Compressor Issue

Lately I've been experiencing issues while trying to export from compressor. The issues lies in the fact that when the process begins to export a file it severely affects my whole system for example it will not tell me an estimated length of export it now says "unkown" and then begins to freeze up and crash but when I close the application it acts as though its still open affecting all other applications. I have to force quit and restart my whole system to get it functioning normally. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

First thing to try is [Compressor Repair|http://digitalrebellion.net/compressor_repair.htm].
Also check out the other Final Cut Studio tools on the site, it is an invaluable resource for editors and the author of those applications is a regular on these forums.

  • FCS Compressor issues - Quartz Extreme not loading on headless XServe

    Hi,
I am running FCS on a OS X Leopard Server Intel XServe...installed a Quartz Extreme GPU (an old stock nVidia 7300 taken from a Mac Pro) to meet the specs. Everything worked fine. However I want to run the system headless - it is an XServe in a rack! Only problem is that without a monitor attached to the GPU, the XServe fails to acknowledge the existence of the GPU. Quartz Extreme does not load. Compressor will not launch if opened (explaining that I have no GPU!) and the automatic encodes from FCS come out as 0Mbyte .mov files. I admit I already knew about the issue of Final Cut Studio apps not running on a headless machine, even with a GPU installed. I just assumed Apple must have fixed this one for FCS because it is server software....I am guessing plenty of people must actually run FCS on headless machines....what's the trick to getting encoding to work?
    Thanks!
    Daniel

Depending on your xServe, you can just stick the dongle in the back and it should activate Quartz Extreme. You shouldn't have to install another graphics card. If you have an older xserve, you may have to hook up a monitor to the dongle.

  • Send to Compressor issue

I felt this should be in the FCPX discussion, not the Compressor discussion...reason below:
I'm on FCPX 10.0.3 and Compressor 4.  I have a 4:3 project I want to export as DV/NTSC using Compressor (Leightronix Nexus does not accept ProRes). Anyway, if I select Share > Send to Compressor", it renders for a bit and I get the "3x encoder type unavailable error" that I see in previous posts (yes, I did a search in both FCPX and Compressor communities...all posts were old and unsolved).
But when I select Share > Export using Compressor Settings, it renders out successfully.
Same timeline, same settings, just different Share export.
    Any ideas why?
    Thanks.
    Jonathan

What would you use instead Tom? Isnt letting compressor handle the renders better quality?
    Thanks for your help!

  • Compressor Issues, fast motion looks terrible.

    Hello,
I require the collective wisdom of this community please!
I'm editing a project for a company that shoots dance competitions.
I've edited a single show, and now I'm looking to send this seq. to Compressor 3, and find an appropriate way to compress said project. This video a little over 3 hours, and is very fast motion.
Previously I have exported the sequence as a self-contained and referenced quicktime movie, and each export gave my footage a pixelated (interlaced?) look. It looks terrible.
I should state that this footage was shot with a Canon XHA1, but is not being distributed in its original HD format.
When I view the sequence in FCP6, it looks great, then I started attempting to use Compressor 3, I wanted to use the compression mode DVD Best, but my project is over 150 min. (the apparent maximum compression time, I may be wrong).
I tried this once, and it took out all of my motion titles, then I tried again, and it took out my audio.
Can anyone help me shed some light on how to get this project exported/compressed so the fast motion won't look like trash, and I can get it into DVDSP in an acceptable format?
Thanks so much. A thousand internets to you.

    What are your sequence settings?

