Compressor making problem Program Stream Mpeg2s?

I'm having an ongoing discussion with the manufacturer of our video playback server (Leightronix Nexus) at our station. The box uses Mpeg2 Program Streams for playback.
I have Compressor 3.0.2. The Nexus playback is having occasional stutter problems playing back the Mpeg2 fies created by Compressor. I've verified bitrate, compressor settings, reimported the original footage, etc, but nothing seems to help. Finally I got a response back from Leightronix that reads:
"The problem is Compressor is not very good at creating a MPEG-2 Program stream file. Use ffmpegX to convert your MPEG-2 transport stream from Compressor to a MPEG-2 Program stream that will play fine on the NEXUS."
I'm trying to get additional technical information from them on exactly what Compressor is or is not doing, but I'd thought I'd ask first if anyone else has had issues with the Mpeg2 PS output from Compressor for anything they're doing? All these files play fine on the Mac itself, it's just when they actually air for us.

Further information about this problem ... the issue is that Compressor is creating a VBR file which has some problems. In portions of the video where there is a mostly white background or mostly black background (say a white screen with a single word of text), and creating an Mpeg2 Program Stream with VBR (6 min, 7.2 max), the algorithm will cause the bitrate to go way below the minimum during that portion of the file. Quicktime will play it correctly but other playback machines have a problem with it.
We were able to get around the problem by just setting Compressor to CBR @ 7.2 but it's still an issue. If anyone at Apple wants a copy of the Quicktime MOV we were converting, contact me at [email protected] and I'll get it to you.

I can output and play a mpeg without audio on a PC, but when I try to output with audio, it stutters horribly on the PC. (I use compressor to make the mpegs)
I think it may be the audio.
How can i fix this? I've read that I should convert the audio to a mp3 then mux it.
The problem is that I have NO IDEA how to do this!
What program (hopefully free) can I do this with??

I think I am having this same problem. I have a server that I want to put video onto, which then allows us to schedule the programming, etc.
I have Final Cut Studio 2 and have tried pretty much every possible compression configuration, but the sound seems to be stuttery or cut in and out. The server requires one of these file types: mpg, mpeg, vob, m2p, m2v, or mp2 and the video and audio must be contained in the same file. I have tried transport streams, program streams, and elementary streams which I tried to mux with MPEG Streamclip unsuccessfully. I wanted full HD res, but I decided to drop the size to NTSC because I thought maybe this was the problem and it still didn't work. Compressor's MPEG-1 setting looked terrible, but the audio played fine. Does the bit rate need to be changed?
There is video on the server that DOES play correctly, so I know it's not a result of our speakers or anything like that. I think that video was compressed or otherwise created using a trial version of MPEG Power Pro (it was before I got to this job, so not 100% sure).
I have tried so many options and just want to find how to easily compress it so it will look good AND sound good! Am I misunderstanding the compression options or just missing something in general? Please help.

Program Stream files not loading?

I used compressor to create program streaming video files which I uploaded to my site on Hostgator. The files, when invoked by my website link, take so long to show up, as in 10 minutes or so, that I'm considered a different approach. My browser is Firefox but Safari doesn't work either. Any ideas? Thank you.

Neophyte here. FYI. I chose a Compressor setting because I wanted my video links to being playing as soon as the link was invoked. The files are rather large...350-450 mb...even with the program streaming option.
I understand my other display options include embedding the QT on the site (construting in iWeb) , rather than using links. I wanted a single page for each video (there are five, each 3 minutes or so long) in order to focus attention.
If embedding is my choice for quickly seeing the videos, I will. But I'd like to know if my choice of compression is the best way to go. I'm using Hostgator which says they're 'not really set up' for streaming, yet mention flv as an option. So perhaps my solution is to compress for YouTube and make my files private links to my site.
I know this problem crosses topic boundaries. As I said, I'm trying to muddle through, so if you can offer advice up to the point that I can cross to another topic group, I'd be very thankful.

This machine played audio out of QT with these files prior to upgrade this afternoon.

