Compressor not responding??

Hi Guys,
I hope someone will be able to help or advise me on this issue I have with Compressor: Whenever I want to convert a file to anything like MPEG-1 | MPEG-2 | H.264, etc, I go through the steps required, drop in the clip I'm converting, load in the format I want to convert to, submit, submit again, then open Batch Monitor, and.. nothing! It says it's processing, but after 2-3 mins, nothing has happened... So I force quit, try again, nothing.. At some times, I manage to get it to convert a file to an iPod movie or something, but for the most part, it's unreliable and unusable...Please help. I have tried trashing preferences in Compressor and Batch Monitor, and also Repair Permissions..
Thanks in advance.. (I am working in PAL..)

same issue as me bro. I submit a job, in this case a 720 x 576 qt movie (tried both a ProRes and Animation codecs), and it does nothing. Regardsless of wether the file is on an external hdd or on the desktop it wont submit it or start the process.

  • 1) Compressor artifacts and 2) Processes not responding

The whole reason I switched from Windows/Premier to Mac/Final Cut was to avoid broken software. I'm beginning to think the Mac is no better. Well, that's not entirely true. I think OS X is more stable than any version of windows but DVD Studio Pro 4.0.2 is a step back in stability at least for me. Before upgrading to Tiger and FCS, I could reliably build and burn DVDs. Now I can no longer pry a complete working DVD out of DVDSP4.
I've got so many problems and so many questions I don't know if I should post them all in one message. I guess I'll keep them in one message but try to keep it short.

    BACKGROUND
I shoot and edit a weekly local soap opera: http://www.shadesoflife.net
Each time I complete four episodes I create a DVD with these four episodes on it for the cast. This DVD I'm working on is for episodes 92 through 95 and I'm adding chapter marks and scene indexes to the DVD. By using the DVDSP templates and the correct drop zones, this has been quite easy, except for the fact that I can't seem to get the video to import any more.
Actually I got three of my four episodes to import just fine. These were exported from FCP as stand-alone QT movies and included chapter marks. Episode 94 would never finish the background compression step when importing into the DVDSP project as an asset.
Because of the suggestions I read in other articles in this discussion group about this kind of problem, I deleted the episode 94 audio and video assets from the project along with all menus which referenced them. I then started Compressor and transcoded the Episode 94 stand-alone QT movie and got these two files as a result:
    "SOL-094-DVD PCM Audio-.aiff"
    "SOL-094-MPEG-2 60 min Fast Encode-.m2v"
Next I imported these assets into the DVDSP project and used them to build the menus. This went smoothly. But, when I run the DVD simulation in DVDSP, episode 94 shows serious artifacts which render it unwatchable.
QUESTIONS: What Compressor encoding settings should I be using? What is the meaning of "60 min" and "120 min" in the encode settings? If I use a "120 min" setting will the file be bigger or smaller?
As I set here after reading the similar problems people have posted and the solutions and work-arounds people have suggested I see that a number of processes are not responding, according to the activity monitor. Generally this means that something is broken, but what. After rebooting OS X, running Compressor and then DVDSP I see the following processes that are not responding:
    - compressor
    - coreaudiod
    - DSPX_AEncoderServer
    - DSPX_EncoderServer
    - two copies of MediaServer
When I exit DVDSP all but the top two disappear. What is "not responding" a symptom of?
I could sure use some help here. Thanks.
    Peace,
    Rob:-]

    Same here :
It seems this problem started after updating QuickTime Player 7.0.2
when I open the Simulator in DVD 3.0.2 I can see (in Activity Monitor) 2 processes coming up : DSPX_AEncoderServer and DSPX_Encoder.
Instantly they turn red and get (Hung) added.

