Compressor stalls at 0:00:01 or 0:00:00 remaining

I'm using FCP 7.0.2 and sending a minute-long edit to compressor 3.5.2. I use the mpeg 2 program stream setting and everything seems to go fine until the 'remaining' countdown gets to :01 or :00.
From that point it just, well, sits there. For hours if I let it. There's no error message as such, but when I quit the background process and check the file destination it leaves an unreadable file that is huge. On the last try, after about twenty minutes of doing nothing, the file was 44gigs, the largest I've seen was over a hundred gigs so it seems like it's continuously writing even as it seems stuck.
I've had this setup for at least eight months and have output files this way successfully until now. Anyone have any ideas?

I have a solution!
What I did was cut and past the clips into a new sequence in FCP and then resent it to Compressor. That seems to have solved everything. Clearly the error was being generated in FCP rather than Compressor.
Thanks to NLEdit for trying to help, it's appreciated!

  • Compressor stalls when running additional Compressor instances

I have been running Compressor 4.1.1 for months on my Mac Pro utilizing the maximum number of "additional Compressor instances" that my computer supports (3).  A couple of days ago I had to do a complete re-install of my Mavericks OS on my boot drive (saving a back up just in case).  Since the clean install of Mavericks and re-installation of Compressor I have been unable to run multiple Compressor instances.  Compressor just stalls with the status showing "Waiting".  Trashing the contents of the ~Library/Application Support/Compressor folder clears the waiting processes.  But unless I disable additional instances the same thing happens as before.
In console I get this message:

What can I do to get additional instances to work again?
    Thanks.

    Russ,
Thank you for your suggestion.  At this point I don't know if I had the Apple Qmaster folder or not.  You see, after working all day yesterday trying to resolve this issue I finally gave up and once more erased my boot drive and did another clean install of Mavericks.  This time, after the install, the first thing I did was repair permissions.  Much to my surprise there was a very long list of permission problems that had to be repaired. I then re-downloaded Compressor.  The first thing I did was set the number of Compressor instances to the maximum of three.  I held my breath and tried a short encode.  Much to my relief everything proceded normally.  So I don't have the answer to what caused this problem.  But a re-install and repair of permissions was all I did to get it resolved.  Now I have the fun part– re-installing all my apps, importing mailboxes, and setting up all my preferences and such.  I will not use the Migration Assistant because that may have induced the problems in my previous clean install?  I may have migrated something that caused problems. So at about 1:00 AM this morning I shut everything down until I could go at it again this morning.

  • Compressor stalls FCP

I have FCP 6 and the latest Compressor. I'm working with an HD video file.
I had no problem exporting my current file through compressor in the past. But, now, out of the blue, when I export the file to compressor, the color wheel instantly appears in FCP and FCP stalls. I can still work within compressor, but when I submit the job, it fails to start.
At that point, I can only cancel the job and try to quit compressor, but it hangs and won't close. So I have to force quit.
And then, as soon as compressor is closed, the color wheel on FCP disappears and everything is fine, like it never happened...
    Any ideas?

*I'm working with an HD video file.*
This is an import factor. HD? There HDV, DVCProHD, XDCAM, uncompressed, etc.
There is 1080i/60 and 720p. Tell us what you are working in.
*when I export the file to compressor, the color wheel instantly appears*
With what Compressor settings for what purpose?
Don't shoot the messenger, but this information is necessary.

Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss) Then try the update again.

  • Compressor taking TOO MUCH TIME

I've just begun making a podcast, and the first video is of an event that is 2 hours long. I edited in Final Cut, rendered it, and then exported it to Compressor. But when I submit the job, the "time remaining" begins to go up, I had to cancel the compression because the time had gone up to 80 hours!!!!!
    What can I do????
The compression settings are: H.264 for iPod video and iPhone 320x240 (QVGA)
The FCP version I have is 6.0.1

    My source sequence settings are:
    Frame size: 720 x 480 NTSC DV (3:2)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC - CCIR 601 / DV (720 x 480)
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
Quicktime video settings: Apple ProRes 422
    Should I change anything?
I did the 60 second test and the compressor did the same thing... I left it for twenty minutes and it kept increasing the estimation time. I waited for 20 minutes and then canceled because it had barely advanced, the estimation time was at one hour.
    Am I doing something wrong?

