Compressor long render times

Is it normal for Compressor 2 to take 12+ hours to render a 45 minute DVD? I'm exporting from FCP 5.0.4 to DVD Best Quality 90 minute 4:3. I started at 1:20 pm, and it said 4 hours. It's now almost 1:20 am, and it still has 45 minutes to go. It seemed to start quickly (it got up to 50% in like 30 minutes) but then slowed down a lot. Am I doing something wrong? I checked FCP and it's still running. I don't have any other CPU hogs open (only Safari, Adium, and of course Batch Monitor.) What can make my renders faster?

Yes, a faster computer would help
The new Intel Macs are great, but keep in mind that you need to need Final Cut Studio 5.1 or later, to be able to run it on Intel. I would recommend buying the upgrade for Final Cut Studio 2 when/if you are buying a new Mac.
David, are you sure Compressor works differently on untouched source footage, when using Export -> Using Compressor? I thought that only was relevant for effects, text/graphics. i.e. when working with DV, you get much better quality on text/graphics when sending your sequence directly to Compressor from FCP.
When Should You Export Directly to Compressor?
The advantage of exporting a sequence to Compressor directly from Final Cut Pro is that rendering happens as part of the transcoding process, potentially saving you time and eliminating unwanted artifacts. Compression and chapter markers in your Final Cut Pro sequence can be included in the resulting compressed media files. When imported into DVD Studio Pro, the chapter markers automatically appear in the Track Editor.
The disadvantage of this approach is that Final Cut Pro cannot be used for other tasks until the export is finished. Depending on the length of the movie, the format you are exporting to, and your computer’s capabilities, exporting can take a significant amount of time.

  • Xtremely long render times

I am doing a very simple project that seems to be taking longer than it should. I'm taking Sony HDV 1080i clips, about 10-15 minutes long, and adding an elapsed time window, and a time code reader window to them for a research client.  3 layers, no editing, no sound. I have place the HVD file in it's native sequence, so there's no rendering until I add the filters from FCP.  Then, it takes from 11-15 hours to render these sequences, then another 2 or so to export the files as h.264 for the client's use.  That seems really long to me.  I made a compressor setting, h.264 1920x1080, 25000kb, so I might avoid the long render time, but that took about 9 hours.  Am I missing something?  I usualy work with DVCPro HD, and notjhing I do, with lots of laysers take that long.

Not looking over your shoulder, I'm making a few possibly invalid assumptions.
The HDV is your first major problem. You should transcode that to ProRes422LT on ingestion and build your sequence in that format. The files are much larger but they're uncompressed. Well, they're compressed but they don't require decompression before they can be rendered.
Exporting to H.264 from PRLT in 1080 is  four to six times realtime depending on your system's specs. I't seight times on mine.
Placing your HDV sequence into a native sequence only means the base layer doesn't need to be rendered to be played. But the HDV must be unpacked, frame at a time, to be rendered with effects and that takes two to six times realtime. You say the clips are 15 minutes but you don't say how long the sequence that takes 15 hours to process is.

  • After Effects CS6 super long render times.

I am trying to render multiple 30 second long compositions and the renders are reaching over 5 hours each. There is nothing special in any of the compositions. I have rendered these same compositions in the past with minor changes in AE CS5 and they finished in seconds using the Open GL renderer. I understand CS6 uses a different engine for rendering. I have ensured my video card is in the supported list (added it), and ray tracing is set to the GPU. I triple checked all the drivers and everything is up to date. I have tried every combination of settings I can think of with no results. Help!
    System Specs:
    i7-3930K
    GTX 770
    32gb ram
    Windows 7 64bit

Five hours is not an unusual render time for a 30-second composition, depending on the details of the composition.

  • Long render time in FCP after using Handbrake

After seeing a suggestion in these forums on converting non-copy written DVDs to usable files in FCP I downloaded Handbrake. It works fine but the render times seem to be extremely long.
Is there any way to speed this up or perhaps any other programs I can use?

Match your export settings to an Easy Set up preset in FCP.
And you don't need Handbrake for unencrypted DVDs.
    Use MPEG Streamclip

  • New machine, new drives...all of a sudden, long render times. Need help!

Just purchased a new 8 core, 6 gigs of ram, and Sonnett raid array. All going well for a few weeks. Now, just to render a simple jpeg with a drop shadow or a 5 second Motion file it takes 7 minutes. I feel like I just threw 10 grand out the window! What is going on? Please help.

