Compressor time

When I set custom frame controls it makes the transcoding time increase
substantially. I am transcoding a very short clip-21 sec. and not setting
the frame controls to best for everything. Do frame controls indeed increase the transcoding time so significantly.
Thanks

Hey Gadzuks,
wow, you really have your work cut out for you!
my recommendations are either:
A) reject that file, since it really is VERY, VERY difficult to truly de-interlace a file that was shot 29.97 and edited or effects added in 23.98. if that is NOT an option, then:
B) in the mac world, download the the free software called JES Deinterlace and give it a go on that. first create a *.mov that is deinterlaced and THEN import that newly created file into compressor OR in the PC world, download VirtualDUB AND AVIsynth. these 2 tools are very powerful, frame-servers that give you real-time previews of your files. in addition, it has one of the BEST (in my opinion) adaptive deinterlacers out there (and it is free).
like i said, you really have your work cut out for you. not only do you have to deinterlace the 29.97 but you also have to make sure you dont break cadence (from when you outputted from 23.98) to properly deinterlace THAT material.
good luck and i hope that helps some.

  • Loaded FCS2 and Compressor time seems a lot longer

Loaded a 73 minute HDV (1440X1080) program and sent to Compressor for a MPEG-2 fastest time DVD. 6 hours later it was still compressing. Is this normal? Normally a 73 minute SD (720X480) would only take a little more than an hour. Any suggestions?

HDV compression for standard DVD takes time. The high quality settings for me run about 8 times the length of the program, with only a few simple edits/transitions, etc., so the times you're running into seem pretty normal.
An 8 core Mac Pro might speed things up a bit. . .

  • Compressor times getting longer and longer...what is going on?

I burn two game dvds per week about the same times (1hr-1hr 10min. I have been using compressor preset of 90 min best(mpeg-2) and then upping the bit rate to get 3.4 to 3.8 gb per dvd. The times to process are getting ridiculous. Normally it would take 2-3 hrs to process but in the last week the last 3 compressor processing times were 5hrs, 7hrs, and then today 22hrs. As far as I know I haven't changed anything. What could bee going on and where should I check first? Im' using FCS 2 Thanks!

In case you haven't already, try some of the things outlined in the Troubleshooting Basics for Compressor.
For your scenario, I would try to the Clear QMaster Cache first. If that doesn't seem to solve anything, try Repair File Permissions, then Delete Preferences.
Or are those roads you've travelled already?

  • Compressor times incorrect

I have encoded a 115 minute show at the 120 minute fast and best encodes. The video file alone is too large for a DVD 5. In the description of the setting it says it will allow up to 120 minutes. Regardless of the audio the .m2v is 4.85GB. How is it possible that compressor cannot determine that the file is too large and why put those descriptions if inaccurate rather than just a bit rate calculator.

I'm fairly new to Compressor and still in the mode of seeing what it can do, but I didn't take Apple's presets as "guarantees" or absolutes. I'd have to agree that the description text is perhaps misleading - but only if you insist that that description must be an absolute since Apple put it there.
At the default quality settings, it's quite easy to see that the actual amount of video you could fit on a DVD5 is 94 minutes - quite a bit less than your 115. Unless, of course you're willing to allow a bit more compression. Duplicate the preset you want to change. Click on it in the presets window (the copy will appear at the bottom of the list). In the Inspector window give the "new" preset a meaningful name (just remove the word "copy" and add something else there). Tab to the description field and replace the description with your own.
Click the Encoder button (second from the left) and then the Quality tab. If you want to ensure that your MPEG2 retains as much quality whenever possible leave the maximum data rate slider where it is (or you could increase it to the max for DVD5 of 8Mbits/s). This won't change the amount of video you can fit on a disc though. You'll see a change in the amount of video you can fit on the disc when you lower the average data rate slider. Reduce the average data rate until the display at the bottom of the window shows that you could fit your entire content on the disc. Save the preset. If you are including audio, duplicate the audio preset that went with the original MPEG preset, create a new group and add your adjusted MPEG2 preset and the audio preset to it (and give it a nifty name of course). Drag and drop your group folder on your source entry in the batch window and submit it. You should get (after some time) an MPEG2 that will fit on a DVD5 disc.

  • Fix for when Compressor suddenly gets slow?

    Hi all,
Apologies if I'm the millionth person to ask this, or something similar here! I have searched all over before asking, including the archives here.
Until today my compressor rendered out fine.. i'm converting 1080p ProRes to 720p MP4 for use on the web. For a project running a few mins long, Compressor took roughly 45 mins to produce the file.
Now, it's saying it will take 40 hours. I haven't changed -anything- except I made a small re-cut in my video (but rendered it before exporting in FCP) and I've bumped up the audio bitrate a little bit.
this happened once before, but I attributed it to the fact I was trying to render out from a USB 2 scratch disk (which I knew wasn't recommended).
anyway, there are lots of threads in this forum in which people mentioned slow compressor times, what fixes are there?
    Best,
    Chris

Nick, thank you, good idea to keep things clean. apps in the final cut studio often seem to benefit from trashing prefs, too.

