Compressor wont compress

everything was going fine until yesterday...
when i export files from FCP to compressor, i can input the settings, submit etc.
but nothing happens, usually i get the swirly balls of death. It makes FCP "not respond" until i quit compressor.
ive rebooted, i looked for preferences to trash or anything but could find nothing. i am working on time sensitive projects and feel like i could be in big trouble...any help would be greatly appreciated...

Have you tried resetting background processing?
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/19589/Reset%20Background%20Processing.png
Have you installed any updates since yesterday?
What formats are your sources and what are you compressing to?
Are you submitting your batch to a cluster or just locally?

  • Compressor wont cancel export

My compressor wont cancel an export that jumed from 4 hrs to 148 hrs.  I went to the /var/spool/qmaster files, but that file is empty.  Any other idea?  I mean I can quit compressor but when I open it back up the file begins to export again which is not letting me export other files.

  • Compressor 3 wont compress/load anination codec

    Hello,
Something weird is happening on my system. Trying to compress SD footage on an animation
codec to m2v but getting the wheel of death spining both via a droplet and manually firing
up compressor 3 itself. There is no problem getting m2v files from the uncompressed 10 bit codec.
    Both is 6.2mbps 2-pass.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thank you.

I wish I had an answer for you and I hope someone chimes in. I have been dealing with this problem since installing back in april. I don't understand it myself, makes no sense! Just dragging certain animation codec files into compressor's batch window makes my computer stall for a good 15 minutes. Tried many files (all different sizes - hd, sd, web frame sizes, short, long clips) over the months, on many computers. Sometimes it will only color wheel for 1 minute (very rare), sometimes 15. I really don't get it at all.
And this has nothing to do with the output settings, it all bogs down once the source animation file is entered into the batch (droplet or main app).
I really wish I had some workaround for you, but all I've been able to come up with is taking lunch breaks when starting my batches. Very frustrating (and a bit fattening
    Best of luck!

  • Compressor wont let me compress anything

I normally can compress anything I want all the time but ever since I installed Leopard compressor comes up with this message.
    "CANNOT SUBMIT BATCH
"Unable to connect to background process"
Can anyone help? Is this fixable?

I started a thread on this a while ago and received one answer, to take everything off teh computer re-install the OS and the do a complete installation of FCS2 (which of course includes Compressor). Idid not do this as I thought it was a little drastic, bt I still do not have Compressor or Motion working on my MacBook Pro. It works fine on the desktop, but there is noone at Apple themselves that can cure this problem. FCS2 is full of bugs (not the applications they are great), but in teh way they work together with this qmaster thing.........
I gave up in the end, installed a demo version of Adobe Premier Pro with all its bits, hey presto a great system, now at least I can offer clients the best of both worlds.
Por show on Apple though that they cant fix this seemingly serious bug, and make no admissions that they even think it is a bug.......

  • Compressor wont cancel

    Hi there
How can I force compressor to cancel  compression ?
I have clicked on cancel but it is not cancelling
When I force quitting and resend new compression jobs those that I wanted to cancel before still appear as active even though "cancelling" is showing
    Thanks a lot in advance
The files are sent from FCP to compressor

    Hi Michael.
Resetting the Qmaster share prefs was kind of a Hail Mary idea that I borrowed from someone else.
My Compressor/Qmaster experience over three versions has actually been outstanding compared to other pro apps – very stable – and I typically can't reproduce many of the problems that some users report on these boards. Of course everyone has a somewhat different systems configuration, different plug-ins etc which probably account for 95% of the reasons why some "bugs" exist for some and not for others.
But just a few times I have had jobs that refused to cancel, regardless of what buttons I "pushed". Even rebooting the machine didn't seem to phase Qmaster…it resumed doing whatever it was doing after I relaunched. I frankly cannot now remember how those were resolved…a random click perhaps.
I still hope the OP will post what it was that worked for him.

  • Compressor 2 compression issues

I just bought the studio. Everything works well, except compressor 2. When it comes to encoding, it seems to have a problem with transitions, particularly if I use slow motion and several filters. The transitions always looks digitized. I have used a number of the presets and even created custom presets.
I re-log and captured the footage on another computer still using FC 4.5, DVD Studio 3, and Compressor 1.2. That always seems to work, but these steps just add to a workflow that is already at the breaking point. I want to continue using FC5 and all of the other programs it comes with, but will have to, for the first time, walk away from an Apple product less than enthusiastic, particularly if my projects hinge on quality compressions for DVD burning.
Oh, yeah. I am using Dual 2gig G5 and shoot normally in SD MiniDV. Sometimes 16:9 aspect ration, but usually 4:3.