  • Repair permissions seems to stall

I was just about to post this "question/problem" and saw an earlier posting.
I get the "less than 1 minute" message, but the blue progress bar doesn't seem to move, so I quit after a couple minutes.
How long does it wind up taking?
Should I just try again and this time give it 10 minutes before I give up.
    Thanks
    Gary

I’ve had it take as long as 25 minutes, so be patient. Get a cup of coffee or go for a walk. It usually stalls for a long time at the one-minute remaining mark, but then later will go to a more realistic time, like 16 minutes remaining, which is more accurate.
I saw another post where someone let Repair Permissions run for four days and it still reported it had 18 hours to go. That person was having a lot of problems before running the repair and what was reported that eventually fixed it was an Erase and Install (reinstall).
You probably won’t need to, but if you do need an Erase and Install, you will need to have a full (preferably bootable) backup.

  • Job Won't Start Processing

I'm running Compressor 3.0.5 and Snow Leopard. Everything's been running smoothly until yesterday. When I submit a job, either from Final Cut or by adding a file directly to Compressor, the job's message quickly changes to "Unknown time remaining" but it never starts crunching.
Batch Monitor shows a job that's stuck on Canceling. I can't remove it from the list. I'm assuming this is what's clogging up the works. How can I get around this?

Ah, I forgot about that thing! That cleared it from the list, but so far hasn't solved the problem of not actually starting to process my files.
Right now, I dragged a PhotoJPEG movie file into the window like I've done a million times before. I then hit Submit (already have my custom default setting) and wait.
Usually, it will think for a second or two, then quickly the progress bar would jump to 33%. This type of job should only take a minute and a half. It's now over 10 min. without a single blip on the progress bar.
    Very frustrating.

  • Need to Erase/Reinstall After Failed Migration

Hi! I attempted to do a transfer via Migration Assistant yesterday from my 2009 MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Pro and it failed (it stalled for 10 hours on "Less Than a Minute Remaining..."
I powered off the new machine and quit MA on the old one. I ran Disk Repair and Repair Permissions on the old machine and everything checks out fine.
I need to restart the migration ... what steps do I need to take to erase/reinstall? The new machine shows that ALL of the date was transferred, but I shouldn't trust that - right?
From Disk Utility do I choose Erase>Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? And then wait for it to erase and then go where to reformat to GUID before doing the migration? And when I start the migration, will I need to first re-install the system software? One more question ... my old machine has 10.5.8 running, is that a problem??
I REALLY appreciate any help you can offer!! I'm crunched for time and need to get this done!

I'm not sure who your communication is directed to but I think it's me. Please reply to the person you're intending your communication to go to. If you want to start all over here are some instructions:
    1. First Backup!!!! This is critical just in case and disconnect any peripherals!
    2. Insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and click the icon that says *Install Mac OS X.app*
    3. Click Utilities then click Restart enter the Name and Password
    4. After it restarts (this takes awhile because it's loading from the DVD) Choose the language then click Utilities menu then click *Disk Utility* then choose your HD (it will be called something like MacBook Pro) then click the *Erase tab* and make sure the format is set to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click Erase
    5. After it has reformatted the HD you can exit Disk Utility and continue with the installation, this will take about 30 minutes and it will walk you through the installation so it will think it's brand new and you can then use Setup Assistant to migrate all of your stuff from the old Mac.
    6. After the migration has been completed you will now want to install the data from the Applications Install DVD that came with the computer. Click Install Bundled Software.mpkg and follow the on-screen instructions. After that has fully installed you should be up and running with you new machine.