  • Compressor Problem

Hi, my compressor times are out of control. Its taken 13 hours to compress 90 minutes of footage coming directly from final cut pro 7. Im using compressor 3.5 on reasonably new MacBook Pro which is hooked up to external usb 2 harddrive. Is this time normal? I hope not. in the past it was taken 6 to 7 hours for 90 minutes of footage using the best quality DVD 90 settings. Maybe i need to change some settings? Can someone please let me know what im doing wrong? Its makes my workflow so much longer. Thanks.

Background encoding from FCP does tend to be pretty slow on my end as well. I would recommend exporting a Quicktime movie file from FCP, then send that to Compressor and see if that speeds things up. If you keep the Quicktime file as a self-contained, then you have a safe master should something happen to your FCP project.
The USB 2 connection could also be a factor in the slow encode time as well. But it's still wise to keep your sources and destinations separate, unless you're using a RAID.

  • Compressor 4.0.3 won't use cluster

OK, I give up. I am running FPX and Compressor on a relatively new iMac. I have set up clusters multiple times (regular and Quick), made sure volumes are mounted, successfully (I think) created a cluster showing processors from my MacBook Pro on the same network and network segment.  Compressor and QMaster seem to be happy with what I have done.  I have run Compressor Repair on both machines, reset background processing on both machines... BUT no matter what I do, when I click the Submit button, the only option is "This Computer" and the batch only uses the local computer.  I can not get my cluster to appear as an option in the pull-down menu next to "Cluster:" after hitting Submit.
Any more ideas on how to actually USE a cluster so I can take advantage of using the other computer to share the load?

I've used Compressor for a few years and my experience is as follows:
Here are my Mac Pro specs:
    - Early 2009 (2 x 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Zeon)
    - 32GB OWC RAM
    - Mountain Lion running on 120GB OWC SSD (installed in one of the optical bays)
    - Also, I've used same/similar setting on Lion and Snow Leopard.
    - 2 identical internal RAID-0 (2x3TB HDDs & 2x3TB HDDs). 1 RAID for FCP X Events and the other for FCP X Projects.
A little about my video backgrond. My wife and I started our video company in 2005. We have filmed/edited hundreds of weddings, a few big non-wedding events, and maybe 50-60 commercials. Every job was delivered on DVD and/or BluRay. Sometimes the final project is delivered in ProRes, but still, the client wants a DVD copy as well. That means lots and lots of compressor time.
Compressor is absolutly awesome if qmaster is up and running. Keyword "if". Usually (80% of the time) qmaster would run good (using all 16 cores, 8 real cores and 8 virtual cores) at maximum capacity. Today, I can't even get it started 80% of the time. I have bought Compressor Repair tool, I've read hundreds of posts on the web, literally spent days reading blogs, deleting, reinstalling, trashing preferences even downgraded ot Lion to get Compressor/Qmaster working. I cannot pinpoint what exactly worked, but qmaster would start properly once in a while. But then in a week or 2 it would fail and won't start again. Then I would go through the same cycle of trashing preferences, deleting, redownloading and reinstalling compressor. Very much annoying and reminds me of my Windows days.
The only real fix for Compressor I found is Adobe Encoder. The only sort-of drawback to Adobe Encoder is the price for NVIDIA Quadro 4000, which is $700. Encoder does faster and better scaling with CUDA engine. We've used it for the last 4-5 months and it hasn't crashed a single time. Just as fast and just as good quality encoding. We're now in process of moving all of our projects from FCP X to Premiere.

  • Qualtiy Degradation

I am compressing two rather large QT files, total run time about 3 hours and 30 minutes. As this is going from FCP to DVD Studio Pro and I am working on my powerbook, the compressor times are quite long, roughly the realtime for the videos. It would be quicker if I used the fast encoding or went to mpeg 1. As this is a meeting, not a broadcast piece is the degradation of quality noticable as this is a new client and though speed is important, quality is more so.

Sorry but don't get your point. What is your specific question?

  • Keeping chapters if re-encoding

I usually send all my video from FCP through Compressor before authoring in DVDSP. - no problems.
BUT - I wanted to use chapters in my latest project. I found (or at least I think I heard..) that you can only put in chapters-and keep them if you export a QUICKTIME file instead of Compressor.
    OK - fine.
But as I go to burn the DVD, it is taking SOOOOOOOOO long. At the rate its going, it seems like it is going to take 12 hours to burn a 1 1/2 hour DVD. The total Compressor time and Burn time would never come close to that.
Am I doing something wrong? I would just cancel - and re output through compressor. But then I will lose all my chapters.
(oh... exiting!! It just went from 36% to 37% after a half hour!!!) Ugh.
    Thanks for the help.

    Imac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

You would normally take the exported QuickTime file to Compressor, to make the AC3 and M2V to use in DVDSP. Something else you might do instead is to place the markers in DVDSP, it's fairly quick and easy to do it there.

  • Compressor Stuck @ 99% for the 4th time...

