Compressor Pal to NTSC - issues - will progressive help?

I am trying to optimise a pal - to ntsc conversion. Source footage is DV tape.
I realise that there is always a quality hit - i have been using compressor following Anton Lineker's excellent article from Aussie Macworld mar 06 - on slow pal to ntsc conversion.
Am wondering if ,when using the encoder options in compressor, going progressive scan over deinterlaced will help up the quality - at the moment my final output is getting some serious "banding" when any motion happens on screen (eg moving pictureframes have "slat blind" edging while my original pal output maintains a sharp edge on the moving picture frame)- could this be an interlacing issue via the encoder in compressor?
and will progressive play out on many tvs around the world?

You may want to contact Roger Anderson at http://www.innobits.se/ssl/email_us.php . I understand that his new version of Bitvice may be able to solve your conversion issues.
You can download a demo version of this software, ( http://www.innobits.se/ssl/download.php ) to see if it solves your problems. I know that he has incorporated a new set of algorithms to scale between different source like NTSC to PAL and back as well as other new capabilities.

  • PAL to NTSC ? a little help please!

Hi. I have read several topics but couldn't really find an appropriate answer to my question.
    I am trying to:
I live in Switzerland where we use the PAL system. So I have a PAL video-camera.
I am trying to create an NTSC movie to send to friends in the US!
I understand about the part where you can export the movie to NTSC format.
    My problem is:
    1) Proportions!! PAL is: 720x576 and NTSC is: 720x480!
The height is shorter so when I export, the image is squeezed!
Is there a way to "CROP" the image instead of having the image squeezed ?
    2) I also saw that you can keep your proportions while exporting to NTSC, but then what will happen when someone uses a NTSC TV to watch movie. Will it squeeze the image, or will it add black stripes at the top and bottom?
    3) I thought if my iMovie file was NTSC that it would crop the image when I do the import from my camera. But it doesn't work, and plus .. it transforms the NTSC standard to PAL automatically. So you can't even chose the format!
Any ideas, suggestions ? How could I do it? I am a bit lost! MANY thanks! & kind regards,
    Stephanie

default settings (no cropping) to export as NTSC, but it didn't work out.
What was the problem then? How did it not work out??
The following page has info how to preserve correct aspect ratio when converting video:
    http://www.iki.fi/znark/video/conversion/
For example, Section 3.2.2 has instructions for PAL to NTSC conversion:
PAL 720x576 must be resampled to 729x486, then cropped to the final 720x480 NTSC resolution.
I haven't tested whether JES Deinterlacer does the conversion along those lines (very few applications do these things right but luckily almost no one notices that!!) but in my tests the results have been very good.
If it is NTSC, why is it [iDVD] using PAL size ?
Notice that iDVD's PAL/NTSC setting takes effect only for new projects.

  • If my screen is cracked but im having other issues, will apple help me?

I've had a cracked screen for a while but recently my side button wont let me put it on vibrate, my top button doesnt work, and there's a constant light coming from the camera on the back. Will apple help me fix it or do I have to wait for my upgrade?

Apple's fix will consist of replacing your iPhone with a refurbished one, at a cost to you of about half that of a new model. This assumes they accept yours for that program but I have not heard of any instances in which they refused.

  • PAL to NTSC in DVDSP

    Hi Guys
We have a PAL disc which we buit in DVDSP.
How do we create an NTSC version of the same disc?
    Thanks!

    Hi
You must first transcode your movie/s from PAL to NTSC using Compressor standard conversion prests or some other third party soft like Nattress FCP plugin.
You must start a new NTSC DVDSP project and rebuild everything from scratch, creating the new menus graphics and/or movies using the NTSC size.
Sorry but there is no way to just change a project from PAL to NTSC.
    Hope that helps !

  • Moving QT from PAL to NTSC...HELP!