  • Compressor issues... STILL

I'm going to go into the compressor forum too, but thought I'd ask you guys a question. I went into the external compressor program and compressed an imovie (.mov) file, into a MPEG-2 fast encode m2v. I asked compressor to encode BOTH the video and auido, and it gave me a video and auido file. (aiff)
Problem is...the video file and audio file do not sync...the audio file, though it shows that the audio file is LONGER in the timeline than the video? The voice sync is not matched up either.
Did I do something wrong? I "rendered all" when I got it into FCP, which took about 30 mintues (for a 30 mintute video). So I can view it in the canvas. I can't seem to find anything in the MANUAL on this.
    thanks again!
    Mark

My only goal in this project was to fix a "tinny" audio track by replacing it, (splicing it in as a replacement), The only media I had was the DVD produced in I movie...which I could import the file, BUT, it loads it as a "uncompressed file"...which takes three hours. So...I wanted to encode it, since it was going to be written back to a DVD when I'm done fixing it...as an MPEG 2 DVD file. I was caught off guard (and couldn't find any manual reference) for the lack of sync between the video and .aiff file that compressor produced. I figure I'll look at the video in "waveform" and try to sync it with markers as best I can.
I'm just wondering what I did wrong?

  • Compressor issues 4.1

I updated FCP to 10.1.1 and Compressor 4.1 and my custom settings ive been using for the last year and a half the audio is comkng out at 128kps I have this set at 320  What Can i do to fix this

This came up on the Compressor forum a while back. It's apparently a bug (please use feedback link to report).
One workaround: use Quicktime Export Component. Choose MPEG 4 for Encoder Type and MP4 for format.
Another workaround: instead of MPEG 4, use MOV H.264.

  • Compressor Issues

when I compress DV projects, using best 90 minutes, my quality when I burn to DVD is not top notch.
My projects range from 2 min - 6 min. And livetype text and graphics are not crisp, they are blurry and dont look good.
Im new to this, and really don't understand how compressor works, and what formats I need to get the best results.
    please shed some light! thanks

    Hey J3tv,
I'm not sure if my information will be helpful, but it works for me. I'll export my project, then go to quicktime conversion. In the bottom tab that shows "Quicktime" movie as default should be switched to mpeg2. You can then import into dvdsp, which i'm sure you're using.
So far, this is the way i've had the best of luck, i gave up on trying to use compressor when placing it onto dvd. Hope this helps!

  • Qmaster/compressor issues

I set up a Q master cluster for compressor, but every compression immediately fails. What might I be doing wrong?

  • More Compressor 3.5 H.264 Issues

    Following on from this thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2109359&tstart=15
I also have compressor issues. All fine until the upgrade.
I have seen the interlace issues mentioned in the thread, and concur that the quality of the compression with the same settings as the previous compressor is very poor. We managed to address with some tweaks in the settings, most noticeably changing deinterlace to sharp in filters. But it is still not as good.
However, having thought we had fixed the issue we now have users complaining of the videos stopping during playback. I can't admit we have completely figured it out, but I think we are seeing the drop outs occuring in the videos compressed with compressor 3.5, those completed in the previous version don't exhibit the same issue.
The problem is worst with Windows XP, Vista occasionally and interstingly OSX never. We are using the latest version of Flash Player across all platforms, and have tested a number of different things.
    Anybody seeing something similar?

After much experimentation it turned out to be an upgrade to JW Player solved the problem. Although the co-incidence with the upgrade to 3.5 was interesting, it was not relevant. For those using JW Player 4.5 fixed the issue, although 4.4 seems to include the fix.

  • Comparing video quality of AVCHD BluRay discs using Final Cut Pro Share vs Compressor