  • Compressor process permanently "Not responding"

Hello all, While I usually lurk in the FCP forum ,this is a Compressor only question. I recently upgraded to both Leopard and FCS2 via a clean install, following all the suggestions on how to do so, and so far so good. I've been editing in FCP the past couple days no problem, but then I noticed something strange in Activity Monitor. I did a 5+ hour compression for DVD and had activity monitor open to keep an eye on processor load, but two Processes weren't responding: CompressorTranscoder and CompressorJobController. Even with that though, Compressor did it's job, and I had my file. However, even now, with neither Compressor nor Final Cut open, CompressorTranscoderX, yes now it has an X behind it, is still "not responding". I've restarted multiple times, and even forced quit the process, but it always comes back to not responding. Again, I can still use compressor, and it doesn't use any processor load at this point, but I would still like to know why it's even open and why it's not responding. Any suggestions?
    -Brian

I am having the same problem except that my files are not being exported. The time estimate says "Unknown Time Remaining" and I have waited for a long time now with no sign of hope. In my Activity Monitor it shows that my CPU is running at almost full capacity. I have tried restarting a few times but to no avail.

  • After install 10.5.7 update QMaster/Compressor hangs/not responding??

I find it funny that the 10.5.7 update was supposed to "improve OS stability". Well it looks like all it has done is made my Mac a worthless pile of pooh.
I have an older MacPro (2007) with two dual core processors (4 CPUs). I setup QMaster as QuickCluster with services (this is the only way Compressor will see it when I submit a batch). I selected 2 CPU instances. Hit "Submit" in Compressor and open the batch window, I see it "try" to parse out the video segments to 2 CPU instances, but get Audio successful and Video "Unknown" with a Service controller "error" and a progress bar for the main batch at 50% with time duration increasing (never decreases).
So I bring up Activity Monitor and find that coreaudio is "not responding" compressor is "not responding" and final cut pro is "not responding" ... oh joy!!
All this "used" to work before the 10.5.7 update, so what gives???
How to reproduce on my hardware:
    1. Open FCP
    2. Create a Sequence
    3. Send Sequence to Compressor
    4. In Compress I have a predefined H.264 setting and destination with "Job segmenting" checked, hit submit
    5. Open batch window, look at 50% mark with errors mentioned above
    NOT very happy.
    Rob

Compressor repair? Can you give me more details on what this is?
I had FCP to Compressor using QMaster (2 CPU instances) working in 10.5.6. It created some bizarre project name under FCP (i.e. 13DAA64E-8A34-4476-A12B-86) but would work. With 10.5.7 the same steps just hang/fail -- fail as in they Submitted batch never completes (I can leave it for 10 hours on a H.264 small duration clip of 30 seconds).
So now (with 10.5.7) the only way I can get Compressor and Qmaster to work is if I export sequence to QuickTime movie, close FCP, open Compressor create a new batch using the exported QT movie, set my settings/destination then submit. Which defeats the purpose of using a 2 Instance QMaster in the first place since I've had to introduce a Export to Quicktime in FCP. So essentially any benefit using 2 CPUs has been negated by the extra export step.
Sorry for the frustration/tone, but if I wanted this much hassle with Mac software/OS, I would have just stayed exclusively on a Windows based platform -- as of right now I see very little difference between the two companies, both are not responsive to correct obvious problems and both create more work than solutions. I gotta wonder why I even selected to use a Mac and why I successfully converted at 11 friends over from Windows to Mac - SSDD.
    Frustrated.

  • Compressor "Compressord not responding"

    Hi,
I just spend the last couple of days trying to get familiar with the qmaster and compresser when processing motion 2 files.
I have the Mac pro and the Powerbook hooked with Quadminister...so long everything is fine. But when I start a batch with a littel project I get a "compressord not responding" in the activity meter and the batch render fails.
I tried it in both ways with the Mac Pro as Cluster controller with Services and the other way with the G4 for Cluster Controlling and the Mac pro for as a Service node. Software on both Systems is equal. I get this error on the machine wich is defined as the Cluster Controller or more simply the machine from where I push the send button to start the batch.
I dont know whats going on..since it happens independently from the file format that I will render out.
Source locations are mounted...Quadminister seems to be okay on both engines..
Do you guys have a clue ?

Welcome to the great mystery of Compressor 2.x gentlemen. Many many of us have this problem and no one can find an answer. Search this forum for some of the other posts. You are not alone.
It's a real problem. This is causing real trouble for me.
My latest theory is that there is some kind of hidden buffer file used by compressord that does not delete at job end. Then when a new job comes along that requires a larger buffer, when the old one is full compressord just stalls.
Some guidance by Apple would be helpful, but none has been forthcoming.
This problem is causing serious problems to my workflow. I'm beyond frustrated with it. I'm ready to buy some third-party encoding software just to maintain reliability in my production capability.
I wish someone who knows a lot about how the guts of Compressor and its engines work would help debug and hopefully solve this problem.

