I'm using a MacBook Pro 10.6.7 version 2.66 GHz core 2 Duo 4GB 1067 MH. I'm not new at this. I re-installed FCP successfully. I trashed the preferences. Please help.

Do you have any filters applied to your clips?
This happened to me before, I accidently had applied a broadcast safe filter to a color matte that was black....
I figured it out by duplicating my sequence and deleting items from my timeline 1 by 1 until I was able to export a reference movie.
Anywho, export again, this time with "self contained" movie selected.
Then try to import to Compressor.

I press the power button, and it dings per usual. Then the first gray screen pops up and it starts spinning. Then a progress bar appears. It fills about a quarter of the way, and then the screen goes black and the computer shuts down.

The progress Bar appears when your Boot drive will not mount. It runs a task similar to Disk Utility (Repair disk) and shows you the progress. It is normal for the bar to only fill less than a third of the way.
If your Mac then shuts down, this is because the Repairs could not be completed. Your Boot Drive (either the mechanism or the contents) is in trouble.
Try booting to Recovery Mode, and attempt to make the repairs form there.
If no joy, buy a drive that could replace your Internal drive, and an enclosure to place it in while you Install a new copy of Mac OS X form fundamental sources. Making a complete copy of a drive you know to be damaged is not generally helpful, but may be needed later if you do not have a Backup.
The advice to erase your drive should be ignored. It was invented long ago, when drives cost US$1000, and the prize was getting the drive mechanism working again.

Should I leave 1 or 2 cores for other applications?
RAM allocation per background CPU is defaulted set to 3GB
Also for Adobe Media Encoder: in preferences under Video Rendering /Rendere it is set at Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL) is that the best config for this computer?

The best settings depend on what you are working on. Here are mine for a nearly identical system:
It's usually best to keep memory blocks in 4GB blocks. If my workflow is more in other apps I'll switch out other apps to 8 gb if things start to slow down. Because of my usual project settings I keep MP turned off on this machine, but for some projects I'll turn it on. If you decide to experiment to MP then keep an eye on the Actual CPU's that will be used and make sure the numbers add up. Other applications and Actual Cores should add up the the total in your system.

Tom is right. Codecs are shared software system-wide ("Core Video"). If you cannot find the option with any software (such as MPEG Streamclip), you won't find it in Compressor or FCPX either. The Quicktime ProRes codecs is part of the FCP menu > "Download Additional Content" you need to make after install FCPX (or Compressor.) These "pro video" codecs are part of all "ProApp" licenses for video related software from Apple (QT7Pro, Motion, Compressor, Final Cut, etc....) Most articles/tutorials you read by "long time" users are apt to assume the reader has been working with pro-video on Macs since the days of disk installs (like they have). In those days, the installation of those codecs wasn't even really an option (well, it was if you did a custom install - but who *didn't* install all available codecs??), it was automatically installed with the main software. Since the "App Store" venue... things have changed somewhat.

It can be a long download, so keep trying. My first download was at 3 am Cupertino time and took less than an hour. The second took close to three hours one evening.

Thanks. I have been using iTunes since its inception and have never had a problem...I'm using the latest version. The progress bar is the bar that moves when you're playing a song..it just won't start when I double click on a song,..have tried quitting, rebooting etc but nothing works. I've got older systems, ones that can't handle CS6, and a budget too low to purchase a new system and your software even with a student discount. Is there any way to use an update version? I wish that all of the "Creative Suite[s] products [would] continue to be available for sale via ESD on Adobe.com"(Adobe)*, or at least most of them. I understand the need to update, and that the industry is difficult with competitors, but I wish that all of your software versions were aimed towards 32 bit systems too. There are plenty that can keep up with the operating System updates, and I only wish that you would have kept at least CS5 on support instead of shutting it down. So, if you won't accept support of older products, can you help me with this? Or is this beyond any of the software contracts that is in the company's power? I appreciate any assistance in this matter.

You can only buy CS6 and CC. Otherwise you will have to find someone willing to part with his license and run a license transfer. Though, quite frankly this doesn't really make sense. You can buy cheap laptops withe a suitable 64bit version of Windows 7/ 8 for 300 Euros. The money saved could easily be invested in a CC student plan rather than possibly trying to find an overpriced older version with the risk of getting scammed... Otherwise you can use the trials of course, but that's about it.

You can try trashing the preference file. Then kill the NotificationCenter.app.
The preference file is stored inside your Library folder. This is the complete path+preference file's name
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.notificationcenterui.plist
To kill the NotificationCenter.app, open Activity Monitor. Using the search box, type noti. You'll see the Notification center listed below. Select the line and click on the kill button
Force Quit, when asked. Notification Center reopens automatically.

You can use the same, i.e. you can access the same mail account from both devices and keep them in sync if you like.

I have this identical problem. For a while my group texts didnt show up on my ipad. Then one day they did, maybe everyone in the group started using the same os version or something. Ever since my first reply to the group there have been complaints of multiple threads. I can not find a pattern for when my group text's decide they want to create a new thread. (it doesnt happen every time) Everyone in the group has deleted the thread, we've all toggled imessage on/off etc. There still hasn't been a solution.