Up front, I will admit to being a newbie when it comes to using Final Cut Studio 3 and would appreciate some feedback from the Apple forum experts.
I have spent a lot of time trying to determine how to achieve an optimum group of Compressor 3.5.2 settings so that the playback video quality of an AVCHD BluRay disc is equal to or better than one created by using the simpler auto settings of FCPro Share, version 7.0.2.
When using Compressor’s auto/default maximum settings, I experienced the same error message reported in:
Error MessageDuring Creation of Blu-ray Disc in FCP and Compressor 3.5
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12073794#12073794
I have since made some Compressor AVCHD Discs with smaller bit rate settings and compared video quality with a single FCP Share AVCHD disc.  Both seem to be equal in providing a very good video when viewed on my new Panasonic DMP BDT 310 BluRay player. However, the Compressor AVCHD discs show some motion artifacts not present with the FCPro Share version, especially when scrolling text or when objects are moving through the field of view, and visible artifacts are seen from a stationary chain link fence and other lattice work in the background of the video sample.
My sample video used for the comparisons between Compressor and FCP Share discs is a 21 minute duration home movie, originally captured from a mini DV, Canon HV30 1080i camcorder using ProRes HQ encoding(1440x1080), and dragged into FC Pro 7.0.2 timeline where 10 chapter markers have been inserted.
To create an AVCHD disc using FCPro Share, Markers are used to set the IN and OUT points, Select IN to OUT from the timeline, pull down File Menu Share, Select Create BluRay from options in pop out Share pane, and designate output device along with picture files for Background, Logo, and Title options. When these are completed, click on Export.  My 21-minute video required almost two hours for encoding including about 10 minutes for burning. This accomplished on an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
To prepare this same 21-minute video for use with Compressor, I again Select IN to Out from the FCPro timeline, but this time use File Export as a QuickTime Self Contained movie including Chapter markers. Then Open Compressor, choose Create BluRay from Template pane, right click on the down arrow in the Batch window and load the QT self contained movie file. From there I went to the Inspector window and tried various combinations of bit rate settings along with Frame Encoder options such as Better or Best motion parameter controls.
I have tried the following combinations of Bit rate settings along with varying Frame Encoder controls and burned an AVCHD disc for each example:
    Example A
Compressor set to 6 Mbps Average and 8Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings OFF. Approximately 4 hours to encode although the time remaining estimator indicated a larger value of ~7 hours; not an accurate estimator at all.
    Example B
Compressor set to 6 Mbps Average and 8Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings ON, using “Better (Linear Filter) and Better (Motionadaptive)” settings. Approximately 4 hours to encode, not the 13 hours that were estimated.
Conclusion: Comparing A & B Compressor versions, Disc B showed some improvements in reducing motion artifacts over Disc A.
    Example C
Compressor set to 13 Mbps Average and 15 Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings ON, using “Better (Linear Filter) and Better (Motion adaptive)” settings. Multipass checked. DeInterlace was checked. Unknown hours to encode; about 8 hours done overnight..
Conclusion: Disc C showed some minor improvements reducing motion artifacts over Disc B
    Example D
Compressor Auto settings,i.e., 15 Mbps Average and 17 Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings ON, using “Better (Linear Filter) and Better (Motion adaptive)” settings. Multipass checked. Approximately 12 hours to encode, done overnight. Inserted disc next morning after the overnight encoding was completed, and a few minutes later an error message pane appeared that the maximum bit rate had been exceeded.  This message was consistent with the Apple posted thread referenced above. Unfortunately the long overnight encoding was wasted.
It seemed to me that the best Compressor settings for suppressing the motion artifacts were displayed by the disc burned in Example C, i.e.,  13/15 Ave/Max Mbps with“Better” Motion settings in the Frame Encoder.
However, when this disc was compared to the AVCHD Disc burned using the FCPro Share, the latter still seemed much better. I do not know what the auto bit rate values are as set in FC Pro, but for me, the quality is quite good AND the motion artifacts are significantly reduced, especially evident with the scrolling text.
Sorry about this long post, but I thought the detail would be necessary for the experts, and maybe helpful to others trying to get started in this BluRay arena.  Did I misuse Compressor?  I think the sample video exported as a self contained QT movie was the right thing to do?  Not sure where I went wrong.
Thanks in advance for Feedback and Recommendations.  For now, I’m going to stay with the simpler process using Final Cut Pro Share function.
    BoBo

