Compressor in unversal version

I've been told for a while about the "Artifacts" that compressor creates and was wondering if this might not be a problem with the universal version run on a Macbook Pro
Thanks

Jeff,
The artifacts are a result of VBR in version 2.0.x of compressor. You'll see these in dissolves.
In 2.1 (UB) they fixed this.
But if you want the MPEGS you're burning now to work - just switch over to CBR compression.

Please help me to unstall this new version, which i thought was just some "minor fixes" but turned out to be a really bad new version...

Hi , I'm curious what your reasons are that Compressor.app V4.1 is a "really bad version".. (a release me thinks)
Is there some functionality missing in V4.1 from V4.0 that yu were relying on?
Falling back to previous Compressor.app Release V4.0 ITSELF...
yes this can be done. simply reinstate with Time Machine.. however.. ....
    so some considerations .
its possible that some of the new PRO APP components that have been added from FCPX 10.1 might cause soem troublesome issues....
there's many frameworks extensions, bundles etc to consider . THey point to each other and to other applications is they are installed.
If you rely on SHARE MONITOR.app then this has been moved INSIDE and deliberatly hidden in the new flavour.. because monitoring is now in the Compressor.app V4.1 - much better and quite reliabel ythan SHARE MONITOR.app.. so you'll have to restore this
look into your current use of QMASTER. You'll have to research this if you use this. "Apple Qadministrator.app" is removed...
    might me tricky and troublesome.
post your results for others to see.

  • Compressor not opening / new version not functioning

Hi folks- This is a stumper for any of you non-Intel chip users.
Short version: A new version of Compressor was installed on my G4 recently , which doesn't function properly. I tried uninstalling it, and reinstalling an older version, but the older version doesn't open.
Long version: I'm a professional videographer, and use FCP (Studio 1, 5.1) on a regular basis, frequently using DVD Studio Pro (4) for authoring DVDs, thus using Compressor (my last version was 2.3) as an intermediary.
For an unrelated project, I recently purchased Logic (8.0.2), which during installation also upgraded a few other Apple softwares in the process, including an upgrade to Compressor 3.0.3.
Unbeknownst to me, the Compressor 3.0.3 doesn't work on my machine properly, I'm guessing because it's an older machine. I opened up Compressor today for some routine work, to discover a warning that said:"The installed graphics card does not support the OpenGL features recommended by Compressor."
This warning still allowed me to open the program, but when I loaded up several files for compression, it gave me a warning, saying "Each target assigned to a job must have a setting and destination" EVEN THOUGH every item did indeed have both a destination and two settings. Hmmm...
So, I figured that since Compressor 3.0.3 wouldn't work correctly, I would uninstall it, and reinstall my older version off the FCP Studio disc. But when I did this, version 2.1 would NOT open at all on the machine. I could click the application all day long, but it won't open. Hmmm. I tried upgrading 2.1 to 2.3 through Apple's Software update, but the 2.3 upgraded to the 3.0 again. Arghh!
    I'm either left with an un-openable 2.1 or a non-functioning 3.0. Any suggestions, recommendations?
    -Chris

    Hi Alberto-
Thanks for the reply, and the help. I was indeed dragging my settings onto the job itself (rather than the empty window), so I knew that wasn't the problem per se. But I'm so glad that you had within your previous post the URL to the Compressor Tutorial. Because at the very bottom of the tutorial page, I found exactly the problem I was having.
It's some strange quirk with Compressor 3--sometimes when you drag your settings onto the job, it still leaves the first line as a destination with no setting. That's what my machine was doing. It's an odd bug they should work out--and you can see what was happening on the bottom of the tutorial page you sent me.
Even so, I wasn't aware of this last night, so I had found an older support page about how to uninstall Compressor 3 (deleting files from the library folders & such--frameworks, receipts, et all), so I went ahead and did that, then reinstalled my Compressor 2.3 from scratch, and things worked well after that.
For the time being, then, I'm back to Compressor 2, but now I know that when I reinstall Compressor 3, I have to look out for that problem, and I'll know how to work around that odd quirk.
Thanks so much for your help, Alberto!!!

  • Compressor 4 will not open and I cannot purchase an update

Compressor will not open on my computer because " you cannot use Compressor with this version of OS X."  I am using OS 10.9.4. I cannot find a software update for Compressor but the App store offers a recent version to buy. When I attempt to buy it, it is says that  I "already have a copy installed. Choose Software Update from the Apple Menu to check for available update." It does not appear as a software update.  I am at a loss for a solution.