This is very likely to be a QT or OSx problem. Please don't pay attention to the "Logic Pro" references if you are not a Logic user, your help will be welcome!
Just moved from the UK to the US, and in the middle scoring a film. I'm simply trying to play the picture back via the "firewire" option in the video prefs of Logic.
My QT file is "DV/DVCPRO-NTSC" and its size is 720x480, as suggested in the manual.
There is nothing PAL in my settings. Sound editors all around me are using the very same files on NTSC TV-monitors etc without any trouble.
I have changed my time Zone from one place to the other etc as well...before you ask...
THe computer, however, (G5) is still living in PAL, I believe, because when opening the QT file outside of Logic, it sees it as baing DV/DVCPRO...etc BUT as having only 25 frames /sec....instead of the 29.97fps it actually runs at.
I feel this may be a QT or "general set up" setting which has to be changed, but any help help would be greatly appreciated!
    THanks in advance.

    Denis,
Compressor standard conversion works best with progressive, iframe based material. The one tool that really does a great job (especially with interlaced material) using enhanced and more intelligent standard conversion algorithms remains [Nattress|http://www.nattress.com/Products/standardsconversion/standardsconvers ion.htm].
Having said that, Compressor can still do a decent job.

  • NTSC to PAL (from 29fps to 25fps) need help

    Hey Folks,
I read this post here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2675891
And I wasn't able to reply to it since it was closed... so here's my situation. I shot a music video on my Sony TRV-19 camcorder @ 29fps (not positive if it's Progressive or Interlaced, though my guess is Interlaced) and the lable in Europe needs it in PAL @ 25fps... so what I'm doing now is converting it through compressor @ the PAL settings 720/576 25fps...
Will I be able to view the PAL format on my computer? I'm in Canada now. What can I do to get that format to play properly in Europe, without any scanlines and loss of quality?
Is anyone willing to help me out? Appreciate your type folks.
    my best
    -Joey

I wouldn't recommend using Compressor. You might consider Nattress Standards Conversion.

  • PAL to NTSC Audio Sync Issues

    Hi All,
I've searched through the forums and have found some similar issues but nothing exactly like this.
I am editing a music concert that was shot in PAL. The audio was also recorded separately and has been edited and mixed in ProTools.
When I take the exported audio and put it into my PAL timeline, it drifts out of sync with the video as expected. My questions are:
    1) How should the audio be exported to match up to my PAL timeline?
    2) When we convert to NTSC, I will use the Nattress filters for video, but what do i need to be concerned about re: the audio?
    Thanks big time,
    Jason

Here's what I don't understand - some guys captured this concert in two ways - a PAL camera (and associated audio) and then some sort of audio recording, a believe a DAT.
They gave us PAL tapes which we have captured, and then ProTools audio files. Theoretically everything should match up at this point (the audio from the cameras and the audio from the recorder should be the same, right?)...
Why would it be that after changing the MIXES (but not shortening or lengthening the audio), exporting from ProTools, and then laying them into the FCP track (syncing up to the first beat of a song, etc), they audio drifts? Not bad, about 1 1/2 seconds in 6 1/2 min of footage.. but nonetheless, this is a HUGE pain.
Given this is a music DVD and the artist is a major musical stickler, changing the audio has a ZERO percent chance of being acceptable...
Thanks again for your help -

  • PAL versus NTSC will both play in a US blu-ray player/HDTV?

I'm sure I could test this and find out, but I'm sure someone has a quick answer.  If my assets are 720 X 576 I have heard that Encore re-sizing will create some quality issues.  Would I be better off just editing this in Premiere Pro and Saving in the same 720 X 576 format, burning it to a 25 gb Blu-Ray disk in Encore and then playing it in my Blu-Ray player as is, or would this not work and the asset would have to be re-sized to 720 X 480?

    Hi.
    A few things.
1 - PAL BluRay is frankly a mess. you cannot use 25p, only 50i and support is sporadic as it just is not in the BluRay specs.
2 - For universal BluRay, you must use either 60i, 30p or 24p for it to work on US/Japanese players.
3 - 720x576 is not BluRay spec - it is SD. Whilst you can use 720x576, it is not recommended as few players will cope with this.
You definitely do not want to scale this (upres) in Encore. Or PPro. It will look like a dogs dinner.
4 - Converting from PAL to NTSC involves more than scaling - the frame rate has to be altered from 25 to 29.97 (30 actually, but we're not talking about timecodes & drop/non drop frame counts now )
It needs to be done properly - Jeff Bellune has a superb tutorial on acheiving this with open source software at http://bellunevideo.com/tutlist.php
    Hope this helps

  • Will Apple help me with this issue?

