Compressor in FCE & FCP quick question

Can I install the compressor from a FCP HD 4.0 disk as a stand alone application. I already have FCE on the computer I need to put a compressor on. If not, is the only way to get compressor through FC Studio?
Thank you
-Jon

Of course you can. in customization. do I get a dumb question award or something...am I the only one here writing to myself...hello...hello...well mr. Kitty I guess I'll never get any friends...

I am sure that for the last few weeks the Final Cut Forum has combined the questions from both FCE and FCP.

  • So You Think Your Computer's Not Powerful Enough For FCE/FCP !!!!!

It's NOT a question - just some sobering thoughts!
How many times do we get worried owners asking whether the Mac they have or the one they intend to get will have enough power to operate FCE/FCP?
So I trawled through the history books - otherwise known as back-copies of Macworld and this is what I discovered.
Final Cut Pro was released in April 1999. At that time the most powerful Macs had the following specification:-
    G3 450MHz processors.
    OS 8.6
Couldn't find the HD size but guess it was around 20GB.
All this power cost over £2,000 !
Now I know that the latest versions of FCE/FCP have additional features, but if we disregard HD processing the latest are not that much different from the original.
So has anyone, even those that buy the puniest Mac-Mini, got anything to really worry about?
    Ian.(Who sets cats amongst pigeons).

I have a 1Ghz, G4 Powerbook w/768MB RAM and FCEHD runs beautifully. I also successfully use DVDSP2, Compressor, Cinema 4d 9.52, AE6.5Pro and RealFlow3. Motion 1 causes some crashes when I try to use particle effects and some AE based plug ins, but it does work for basic stuff.

  • AVCHD-2 quick questions

I know that AVCHD isn't considered a good format to record in with it's GOP and all, but I have two quick questions about it none the less.
    1. Is AVCHD a HDD camera format only, or can it be recorded onto mini DV tapes or P2 cards?
    2. I know that FCP 6 got AVCHD support in 6.0.1, but is there a way of using AVCHD files in FCP 5.1, say with MPEG Streamclip, VisualHub, Compressor, or even Quicktime to transcode the files for 5.1?
    Thanks for the help,
    -Brian

HDV is Long or Short GOP....AVCHD, as far as I know, does something COMPLETELY different. I don't know what that is, but I didn't think it was GOP.
    1. Thus far it is HDD cameras only. MiniDV tapes are used for HDV, and P2 is strictly DVCPRO codecs (25, 50, 100). No camera that I have seen employs a tape or P2 mechanism.
    2. The only way anyone got those files to work (again, AFAIK) was to use the PC software that came with the cameras and extract the video that way, then export it out as QT files from there.

  • Xmas is Coming! Would You Like 50 FREE Video Tutorials for FCE/FCP?

Ripple Training produce some excellent tutorials on CD.
However, they also give away over 50 video tutorials for FCE/FCP.
Many of them are for FCP BUT (most) also apply to FCE.
They deal with each topic in a short and punchy style. I found them easy to follow and learned some useful quick tips.
They are QT movies which can be downloaded so that you can use them whenever you want. (Allow about an hour to download them all - you have to do them one at a time). I found it quicker to download all of them (except for a few dealing with multi-camera work etc.) rather than viewing them on the website to sort them out.
    http://www.rippletraining.com/engine/free_tutorials.html
Hope you find them as useful as I did.
    Ian.

Just a couple of additional points for newcomers:-
    1. The estimation of an hour (or so) to download them all refers to Broadband (ADSL). Normal "Snailmail" internet will take around 10 hours!
    2. To download each lesson choose File>Save Page As. A window will appear saying it will be saved as a QuickTime Movie on the Desktop. Click Save.

  • New Website Offering 10 Very Slick FCE/FCP Plugins.

Gogiangigo from the FCP forum has been developing Effects, Transitions and Generators for FCE/FCP.
These are very slick plugins which should be useful to FCE editors.
The site also has some very professional looking video demos/tutorials showing every plugin in use.
You are welcome to download the plugins free of charge but Gogiangigo will not object if anyone donates a few pennies (or more!) as the site costs quite a bit to run and the plugins take time to produce.
Donations would no doubt ensure that new plugins are developed and added.
I am sure he would be interested in hearing suggestions for new filters but don't ask for an "Instant Auto-Edit Plugin"!

An update to my original posting ............. Apparently gogiangigo had over 700 visits to his site yesterday and some 600 downloads.
In view of the interest shown, he has opened a blog where folk can ask questions or discuss current, new and proposed plugins.

