor Help for HDCam Tape Layoff

I have footage that was shot on the RED, graded and output via Apple Color, and now has the following specs:
    resolution: 2048x1152
    pixel aspect ratio: square
    frame rate: 23.98
    field dominance: none
and I need to lay it off to HDCam for screening purposes. The venue has requested
"an Apple Pro Res QT to be laid off to HDCam tape at 1080i/59.94"
What's the best way to get them my footage without it getting mangled in the process?

As noted above, there are 6 versions of "ProRes Quicktime". It doesn't hurt to verify exactly which one.
    Getting it done ....
    Open up Compressor
Select the appropriate ProRes preset in Settings. It can be found in Apple> Advanced format conversions folder.
Copy it and select the copy in the Settings list.
    Go to the Inspector window.
Change the name to something meaningful to you - "Red to ProRes 1080i" would work for me.
Start working through the settings. The key thing to keep in mind is you are turning a progressive 23.98 large raster image into an interlaced 29.97 smaller raster image. You will want to have FRAME CONTROLS turned on to get the best frame rate and image size conversion.
Do some tests with smaller segments to judge time vs quality. Unless there is a decided quality benefit THAT YOU CAN SEE, stay away from BEST. It adds enormously to the time.
Or, find someone with a Kona3 that can do the conversion to 1080i ProRes for you in hardware.
If you have additional questions, post back.
    Good luck.

  • Widescreen Export to Compressor - HELP!!

I've read a few threads about this, but am still having problems getting this to work. I've shot an entire movie in 16x9 format on my DVCAM (Sony PDX10). I imported into FCP 4.5 and set the sequence to Anamorphic. All looks fine on the viewer. However, when I try to export to Compressor, I use the 90 Minute High Quality Widescreen preset - but all i get is the 4:3 version on the preview.
Here's the weird thing: If I select a random clip and put it on another timeline NOT set to Anamorphic, when I import that to Compressor - voila. It looks widescreen as it did in FCP.
Any ideas how to sort this out? I have to get a DVD done pretty quick and this is driving me nutz!!

  • No Chapter names due to Compressor HELP!

When I export a Quicktime from FCP for iDVD it works fine, but I can't burn that because DVD's only burn 4.3GB and this is 10GB video, so I have to compress it via Compressor.
When I put it in Compressor and try and put it back in iDVD it gets rid of the chapter names but shows the thumbnail/scene...
WHY? It makes no sense! I've never had this problem before using Compressor, I'm using QT7 H.264

    otown2k wrote:
Because when I export it from FCP as a Quicktime, the file size is so huge it won't burn in iDVD. So I have to compress it first. H.264 is a good codec. I've never had this problem before.
If you have had issues with iDVD in the past, it hasn't been because the source file was too large; it might be because it was too long.
I did another wedding a few weeks ago, compressed it as a H.264, dropped it in and it worked fine and that wedding was longer. Since when can you fit 10GB on a DVD? They only burn at 4.3GB and replicate at 4.7GB
iDVD does not care about the size of the source file. Two hours of video could mean 1GB of H.264, 24GB of DV, 240GB uncompressed, 72GB ProRes etc. iDVD converts it all to mpeg2 with a bitrate dependent on the running time. So you are not fitting 10GB on a DVD; you are converting the video to a DVD-compliant format (mpeg2) before burning.
H.264 is a poor choice, because it is highly compressed and can introduce compression artifacts. It is a final delivery format, not an intermediate format. By doing so you are transcoding from your source format to H.264 and again to mpeg2. Instead, export from FCP in the native format (ProRes, DV, or whatever it is) and drop that file into iDVD, no matter how large it is. As long as it is less than two hours, iDVD will calculate a bitrate to make it fit.
If you wanted to transport H.264 video on a DVD-ROM, you can certainly do that. But it won't play in a DVD player. iDVD makes video DVDs, which are always mpeg2 (and can also be mpeg1).
I'm sorry that this doesn't address your question about chapters; I can't answer that.

  • Instructions: Create Blu-Ray disc in Compressor with Final Cut TImeline

I searched mightily for simple instructions on how to do this. The Compressor help files are woefully inadequate in providing a simple walkthrough to do this. Burning a Blu-ray directly from Final Cut does not allow one to optimize the conversion like compressor does. So:
    1) Right click your chosen sequence in Final Cut
    2) Click "Share" The Share dialog box will come up.
    3) Choose "Blu-Ray" in the destination drop down in the top-left corner of the Share window (don't forget to choose the destination location of the files at the top of the dialog)
    4) Click "Send to Compressor" in the bottom-left corner
Compressor will open and a job will automatically be created with Blu-ray video
and Dolby ac3 audio. Set options and submit as usual in Compressor

The send to compressor option occasionally creates problems. Most people would recommend exporting as a self-contained movie, then bringing that into compressor and using your workflow from there.

  • How do I convert a Quicktime file into an MPG2 in Compressor?