Thomas, I have a late 2007 MacPro, I have also just started with HD, well HDV, editing. I use motion very heavily and have to say that I have been noticing pretty significant render times as well. To answer your question yes, exporting an FCP sequence-native animation from motion will be muuuch faster that using templates. Templates are cool, and the idea is right on the money, but from what I have found, they take a long time to render and do not play back very well in FCP unless they have been fully rendered. If I use a template, it is with a graphic that I will overlay once the entire timeline has been put together, this way, I don't have to screw around with rendering templates as I am trying to edit other video/audio/graphics together in the timeline. I just finish the timeline, add the templates, and render the whole thing at once.
Like you, I am becoming very frustrated. As I mentioned above, my work around is to export most of my Motion 3 animations in HDV 1440x1080, send them to FCP and then they don't require any rendering at all - the only downside is that it won't support an alpha channel (at least not that I've seen) so those animations can't use any transparency.
Finally, I have also been having a ton of crashing issues with FCP giving me that same message about "Pro Media Plug In may have caused the crash" or whatever that dumb message says. I looked for any plug in that matched that description and couldn't find it - so I am dumbfounded. Has anyone else had this issue - FCP has crashed 8 times on me today.
Good luck, I'll be checking back on this thread to see if anyone has a fix or workaround or whatever.

  • Much longer render time for a few small changes?

I bought a new Macbook pro last week with a 2.4 ghz intel i5 processor and 8 GB of ram. I got Adobe premiere pro yesterday and I made a video which combined taking footage shot from my flip video camera and audio commentary that I recorded across the full video. The video was rendered with the setting H.264 and the preset Youtube widescreen HD, the final video was about an 800 MB .mp4 file. It took about 30-40 minutes to render.
Today, I added a 17 minute mp3 file for background music, which was 17 mb. I also added 6 images and 2 titles which overlay the video at different points. The only other thing I added along with these two was a 16 second mov file which serves as an intro video to my series. With these 3 (what I consider to be fairly small) changes, my render time has jumped dramatically. With the same export settings, I see the render time build and build until it reaches 4+ hours and I decide to stop. I've tried a couple different formats, but I'm not sure what else to do. I feel that 8gb should be plenty to render a video like this fairly quickly (like I did yesterday) and I'm not sure why it's taking so long compared to yesterday. Is this normal? Any help to guide me with reducing render times would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The Export time will differ by what one is Exporting from and what they are Exporting to. In this case, the "to" has not changed.
    What has changed?
Well, the stills for one. What is the format and what are the pixel x pixel dimensions of those?
The addition of the MOV is another place to look. What is the CODEC inside that MOV "wrapper?" Having to decode via the CODEC can impact the Export time.
The new Audio has changed. What is the format/CODEC of that music file?
Those are the first thoughts that I have on this, and good luck,
    Hunt

  • Rendering Hundreds of Audio Previews Upon Export, Long Render Times

    Hi everyone,
I have an assembly cut of a feature, with footage and a timeline at 422 ProRes HQ, 24 fps, 96kHz audio.
When I try to export any length of a clip, I get exorbitant render times and hundreds of audio previews to render.
Video alone is rendered almost instantaneously.
There are some audio files on the timeline (music and SFX) at 48k sample rate.
Any ideas what the problem is?
    Thanks.
    Premiere CC 2014
    OSX Mavericks
    2 X 2.66 Quad Core Xeon
    32 GB memory
    NVIDIA Quadro 4000 w/ CUDA
    3 tB 7200 RPM - RAID 0

Thanks, Ann. I'm thinking that may be a factor because this is the first time I've had to work with audio recorded at 96 and I've never had this problem.
    Can anyone else elaborate more?

  • Long Render times Looks

I love MB Looks - really getting into it...but the render times are killing me.
Could I potentially speed things up?  Right now, I'm looking at 25 minutes to render about a minute.
Just to clarify, these clips are at about 45% speed and already have a Looks color filter on them. I've just added the misfire vignette, (which I think looks better than the vingettes I used to make with black video and the circle effect).
Previous to adding MisFire, everything was all rendered up....
    Twiddling Thumbs.....
    J

Looks is slow to render, but after completing a recent project I have discovered that the misfire effects are extremely slow.  They are optimized very well.  I feel like they need a major overhaul to take advantage of multicore CPUs.  A great alternative to using the circle filter or misfire to create a vignette is to use the titler.  In order to get realtime playback with my GPU, I did the following:
    1. Create a new title and add a black square the size of the title plate
    2. Add a white oval to the center of the title (the size of the oval will control the size of the vignette)
    3. Place the title in the track above the video you want to add the vignette to
    4. Change the transfer mode to Multiply
    5. Add a Gaussian Blur and crank the blur up to create a smooth gradient from white to black (I had a value in the hundreds)
    6. Adjust the opacity to taste
Just another way to create a vignette that will render much faster.