  • Activity Monitor shows Compressor functions as (Not Responding)

    Hi Forum
I have noticed in Activity Monitor that I repeatedly get these messages in red:
    CompressorJobController (Not Responding
    qmasterqd (Not Responding)
    CompressorTranscoderX (Not Responding)
    ContentController (Not Responding)
    Qmaster Task Service (Not Responding)
I have been force quitting them and then they continue to show up even if I don't have compressor open.
I compressed a 40min HD at 800kbs last night - I woke in the middle of the night thinking it would be done and it was only half way done. I opened Activity monitor to see what was going on. It said that the these functions were (Not Responding). But i noticed activity in the cpu column and in the threads and processes window. I decided to see if it was really hung. I let it go till morning. I finished in about 8 hours. Can this be true?
I am on the top of the line 17inch Macbook Pro. It seems like there are some anomalies that I don't understand. Should I disregard these recurring functions that say they aren't responding?
    thanks
    david

Here is some investigation I did, maybe someone can use this!?
While everything is running and suddenly all **** breaks loose, or rather just freezes in time.
Open Activity Monitor and select CompressorTranscoder and click the Inspect icon, you will get the process details and check the 'Open Files and Ports' tab.. There is where you will find all the files this process needs!! Here is the issue! you will notice some temporary and cache items,. open the terminal and using commands navigate to those file locations and Voila!! you see those files dont exist!! thats why this service has hanged.. The apple team needs to figure out how these files got closed without compressorTranscoder knowing about it!! BUG BUG BUG!!!

  • Compressor not working but i'm not running FCP

Hello, had a search for this but couldn't see anything on this particular topic.
My MacBook Pro has started running very slowly. I have just upgraded to Photoshop CS4 and the comp is running really slowly but when i've looked in activity monitor i can see that Compressor TranscoderX is not responding. I have no idea why it is running as i'm not using final cut at the same time as photoshop and when i export .mov files from ps i don't ever compress them.
Anyone any thoughts? I don't actually need compressor as far as i know so should i just lob it in the trash.
    Any help gratefully received, cheers.

  • CompressorTranscoder only using 200% and "not responding"

I'm new to Compressor and am using it to convert a very large batch of video files. All is well--the conversions are successful--and yet Activity Monitor shows CompressorTranscoder never going over 200% CPU usage, and I'm on a quad-core (single-processor) Mac Pro. Also, CompressorTranscoder is listed as "not responding." I saw other threads about that, but I wasn't sure if my situation was exactly the same, or what to make of it.
So, my questions: is there a setting I should change so that Compressor will use all four cores? Is the red "not responding" message in Activity Monitor cause for concern? Do you have any other tips for getting Compressor to work as fast as possible?
    Thanks in advance.

  • CompressorTranscoderX (Not Responding) After Reboot

Hmmm... I'm not sure what to make of this:
After installing FCS 3 (FCP 7, etc.), and a reboot, I see a dozen or so Compressor-related processes, even though I haven't used Compressor since that reboot. Many of them are "CompressorTranscoderX" and they are all labeled "(Not Responding)."
I had been doing some Compressor work on my cluster (all on my 8-processor machine), but that was before the reboot.
    Should I "quit" those processes?

Not sure exactly why this happens... but I noticed this with any installation of FCS2 on 10.5, never tried FCS3 though, but it sounds like the same thing.
Even though they say not responding, I haven't noticed this causing any problems. I know it's weird to see these processes red, but it seemed to be the norm in 10.5.
If you can encode normally and without issues, I wouldnt worry about it.
I have noticed in 10.6 this issue doesn't exist. None of the processes are red. Why, I have no idea.

  • CompressorJobController (Not Responding)

I'm getting this in Activity Monitor as well as: CompressorTranscoder (Not Responding)
I'm outputting an H.264 file from a DV timeline in Final Cut 7, which is going very slowly considering I'm using an 8-core Intel Mac Pro with 8GB of RAM
Further down in Activity Monitor, I also have: UserEventAgent (Not Responding)
    Does anybody know ***?