    Dear Stephan,
I had the same exact problem while using FCP 4.5, DVD studio 3. The problem only exists during dissolves, especially between two photos. I talked to several Mac specialists (fcp certified, and dvd studio pro certified) who suggested putting in a compression marker for every dissolves, and instead of using Quicktime Compressor, use COMPRESSOR, and then in the drop down window 60 HIGH QUALITY compression, set your targets and GOOD LUCK. I tried it, retried it, and it seems to be working. I don't notice as much lost pixels between dissolves. It adds more work to put in so many markers. So far it's working. There's a bug in FCP I think and I hope Apple will work it out soon. In the meantime, good luck and thank you for airing your problem b/c I thought I was the only one.
    Best,
    k chen

  • Why does my audio quality drop big time when I use the compressor to compress my final cut studio project?

    Hi,
When I'm working on a project, my audio sounds great but once I put my project though the compressor it looses it's volume big time when I play the DVD on a DVD player or computer. Where does the problem lie? How do I maintain the smae quailty of audio on the finished DVD?
    thanks in advance,
    Iki

You'll need to duplicate the Dolby Digital preset then alter the duplicate so that the DialNorm setting is -31dbfs and the Compression is set to NONE. Use the new, custom preset to create an ac3 file with the same output levels you had in your FCP Sequence.

  • Compressor not  compressing time line

Let's see if someone can help , since the last update to 6.03 from 6,02 compressor will not compress anything submitted from final cut pro. When submitting final cut created the tab with the long number but as soon compressor is fully loaded the tab in final cut disappeared and when hit submit in compressor compressor just sits and nothing happens. I have tried to export as quick time first and put that in compressor and that works and sometimes does not work
    any idea

thanks for getting back but unfortunatley that does not work either. Again I bring the self contained file in and do all the steps to compress and compressor just sits there nothing happens.

  • Compressor 3: Compressing to M2V for a DVD creates a shaky look to my entire video.

This is a Compressor 3 issue I'm trying to compress a M2V for a DVD but it keeps creating a shaky look to my entire video. I have done this multiple times, but what is new to this FCP project is text zooming in, Canon 7D footage, and light rays layered on top of my video and text. I have looked up this issue on creative cow with no luck. I've tried single pass and double pass, still leaves me with shaky footage. I need this project to be done for a client and I can't explain why it isn't working.

Do this in two passes.  First resize your video from HD to SD.  Then import your SD into compressor.  All DVD footage is 720x480 for NTSC and 720x576 for PAL.  You want to create anamorphic SD video to handle the widescreen.  One of the easiest ways to debug your DVDs is to rip them back before burning them to disk.  In DVD Studio Pro use the format option instead of burn.  This will create a VIDEO_TS folder on your hard drive which you can then read using software.  Rip the video back from the DVD with DVDxDV or another professional DVD ripper that can output video in Quicktime ProRes.  Import your video into Final Cut Pro, and play it back.  When you get the encoding right, go ahead and burn the DVD in DVD SP.

  • Compressor wont process mpeg video properly

my compressor will process the audio in dolby fine but when i go to simulate my burn in dvd studio pro-it will only play audio and no video whatsoever.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you using Compressor to create both a ac3 and a m2v file? These files must have the same exact name with the different extension IDs.
If you have both a ac3 and a m2v file that when brought into DVD SP and placed together on the same track still results in a black screen, you'll need to tell us information about the QuickTime file you used to create the m2v. Tell us the compression codec, image size and the frame rate.

  • Compressor keeps compressing the same  Proxy file and FCS doesn't post it.

So I imported a 167 GB HD movie clip into FCS yesterday. It copied everything in alright and started generating my proxy. When I came in this morning, I noticed the proxy wasn't there yet and the lights on the front of my XServe were running at full. I went and took a look at Compressors Batch monitor and noticed that it had successfully created the proxy 10 times already and had started the an 11th. But for what ever reason when I go to FCS there is no proxy associated with it.
I've done this with other clips and everything seems fine. Any ideas?

Are the other clips that you have successfully compressed smaller file sizes? Is there anything "odd" about this large 167GB file? Any bad video in there that could maybe choke the encoder?
The largest file we compress is about 120GB ProRes HQ 1080p, about 1.5 hours duration. Seems to do ok so far unless an editor let the digitize run excessively long and capture garbage video at the end of the reel which will make the encoding choke. Also we use the Episode Pro plug-in for Compressor to generate our h264 proxies.