  • Quick question re: Media Management

    Hey..
    quick question from a newbie.
    quick timeline.
I just finished producing a 40 minute corporate video, and its done (my first video) everything is still on my 2nd drive (projects, footage, graphics and everything...
I've already made my client 500 DVD's after using compressor.
Now this project is currently still taking up more then half of my hardrive. I want to get rid of everything but still cover my behind in case down the road, they need more. or they want to add to it and such.
    so my question is...
in addition to backing up to tape and keeping the compressed files on my computer..
If I export using Quicktime movie at the same settings of my final sequence. can I delete everything else? AS long as I keep the QT movie on my computer, is that just as good as the original project? am I able to edit from that in the future if I need to or if i need to throw it into compressor to make streaming video for the web? Is there any generation loss with that?
I know thats more then 1 question.. any help would be awesome... you guys rock! and thanks in advance

If you export a quicktime movie you create a "whole" video. In other words, your transitions, clips and audio will essentiall become one long clip. You will not longer be able to eliminate music from voice for example. It will become one long track. You won't be able to take out transitions such as dissolves or wipes without taking a hunk of video on either side.
Best to delete your media and save your project and tapes. You can re-digitize later. Or buy a cheap hard drive and store it there.

  • What Is The Legal Situation With Upgrades And The Original Copy Of FCE/FCP?

Imagine you have an original copy of FCE/FCP.
You buy an Upgrade and of course use your original serial number to make it work.
You then register the new product with Apple.
Can you then sell your original version and keep your legal entitlement to use the Upgrade?
This question arises from an advert I have just seen on eBay where it looks as though the seller is doing precisely that (if you read their reasons for selling).
    Final Cut Suite
    Ian.

    Hi Ian,
The answer is NO. It would not be legal for either the seller or the purchaser (assuming the seller purchased & applied an Upgrade to his original installation instead of purchasing a whole new copy with its own full license).
In the packaged software world, when you purchase an Upgrade you are only purchasing a license to upgrade from a previously legally owned & installed copy of the software. When you enter the serial number of the previous copy you are identifying that copy. Regardless of whether or not Apple actually tracks the serial numbers, your upgrade license requires you to be the continuing owner of the original license in order for your upgrade license to be valid.
Under the circumstances as they appear in this eBay transaction, the seller would legally lose both their original and upgrade licenses and the purchaser would be illegally installing a previously licensed software package.
The only way to conduct a legal transfer of license would be to deinstall the original software before selling. Of course, that means you would no longer have the software to use yourself.

  • Quick Question: Setting Render File Location

    Hi all,
Quick question. I'm guessing with all the disappointment, the answer will be no, but I fully realize that I could have overlooked something so its worth asking!
In FCP7 (familiar phrase huh?) you could explicitly set a location for render files. I understand that you can save FCPX Events on different drives, as well as your projects, however it appears as if the Render Files are getting saved with a folder which also contains your .fcp project file.
I ask because I like having my project file on my internal so my Time Machine will pick it up when I have it hooked up, but all of those render files take up loads of space and I'd like that on my external media drive instead.
    Is there:
a.) A way to tell FCPX to store Render Files in a different location
    OR
b.) A way to move the Render Files to a different location without screwing up FCPX's ability to recognize the project and load it properly.
If so, great! If not, I'll send it along as a suggestion among with some others. Other than those overlooked technical aspects, I'm kind of digging the UI of FCPX and background rendering is saving me so much time its not even funny.

    Hi Jorgen
I spent a bit of time on this today without any success.
In our studio, it's only me that edits... but I use a laptop and a macpro when things get serious. I have a RAID array tyed to the Macpro, and I access it with my laptop via gigabit ethernet.
I created aliases, and when I opened FCPX, nothing appeared. I also was not able to change the name of events I created, and while it would write the project name and events to the new aliased directories... when I reopened FCPX the events and projects were missing.
I then tried symbolic links via the terminal. No luck. I then checked ownership permissions, and made sure the permissions were ignored for the drive and everything was world readable and writable. No luck.
Have you had a chance to experiment with this yet?
    Thanks

  • Why won't Compressor let me submit? And why use compressor rather than FCP?