  • Long render time with premiere pro CS5 lately,  help!

lately my premiere pro CS5 render extremely slow
    i have a 6GB ram 64bit windows 7
is it normal to render a 10 minutes quicktime/h264 codec in 5 hours?
please take a note that this happened recently, so i think my pc spec. should not be the problem
    thanks in advance

You start off with the wrong sequence settings. To resolve that, right click on a clip in the project panel and select 'New Sequence from Clip". That will give you the correct sequence setting for your source material.
When exporting, never use QuiRcktime, since it is a 32 bit application, plagued with numerous severe problems, hence the name. Use plain 64 bit H.264 codec for exporting. If you use Maximum Render Quality, your export can take many times longer than without that checked.
Your memory and presumably the rest of your system (please give details) is not up to this task, especially not when you start with the wrong sequence settings, export with a 32 bit codec and have MRQ turned on.

  • Super long render times every time I edit

    Hey all,
I would really appreciate a quick response to this. Just for some background I am using PP Cs5.5 on a Macbook Pro with 8 GB of ram and am using .mp4 files.
I have brought in an hour and a half long clip and I applied some color correction to it naturally it need to render and it took 7 hours to render. Now that it is finally rendered out every time i move the clip in the time line or make an edit it needs to take 7 hours to render every thing out again!
Please let me know if I am doing something wrong here or what it could be.
    Thanks for the help.

    OK.
Edits will change things, thus requiring new render files.  But just moving it in the same sequence should keep things rendered.

  • Long Render Times in HDV

I've just started on FCP HDV and have noticed that it take a really long time to render. The timeline is set up in the same formatt at the files i've captured and my export settings follow suit.
can anyone explain why it takes an hour to export 4 minutes of timeline.
I am running a brand new G5 and the IT dept have it running well.
I know that HDV is huge but I never had this problem with Premiere Pro HD.
    Cheers heaps for any replies,
    NicNeame

I am making DVD's in the end. I have used the easy set up and everything is flush. Exports are done using Quicktime export not quicktime Conversion. My other question is there an easy to export a low res QT of the timeline quickly.
I am also using the H.264 blah blah range of codecs too but only on renders with Aftereffects. They dont need to be rendered in the FCP timeline and my fields still look good.
Im pretty sure I have the intermediate codec though. Is ther a completed codec out yet?
    Thanks for the replies guys

  • Premier Pro Windows 7 playback stuttering long render time

    Hey
I have creative cloud with premier pro and I just tried rendering a project for the first time since I updated to 7.1. The project is taking an exceedingly long time to render even just a 20 second clip, I have seen posts about mac updates but I am using windows can people help?

    Thanks for the additional info.
"from fraps" is not informative--at least not for me since I don't use Fraps. Frame dimensions? Codec? File type/wrapper? Frame rate? Is frame rate constant or variable?
By "sequence setting using same as clip," am I right that you created the sequence from one of the clips? Regardless, a screenshot of the sequence settings dialog would help.
Also, in the Export Settings dialog, do you click Export (which uses Premiere Pro to encode) or Queue (which sends the job to AME)?

  • Long render times in Premiere CS6

    Hello everyone.
I am exporting my first ever Premiere show. It is a 82 min. long program, HDV 1080i. Everything is rendered - the entire timeline is green. It took well over 2 hours to render, which seems excessive to me, though I did have filters on almost everything.
In the Export Settings window, both "Match Sequence Settings" and "Use Previews" boxes are checked. I expected that since I already rendered everything, this would mean that the export would go very quickly, as the entire show was essentially rendered already. But, it is halfway done, and already taken 20 min., so looks like 40 min. for the whole thing. Am I doing something wrong? Can I do anything to speed things up? When exporting a similar "pre-rendered" show from Final Cut 7 on this computer, it would take just a few minutes.
My specs: I am on a Mac Pro, 2x3 GHz Quad Core, 8G of RAM. I do have a newer Mac with a faster processor & more RAM, which I am going to experiment with the same project later on. But I still think this is awfully slow on the current computer, at least compared to the performance I got with Final Cut 7.
    Thanks much

