Compressor Missing Markers

This week my markers came up missing when I exported via Quicktime Movie, then dragged the file into compressor.
The markers show up if I open the movie in quicktime, but they will not show up on the Preview bar.
Export was set to DVD Studio Pro Markers and I tried the All Markers setting. The markers always show up in QuickTime Player.
Of course I did the latest and greatest update for pro apps this week.
Any ideas how to get the chapter markers to appear in Compressor?
Using FCP 6 with Compressor 3.0.5 and QuickTime Player 7.6.6.
Thanks in advance.

Do you have Compressor set to show chapter markers? Next to the timeline (Preview window) click on the maker icon and see if this is set to show chapter marks.
If you don't have a ton of marker to make you can just make them in Compressor. Click on the marker icon to make the chapter marker.
To make chapter makes to be imported into Compressor, Compressor manual page 302.

  • Export to AppleTV via Compressor, Chapter Markers Wrong

I'm exporting various projects out to AppleTV via Compressor with Chapter Markers. Works great except for the Chapter Markers, which are out of sync...significantly, by 30 seconds or so. Any ideas on what the problem might be or how to ensure Chapter Markers will transfer over to the AppleTV setting in compressor?

So this is a Compressor-specific issue, right?
What I mean to say is, if you're exporting QT movies out of FCP, those do not exhibit the shift in chapter markers, correct? Just trying to determine if FCP/QT is the culprit here.
Or are you exporting directly to Compressor? Or adding the chapter markers directly in Compressor?

  • FCP 7 sending to compressor chapter markers question  . . .

Have set an in and out point on the timeline and then send it to compressor and burn a SD DVD, the previous chapter marker prior to the in point (have parts 1 & 2 on the timeline) is showing up in the chapter list after burning. Anyone else had this issue?
In FCP 6 and previous versions, never had this problem.
thanks in advance for any info . . .

    Same problem here.

  • MPEG-2 Compressor missing from QT 6?

I've just started using DVD Studio Pro. And I'm learning how to use it. So I tried to burn a DVD. The process required that I compress the QT MOV file into an MPEG-2 format. So following the directions, I tried. But there was no MPEG-2 compressor listed when I selected "Export" from QT Player.
I'm using QT 6.0.3 (Pro) and Mac OS 9.2.2 on a Powerbook G4 800 MHZ machine. Thts is a freshly installed copy of both the OS and QT using the recommended installation choices.

The standard distribution of QuickTime never came with an MPEG-2 compressor. That would only have come with DVD Studio Pro. If you're working on the system on which DVDSP is installed, you may need to reinstall DVDSP to get the codec back. If you're doing the export on a different system, you may be able to copy the QuickTime MPEG Encoder that came with DVDSP to the system on which you're working; I'm not sure, though, since I haven't seen that old version of DVDSP in years.

  • Missing Markers?

Anybody know why my Markers are constantly disappearing? Just in the course of normal work, as I'm deleting takes or whatever, and with whatever I'm taking out, goes the Marker ... I must have renamed "BRIDGE" in this stupid song about twenty times at this point. Thanks for your patience!

I've had this, but rarely. Thinking back, I think it may have happened when I dragged a region to the marker track to define a marker and then subsequently deleted the region. But I do this often, 98% of the time it seems to works fine.
In any case, the solution is to lock the marker track by clicking the track protect padlock. If you don't see this, turn them on in your Arrange menus -> View -> Track Protect Button.

  • Markers not coming through into DVD studiopro

This may be a question for the dvd studio forum.
I export in compressor with markers and put on to the track line in studio pro. The markers come through ok. I take a second clip and put it on straight after the first - no markers.
However the markers are there. If I put the second clip on first they appear ok and putting the first clip on after that and again no markers.
I have done similar things before and its worked without me thinking about it.
    Pete Snowdon

Are you adding multiple videos to the same track in DVD Studio Pro, similar to the way you would add clips in FCP's Timeline?
If so, that can't work. The markers are based on time.
Example: Clip 1 is two minutes long and has a marker at 31 seconds.
Clip 2 is three minutes long and has a marker at 50 seconds.
Adding clip 2 behind clip 1 results in its 50 second marker moving to 2'50" which will inavalidate it.
Solution: Put your video clips on different tracks and link them using the End Jump function in DVD Studio's Connections pane.

