Compressor takes 15 hours for 2 hour video

Is this normal? Compressor is taking a really long time to compress video from FCP so I ca burn it onto DVD. This is 2 hours of simple DV video. There are no effects and the sound is extremely simple. There aren't even transistion in the video. I'm really new to this whole process. I just want to put the video onto a DVD, whats the quickest way to do this? Thanks!

You don't necessarily need 2-pass VBR Best quality for your encode (the 90 min DVD Best setting). The VBR settings are related to motion, and assign more data to areas of high motion (quick pans, action sequences, etc) and less data to areas of low motion (e.g. talking heads) but if your content is pretty consistent, you will get acceptable results at 1-pass VBR or CBR. Take small segments of your movie and try exporting with 1-pass and CBR and see whether the quality is acceptable.

Why does it take ages for my video files to be listed in the menu?

I have my apple tv 2nd generation connected to my airport extreme first generation via ethernet. I have my mac mini connected to the same network (though not connected to the airport extreme) with video files and tv shows in itunes. My itunes media is stored on a hard drive connected to my mac mini and home sharing is on.
It takes ages for my apple tv 2 to list the videos/tv shows in its menu. For example I have my films listed by genre. If I select a genre, it takes sometimes as long as 5+ minutes to list the videos within that genre.
Can anybody help with this frustration?

You probably have a problem with your LAN. If you are using wifi:
You can download and install iStumbler to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.

Compressor seems to take forever for my video.

I just started using an older Sony FX1 HDV camcorder. I want the 1080i video which is the component out, so i got a Blackmagic Intensity Pro Card. I'm capturing the component through this card. Is this what is taking my compressor soooooo long to work through? Uncompressed video?

Hard to say since you didn't mention what the duration of your program is and which settings in Compressor you used.
But you mentioned capturing. Is that what you're doing? Or are you actually using Compressor?

You need to select an output: MP4, MOV or the Apple TV settings. If you have Compressor 3.5 there are templates for Apple TV that work quite well. And I think, and I'm sure someone is ready to correct me, that either MP4 or MKV will play on the PS3

I am planning a long plane trip next year and I keep toying with buying a video ipod but the 3 hour (for watching videos) or so battery life is making my decision towards the no side. I am wondering if there is an external battery that is worth the money that will give me a long life so I can keep myself entertained for many hours.

Sure there are many plug in external power packs you can buy. Some are rechargeable units themselves while others simply use common (AA, AAA, 9V) batteries and give a univeral 5V USB output. Here is one such example...

Sure why not. The camera app will record videos and there are car chargers for the iPad that you can purchase. You will need some sort of stand to place the iPad into, but those are available as well. You might need to adapt the out of the box car stands to face in the direction that you want, but there are lots of them out there.
You should set the iPad to not go to sleep in Settings>General>Auto Lock>Never until you are done recording.

How do I create a complete video program for 6 hours of event video?

I have used Premiere Elements 13 to create 10 Projects of individual presentations recorded in HD during a 6 hour conference. The chair of the conference wants a complete video record that could be given to participants. The totality is too large for a DVD but might fit on a large flash drive to be given to the participants. Each Project is a record of an individual presentation. I know how to create the individual videos of each presentation with Premiere Elements 13 and I can create DVDs. Multiple DVDs seem like a logistical problem and not everyone has Blu-Ray. I would like to have a menu like a DVD to take the viewer to any one presentation or to start at the beginning. The final product does not need to be HD but should be as good as possible.
This seems beyond what Photoshop Elements can do. Is it? How do I create the finished product?

In Premiere Elements 13, the burn to products are the only end products with menus. The webDVD (flash file with menus)
has been discontinued in Premiere Elements 13.
How much of your HD source Timeline content can you fit on a DVD double layer single sided disc destined for DVD-VIDEO Widescreen on that DVD disc?
As a rough guess-estimate, when you have the disc in the burner tray, look at the burn dialog Quality area's Space Required and Bitrate just before you would hit Burn button in the burn dialog ("Fit Content to Available Space" with check mark next to it.)
The DVD double layer single sided disc is labelled 8.5 GB/240 minutes. In reality that 8.5 GB is 7.95 GB.

Adobe media encoder cs4 extremely slow (5 hours for 8 minute video)

I know you have seen slowencoder issues before, but I have tried everything I can to fix this and need help.
Lets start with basic info:
8 minute vieo takes over 5 hours to generate final video.
Observations: 3 processes are running most of the time, with over 2GB memory left over and available, I/O is low, CPU is at 90 to 100 percent for hours during encode.
PProHeadless.exe 48-50%
Adobe Media Encoder.exe 30-40%
ImporterProcessServer.exe can be from 30-50% CPU but not constant.
I live in San Jose, and am willng to take this laptop to your Office to debug it personally. (FYI)
CS4: 4.2.1 with all updates applied
ALL Encoder OUTPUT is set to a 128GB Solid State Drive drive so there are very low delays on I/O: SAMSUNG MMCRE28G8MXP-0VB.
This setting is in the general disk setting, media cache files, etc. All I/O is to this drive, except the project file which for some reason gets copied to temp on c drive... (no I/O there however)
OS Boot drive is the seagate hybrid drive and is also very fast: ST95005620AS

I use time Warping ON SOME OF THE CLIPS, and I TOOK 2 of the 60P videos and set the time to 10% and 20% IN THIS PROJECT FOR SLOW MOTION OF THE ENTIRE CLIP.
Another note that you need to look at separately:
I have seen issues trying to time warp and 60P video interpreted at 30P and time warped. It displays fine, but WILL NOT RENDER. I deleted these and re-did them at 10 and 15% time respectively to get the video rendered.