    Dear Sir or Madam,
I am a student in China, I really need your help, my iphone now problems bothers me! HELP ME PLEASE!!!
As I bought my iPhone 4s(16GB,White) in the USA from Sprint, full price with tax,  unlocked ,it was excepted to be a global phone. But now I come across with some problems in China  using local carrier. Now I am in China, not the normal use of the phone, I rely on odd jobs to earn, very not easy, English is not my mother tongue, maybe there are many grammatical mistakes, I hope you'll forgive me! Mobile phone can not be used normally I am very sad, I can not contact the parents and friends, can not let them worry about me, I've tried all means, including the upgrade to 6.1, but still can not solve the problem, I think maybe I am in China, so can not be used normally, at this moment I am very anxious, because of the time difference, it is later I can send mail, you can see it, please help me, a Chinese student's request!
I tried all the possible solutions from the Internet, and the Official solution offered by Apple (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4459), but it doesn't seem to work.
Will Apple help me with this issue? Please do.THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

We are not Apple, and Apple does not unlock phones. Sprint will unlock phones, but you have to qualify. One of the qualifications is to have been a customer in good standing for a period of time. You can check their website for what that is. After that, they can unlock the GSM side of the phone for International use, that is it. If you are on a CDMA carrier, then it cannot be unlocked. Are you trying to use a local SIM card in China?
Your only option is to contact Sprint to see if you qualify for an unlock. Only they can unlock it. Sprint is one of the poorest choices to take to another country.

    Hi there!
Yes, same problem too; I've already sent an email to apple support and just received a very vague and unpractical response with "call apple support in your country" as main advice. I've obviously emailed back stating that I need a clearer response and I don not have any intention to spend money calling for support when updates is a free tool. I do also believe this is a probem generated on Apple's end, I just wish they learned to say "sorry, it's us;  working on it!"

  • PAL/NTSC ISSUES

I produce my movies in PAL for Europe and NZ and, for the USA, convert to NTSC- not always since most modern DVD players will play both.
Two questions have come up for which I would very much appreciate some advice.
The first is, if I have edited the movies in PAL and then just burn them on a DVD in NTSC, will that be sufficient for them to play on a DVD player that only takes NTSC? Obviously this would save considerable time compared to having to convert the movies first and then also redo the DVD.
The second question is we have a wedding DVD for which we have copyright and which was shot in PAL. We have made a disk image to burn extra copies which works fine but also would like to convert the image or original DVD into NTSC for a few copies. Is this possible?

Thanks for your prompt reply Bengt.
For the first conversion (a DVD containing 5 movies), I converted two movies from PAL to NTSC(and at the same time from 4:3 to Widescreen) in the iMovie window and using the Share menu. The other three were similarly converted but via Export in the Quicktime window menu. I think both menus are the same.
I saved all five movies on the Desktop for ease of access and then created a new IDVD project, imported the five movies and then set about redoing the whole DVD from scratch but in NTSC mode. I then saved as a disk image and burned the disk in Disk Utility. All of this seemed to work fine(apart from finding two faulty disks in my Verbatim pack, but the third one was OK) and the quality also seemed OK.
I did download the JES Interlacer but have not yet tried it. This is what JES said: +You cannot convert an iDVD project from one format to another. For example, if you want to make a copy of a disc you created in the United States (using NTSC video) and send it to relatives in Europe, you must export all of the movies from iMovie or Final Cut Pro in PAL format. Then you must set iDVD to PAL and create a new project.+
Are you saying that JES would have given a better result than the iMovie Share and/or Quicktime Export?
JES seems to be saying I cannot convert my PAL disk image into NTSC. I do not have FCP and have only the DVD from which I created a Disk Image in Disk Utility. Any further thoughts?
Thanks again for your time and advice.
    Cheers, Tom.