So the App Store "sees" your copy of Compressor on your system. However, I don't know why you would also get the "cannot use" error. AFAIK, all versions going back to Compressor 3 should work.
I would download an app called FCS Remover and use it to trash the app and related files.
Then download and install a fresh copy.

  • I can't find my serial number for the new Compressor that I got from the app store

ive been trying to export a final cut file  to a .mov. i keep getting a codec error and recently got compressor however when i try to export using compressor it asks for a serial number that i dont have because the app store never gave me one.

Compressor 4 does not give a serial number, it only runs on Mac's that are "authorized" for your iTunes/App Store account.
If it's asking for a s/n, sounds like you're launching an old, unregistered Compressor 3.5 version.  Launch from the Applications menu, not from the Dock.

  • Exporting in Compressor VS. exporting in FCP

    Hey guys,
I've noticed that when I send a sequence for exporting through compressor it normally takes almost as 10 times longer for it to export compared to when I export directly in FCP. Why is it doing that and what can I do to make compressor export as fast as FCP or at least faster than how it is right now? I installed 8GB or ram on my iMac because I thought that would help but I guess not.
    Thanks

Exporting using the Export QuickTime Movie command creates a clip using the settings selected and the render files generated by FCP. From a fully rendered timeline, even a self-contained movie can be output rather quickly.
Exporting using the Export Using Compressor command causes FCP to disregard the render files and re-render every frame in the timeline using the source footage and all applicable effects and filters. This can under some circumstances create a higher quality clip for Compressor to work with. The downside is that it takes a great deal of time and does not support all third-party filters. Another issue is that high quality .mov file is output for "insurance", so if Compressor fails or if you need to create another version of the timeline, you have to go back to the timeline and export again.
Many editors use a workflow that includes an Export QuickTime Movie to create the "insurance" clip, then load it to Compressor for whatever versions if the clip are needed (for example, MPEG-2 for DVD and H.264 for web distribution.) I have no data, but most editors feel that this workflow is substantially faster and involves less risk. The final upside is that FCP is not tied up for extended periods doing the export.

  • 16x9 HD FCP Quicktime Export to 4x3 with Letterbox in Compressor

Okay I'm sorry if this has been posted on here, but I've searched a bunch of post and no one seemed to answer this the way I need it done.
First I have a 16x9 HD file that was edited in FCP and rendered out to a "Quicktime Movie" (the one that renders it out to your timeline specs with no compression).
I then want to take this file and put it in Compressor. Because I want to give Compressor the best version of the file. I now want to render out a Quicktime H.264 file to 4x3 with a 16x9 letterbox. Meaning I DO NOT WANT TO CROP the image, but rather keep the 16x9 aspect ratio using black bars above and bellow the video to deliver a 4x3 SD video file.
I've played with a variety of settings and have had no luck. I
I've used the "Geometry Tab" and played with "Source Insert (Cropping) and Padding, but it always distorts the image.
I also have tried the "Letterbox" option in the "Filters" tab with no luck.
I find it hard to believe that this cannot be done in Compressor. So if someone could please walk me through this in Compressor I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for reading!

I did change those settings, but the section in the geometry tab that I need to change is still grayed...
Yes but the setting had changed as need right?
and the preview window shows the dimensions still at 16x9.
Switch between source settings and preview settings view (using the two buttons at top right of the preview window) and it should refresh the preview display correctly.
I don't understand why I things have to be grayed out. I wish I could have full control over everything.
Am not conversant enough with Compressor to answer as to the why Stew, it may be that it really is possible to enable the setting by some specific method ... but I appreciate your point that the controls as they appear to exist are not intuitive in this regard, display controls for frame size but making you switch to another tab to actually change those settings is bizarre ... but nonetheless you DO have the control over these settings, and that's the main thing.