Every time I try to export my movie as an MPG2 in FCP, it locks up on me.
So I exported the movie as a regular Quicktime file in FCP and now I'm wondering what all the steps are to make the file into an MPG2 so that I can burn it to a DVD in DVD Studio Pro.

Just open Compressor and import the QT file.
Click on the 'Settings' button and choose a preset that matches your source meda format and gives you the compression parameters you want to use.
Click on the 'Destination' buttons for each and tell it where to send the file.
Change the 'Output file name'(s) if you wish.
    Hit 'Submit'
The Compressor Help menu will give you plenty of info on options available.

  • Loop in Compressor

Is there a way to program a video to loop in Compressor and not in Quicktime?  I tried the Compressor help manual and couldn't find anything.
    Just a query.
    Thanks in advanced

I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help. The only encoded auto-play I am familiar with in Compressor is for DVDs and Blu Ray disc (and only Blu-Ray has looping). Videos encoded for the Web can be set to Fast Start, but you still need the Web player to read that.
Hopefully, someone else here will suggest something. If you don't get any further responses, I would try the folks over at the Final Cut Studio.
    Good luck.

  • Set audio on compressor using command line?

Anyone know how to supply the audio path using compressor on the command line?
Running compressor -help shows audio=/path/to/file but it's not too specific on how that looks in the actual command.  I've tried every combination I can think of. Has anyone done this succussfully?
    Thanks

When I try that format I don't get any response at the command line from compressor...it just exits.  Here's my command:
compressor -clustername "Compressor" -batchname "test" -settingpath "/Volumes/theGrill/Resource_Library/Art_Anim/Presets/Compressor/Preview (H.264).setting" -asneededcopy -destinationpath "/Volumes/Scratch/temp/test/test.mov" -jobpath "/Volumes/Scratch/temp/test/Leadership_April_Update/" audio="/Volumes/Scratch/temp/test/Leadership_April_Update.wav"
The other formats I've tried include.  Responses are what is returned in terminal.
    -jobpath "/path/to/sourcevideo.mov",audio="/path/to/sourceaudio.aif"
Response: Parameter error: Invalid Job path: /Volumes/Scratch/temp/test/Leadership_April_Update/,audio=/Volumes/Scratch/temp /test/Leadership_April_Update.wav
    -jobpath "/path/to/sourcevideo.mov" -audio="/path/to/sourceaudio.aif"
         Response: None
    -jobpath "/path/to/sourcevideo.mov" -audio "/path/to/sourceaudio.aif"
         Response: Invalid parameter: -audio
    -jobpath "/path/to/sourcevideo.mov" -jobpath audio="/path/to/sourceaudio.aif"
Response: Parameter error: Invalid Job path: audio=/Volumes/Scratch/temp/test/Leadership_April_Update.wav
    -jobpath "file:///path/to/sourcevideo.mov?audio=file:///path/to/sourceaudio.aif"
This submits, but the output doesn't have the audio.

  • Down Converting DVCPro HD to SD using Compressor 2

We just recieved and installed Final Cut Studio...
Everything that we are shooting and editing is in the DVCPro HD format.
From time to time, we need to Deliver this footage on DVD. With Compressor 2, I understand that you can take the DVCPro HD files and Downconvert them to Standard Definition.
My question is how do I accomplish this?
Do I just load the DVCPro HD file into Compressor, and enter in a Standard Definition MPEG2 Preset, and compressor will do the downconversion?
Thank You in advance for any help!!

Do I just load the DVCPro HD file into Compressor, and enter in a Standard Definition MPEG2 Preset, and compressor will do the downconversion?
Yes, that should work. However, if you don't like the results you may have to try some "tweaks" to the preset. The Compressor help files (electronic manual -- PDF) will have information on this.

  • FCP/DVDSP/Compressor .ac3 Low Audio

Can somebody tell me why .ac3 files come out so low compared to .aif when sent to compressor from FCP, even though I boosted the levels in FCP. I need more level in ac3 format for DVDSP.

In Compressor, duplicate the AC3 (Dolby Digital) preset for DVD then modify the copy this way: in the Audio tab, set Dialog Normalization to -31dbfs (that will leave the audio at the same level as it was in FCP). In the Preprocessing tab, set 'Compressor Preset' to NONE.
These are excerpts from the Compressor Help Files: http://documentation.apple.com/en/compressor/usermanual/#chapter=10%26section=1% 26hash=apple_ref:doc:uid:TempBookID-ReplacedWhenAssociatingWithMessierRevision-9 0863AC3-1007867
"If you enter –31 dBFS: The attenuation is 0 dB (31 dBFS–31 dBFS), and the source audio levels are not affected at all.
If you enter –27 dBFS: The attenuation will be 4 dB (31 dBFS–27 dBFS).
If you enter –12 dBFS: The attenuation is 19 dB (31 dBFS–12 dBFS)."
"Compression Preset: Specifies one of the dynamic range processing modes built in to the AC-3 format. The default of Film Standard Compression should only be used when you are encoding an original mix intended for cinema. In almost all cases, you should choose None."