  • Stuck at 33% sharing from FCPX

I am stuck at 33% shared video as DVD. Actually tried most of the options for sharing but still stuck at 33%. Now trying to send to compressor but it keeps saying 44 to 47 hours time remaining. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to repeat the entire video.  As mentioned in a previous thread, I had no problem with Final Cut Pro last year but with the update to FCPX, the sharing and exporting imps are just crazy. Any suggestions how I can solve this?

I had this issue yesterday, came to the forums and tried many things. Tried deleting render files, changing to "frames" on the HUD, duplicated the project, removed the background image etc  - none of these helped. Just installed the 10.0.9 update - seems to work now :-)

  • Compressor 4 stalling after "send to compressor" FCPX

I just installed compressor, checked for updates to make sure I had the latest version, and tried to use "send to compressor" in FCPX.  Compressor 4 stalls and nothing occurs.  Wheel of death occurs and I must forcequit to exit.  Have any suggestions for this issue?  I am trying to send a 2hour video (and a 5 min video).
What is the best way to resolve this issue? Computer shouldn't have any problems with processing this request.

Is it best to export file form FCPX and then import the exported file into Compressor?
IMO, yes. It's more reliable and – even with an additional step – fast. Not everyone likes this approach, but many who know more about what goes under the hood than I do also follow the two step workflow – whether using the new or legacy versions of FCP.
Hard to know why Compressor isn't happy with the 20 minute file. What format are your clips; what are your project settings; what encoding settings are you using in Compressor?

  • Compressor 3.5.3 stalls at end and Final Cut Pro crashes

Compressor 3.5.3 stalls at end and Final Cut Pro crashes I have tried Compressor repair, deleted qmaster files been at for a week now and it is doing my head in. Anyone out there who can help please.

Export your sequence File>Export QuickTime Movie. When you save it make sure Current Settings is selected and that Recompress Frames is not selected.
If that export fails, create a new project, copy the first project's sequence and paste into the Time line of your new project. Then export, following the steps in the first paragraph.
Once you have a self-contained QT movie, import that into Compressor. If you need to down res, turn on Frame Controls and set the resize filter to Best.
BTW, why do you need to down-res to SD?

  • Pro Res 422 Project Stalls Compressor & Matrox

Gurus, stuck on this one. FCP7.0.3 project with a series of clips edited into a 18 tracks from 90-seconds to 8/9-minutes. No big - just cleaned them up. The Inspector shows the clips to be "Apple Pro Res 422, 12800x720, 60fps, 141.86 MB/sec (lovely HD TV) and the Browser confirms (although the data rate does not show), and Pixel Aspect is Square. Dense, but good.
When sent to Compressor 3.5.3 to encode to Best Quality (2-pass) DVD, Compressor wants an probhibitively long amount of time, like two days. This on a MacPro eight-core. More specifically, a 90-second track would take Compressor better than an hour.
When sent to Compressor using the Matrox MX02 with MAX H.264 hardware accelerator the same thing occured. It wanted 18+ hours to encode on the Mac Pro 8-core.
It feels like there is a hidden process occuring -- some sort of other conversion that I just do not see. Adivce?

Michael amd Shane, using Michael's advice to Export as a self-contained movie, I took a 1:53 1280 x 720, 60fps track in the Project and it made a nice 1.85 GB clip, which I then brought onto Compressor. I applied the Best quality DVD 2-pass, and it made the m2V file in elapsed time of 1:35 on the whiz bang MacBook Pro 4 core. Have not tried H264 yet. But here's an unusual thing I've discovered -- most likely the cuase of this hang-up:
I went back to the FCP Project and transferred this same 1:53 track my usual way -- highlight the Sequence in the Browser, Control-Click, Send To Compressor -- and when it arrived in Compressor, the timing or the time code in the Preview screen hs a start time of 16:00:00:00 and an end time of 23:23:20:03 showing a duration of 07:23:20:04 on the same 1-minute-53-second clip. I have no idea why. Any guesses?

  • Do I need compressor installed on both computers to work a cluster?