  • Compressor 3 Crashing at startup

    Hello!
I just installed FCS2 and everything went fine until Software update installed the x.0.1 versions.
Now, Compressor 3 Crashes everytime i try to start it.
Info reveals it's still version 3.0. The rest of the suite works fine. I downloaded the manual 3.0.1 update but it won't install, saying my computer doesn't need the update.
I deleted Compressor and all components i could locate and tried to reinstall from the DVD with no success. The only thing accomplished was to loose the Motion format templates :(((( As far as i could tell, there's no was of installing just Compressor... it basically reinstalls all apps over and over again. I did it twice.
Can i somehow force or trick the manual 3.0.1 install to update?
What do i need to remove to completelty get rid of any trace of compressor 3 and attempt a new reinstall?
    Anyone can help? Thank you,
    Andrei

OMG! so, I'm not the only one having this issue... I found a way to fix this without completely wiping out FCS2 or the hard drive.
APPLE PLEASE GIVE US A DECENT UNINSTALL OPTION IN OSX! (or at least for your applications) because this issue could have been so much easier to solve.
Unfortunately, neither the Apple guide for deleting Compressor (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302845), nor AppZapper identify all related files & folders. So, delete Compressor using either one of the above methotds and...
...There's one more thing: Frameworks.... delete "COMPRESSOR.FRAMEWORK" from: ~/LIBRARY/FRAMEWORKS/COMPRESSOR.FRAMEWORK (~ mac osx hard drive)
After deleting all these i reinstalled FCS2 (Applications only). Compressor was still not working but this time I could manually run the 3.0.1 updater, finally rendering Compressor 3 usable.
i guess that the automated software update failed, leaving compressor halfways between version 3.0 and 3.0.1
This is the first time this happend after a software update, but i think it might be a good idea to install updates manually.
does this fix work for you?
PS: Now, I'm having a problem with Motion 3... the Project presets have disappeared. Does any of you know where I cand find them, how can i put them back? thanks!

  • I already have compressor. Do I have to pay for the upgrade?

I am trying to compress a film to post to youtube and the tutorials are all showing me how to use compressor with later versions with much different GUI's. Do I have to pay to upgrade from my existing version to the latest version. I paid too much for this MacBook Pro for that to be true.

If you have Compressor 3.5, moving to C4 will cost you $50. If you have C4.0.7 you can update to C4.1.1 for no cost.

  • How to choose between CBR and 2-Pass VBR ?

    Hi,
I know alot of virtual ink has flowed about this topic, but I couldnt find the answer I need.
I'm compressing an 83minute feature film to DVD. Source material is 10bit Uncompressed YUV from PAL DigiBeta, sent directly from FCP to Compressor. Compressor is at version 2.0.1, and all ProApp and QT updates are applied.
Compressing at a CBR (ie: 1pass) with a data rate of 7.4Mbps gives a .m2v file size of about 3.3GB and takes about 3hours.
Compressing at 2-Pass VBR with a max data rate of 7.4Mbps gives a file size of about 3.9GB and takes 12 hours+.
Shouldnt the two pass be smaller given the same max data rate?
When I compare the two visually, I cannot tell any difference between them. I'm looking at areas with alot of motion, or with fine detail, or camera movement, but they look about the same.
How to decide which to use?
    Many thanks....

    Hi There
CBR compression is generally better quality - especially out of Compressor 2 - but usually a higher file size that VBR - can't explain your result there. Check fades, dissolves, small text and camera movement for comparsion between the two mpegs. If you still can't tell the difference then use the bigger one if you have the room, if you don't use the smaller one. If the larger file is better but you're worried about disc space then build your disc using the lager one anyway. If after your created the VIDEO_TS file it still too big use DVD2ONE or DVD Remaster to shrink it back down - I doubt you'd see any visiual difference.
    Hope that helps
    Cheers

  • HDV to Mpeg-2?

I am working with HDV 23.98 progressive footage in Final Cut Pro. Its final output will be an SD DVD.
I exported my sequence to compressor for a Mpeg-2 Widescreen SD (60 minutes) output. Next, I am imported to DVD Studio Pro for the build.
I simulated the DVD player from the Video_TS folder after the build, and I guess it looked pretty good.
Is this a wise choice to output an HDV sequence to compressor for a Mpeg-2 SD encoding? Would the quality be better if I made a QT movie of the sequence, THEN exported to compressor for an Mpeg-2 encode?
It certainly saves time to just output the sequence rather than building a movie, first. I just wondered if skipping a step would degrade the quality.