  • Chapter Markers Problem

When I export to Compressor from within FCP, the chapter markers appear in compressor. If I export a non-self contained QT Movie from FCP and drag it into compressor, they markers are not there. I am saving with "All Markers" selected and have never had this problem before. Any ideas?

    Glad you found a solution.
For what it's worth, All Markers, despite the name, isn't all it's cracked up to be. In fact, it's inferior to DVDSP Markers if you're looking to export out to Compressor for DVD work. DVDSP Markers, in addition to (manually placed) Chapter and Compression Markers, include automated markers - Edit/Cut Markers - at each cut point, including the beginning and end of a transition. (The more you have to hammer down the bit rate, the more they make a difference, in my experience). Edit/Cut Markers are not available to Compressor if you export using any other markers setting.

  • FCPX - Compressor - DVD Authoring Workflow - Help

What is the best workflow for DVD creation using an iMac.
We are shooting HD video on 2 cameras.  We import the AVCHD folders into FCPX.  In order to work real time we turn on Proxy.  We then send to compressor to create an MOV file with AAC audio as shown below.  We then use Sony DVD Architect or about to try Adobe Encore for DVD authoring as we need to create a PLAY all and chapters for all 26 scenes of the video.  There are 2 acts and each is about 45 minutes long.
Import of the raw video is about 20 minutes, import into FCPX is long (never actually clocked it).  Export from FCPX to compressor is zero.  Compressor to MOV is 14 HOURS (7 Hours per act)!  Use in DVD authoring program is zero but export is another 3 hours???
(Compressor export settings - video was shot at 1080i 1280x720

First, I need to say that I still do 90% of my work in FCS. Although I'm intrigued by FCPX and using it more and more, I have a whole lot of learning ahead. There are a lot of people on the FCPX boards who are using it as their primary editor…and you may get more informed advice over there.
But to your workflow questions, I think I would see if your system can handle optimized media (Pro Res) rather than Proxy. I just did a two camera shoot and had no trouble cutting in Pro Res – with the media on a FW 800 external drive. Then I followed my usual workflow: after finishing, export as a QT movie with current settings so that I have a Pro Res master that I can bring into Compressor to re-purpose for DVD, Web, Broadcast, Mobile Devices.
As to your specific DVD needs, you probably already know that Compressor can output DVD's with a simple menu that respects chapter markers that are set within Compressor (not FCPX). So there's only one encode: Pro Res > MPEG 2 plus AC3,  which processes fairly quickly. Fair warning: there was a recent poster in this forum who had a boatload of trouble with a long video and over 20 chapters. I have not encountered those problems myself, but I don't believe he ever found a fix for his.
If you require a complex menu, then probably Encore is the way to go unless you have access to DVD Studio Pro. I would imagine that Compressor's markers would be recognized by Encore, but I'm not positive. They definitely are recognized by DVD Studio Pr – and for that matter, iDVD.
BTW, you state the video was shot 1080i…what is the significance of 1280X720? You know that all DVDs are 720X480.
    Good luck.

  • Why are my markers disappearing?

Marking clips in Premiere. The clips aren't linked/nested/grouped etc. Just regular old clips in the timeline. I save and close the project. Upon reopening, the markers are gone. On *one* of the autosave files I can get the markers to appear for a moment upon loading the project, but they quickly disappear. Anyone experience anything like this?

    Hi All.
Figured it out. Wanted to come back and post my solution b/c 1. No one does that. Ever. 2. It's a terrible feeling to Google your problem and come up with a half-dozen unanswered threads about missing markers or w/e it is you're troubleshooting.
I noticed on an autosave that upon opening the project the markers would appear *for a moment* and then disappear (presumably after linking to the source file). I knew they were there in the project before being linked. I have the source media on an external hard drive, so I unmounted the drive and opened the project with all media offline (to keep the project from linking the files and clearing my markers). Went to Premiere Pro > Preferences > Media and checked the box labeled "Write XMP ID to Files on Import". Relinking now - markers intact.

  • Reverb not present at beginning

I have bounced a song and the reverb doesn't kick in at the beginning of an audio object. It shows up about 2 seconds after the object has started. This has happened to me several times. I'm using SpaceDesigner, there is no automation, and it all the other things like compression and EQ still seem to be working from point 0, just not the reverb. Any Suggestions?