Hey I'm using Compressor with Final Cut Hd and a Powermac g5.
So from Final Cut I've gone to 'Export' using 'Using Compressor', for a piece of Quicktime that I want to convert to Mpeg 4. IN compressor, I've set a MPEG 4 conversion, and I've set a destination. But the 'submit' button hasn't come on, and I can't go ahead with the operation. Can anyone tell me the basic things that would prevent me going ahead with the conversion here - no matter how obvious? I'm a new user, and I don't know what I'm doing wrong... any hints?
Secondly, why do I need to use compressor for this - what's the advantage of using Compressor rather than using the QTconversion panel export from Final Cut Pro?
Thanks for your help with these issues - you guys rock!
    Best
    Richard

You may not have enough free hard drive spacein your destination folder or your destination folder is Write protected. I've had that problem and compressor will not always tell you why its not giving you the ok to submit yu kind of have to figure it out. *** far as the benifit of useing it the only rel one is that you can continue to use final cut to do other work while compressor is working, ut that only works if you first export it as a fcp Quick time move and then open compressor and drag and drop the fcp full dv or hdv quick time movie into compressor for compression. affter that you can quite compressor without even saving it and it will continue to work in the background only using what ever cpu power you aren't using allowing you to continue to work on other parts or projects.

  • Report Generation Toolkit Error Quick Question

    Hi,
I created the most awesome LabVIEW report ever at my desk using a trial version of the RGT and Office 2003.  I took this to my production machine and ")@#(&%(*#^%()^!!!"  The production machine has office 2007 and a fully licensed version of the RGT.  Both machines have LabVIEW 8.6.0.  I've read all the stuff about these errors and something about classes and dll's and whatnot's.  So my quick question, is:  Instead of matching the versions of Microsoft Office as recommended, can I just rewrite from scratch the VI that creates this world's most awesome LabVIEW report on the production machine to create the same effect?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi
    Quick Answer: Probably
Slower answer: Microsoft changed a lot of things behind the scenes in Office 2007, but the Report Generation toolkit version 1.1.3 supports Office 2007 so you should be good to go. Depends on what functions are included in your VI. Liek the read me says "Several default settings in Microsoft Office 2007 differ slightly from previous versions. Reports you generate using Office 2007 might look different than reports you generate from other versions of Office because font sizes, cell sizes, and so on, differ."

  • Compressor 2 with FCP 5.1 workflow

I've been reading about using Compressor 2 with FCP 5.1 and have been a bit surprised by some of the following suggestions:
These are from Larry Jordan's website:
"Compressor 2 has problems with both motion estimation and 2-pass VBR. If you are using Compressor 2 make sure to select 1-pass VBR Better and set Motion Estimate to Better. Using Best settings creates very poor video.
There is a lot of talk on the Apple discussion site that 2 pass VBR gives artifacts, especially on transitions and is generally to be avoided.
To compress the file in Compressor, DON'T use "Export to Compressor" in FCP -- it doesn't work reliably. Instead, open Compressor, then drag the file into Compressor and adjust settings.
In their effort to tackle the problem of overshooting data-rates in C1, Apple seems to have ruined the quality of 2-pass VBR encoding to some degree. I've seen quite a few cases now where 2-pass VBR doesn't look as good as the simple 1-pass.
The new version of Compressor has technology in it that is not duplicated using QuickTime conversion.
I have never been comfortable with exporting using QuickTime Conversion. For one thing, it automatically down-samples your movie to 8-bit. For another, it will not be as good a quality as Sorenson Squeeze for the web, or Compressor for DVD. Third, Apple removed the MPEG-2 compression option with the release of QuickTime 7. Finally, the codecs it contains, while adequate for home use, are not up to professional standards either in terms of file size or image quality."
So, from what I gathered from Larry's website...
Use VBR 1 pass instead of VBR 2 pass for best quality
Use Motion Estimate Better instead of Best
Compressor offers better quality compression than Export>Quicktime Conversion
Don't use Export>For Compressor from FCP, instead export a FCP reference file from Export>Quicktime and use that in Compressor.
    What do you think?
    Thanks,
    Richard