If you had a PC I would suggest that you compare your PC with others using Premiere Pro CS6. Take the test at http://www.ppbm5.com and see how you stack up. You might be able to detect any possible bottlenecks from your CPU, GPU, memory or disks.
When comparing your scores, only compare to other CS6 tests. Apparently 5.5 was a bit faster at some things.
I see that I have been knocked down to #3 for CS6 - by three seconds. I think I could reconfigure my drives a bit to match his by using my extra SSD for projects, but I prefer to keep it the way it is as a true hot spare. For now at least.  I don't really know how he got better scores in some of the other categories. I don't think I actually care that much at this point either.
The point I am trying to make though, is that I can see where someone with almost identical specs has arranged things a tiny bit better than I have, as far as speed is concerned. He beats me by 3 seconds, but he bettered me by only one second in two categories, two seconds in another, and I gained a second on him in another.
These results basically tell me to leave well enough alone.
However, if I had seen a 5 second loss on drives, for example, or on RAM, then I would have something solid to consider upgrading.
Take a look at the difference between my #3 (remember to only look at CS6 by checking CS6 in the Version tab) and PCx79 who is 11 seconds slower on the weighted total (so the actual numbers do not add up). One second in the disk i/o so that isn't really a factor. MPEG one second. Nothing there.
H.264 BR is a factor. He lost seven seconds. That is the CPU and probably just reflects the fact that I allowed Eric to overclock my system to 4.5 since we have the same CPU but his is clocked to 3.9. Which demonstrates a LOT of trust on my part because I don't really "get" overclocking but I have decided to trust Eric.
MPE Off was a big difference too. I don't understand this one because he has a slightly better graphics card. It must be more of the overclocking? I don't know.
So, it is fairly easy to spot the advantages of the overclocking of his 3.9 to my 4.5 I think.
Take a look at your scores. If they fall into line with other people who have similar equipment, be happy that you seem to have configured your system correctly. On the other hand, if you see a problem you can't really explain, look there. That is your starting point. Or, perhaps you just give the slow PC to a needy relative and splurge on something new for yourself.
Unfortunately, I don't believe that PPBM5 works for a Mac. Yet. Volunteer to be a beta tester.

  • Extremely Long Render Times!!  Please help!!

    Hello,
Let me start off by saying I am new to premier, forums, and video editing for the most part.
My content comes from (2) GoPro Hero 4 cameras set at 4k and a Sony FDR-AX100, also set at 4k.
MY PROBLEM (well hopefully the one you can help me with)
I import the content into Premier Pro CC 2014 (which is all up to date) applying color correction, fades, and titles.  When I try to playback the files even with all effects turned off my computer will not do it.  I need to first render preview files.  So I select my in and out points and try to render but it takes, DAYS to complete.  For example:  A 3 minute selection on the timeline will take 70 hours to render the preview files.   After it renders, I make a few more adjustments and let my computer render for a few more days.
I must be doing something wrong.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    MY SETUP:
I use the Nvidia CUDA architecture as my playback engine in Premier.
Premier is installed on my internal drive. The footage & project files are kept on a WD VelociRaptor Thunderbolt Drive and my preview files are set to a second WD VelociRaptor Thunderbolt Drive.
My preferences are set to use up to 12 gigs of ram for Premier, leaving the other 20 for other applications.  It is optimized for Memory.  I have tried most all combinations of ram setting here with little luck.  (again, I'm new and don't know what I'm doing.)
My Premier sequence is set to be 1080p & my sequence settings are set to a width & height of 960 x 540 with the program monitor set at 1/4 quality.
All the above and I can't even play a file.  I have nothing else open or running and have stopped everything that would normally run in the background at startup (like the iTunes helper).
Anywho.  Thanks for taking the time to read all the above.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Warm regards,
    Alex

A quick update for anyone stumbling on this later...
As it turns out, I am not utilizing the full amount of RAM available to me.  In fact, I am unable to.  As it was explained to me, my workflow is bottlenecked by my processor and because I have an iMac, well, I'm stuck with what I have until I can afford to replace the machine.
I have 32 gigs of RAM, and with my processor at 90% use, only 9 to 10 gigs of RAM are utilized.
I'd rather buy a new machine (custom PC) rather than swap to FCP.  So the saving begins...
However, I am not up the creek yet.  It was recomended I drop the quality/file size by using Media Encoder and converting all my footage to Apple ProRes files, replace clips, and finish what I started.
    I began converting last night.
I guess we can chalk this up to Beginners Luck?
Thanks again Steven for all your help.
    Warm regards to all,
    Alex

  • Long render times

I'm running a 3.1ghz intel core i5 Imac with 16gb of ram and AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB Graphics card
and 127gb of space on my HD. I'm trying to render and export (just render first) a 3 minute clip with just some basic colour correction and transitions and its telling me it will take 20 hours to render..... In the preferences i've set premiere up to use as much of the Ram as possible yet this is the times its showing me. suggestions??

    What version of Premiere Pro?
If CC7.2 or 7.2.1, then you're not alone:

You find several causes discussed. The solutions that I recall are 1) switching Renderer from GPU Accleration to Software Only, and 2) Disabling certain effects, such as RGB Curves.