This has happened to me logic 6.4.3 panther 10.3.9 . the first vocal region in the song the reverb came in 2 seconds or so late and one of the later regions also. Bounces appear to be inconsistent. recently i bounced a multitrack drum session down to kik, snare and stereo kit only to discover on a couple of songs the toms were missing from the bounce also the room mic had the ssl compressor missing from part of the song ( this occured on 2 different songs. Given the fact that bounces can be mixdowns for clients not just work in progress this begs the question about using the word " Pro". 4 years trouble free operation under os9. Logic 7 is no better bounces are coming back with 5000 samples or more added onto the start of the file or sometimes with the first 50 bars or so missing.
A sorry state of affairs in this functional area of the program!

  • Chapter Markers missing via Compressor?

Hi y'all, Using the latest FCP Studio, I used the default Compressor setting for DVD best 90 minutes, and my chapter markers did not get exported. Any idea what the problem is, or how to recapture them without re-exporting from FCP? I can't find a way to export the text of the markers. I also read that markers on clips will not export, only from the timeline, but FCP would not let me add Chapter markers to the timeline. It is being ornery.

    Jefferis
You can read this tutorial about * Chapters and Compression Markers *.
FCP lets you add chapter markers in timeline; you must be doing something wrong. You can add the markers in Compressor too.
    Hope that helps !

  • Use of/effect of compression markers in Compressor 4...

I have a question about the effect of compression markers in Compressor 4.  I know they are used to mark areas where you want compression lessened so that the video looks better (like action scenes or fast camera movement).
I just worked through a Compressor 4 tutorials.  The tutorial says using them forces the encoding engine to add more video data for the location vs. other locations in the video stream, thus improving the video quality (at the expense of greater file size, of course).
What I don't understand is how the period for which lesser compression is applied is determined.  In other words, if you place a single compression marker, which marks a single frame, how long before and after that marker in the timeline is compression reduced?  For instance, if you have a 5 second scene of sports play vs. a 2-minutes of the same action, how does Compressor know how long you want to reduce the video compression around the marker?
I know it can't apply only to the frame the marker marks.  But does it apply for a second before and after?  Ten seconds?  Or does the marker cause compressor to analyze the action around the marker and somehow determine a period for which compression should be lessened?
    Thanks!

Here's the in's and out's about using compression markers in Compressor. (The article is using Compressor 3.5, same holds true with Compressor 4.)
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/compression_chapter_markers_stone.html
I added compression markers to a video. I missed the part that compression markers only work with MPEG-2 compressing.

  • Compressor crashes only with markers...

I've already found a workaround for this issue but I would love to figure out why compressor crashes whenever I try to compress a file with chapter markers. Here's what's happening: I export my DV sequence as a self-contained .mov w/o markers and then use compressor to compress to mpeg-2 to be sent to DVD SP. Everything is fine EXCEPT I have no markers when I go into DVD SP...ok. If I export the same sequence w/markers, when I submit to compressor, the compression process fails every time. So now I have to bring the self-contained .mov w markers into DVD SP, drop it into the timeline, so the markers are set on the timeline, then delete the audio and video from the timeline, so that I can drop the properly compressed mpeg-2 files on the timeline. It works, it's a few more steps, but it's a "workaround" and they sit like a thorn in my side. Any thoughts?

No, you must move your ~/.mozilla file. Your ~/.mozilla file is hidden, but that won't stop you. From a terminal, do what Shining recommended:
    mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla.bak
This is renaming (with the mv or move command) /home/yourusername/.mozilla to /home/yourusername/.mozilla.bak
That way, when you start Mozilla Firefox, your configuration files (in ~/.mozilla) will be missing, so Firefox will create new ones.
I think moving profiles.ini is also alright, since that file contains the profile name. So moving it should effectively disable the current profile and start with a fresh one, which is always a good thing to check (not only with mozilla apps btw ).
And restoring it should enable it back.
I think I still prefer working on the ~/.mozilla level as I indeed suggested, but I suppose it's just a matter of preference.
    @AriciU
    Which arch are you using (x86, x86_64, .. ) ?
Did you try googling for that issue ?
You could also check firefox bugzilla.