Well, different "experts" with slightly different views.
This from hanumang's response to Jerry Hofmann over in the FCP discussion forum:
    FCP unrendered to Compressor 2?
hanumang, have you seen a quality difference using the compressor method?
    Jerry
In my experience, yes, there is most definitely a difference in quality.
For sake of completeness, when it comes to exporting for DVDSP, this is how I'd break it down:
File > Export > Using Compressor on unrendered timelines in FCP. The best way to do things with FCP & Compressor - especially true if (as mentioned) you're working in some compressed format like DV and doing lots of filters, motion effect and compositing within FCP. In my experience, color correction comes out much cleaner on DV-sourced footage.
On a 1-10 scale, with 10 being the best that Compressor outputs, this method is a 10
File > Export > Using Compressor on rendered timelines in FCP. While inferior to #1, this tends to work better on high-motion footage that needs to be encoded at a low bit rate (which I'd consider 5 Mbps or lower) than #3 because of the frame-by-frame processing. Also, transitions tend to come out better (again, at lower bit rates).
    I'd rate this method a 7 out of 10
File > Export > QuickTime Movie with DVD Studio Pro Markers, then import into Compressor 2. While this rates at the bottom, in many cases it's hard to distinguish the output from #2 & #3 unless you're encoding at a 5 Mbps or lower bit rate
    I'd rate this a 6 out of 10
In terms of encoding times, if #3 is my baseline, #2 takes about 2-3x as long. #1 takes about 4-5x as long as #3 for me (depending on the level of complexity).

  • Two quick questions about Library after moving beginning on a new computer

    Hi there,
I just moved from Windows to Mac, meaning I had to move my iTunes library from the old PC to my new MBA.
Just a couple of quick questions.
    1. When I started iTunes on my new Mac, in the preferences I directed the media folder to the folder with all my itunes music/podcasts etc, and then I imported the Library XML file.  Is this incorrect? Should I have imported a different file? Should I have used the itl file instead?
If so, should I delete the library and start again?  (if this is the case, please suggest the best way of doing this without affecting my media)
    - a kind of sub-question to this one:  some of the media files arent showing up in the iTunes library, but they are in the media folder on the ext HDD.  Is there a way I can find out which ones havent been recognized by iTunes?  Whats the best way of getting them in to my library?
    2. Pretty much half of my podcasts have not been loaded in the new iTunes.  The ones that havent were ones that I subscribed to on my iPhone, whereas the ones that show up in iTunes were ones I downloaded from iTunes.  When I connect my iPhone and sync it with iTunes, will those podcasts show up in iTunes?  Or is there a risk that they will be deleted from my iPhone?
    Cheers,

The .xml is lacking some information such as ratings, date added, and play count.  Using the .itl includes this information but cannot be imported using the method you did.
A complete library is everything in the iTunes folder.  By using the method you did you left the artwork behind in the artwork folder on the other machine.
Selecting the media folder in preferences does not get iTunes to recognize the media.  All it does is tell iTunes to start storing new media in that location.
Using the method I outlined nothing will be missed (with the exception of WMA) because you aren't rebuilding your library, you are using the one that already exists.
You don't have to re-copy everything as long as you get the stuff you missed and re-assemble it all as it was before except not on the Mac.

  • Quick question re select-options

    Hi
I am relatively new to ABAP but have a quick question:
I need to create a select-options which does the following:
    1. Allows ONLY "equals" signs
    2. Disallows intervals
    3. Disallows the use of ranges in the multiple selection box.
    4. Allows multiple individual selections.
I can achieve most using the following:
    select-options s_knvh for knvh-kunnr no intervals.
However, this still allows ranges using the multiple selection box, and also allows the "not equal to" option.
Adding the "no-extension" syntax simply removes my ability to use multiple individual entries.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • A quick question about WebDynpro SLD and R/3 with concurrent users

    Hello ,
I have a very quick question about Webdynpros and SLD connecting to an R/3 system, when you configure a webdynpro to connect to an R/3 system using SLD, you configure a user name and password from the R/3  for the SLD to use. What I would like to know is when I have concurrent users of my webdynpro, how can I know what one user did in R/3 and what another user did? Is there a way for the users of the web dynpro to use their R/3 credentials so SLD can access the R/3? Like dynamically configuring the SLD for each user?
    - I would like to avoid leaving their their passwords open in the code ( configuring two variable to get the users username and password and use these variables as JCO username and password )
    Thanks Ubergeeks,
    Guy

    Hi Guy
You will have to use Single Sign On to achieve this. In the destination you have defined to connect to R/3 , there is an option to 'useSSO' instead of userid and password. This will ensure that calls to R/3 will be with the userid that has logged into WAS. You wont need to pass any passwords because  a login ticket is generated from WAS and passed on to R/3. The userid is derived from this ticket.
For this to happen you will have to maintain a trust relation ship between R/3 and your WAS ,there is detailed documentation of this in help files. Configuration is very straight forward and is easy to perform
