Compressor Problem

Hi, my compressor times are out of control. Its taken 13 hours to compress 90 minutes of footage coming directly from final cut pro 7. Im using compressor 3.5 on reasonably new MacBook Pro which is hooked up to external usb 2 harddrive. Is this time normal? I hope not. in the past it was taken 6 to 7 hours for 90 minutes of footage using the best quality DVD 90 settings. Maybe i need to change some settings? Can someone please let me know what im doing wrong? Its makes my workflow so much longer. Thanks.

Background encoding from FCP does tend to be pretty slow on my end as well. I would recommend exporting a Quicktime movie file from FCP, then send that to Compressor and see if that speeds things up. If you keep the Quicktime file as a self-contained, then you have a safe master should something happen to your FCP project.
The USB 2 connection could also be a factor in the slow encode time as well. But it's still wise to keep your sources and destinations separate, unless you're using a RAID.

  • Jerky Export - FCP or Compressor Problem?

I have a 20-second sequence using the maximum zoom in. The background trees swaying in the breeze are "bumpy" or seem to be dropping frames once exported and burned to DVD. It seems the video in full zoom can't keep up with them. Yet the scene looks fine when played in Final Cut Pro, which does not display any dropped frames or struggling to produce smooth video in this sequence. But once exported to Compression it gets rough in spots and gives the jumpy illusion of dropping frames.
Not sure if it's a FCP or Compressor problem. Any suggestions?

Translation problem on your end or ours?
Burn to DVD? You mean you encoded to MPEF2 for playback on a set top DVD or you burned your QT to a DVD? H-U-G-E difference.
MPEG2 hates that kind of detail and fine motion. Of course it's going to skip and jump unless you very carefully tweak the encoding settings. Very carefully. There are entire books written on how to do that, how to get the best possible compression. The defaults in Compressor just don't do it for you, they are strictly generic but totally applicable to 90% of what you throw at it.

  • Possible Compressor problem solved....

So, after noticing that qmaster was not listed in the running processes (and getting the dreaded, no cluster found in Compressor) I tried something very simple that seemed to work....I started "Apple Qmaster" under Applications. Behold...compressor works again!!! Try and see if it works on your computer! I believe the problem is, qmaster is not starting correctly when the computers starts up, and compressor can't seem to start it itself (which is dumb Apple, because I don't want qmaster running until I actually need it!)
    Matthew

Sorry for not being clear. Remained idle = did not compress. No processor activity. No change of the progress bar in the Batch Monitor and no new file resulting from the expected activity. I did not check if Qmaster was running, will do so next time I submit.
As for the Qmaster files clogging /var/spool/qmaster, I did not use Terminal to remove them. There is an excellent post by scutdog here and I followed his advice. It helped in removing a job that was clogging the pipeline but the next job after it behaved the same way and I think I will give myself some rest now.

  • Bringing HDV into compressor problem

I'm having a problem compressing a HDV file straight out of FCP from my sequence... and I'm hoping someone can point me to some info for help.
I am done editing my HDV footage, and my sequence and project are set to the correct HDV settings. Now when I export from my sequence, to Compressor, the footage is set to SD settings automatically in Compressor. I just don't get it.
Now, if I export from FCP as a quicktime movie and create a new HDV file, then import that file into Compressor everything is cool.
Can I avoid having to export using quicktime movie, and just go directly to Compressor.
My final file from compressor is H264 (480x270)
    Any advise would be awesome...
    Thanks

have had similar issues way back as exporting to COMPRESSOR from FCP TIMELINE... just locks up after a while.
Suggest workaround with FCS 2 workflow, :
    • export as SELF CONTAINED QT movie (transient file for your work flow) - suggest PRORESS 422 - seems to run faster in COMPRESSOR rater than HDV LGOP format. (others will debate this).
    • use above to INPUT into COMPRESSOR
    • purge transient movie when transcode from compressor ok.
    works for me.

  • Compressor problems

I have been trying to compress a HD file but with studio 2 is impossible. A 4 sec clip shows to be hours to compress. When I tried to cancel the file, it does not cancel. I have re-start mac pro several times and the clusters don't dissapear. I did not have that problem with Studio 1. I have followed the trouble shooting segments that apple offers, but noothing. The software is update it, but nothing happens. What is left for me to do??
    Please help!!!

wanna add some detail to your post such as:
    • the workflow you are doing (i.e. from FCP timeline or ojects added directly to COMPRESSOR.APP)
    • using QMASTER?
    • what is/are the OUTPUT/final "HD codecs" you are trying to transcoding
    • what is you working /transient codec (for example in FCP or SHAKE or something)
    • what is you orginal footage is the above is true.
    • how are you invoking COMPRESSOR
    • are any of the INOUT OBJECTS file mounted on anework or just local. Same for OUTPUT objects.
    • anything in the /var/logs (use /applications/utilities/console.app)
    • what is the status of COMPRESSOR tasks in the ACTVITY MONITOR... busy, idle????
    • anything else you think would help.
BY "cancelling the file" do you mean trying to terminate the COMPRESSOR transaction in the BATCH MONTOR?
post and hopefully some of us have some ideas for you.