I have the new mac mini running lion and a mac pro running snow leopard. Compressor 4 is only installed on the mac pro. when I check 'this computer plus' button before submitting a batch the whole thing stalls. Would it work if compressor was installed on the mini?
Also, how many times can I download and install compressor 4(or lion for that matter) from the app store?

yes you will also need Compressor.app V4 installed on each cluster node these days simply to administer thecluster through
Compressor.app |application menu Apple Qmaster| Share this computer [manage a cluster] etc
also the qmasterpref | qmaster cli commands are buried in the Compressor.app (and FCPX) frameworks I believe.

This entire process makes the resume from hibernation take about 2 minutes, while it should be no longer than ~10 seconds.
Can you see anything in those logs that could be causing it?
    Desclaimer:
Resume from hibernation with TuxOnIce does take ~10 seconds, but I cannot use it because with it my screen remains off even though system is well resumed.
So please do not recommend me alternative hibernation methods, because they all have one of those two results, and those that stall at least render the laptop usable after resume.

Really?  Do you really think that windows' ability to handle hibernate has anything whatsoever to do with Linux's ability to hibernate? That is a horrible bit or reasoning...
@cfr, yes, I usually use suspend, but it still drains some battery and is not an option to use for emergency suspend when your battery reaches 3%.
Also, suspend is much easier to wake by accident. Happened several times when my ThinkPad was in a backpack. Nearly fried it.
So I fail to understand why you don't just set the "emergency suspend" to something higher than 3%?  Wouldn't that be a whole hell of a lot easier than trying to make old unnecessary and unmaintained software work (which is really just a collection of hacks/workarounds).
I highly doubt that you "nearly fried" your computer.  Computers have temperature sensors, and trip points at which they will shut off.  There is one in the kernel itself that will start a normal shutdown procedure and there is one in the firmware that will just hard shutdown the system at a slightly higher level.  Both of these temperatures are levels that are set by the manufacturer of the hardware which is designed to avoid damage.  I am a bit confused as to how you managed to have your laptop wake in your backpack anyway.  If the lid is closed, the keys shouldn't be pressed, and if the keys are being pressed, you are putting unsafe amounts of strain on a screen.  So if that is the case you should probably find a different method of carrying your laptop.  But besides all that, you can also just fine tune what methods the computer will accept to wake the machine.
Powering off works fast, because I have a fast SSD. But that's not the problem. The problem is I have to save all my work before shutting down, and then manually restore it next time I boot.
I think there are software solutions for this as well.  In fact some of the big DEs already do this.  But there is also one small project with the goal of being a stand alone implementation of this. But really, I think if you just did the reasonable thing of setting your "emergency suspend" to something more sane, you wouldn't really have this problem.

  • Compressor no longer opens

I have Final Cut Studio 2 with Compressor 3.05.
After many months of perfect performance, recently, when exporting video from Final Cut to Compressor, nothing would happen after I pressed Submit. And if I open Compressor by itself, it stalls on the splash screen. Either way, the actual compressing power has been removed from Compressor somehow.
I've deleted Compressor, Qmaster, and all their associated files, and tried reinstalling these apps (plus updates), and even all of Final Cut Studio a couple times, but I still see the same issues. Any idea what can solve this?

I went and downloaded the latest sofware update for SN, because my mouse was locking up at the same time. I don't know if the problems are related. Anyway, I reloaded that November update and compressor opens, takes a file, lets me set a destination then allows me to submit without collapsing. When I go into the batch monitor it shows the job is there, but there is no activity and the job isn't processing.
If you went through all the steps for the last version of compressor and it didn't work, I think we are in for a real headache. I sat on the phone with Apple for two hours and didnt' get it resolved properly and have to use my MBP to process files. I also also getting scared this will happen on my MPB soon. I hope Apple follows this and gets a jump start on this bug. I have large projects slated for next year and I can't have the downtime I had with compressor in FCP Studio 2.
Can we email apple straight up and let them know of the problem or is it still support for iphone and ipod only?