Thank You, Brad, for responding;  glad to hear I'm not the only one having similar Compressor issues.
You may have hit on something.  Perhaps Compressor's use of H.264 encoding was the reason for my motion artifacts?  And perhaps Final Cut Pro Share retains the 1440x1080 quality as it burns the AVCHD BluRay disc?
I had Toast 10 for less than 30 days a couple of years ago, and was lucky to get a refund.
What version of Toast do you have?  Wondering if new Toast 11 has improved previous bugs, especially upgrading its Chapter text, pictures, music.  I would go back to Toast if it came close to mirroring DVD Studio Pro, or even iDVD capabilities.
    Thanks,

  • Can't Re-install Compressor or Q-Master

This all began with Compressor not submitting a batch, instead giving this error:
"Please restart your computer or verify your Compressor installation is correct"
So per various postings and http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1888, I moved forward with reinstalling Compressor and Qmaster, following all the steps Apple suggests, including uninstalling Motion. However, when I run the FC Studio installer, all packages but Motion are grayed out as well as the Continue button. I checked my Receipts folder and no Final Cut/ProApps receipts appear to be in there. So now I'm stumped.
FWIW, my Compressor issue seems to have arisen after upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard. And I have Final Cut Studio 2.

Upgrading is bad. Final Cut Studio is complex with lots of files and frameworks dotted about the system. When you upgrade, it's very easy for these files to be removed, replaced or set with incorrect permissions. That's why it's recommended to install your OS from scratch or at the very least, remove Final Cut Studio and reinstall it.
Here is a guide to reinstalling Compressor / Qmaster:

  • Compressor not compressing 3.0.5

I've recently run into compressor issue (could be due to the last time I did a software update). I've looked through a ton of posts and they don't work even a reinstall doesn't resolve the problem.
I open compressor 3.0.5 drag my .mov file to compressor select any present, click submit, open batch monitor and all it says is processing, unknown time remaining and just sits there doing nothing.
Compressor works on my laptop (PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz mac osx 10.5.8) but not on my Imac.
Any suggestions why it is not processing anything?

  • Failed to send my project in final cut pro to compressor

I tried to send my project in final cut pro to compressor but when I go to file then see send to compressor it will not let me click on "send to compressor". I checked but none of my files are missing or anything and the project is only 4 minutes long. This has happened to me once before and it completely crashed my computer. I had to start out fresh which was a horrible process. CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP?! (URGENT)What might I have done wrong that this happens? In the picture below, this happens and I have no idea why that is.

    I suspect it's a FCP X issue rather than a Compressor issue.
Will FCP export a master file? Make a short section with the range tool and find out.

  • Compressor 3.5 - Burn DVD Preset - Doesn't Burn DVD

    Hello,
Loving the Compressor 3.5 Burn DVD preset, but lately, it's not loving me back.
I send a movie to Compressor, select the "Burn DVD" preset, let the project encode, wait for the burn process to begin, get to "1 minute remaining" on the screen, then BAM!
Compressor goes from "1 minute remaining" to 2, 3, 4+ minutes remaining. And the DVD I've been waiting for isn't burned. I look at the unrecorded part of the DVD and only see my reflection (I take this as the unburned DVD mocking me, as I sit/stare at it, as if I were in some sort of "stupid" contest with the thing).
I let the machine sit for several minutes to an hour. Nothing.
    I've changed DVD brands. Nothing.
I tell the machine that everything is going to be alright. Nothing.
My FCP system was acting very buggy lately (relating to fonts). I created a new user account and it solved all my issues FCP/Motion font issues. But this Compressor issue is something new.
Now, if I go back to my old account, I get the same hang up with Compressor. The Create DVD Preset is encoding my stuff, but not burning my stuff.
In the interim, I'm taking the encoded assets into DVDSP, and creating a menu-less Video DVD.
Taking comments, questions and suggestions about how to solve this issue.
    Compressor, where is the love?

Can Compressor output a disc image properly? That could be burned with Disc Utility.
Does the Create Disc app ever launch? There is no progress window, but you can see a new app and menu bar appear. Also, try doing this with Activity Monitor open. It would be good to know if the fault is Create Disc, or something else.