  • Compressor Problem suddenly -- why?

Am new to Mac and FCP, just cut a 40-something minute documentary, am trying to export a Quicktime h.264 version using compressor, in order to send to my transcriber. I did this before easily at the start of the project, when I compressed 18 hours of interviews, an hour at at time, to H.264 100 kbps, no problem.
Now that I have an edited show, when I try to encode, I get a FAIL message each time saying "QuickTime Error: -50."
I've searched posts here and came across some people talking about a similar problem but have been unable to find any solution that's worked for me (one suggested fixing permissions, rebooting, seeting in/out points, and then trying again, but that hasn't helped).
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Video Compressor Problem

We are trying to compress using compressor. We have compressed many other videos exporting from Final cut 6.06 to compressor. We have also compressed several videos since with no problem. This one video comes up after an 8 hour compression with only the audio files compressed. Video compressed files are no where to be found. We have tried different directories and file names and have done it 15 times and still only get audio files. The only other strange thing with this final cut project is when we click render all, now it comes up with an exclamation point and said ";Not Found"; There is nothing left to render because it was previously done. Maybe this has something to do with compressor not being able to see the video.
    Any help would be appreciated.

What kind of files are the original clips? Sounds like theres something corrupt with an element of the project. I would check the clips independently and maybe re-export them.
Try exporting the final timeline at 50% or 25% of the dimensions, You can do more tests, faster. See where its hanging up, how far into the sequence? You might be able to investigate further.
    good luck.

  • Compressor problems with software update

Software update has downloaded and installed once or more every day since last week thursday!
nothing works, the software update installs 2.01 compressor and QTmaster over and over again.
DVD Studio Pro is a mess...
How can I make software update wasting my time and bandwidth?
    Message was edited by: Host

I was experiencing this same problem with the 3.02 update. It look like I was finally able to resolve it by manually downloading the compressor update and installing it instead of using software update. I only made the change today, but so far software update seems to recognize that I'm up-to-date.

  • Compressor problem.  transcode failed

    Hi,
I'm using Compressor to transcode H.264 footage from a Canon DSLR to apple prorez 422 LT.  Dragged in several clips to compressor, added settings and destination.  Hit submit.  Went to sleep. Came back in morning and transcode had FAILED.  Tried again with a very short clip.  No progress was made in "time remaining" window -- no time even came up, and the progress bar did not start turning blue at all.  Finally i cancelled the operation.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thank you,
    Eve

If you continue to get the 3X Crash error after following the advice you've got in this thread, my suggestion would be to download another one of Digital Rebellion's products – Pro Maintenance Tools. PMT has a Crash Analyzer that reports causes and recommendations. It's a paid app (suite of apps) but you can download a short trial.
The error means that the Compressor Transcoder has failed (ya think?) and it's not one of the more obvious ones to sort. The one time I had it was fixed by uninstalling Perian; I must have read about a conflict somewhere,

  • Compressor Problem - Computer Shuts Down

I am trying to export a relatively large Motion file using Compressor. The file is approximately 4.5 minutes in length. The last few attempts, a black message appeared on the screen (with 80%+ of the file compressed), and it shuts down the computer. The computer if a Quad G5, with 4GB of RAM. Any idea what can be causing this?

    Hi Jerry,
    Quick Time Version: 7.1.5
    FCP Version: 5.1.4
    Compressor Version: 2.3
    OS: OSX 10.4.9
The settings we're currently using is: a Telestream plug-in for Mac.
The export setting are for WMV format, bit rate 3000 NBS, CBR. The project was failing with different pre-sets that we tried.
The Motion project is about 4.5 minutes in length and comprises many different elements - including pics, videos, titles, effects. THe resoltion is set for 1360x768.
DO you need any ther info? I appreciate your help.

  • Exporting using Compressor problem

I have a 3 minute Motion sequence that I can't export in Compressor - it takes over 5 hours to get halfway through the process. It looks as though Compressor has crashed, it goes so slow.
Basically I need to make a DVD in DVDSP, urgently. I exported as an H264 Quicktime, which was a breeze, but that comes up as incompatible format when I import this asset into DVDSP.
What to do? Another CODEC? What MPEG 2 setting might work in Compressor?