I've never run a component conflict test is there a tool for that or is this a command in terminal?
There may still be some "tools" around to help with the process but you still have to run playback tests yourself and evaluate the results. The process is quite simple. You just need to "hide" one or more components, open the QT Player, and play a file to see if it is now working correctly. If it isn't, then continue "hiding" additional components. If the file does play correctly, then you have found a conflict and can start "unhiding" components to determine which one (or combination of components) is causing the problem by removing any "problem" components to an external location such as your desktop. Just remember to close the QT Player after each playback test. This is required (or at least used to be required) for the regeneration a new list of components available for use.
I used the term "hide" above since I simply keep a "Disable" folder handy in my Library QT Component folder for just such tests. Placing a component or set of components into the folder temporarily "hides" it from the QT Player when it next generates a list of the components available for use. Specific strategies vary. I sometimes use use a binary tree approach to hide the components (I.e., "hide" half of the components instead of one at a time.) Unfortunately, I don't know exactly how this works with regard to QT X. So, I would likely run such tests in the QT 7 Player. So far, when everything is working correctly in QT 7 Player, QT X seems to be able to play the same file(s) in QT X via the 32-bit switching process.

Captioning in Compressor with Program Stream

I have a commercial that I have added a closed captioning scc file and compressed it to a program stream in compressor.
However I have no way to view the mpeg file to see if the captioning is actually there.
I have tried taking that file into DVDStudioPro, and doing a build and viewing it with DVD Player, but that doens't work.
By using the MediaInfo app, I can see that there is a EIA-608 stream, but is there any way on the mac to view the captioning?
I have been told by apple to just "trust it is there."

I don't see cc support on there info page, but the google search keep pointing to this software.
I have not use it, I'm Mac only in my shop.

Create Mpeg2 program stream file

I am going to send in a film to a competition that requires the following format:
File type: Mpeg2 program stream, field order B (.mpg). format: 720 x 576 (bxh), 25 fps. (Pal DVD) 24 bit, 4:3. Video Bit rate: 6 - 8 Mbit.
Can I create this in FCE and how?
Or which programme would I need?
(I only have iDVD for creating dvds)

Hi,
by reading at FCE4 manual, page 1020 it doesn't say that it can export MPEG2 files, but MPEG4.
iDVD encodes the source material into MPEG2 for DVD authoring.
As it seems that you need a file (not a DVD), iDVD creates assets (encoded movies) before burning into a DVD. Those assets are inside the iDVD project and are created when iDVD encodes your movie, but I'm not sure whether you can use them as your output file to deliver for your contest.
You can try and see if iDVD will keep them before burning (you can avoid to burn a physical disk, the encode happens before).
There might be other free tools that can produce the MPEG2 files, but I don't know any of them.

There are several different kinds of Mpeg-2 files. Sounds like you've been creating the one normally used for making DVDs. DVDs require "elemental" streams. That means the audio and video are separate streams, files. So it's doing exactly what you're asking it to do. I imagine you're choosing one of the DVD presents.
What you need to do is switch to a "program" stream preset if you want the audio combined with the video, assuming, of course, that you're not trying to make a DVD in DVD SP which would be counter productive.

Audio out of sync from demuxed program stream

I've been trying to resolve this problem without any success. I recently ripped some video from a dvd in order to make a backup. I extracted the title I wanted as a muxed program stream. I then used MPEGStreamclip to demux into .m2v and .ac3 files. I imported these into DVDSP and burned the disc. The result is that the audio drifts out of sync over the course of the length of the video (about 1.5 hours). I've done this same exact procedure many many times and haven't had this problem before. In fact the video will play back in perfect sync in both MPEGStreamclip and VLC. I did notice when importing the files into DVDSP that the length of the ac3 file shows a difference of almost 4 seconds (shorter) than the video. So obviously this is the problem. I just can't understand why if the video plays back perfectly its not being extracted properly by MPEGStreamclip. I also tried demuxing with BBDemux, which produced the same result. I then tried with the demux tools in ffmpeg and that process started creating numerous different versioned files of the original file and actually ended up running out of disc space.
Has anyone run into this problem before and found a solution?

Ok, I understand what you're doing now. But you're losing some quality by going to 422 and then back to m2v again, not to mention the extra time required for the encoding.

No audio in program stream

I am using compressor FCP studio 2. Newest version of compressor. I am encoding for a Matco video server. Recently after going to FCP2 I have noticed that some of my encodes have no audio on Matco server. I have tried TS stream and program streams. the Matco server says to use program streams. The strange thing is I can open a encode on my Mac intel machines with MPEGstreamclip and I can hear audio.
Has anyone had this problem?

The fact that you can hear audio when using MPEGstreamclip (one of my favorite little apps) seems to suggest that audio is there. Try VLC. If you still get audio with VLC, the problem is probably with that Matco server.