Yes you are right, I did not expect improvements for Premiere pro, but I installed because I use this configuration on other systems for 1 year... and here are the results...
ALL of the data on this sytem is backed up on my 8TB server. I can loose anything here and get it back. I see the OS as just another replaceable disk.
I used the system motherboard hardware Raid 0 for C: AND... I put 3 of the 1TB drives on the motherboard hardware raid as a data disk. Data disk is ALL scratch disk, for the encoded files and cache. Source files are on the other software striped drive. Of course I loaded a fresh install and moved to Windows 7 64bit...
Overall observations:
     As you predicted encode times did not improve much, It was 15 minutes vs 17 minutes at 2.66 clock. I am unimpressed with the Intel Motherboard Raid 0. I saw the SSD was blazingly fast, but I think moving these to a RAID controll they will go faster. Each SSD drive in 200+MB/S rated.
What I do see is dramatic improvements in load times of the OS and ANY program you run. The pagefile was moved back to this raid 0 drive after benchmarks. RUNNING ANY application (adobe, microsoft, ALL are blazingly fast to load).
Example: Premiere pro CS5 from click on launch to CS5 prompting for a project name was 5.5 seconds... I would not take this out of the system for any money saved. It is amazing. Almost as good as the nvidia quadro FX 4000 Display card and the CS5.
My NEXT investment IS the RAID controller, and 6 of the Hitachi deskstar 3TB 6GPS Sata III drives to replace all my current drives. Next month or so for that.
I want components that I can keep in the system when I do replace the motherboard and CPU. I will tune this system as I have funds, and ask for help when this system no longer is viable and replace the motherboard. I will ask for the fastest motherboard and CPU combo that you can buy, and keep my 730X(treme) case and add a water cooler. As drives add 1TB a year in size, they seem to meet myneeds and I replace the old every 2 years to get the space I need.
As always your comments are spot on and I appreciate your reviews.

I have no idea what may have caused your MacBook to stop working, but from your description it kind of sounds like it may have started before you ran Software Update and installed the new Apps. Just the general slow feeling and bugginess is what tips me off. You said that you weren't sure if you had closed all open windows, that doesn't matter if the computer restarts itself. It automatically closes all other open applications when restarting.
As to your data being retrievable, if when you take it in they do a fresh install of the OS, then no, it will not be unless you want to pay several thousand dollars to a software retrieval company.
I am glad to hear that you have taken into the Apple Store to get it fixed, and that you have all of your purchased music backed up to your iPod. You should be able to just transfer it all back to iTunes once you get your computer back should it be necessary.
As a side note, the proper place for this topic would probably in the MacBook forums, not iTunes since there is no evidence that iTunes started the issue.

When I am downloading songs it takes hours for it to finish?

I am having trouble downloading things from the itunes store. My internet connection is fine, I can surf the web top speed, do what I need to do, but the things that I buy from itunes store it takes hours for it to finish. Even when I try to download my podcasts it doesn't goes though, it gives me an error 404 or the network timed out. It happened after I have updated my itunes. Any suggestions?

What codec is your source material?
What are your sequence settings?
What kind of files are making up your layers? Video (What codec?) Photos (RGB or CMYK?) Motion Graphics?

Compressor taking about an hour per minute of video

Hi, I've been trying for a week now to get my 1 hour 42 minute HD video to compress for a DVD. I've tried a bunch of different settings and I finally got one that works good. But it's taking about 1 hour for every minute of video that it's compressing and I'm trying to have DVDs made by this Saturday. All of the other setting that I've tried so far have taken days at a time, then failed with only a few hours left. Does anybody know of any faster way of doing this without losing quality?
I'm using a macbook pro, the video is AVCHD 1920 X 1080 using AIC. I'm using MPEG-2 with 2 pass VBR, all frame controls on "Better" in Compressor. I like the quality (I tried a 7 minute clip of it already) and I want these DVDs to be at least that quality, but it doesn't seem like it should be taking so long.

you're on a MBP si there really isn't a lot you can do but reduce quality. You have only two cores. I'm hesitant to reccomend that you setup a cluster in qmaster. You'd be using all your cores. I'd want you to have at least one gig of free memory for each core, and I don't know how many you have. On the bigger multicore machines we'd assign 50-75% of the cores to the cluster assuming plenty of ram. Your drives aren't helping but at this point it's processing power rather than drive speed. You could try disomnia from digitalrebellion.com to keep them awake, and set your energy settings panel to prevent drives from sleeping

That all depends on your internet service. 6 Mbps or better is recommended for HD rental content. 2.5 Mbps for SD. You can check your actual internet speed at speedtest.net.
If you'd rather download SD content to avoid waits, you can change the type of content available by default in settings.

Do not let the battery drop to 0%. That is very damaging for a lithium based battery, as in the iPad. Charge at any time, for any amount.

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running on? Did you have the opportunity to update 12 to 12.1 Update yet using an opened project's Help Menu/Update? If not, please do so when you get the opportunity.