I should add I've read a few posts hinting that Motion is pretty rubbish at lengths of 3 minutes and when you have masks, particles, replicators and a load of images (as I have) it's hard to export. I didn't know that - the manual doesn't warn us!!
Does rendering in Motion help with the export, or does that just help with smooth playback in Motion itself?
I exported the file as 10 bit uncompressed, just to see how big that .mov was, and it comes in at 4.3Gb. Hopefully that gives readers of this thread an idea.

  • Destination u have specified does not have read/ write access- FCP 7 to Compressor problem!

    Hello everyone,
I finally got a video finished in FCP 7, and sent it to Compressor.
When I try to add a templete (any template, but particularly the Youtube), I get a red || Source    ! || message and when I hit the submit button I see: "The destination you have specified does not have read/ write access. Check to see if the folder is set to read-only, or check your write privileges."
    What the?
I'm using Apple ProRes 422 files.
I tried looking at the video files themselves, with Control + I. It looks like I have "Read & Write" access to me. I'm not sure what to do.
I also tried looking in my preferences for Final Cut Pro stuff, and it was empty, so nothing to erase. I also repaired disk permissions with the Utility application.
    Well, thanks for any help.

I haven't tried to save to any directory.
As soon as I send the sequence from Final Cut to Compressor, I am prompted to drag the settings to the destination... but it won't let me submit it for the "read/ write" reasons above.
So I never get the opportunity to save it, I just close out Compressor and go back to Final Cut Pro.
I'm wondering if it has something to do with the scratch disk files. I converted the MOV files into ProRes files and keep them in my documents, then I just dragged and dropped them into the browser. I'm wondering if somehow this is affecting things, because I can't even find a scratch disk folder with files inside.
I also tried to look at my Final Cut Pro preferences file, but I had no idea what I was looking at so I just left it alone.
I really appreciate this by the way.

  • Major Compressor Problems

I have been successfully using Compressor 2 on my Dual G5, clustered with my MBP. These last couple days, I have been trying to export HDV from FCP
to MPEG2 using compressor. The first try, it got one movie right, the other two movies exported as m2v, but all the media was offline. Now, even though I am
selecting my external drives as the output destination, Compressor is filling my boot drive, and I can't find the files. I had 6gb left on it when I tried to
start another batch (this time with self contained movies) after a few minutes, my boot drive had no space left, and I couldn't select my G5 in the cluster
drop down. I have no idea where or what the files are. I need some serious help.

    Try This.
    Using Spotlight, type in Compressor.
You will get a list of files etc. Look for any that include "batch" in the string. Theses are the files that Compressor keeps in the History window, that will allow to reencode a previous job w/o dragging the QT file back in again.
Once you find them you can delete them. Careful not to delete any other files in the process.
I hand to re-install 2.01 this weekend after FCP 5.1 and Compressor 2.1 etal. gave me too many troubles to list.
During the frustrating process of this re-install I found all of these files and learned thier purpose.
Also got a chance to read the entire manual this weekend as well.
    Hope this helps.

  • NTSC/PAL, FCP and Compressor problems

I need help. I use a Sony camera (HDR CX560) bought in US with NTSC as standard. I live in Europe and would like to burn a DVD for my Blue-Ray player showing it on my PAL TV.
    The footage is 1080i, 1920x1080, 29,97 fps.
I have tried several different ways of achieving good results, but with no luck:
    1. Editing in Final Cut Pro with original specs (1080i, 29,97). The result showing in FCP viewer is not perfect, but quite good. A little bit of stuttering and a bit blury pictures. I have tried "Send to Compressor...", selected MPEG-2 for DVD in Compressor (customized to 16:9 TV format). The process stops after a minute - a file is being created, but only the first 30 seconds of the movie is visible. I also tried Share>Export file using Compressor settings. The file created does not have acceptable quality, mostly bescause of very disturbing stripes. I also tried Share>Master file but the output is not good enough (using codec Apple ProRes422 (HQ) - same stripes.
    2. Editing in Final Cut Pro with european standard (1080i, 25i). The result in FCP viewer is good with one exception - a lot of stuttering images while panning. I tried all the output/share alternatives mentioned above, with poor result.
    I use OS X 10.8.3, Final Cut Pro X 10.0.8 and Compressor 4.0.7
    Can anyone help?

    Double post.

    Can anybody help me, please?

Export to media and look at the file. Is it OK?
    Can you answer this please?
Your original media is 720p and you're blowing it up to 1080p? Don't do that.