Compressor Repair should fix this. It's not a permanent fix so the services will go back to "not responding" after a while but it should at least make your current encoding session faster.

  • Fcsvr_ldsd Not Responding

For some reason Activity Monitor is showing fcsvr_ldsd (server engine daemon) as not responding, even after a reboot and little activity. The process doesn't hang immediately after starting FCSvr, but after a certain amount of time passes. I've checked it out after hours when no one else is around, so no one is uploading or searching at the time.
Another symptom is slow starts of the FCSvr Client from the server itself, even though other operations (search, admin) seem to be okay once the login window comes up. Transcode operations are failing in the Job log with the error:
    ERROR: EREQERROR
Compressor job resulted in error - Failed: 3x HOST [FCS01.local] error: NewMovieFromFile failed -606
A reboot has cleared the Compressor error for now, but fcsvr_ldsd is still red. We were having search performance problems this week as well, so I ran the postgreSQL "vacuum analyze" to compact the database. Searches picked up performance, but I saw no benefit to the hung process in Activity Monitor.
One last thing: every time I start up the FCSvr from System Preferences, I get an error:
There was an error communicating with the server. Database is not running, please start up the database server.
FCS starts anyway and seems to function normally (current problems excepting, of course). It's odd but hasn't given me any trouble, so it's unclear whether the startup problem is related to the hung engine.
Has anyone else seen problems of this sort? I've found plenty of tips about Compressor Transcode, but there's not much on the 'Net about fcsvr_ldsd. I think I've tripled the number of times it's been posted to a board or blog just by writing this question.

  • Multiple Instances not responding

Whenever I have the number of instances set to more than 1 for compressor, they do not respond.
For example if I set 1 instance, the export works fine.
If make 3 instances the first 1 works but the other 2 do not.
Here is what the activity viewer is showing so you get what I mean.

  • Compressord (Not Responding)

whenever I use compressor, it is always at the top of %cpu in Activity Monitor in red letters

That happens now and then, I don't think it is anything to worry about. As long as your batch compression jobs finish it's a difference that makes no difference (in my opinion). I suspect that the "not responding" message just means that the background compressor demon ("compressord") is very busy and not paying much attention to anyone else.

  • Render Freeze/Crash at the end - program not responding

    Hi guys
Im at my end with this problem and would appreciate a solution or explination to the problem im having.
when i render my project for final output it renders all frames and gets to the end on the progress bar but as soon as it seems to finish it freezes. So it does not seem to finalize. (program goes into "not responding") i have left it for up to 4 hours and still it simply hangs. this is happening with all projects and scenes regardless of the resolution or memory allocation.
im running CS4 with windows 7 and have version 9.0.3 of After Effects. im also using the latest optical flares plugin with all updates. my hardware is Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU [email protected]   2.66GHz
insalled RAM is 4GB with 3.24GB usable
    32 bit operating system
Graphics card is NVIDIA Ge-Force GTX285 with 2GB of independant memory
Please help me find some path to solve this problem
    thank you

With only 4 GB RAM, you shouldn't be using multiprocessing.  If it's on, turn it off.  If you're using Open GL to accelerate rendering, turn that off too:  it rarely helps, and often hurts.  Your problem might be solved that easily.
But since you're on AE 9, it the footage you use could also be the problem.  Most commonly it would be footage from XDCams, HDV cameras and DSLRs.  AE 10 solved the problem, but that won't help you right now.  However, a reply I used to give all the time on the Creative COW may still still apply:
    Dave's Stock Answer #1:
If the footage you imported into AE is any kind of the following -- footage in an HDV acquisition codec, MPEG1, MPEG2, AVCHD, mp4, mts, m2t, H.261 or H.264 -- you need to convert it to a different codec.
These kinds of footage use temporal, or interframe compression. They have keyframes at regular intervals, containing complete frame information.  However, the frames in between do NOT have complete information.  Interframe codecs toss out duplicated information.
In order to maintain peak rendering efficiency, AE needs complete information for each and every frame. But because these kinds of footage contain only partial information, AE freaks out, resulting in a wide variety of problems.
I'm a Mac guy, so I like to convert to Quicktime movies in the Animation or PNG codecs; both are lossless.  I'll use Apple's Compressor, Adobe Media Encoder or Quicktime Pro to do it.