MPEG-2 Program Stream underestimated?

I made a sequece of 33 minutes on FCP. Main goal was to export the movie, just to view on my iMac. I have tested just about everything that the Compressor offers. At the end it appears that MPEG-2 Program Stream did a good job. I wonder why (almost) always is adviced to make a stand alone movie via Quicktime Movie or Quicktime Conversion. The videoquality is not better than Program Stream. Of course I also did the Quicktime conversion. Good result, but round the edges of moving objects sharp horizontal lines show up. I know that deinterlace can deminish this problem (jus a little bit). Downside is also that the filesize increases dramaticly.
The 33 minutes long movie made with MPEG-2 Program Stream was almost one third of the size of the Quicktime conversion movie. Considering that there is not much difference between the two concerning videoquality, I wonder why this kind of export is hardly adviced. Watching the Program Stream movie is also more pleasant to view, because the earlier mentioned horizontal lines are absent here.
I would like to know your opinion. Do you also have good experiences with Program Stream? Or maybe there are still other options than Quicktime that offer more or less the same qualitry that Program Stream gives?

If you are only going to watch this on a computer I would de-interlace your footage. I don't usually make MTS mpg files unless they are requested. These usually are requested because they are playing back from a particular system that prefers MTS.
This is what we usually do to for playback:
export a quicktime movie of your sequence
-due to your length I would uncheck make self-contained(lower-left of the export window)
I prefer Compressor over QT for creating some files because Compressor will give me a better idea of what my exported file size will be(mostly based on data rate) and there are more controls for de-interlacing etc.
I would do tests with one minute of the most complex part of the video. When you get this to look good you will then be able to figure out how big your full video will be and determine what works best for you.
Turning on frame controls on(settings inspector window-under description line/3rd box from the left) in Compressor is a good place to start.
Set output fields to progressive. Start with everything else in default. If you are still having issues you can change settings to better or best but know that this will increase your render times greatly.

No audio after Mpeg-2 (program stream) compression

Hi, one of my customers asked me for an MPEG-2 file of his video program.
I made some with compressor, trying elementary stream, program stream and transport stream.
Video-quality is ok, but there is no audio in the files.
What can I do? Please help.

What are your sequence settings?
Are the source files that you are editing with in Final Cut muxed mpg files?
Final Cut has issues when you try to edit with H264 and MPG-2 files.
It can work but it can also create problems and is not recommended by Apple. I would convert these muxed files to ProRes 422 or if you don't have that try DVCPro50.
I have better luck with compression when I export a reference or self-contained QT(not Quicktime conversion) of my sequence to the desktop and then try using that in Compressor as opposed to sharing or using Final Cut to send files to Compressor. This is supposed to work well but I have had mixed results. Exporting my sequence always yields good results.

Program stream won't play

The NPR Program Stream will no longer play in iTunes and I don't know how to fix it. I click on play and nothing happens. Any ideas?

I'm having a similar problem with my local NPR station since upgrading iTunes. In my case, I click on the "launch" button on the website and the streaming plays for about 5 seconds (the station identification), and then music from my iTunes library starts to play. I haven't changed anything other than upgrading to iTunes 9.
I have checked the website streaming on a PC using Windows Media Player, and it works fine there.

Creating a Program Stream MPEG File

I work at a small public cable access operation and we use Final Cut 4 to edit our video. The video is then burned to DVD for airing. We recently purchased a file server that requires the files to be in MPEG 2 Program Stream format. It is my understanding that Final Cut Pro creates MPEG 2 Transport stream formats.
I am looking for both hardware and software solutions to convert from an MPEG 2 transport stream to an MPEG2 program stream.

I use Compression Master by Popwire. Expensive at $499, but it works. I don't think you can convert transport streams to program stream though.

Problem when streaming with the CLI flash media encoder 2.5

I have a problem when streaming with Flash Media Encoder 2.5. When I run the GUI, everything works, but when I use the commandline with the same profile I have created using the GUI, it says it can't connect to the server.
I have to use this version of the encoder, because the other is not working with the server, and I have to create a program to remotely control the flash media encoder, so I have to use the CLI. What can i do to go over this problem?

There is no authentication needed. I can't use Flash Live Media Encoder 3 because it is not supported by the people which manages the server i have to connect to.
In fact, I don't know why they dont support it, but that is the way it is.
Through the GUI, i connect directly and without problems, without user/pass.