  • I can't email apple on this, but maybe you can help, compressor wont start

This is a long letter I composed to send to apple about my compressor problems. I am having issues here in this paper, file:///Users/nelsonmay/Desktop/Compressor:%20Troubleshooting%20basics.webarchiv e but I have files missing even after 3 installs. Compressor works fine under another user name and I was told to migrate everything over to that new account, but the tech on apple phone support didnt' want to tell me how. I still have about 40 days of phone support on this software FCP6, but didn't get much on the phone. If you have the time to read though this and can help me with either getting compressor to install on my current user account or help me migrate over to my new one, I can go on and start working with this G5 again. If anyone can forward this onto apple, I would appreciate it.
Here is my initial problem and why I called tech support.
compressor would start, and I had the toolbar, but I couldn’t start a batch or open a file. When I tried to close compressor it said files were in the queue.
I am writing with a real problem with my compressor software. I called tech support 4/7/09 and didn’t get a lot of help. I was essentially told to create another account on my mac to see if compressor was on the other account. I was also told to migrate over to that other account. I tried to ask for more support, but the tech just kept saying I need this paper to follow. file:///Users/nelsonmay/Desktop/Compressor:%20Troubleshooting%20basics.webarchiv e
He also said that I could just reinstall compressor and everything would be OK. I logged to the new account I created on while on the phone and got compressor to start. I thought I was good, and since I didn’t feel I was getting support ( I asked to be walked through the process) I hope compressor would run. Later I tried to run a file on compressor – the new account I created, and go an error. I thought the next step was to go though the paper and reinstall compressor.
First I made sure the permissions were correct. Then I removed the user preferences, but I did not find this file com.apple.compressor.Compressor.plist. I decided to proceed thinking I may be able to get a clean install. The following files were missing and still are.
    these files are missing
    /Library/Application Support/Apple Qmaster (the folder)
/Library/Frameworks/AECore.framework - I have the frameworks folder but it is empty
/Library/Frameworks/Compressor.framework - I have the frameworks folder but it is empty
/Library/Frameworks/MediaServerAPI.framework - I have the frameworks folder but it is empty
/Library/Frameworks/Qmaster.framework- I have the frameworks folder but it is empty
I have the frameworks folder but it is empty
/Library/Logs/Qmaster (the folder) – no qmaster
    /Library/PreferencePanes/Apple Qmaster.prefPane I apple q master
    /Library/Receipts/Compressor.pkg – no receipts folder
    /Library/Receipts/ProMediaIO.pkg – no receipts folder
    /Library/Receipts/Qmaster.pkg – no receipts folder
    /Library/Receipts/Qmaster_Frameworks.pkg – no receipts folder
Again I went on with the remove and also removed motion like the paper said. When I tried to reinstall compressor from the FCP disc, it wanted the soundtrack discs and the live type discs. I though this was a bit much for having to install just compressor and motion.
OK, so after an hour of installing all the required discs, I did the software update and compressor would start, and I had the toolbar, but I couldn’t start a batch or open a file. When I tried to close compressor it said files were in the queue. Now when I logged out and logged on to the new account the tech had me create, compressor worked fine this time…under a different user account.
So this is what I need from you guys. I have been scouring the apple help and support pages asking for someone to help me migrate all my data and preferences from my user account to the one the tech had me create. I can’t find a thing on it and no one is answering my questions. I feel that isn’t possible.
Now I can go on, but this isn’t a very good option. I can save files from Motion, FCP etc, log out and log onto my new user account to use compressor. I would rather not do that. I like to export to compressor and make multiple files for different .
    OK,
    1. I need to fix compressor under my user account that I have had for 4 years on this G5
    2. I need to be able to migrate to the new account I created and be able to have all my permissions as well as access to all data and other computers on my network. I also need to be able to log into this account on start up.

Usually they are good about support when you are under warranty. I have some time left on this software. I was just really surprised to get pushed to a white paper so fast and told, "to fix it myself". I have to give the guy credit, he did help me make another user account, but he just told me to migrate my data, and didn't tell me how when I said that I wasnt' sure how to do it.
FCP, is the problem on my system, not OSX. OSX didn't cause the issues in the first place. I also tried the compressor repair on numerous occasions and it didn't work. i am missing files on the install.....after three installs, I would think they would be there. That machine runs fine. Runs AE CS3, DVD Studio and HD on FCP without a hitch. Compressor is messing things up!

  • Migration to new mac and now compressor wont work

after a migration - new 6 core - my final cut studio (2) - doesn't all work. final cut works, but compressor tells me to restart or verify that my instillation is correct. DVD studio doesn't work either....
    help!!!
    thanks
    MR C

David is spot on. Follow his advice.
You need to understand that if you were running a G5 - a PowerPC chip computer - and migrate to an Intel chipped computer, the binary code to run the program on the new computer will not be present. Your G5's FCS installation doesn't have any intel code on it. FCS requires intel specific code on intel machines.
Also, you will need FCP v5.1 or higher to run on the intel machine. v5.0 or lower is not supported.
Heck, even migrating pro apps between machines on the same processor can be problematic due to the specificity of the chips and how FCS stashes system files. Sometimes they are not copied over or the frameworks are the wrong one for the processor or version of OSX.
Best practice is to always do a fresh installation from the disks (or disk images) then use software updater to bring it up to the current update.