I successfully got project 1 of 2 out yesterday, workflow went like this:
(From FCP) "Send to: Compressor" Select destination/compression settings. Submit batch (3 different timelines to be encoded." In this instance, Compressor successfully completed all but one of the three videos to be compressed, the first time. I had to resubmit the smallest clip of the three, a second time. Compressor than completed the job.
    Next project (2 of 2)
Submitted two timelines to be encoded, via FCP>File>Send to>Compressor. First video encoded, second video got to 98% after 12 hours. Cancel encode, resubmit. Additional attempt....got to 99% after 3 hours. For third attempt, I first exported the clip as a "self-contained" quicktime file. Took that file into compressor, same result: 99% @ 3 hours.
It seems that my only experiences with Compressor have been this way. Crazy long encode times, and can't depend on it to finish any job I leave for it overnight.
For my 4th attempt, I will dump Compressor's history and restart.
Just finished my 4th attempt. Same failure...
Also, here is a sample of the log:
    <mrk tms="314175845.019" tmt="12/15/2010 23:04:05.019" pid="393" what="service-request" req-id="8F0A772D-93FB-4BA7-BFEA-3D3B9A6439DC:1" msg="Error: unrecognized request."></mrk>
    Here are the stats:
Macbook Pro 2.2 intel core 2 Duo,
    4GB RAM,
    OSX 10.5.8
    500GB Drive w/140GB available.
Graid 2TB Drive w/1.35TB available, all media held here.
    FCP 6.0.6
    Compressor 3.0.5

The format of my source clips is an ugly blend, as I used 3 different cameras to capture the footage. It was a wedding, shot with 2 panasonic cameras outputting DVCPRO HD 720p60 960x720, and one canon 7D doing close-ups and pickup shots, outputting apple prores 422 at 1080x1920. However, I transcoded all of the prores clips ahead of time, into the same codec and dimensions as the others.
Sequence Settings are DVCPRO HD 720p60, with a 23.98 editing timebase
I'm compressing into MPEG-2 for DVD playback.
I am trying compressor repair right now.
    I will un-instal/reinstall if this doesn't work.
I was curious how the multiple codecs might alter the output, but had successfully completed 3 other timelines with similar/identical content (relative to the codecs).

  • Is there a way to compress more than one project at a time in Compressor?

I've been using Compressor for a while and love it, but was wondering if there's a way to use it to compress file from multiple projects that are open in Final Cut? Right now, when I select the "export to Compressor" in Final Cut, Final Cut becomes essentially "unavailable" for use and I get a window that's called "Compressor Processing" that's counting off the frames in the file as Compressor encodes it. If I have other projects open in Final Cut, I can't access or use them until processing in Compressor is done.
Anyone know if there's a way to put a project file into Compressor and then another one from a different file?
    Thanks.

Unfortunately, you understood me correctly. I was trying to see if there was a way to batch process multiple project files all in one shot with Batch Monitor. So basically the answer is "no" and I'd have to export the project files individually into separate QT files, and then drop each of those into Compressor? That really stinks. Just another time-wasting step that could be avoided with some basic software re-programming.
What's the point of having Compressor be able to interface directly with Final Cut if it can't batch multiple projects in the same batch?

  • Compressor reloads entire MKV file every time I do anything!

I have a 4gb MKV movie that I am trying to convert using compressor. When I add it I have to wait for it to load the entire file... like 20 minutes. And every time I change a setting it has to reload the entire file before it lets me do anything else. So just setting up a file to convert is like an hour long ordeal! Any way around this?

Apparently, Perian can read those files. Do you have it installed?

I have no idea if this will help you at all, but it has to be worth trying.

  • Mencoder H.264 20 times faster than Compressor 2

I tested mencoder with compressor running with 5 G5s. the H.264 implementation of mencoder was four times faster than the 5 dual core quads clustered with compressor two and queermaster . my single computer alone with just a dual 2 ghz processor encoded a movie 20 times faster than compressor with Queerrmaster on this same machine.
compressor costs more than mencoder(free in DVision). to get compressor you have to get an expensive Pro app.
    What's wrong with this picture?

Well, I have heard this lament before with the G5s, and all I can say is that I guess Apple is slowly starting to drop support for the PowerPC generation (it was inevitable). I assume you've upgraded to 3.0.1?
As for Motion 3 (and someone correct me here if I am wrong), I believe it's slower because of the full 3D integration. Whether or not you have a lot of 3D aspects, I think it still calculates for it, causing your response and render time to decrease.

  • TS4163 Every time I try to export my movie into a Windows Format from compressor it shrinks the movie to 27 seconds.WHY? HELP

Every time I try to export my movie into a Windows Format from compressor it shrinks the movie to 27 seconds.WHY? HELP

Probably because you have the free version of Flip4MAc from Telestream that limits exported files to 30 seconds or so. There ae several paid versions  – depending on your requirements
    Good luck.

  • I am trying to update Mac software. but each time I download Compressor, I get a message that the update cannot be saved because it may have been corrupted. What should I do?

When I download software updates, I continually get the message "The update “Compressor 1.2.1” can’t be saved. The update could not be expanded and verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that Software Update runs."  What do I need to do? This seems to be blocking other software updates.

By twice, I mean is there at least two copies of the same Time Machine data?  Backing up several times a day with Time Machine does not yield two distinct separate restorable sources.  Only one is made.