  • Chapter markers lost from quicktime MOV in compressor

I searched on this topic and can't seem to find it specifically. Soo....
When we export from FCP through compressor to an m2v, chapter markers come through fine and appear in DVD SP just fine. However, an editor of mine exported to a quicktime MOV with the chapter markers. The file, when opened in quicktime, show the chapters there.
However. If I run the MOV through compressor using the same set ups, the chapter markers are striped from the resulting file.
I am wondering if there is something I am missing when I have to do this from an MOV with chapters.
    OR
If there is some way to export or extract the chapter marker information in a way that DVD SP can import. The text track that is in Quicktime has a good deal of other information that DVD SP won't accept as a chapter marker file. Argh.
Can FCP export JUST the chapter marker text. I am obviously going to just go in and add the chapter markers to the track in DVD SP myself. But, as everyone knows doing this after compressing to M2V I will no longer be able to have those markers on the exact frame I want due to GOP.
So, I am asking this for the next time I have an MOV with chapters that I want to convert to mpeg2 and retain the markers for DVDSP.
Just so you know... yes. These markers where properly tagged as chapter markers. (obviously because quicktime shows them as such.)
Thanks guys. I know someone else has had to deal with this somewhere.

I must be losing it. I meant to post in this thread.
My chapters are clean. Pretty good at avoiding anything problematic. I even keep spaces out of my folder names because when I learned to use computers they weren't allowed. (only 128 characters too, if I remember correctly)
I have the previous versions of Final Cut Studio. The recent decline of DVD and the economy has eaten my departments budget to upgrade the OS to Leopard and to Studio 2 so FCP 5.1.4, etc.
Maybe this has been fixed in the upgrade?
My editor has upgraded. So, this would be entirely a moot issue if Apple saw fit to make their projects backwards compatible. (Don't get me started on that) I guess I will have to stay on top of my contract editors and sending me an XML so I can work in their projects. Or giving me the M2V's I ask for already rendered.
Until we can upgrade around here.
    thanks for the help tho.

  • GOP Structure Differs or Necessary Cell or Chapter Markers Missing?

    DVD Studio Pro 3.0.2
A small project with one track consisting of two video streams.
Both pieces of video are exactly the same length.
Both are excoded using the same preset in Compressor.
I set up the new preset using CLOSED GOP which the manual tells me is needed for multi-angle projects.
The average bitrate for one is 4.9Mbits the other is 5.0Mbits.
I'm using buttons in a graphic in the subtitle track to switch between V1 & V2.
The track has 3 chapter markers. One at the very start.
One approx 1 second in, and one approx one second from the end.
The subtitle sits between Chapter Markers 2 & 3. (Button Highlight Markers).
When I run it in the simulator I get:
"Warning: Illegal angle situation. Only the Main Video Angle will be simulated."
I click on "OK" and in the simulator it then works quiet well.
However when I try the build I get:
"Lounge-View01:Angle GOP Structure Differs. Necessary Cell or Chapter Markers may be missing"
Can anyone advise what may be going wrong?
I've done a search but cannot find a suitable solution.
(In preferences I have "Fix Invalid Makers On Build" on).
I've spent some time on this trying a few things but seem to be going around in circles.
    Thanks all.

    Thanks Drew.
I'd actually read a couple of those threads when I did my original searches.
Still I went back and read them again and something "clicked".
A post mentioned that if your FCP sequence had a cut, when you encode it with Compressor, Compressor will force a "i" frame. (Is this mentioned anywhere in any manual? I missed it if it was). It then occurred to me that one of the two sequences I was having trouble with had a single cut (edit) in it.
Which means the GOP order probably changed at this point resulting in the "GOP Structure Differs" error message.
To resolve this I exported both sequences from FCP as self contained Quicktime movies. These self contained files now no longer had any breaks or "cuts".
I put these into Compressor and re-encoded the MPEG2 files. I put the results into DSP and tried again. These re-encoded MPEG2 files made from the self contained QT files worked perfectly. No error messages at all.
I build a test project which wouldn't work in (Apples) DVD Player (not unexpected), but worked fine when burnt to a DVD+RW disc and tried in a free standing DVD player.
So when making a multi-angle project in DSP the best procedure appears to be:
    (1.) Complete your FCP sequences.
(2.) To remove any cuts or breaks in your FCP sequences, export the sequences as self contained MOV files.
(3.) Use the self contained MOV files when encoding with Compressor, as this will ensure matching GOP structures in the resulting MPEG2 files.
Now all I have to do is to get the overlay to sit properly on the screen .....