Thanks for the link. Two quick questions, though.
1)Does the "doubling of lines" still exist in FCS 2, with the update to the software? I know when this method was created, the Final Cut Pro and Compressor were earlier version.
2)IS the method for progressive footage? During the tutorial, it says that "a channel blur is applied, because it leaves interlacing intact." My footage is not interlaced, so I was wondering if this only applied to interlaced footage?

  • Bad quality in dissolves for DVD project

Hi, I've been having a lot of trouble with this particular project. It's a DVD project that I can't seem to get right as the dissolves are coming out terribly. The dissolves come out very slow, grainy and a little pixelated/distorted.
METHOD USED: I used to export straight from FCP (version 5.0.4) to Compressor (version 2.0.1), but I've been exporting using File/Export/Quicktime/Make Movie Self Contained/use Current Settings, then putting this file into compressor.
Firstly, are these the correct settings above to use to then import into Compressor?
Secondly, the settings I'm using in Compressor are - 16:9 PAL 90 min best VBR, two pass/bit rate was 6.2 - 7.5 and I didn't change any other settings in there. I choose dolby audio AC3. The project is 60 mins in length and I want to look as good as possible for the client.
(out of interest - when I'm doing a quick burn for a client review using File/Export/QT/movie NOT self contained/ then burn it using toast - it comes out fine - the dissolves are as they should be)
After Compressor I'm using DVDSP to build the project with chapters etc. I then use the Build then Burn to complete the master onto DVD. Are these steps the best to use?
The bad dissolves happen on both stills and video. On one particular section i knew had a bad dissolve from a previous burn, I put compression makers and it still looked really terrible.
I hope you can me help me with the right process needed on this. It's really stressful having problems with this on a regular basis.
    Cheers
    margie

First, People did report problems with vbr encodes in compressor in earlier versions of compressor. not sure at what point this was fixed, but try doing a cbr encode and see if it's better. Do a short section to test rather than encode your whole project.
Second, you should be judging this on a dvd player and video monitor rather than on your computer screen unless of course your end user will be viewing on a computer.

  • Best Compression for 1440 x 1080 HDV

I have a short film, around 13 minutes long, which I've recently completed. It was filmed in 1440 x 1080 24fps in HDV. What compressed video format would produce the highest quality "lossless" compression of the film? I'm planning on using the video file as my highest quality master copy –besides the FCP file itself. Thanks.
    Message was edited by: Hadjimurad

It all depends on many things, including the running time. (Which camera did you use, I am assuming it is 24P?) Also I am guessing you want to put this on DVD?
Generally you will need to calculate the rates you can encode to make the video fit
    [Rate Calculations|http://dvdstepbystep.com/faqs_7.php]
Keeping mind issues of how rates can affect the DVD
    [How Rates Affect Playback|http://dvdstepbystep.com/faqs_7.php]
Not sure if you are targeting SD (PAL or NTSC) but the video needs to be encoded to m2v which is a compressed Codec (HDV is also).
Compressor (the newest version) and bitVice both do good jobs in creating m2vs off of HDV. In Compressor the frame controls willl help produce better results though it can take longer to encode.
Here is a good thread discussing 24FPS and what is happening
    [24P Issues |http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3943775&#3943775]
I would probably export the movie as self-contained to start (not sure if there are alot of color corrections etc that need to be conformed and that can take time) and run that through the encoders, tweaking the settings.

  • HELP! Cannot Compress Footage to Single Layer DVD...

    Here's my problem.
I cannot compress footage to single layer DVD. I'm trying to make a DVD with motion menus and a full length feature. TRT 1 hr 47 min 3 sec. I compressed the video and audio using compressor after it did not fit on one single layer DVD the first attempt. The file sizes of the newly compressed video and audio are adequate to fit on the 4.7GB DVD but after importing the into DVD Studio Pro 4 (DSP4) the disc size comes out to 5.1GB. After DSP4 does its own encoding the file sizes double. I cannot figure this out. Please help.

AS per David suggestion, get yourself on A.Pack and convert your audio to Ac3.
a link to explain how to use A.pack for a dvd project (providing that you have A.pack still, otherwise you will have to use Compressor, depending what version of the suite you have.
Still this link will help you both:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/Tutorials/ProV1/FCP.multi-channel.htm
Depending on your version of Compressor, you may have A pack or you may not...
An AIFF File could increase your project by a gig...
There shouldn't be any problem in fitting that size project on a single layer project...