  • PAL to NTSC conversion in compressor

i need to create a n NTSC dvd for a client so i need to convert my QT file to NTSC in compressor.
Now i used the standard PAL to NTSC preset but the final file seems to be huge compared to the PAL M2V i created for the PAL version of the DVD and also still seems to be complete QT file? jot a M2V and AC3 file for use in DVDSPro.
Anyone have a workflow for the conversion in Compressor (please not the Natress conversion as it really seems so confusing to me)
    Many thanks

    Well, not that fast...
If I was going to do it again I would proceed as I did recently i.e.
Use toast to get a NTSC DVD (after accepting transcoding by Toast)
Use DVDxDV (or equivalent, this is what I use) or MPEG streamclip to extract a .mov file corresponding to your DVD files (if several VTS, DVDxDV is doing a very good job for each separated parts)
Then, the resulting .mov file that you can play in QT can be imported ditrectly (video and sound) into FCP for further editing, and compression via compressor to get mv2 and ac3 that you can use into DVDSP
May not be the typical professionnal way...but it works.

  • PAL or NTSC for international distribution?

Hi everybody, we have a 5 hrs film shot and edited in Premiere Pro CS6 in HD pal, 50fps, 16:9  intended for international distribution on 2 double layer DVDs. How should we best author it to guarantee worldwide compatibility and best possible quality? PAL or NTSC? There is no budget to press both, PAL and NTSC DVDs. Thanks for your help!!!

    NTSC every time.
All PAL players these days will happily output NTSC content either as true NTSC (by running an on-the-fly standards conversion in the video decoder chips) or else as PAL-60.
Very few NTSC players will output PAL in any form.
Your biggest problem will be standards converting your 50i footage into 29.97.
    EDIT.
Here's a great tip for you.
Do not ever shoot at 25 fps in any shape, way or form if you need international release. Use 24p instead - and when the time comes to burn a DVD all you need to do is scale it down & render to DV 24p widescreen from Adobe Media Encoder. All will be fine, and you can use fully progressive images all the way through.
    Pros:
24p footage is universal, 25p is not spec compliant, must be interlaced & will only work in PAL regions.
24p will play - in an upscaling player (such as a modern Universal, or a good BluRay player) at the encoded rate (Hollywood have been pulling this trick for years now) and in a non-upscaling player it will automatically pull to 29.97 with no intervention needed from the user.
    Cons.
None that immediately come to mind - although of course 24p footage has it's own issues but these are outweighed by not having to standards convert.
    Why this is needed.
Because although most US discs will play in PAL players, either as pure NTSC or PAL-60, the reverse is not true and even when you can find a US player that will handle a 25i stream, you will run into difficulties with the display because the mains is at the wrong frequency (60Hz instead of 50Hz) and the image will be garbled, black & white or missing altogether. A study by Sony showed that perhaps 1/20 players can output PAL frame rates properly in NTSC regions.

  • Hdr-hc3 problems! Interlace? PAL to NTSC

Hello. I am having problems editing a video shot in Sony hdr-hc3 PAL version. I captured in hdv and edited. In the timeline I put 25 frames per second. 1440 x 1080. 16x9... Compression HDV 1080i50
Well, I exported everything. Export/Current Settings. Then I burnt a dvd with dvd studio pro and when I look the video in the TV it looks really really interlaced. Everytime there is movement, the image looks double. Well, I have tried with after effects to remove the pull down but it's not useful. It seems it's not really a interlace problem because when I say to guess pulldown... it doesn't appear anything. I also tried with cinema tools... i did the reverse telecine... but doesnt work... or at least i dont have any idea what i have to do...
I also tried with compressor but the same problem... I dont know if I have to do something in final cut, after i export from final cut... or what i have to do with this problem. The motion looks horrible. HELP PLEASE!
    Thanks a lot!

As a last resort (in case you are stuck which is a common fate of most users when dealing with this horrible legacy of NTSC frame rates) you have a simple solution that will produce flawless, no hiccups conversion from PAL to NTSC. You will need sufficient space, patience and willingness to accept 4% change in pitch.
    a) edit your footage in 25 progressive. Export it as image sequence. Export audio separately.
    b) In QTP import image sequence to NTSC frame rate 23.976. Add your audio (SCALED) to your movie.
    c) Import your movie to 23.976 FCP sequence.
    d) export it NTSC mpg2, which will add standard pulldown to bring it to 29.97.
(all this can presumably be done in FCP, if only one could figure out how!)
(Note to Apple. Please kindly note that 24 is not 23.98 nor it is 23.976, Your documentation is all over the place with no rhyme or reason. 24 can mean (FTC, QT) 24 or 23.976. Strangely 23.98 seems to be always used to denote 23.976. This is not nice nor professional and is awfully confusing)
