Compuserve Must Be Shut Down

While attempting to replace the flash player, I was advised
that Firefox and Compuserve must be shut down. Firefox, no problem,
but I don't have Compuserve on my machine. But a comment in another
thread gave me the clue -- the flash installer saw CS.EXE running,
and assumed it was Compuserve. In fact, it is CalendarScope, from
Duality Software. Killing that task allowed the install to proceed.
(The kill was done via task manager Processses tab; in retrospect,
I might have been able to simply stop the CalendarScope task by
closing the application.)
RECOMMENDATION: Shutdown Required messsge should cite both
the program name to be shut down and the assumed associated
applicaiton.

THANK YOU! CalendarScope was the mysterious Compuserve. To shut it down you have to EXIT, not CLOSE.

  • Firefox does not close/exit and must be shut down using task manager

When I "x" out of Firefox, or File menu "exit" or right click to "close," the Firefox window closes but whenever I attempt to restart Firefox, it says that it is already running (hence was never shut down) and I have to use Task Manager to "end process" before re-starting Firefox again. This dilemma only started after upgrading about 6 months ago (can't remember the version). I recently upgraded again but the problem still exists.

Did not address my issue. Firefox isn't freezing while it's up and running, it just doesn't completely shut down... therefore it's always running behind the scenes.

  • Firefox is hanging and must be shut down very frequently. Over the last hour, it happened 15 times at a wide variety of sites (gmail, wikipedia...)

Firefox is hanging up very frequently (15 times in the last hour). When it hangs, the page stops loading (spinning icon on tab stops) and all windows of Firefox are non-responsive.
It seems to be random sites from gmail to wikipedia to some forums. I have tried everything mentioned on the "Firefox Hangs" page. I am sure that more information will be required. Can Firefox do a memory dump when it hangs?

hi again, thanks for the further reply. i have had a look at the website you suggested and the repairs look okay to do. just one more development/question
the day after my original post, the problems seemed to have gone away. but yesterday it started again.
the new thing even with the adapter plugged in, the battery says 0% and shuts down soon as i unplug the adapter.
so looking at the computer info, it says:
    AC Charger (Watts): 0
    Connected: Yes
    Charging: No
    and above that:
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 4310
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 8
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 10932
    Cycle C*ount: 7*
*AC adapter cannot charge battery: Yes*
do you know why it wont charge the battery? is this linked to the same solutions you suggested?
thanks again for your help! I really appreciate it

  • WHy must I shut down firefox to get it to show changes in my web site? Safari has a refresh button that does this, but there isn'r any such thing in Firefx.

I have changed the fonts on some of my web pages. I would like to preview them before quiting, but Firefox doesn't refresh teh pages. Changing to another site and then reopening my site doesn't do it, even though the pages show correctly on another computer. The only way the page will display the new changes is to shut Firefox down and reopen it. This makes it arduous when working on changes to my site.
Is there a setting or preference that will allow this?

    * Clear the Cache
Press the '''<Alt>''' or '''<F10>''' key to bring up the tool bar.
Followed by; Windows; '''Tools > Options''' Linux; '''Edit > Preferences'''
    Mac; ''application name'' '''> Preferences'''
Then '''Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: Clear Now'''
    * Refresh the web page.
Hold down the '''<Control>''' key, and press '''<F5>'''.

  • When shutting down from Start button with Firefox running, screen freezes, will not complete shutdown and I must manually shut down. How to fix?

    win 7; 32 bit OS

Thanks for posting back. Glad Firefox continues to work.
Most programs try to do a bit of a cleanup routine as they closedown so it is usually best to close them down properly.
You will presumably have options to make the computer sleep, that needs power; or hibernate, that needs no power but may need spare RAM memory.

No doubt you have already discovered
    * You can opt for Firefox starting with home pages or starting with the last opened Windows. <br />Even if starting from home pages the History option usually allows the last open windows and tabs to be reopened

    * If something goes wrong Firefox tries to give you the ''embarrassing'' screen with options to select what opens from last time.

  • Macbook won't wake up from sleep.Must force shut down.

Here's the problem. When I leave it on (Macbook) overnight and I comeback in the morning the screen is black but the little white light is on(solid),but when I press the keys to turn the screen on I get no responce and I have to force shutdown it,it has happening frequently and I loosing to much information because of this, anybody out there with the same problem or similar?
    Please help.

I don't have the SAME problem, but a similar one. I normally sleep my (Santa Rosa) MacBook when I'm not using it. Mostly it wakes up okay. Once in a while it doesn't, but docking or undocking my Palm (not doing a sync, JUST (un)docking it) causes it to wake up, probably other USB devices (disks, thumb drives, etc.) would do similarly. Once in a longer while, that doesn't work, but opening the closed case wakes it up, or hitting Shift after opening it does. Once in a GREAT while (two or three times so far) none of the above help, and I have to do a force quit. Since it was sleeping, as far as I know I'm not losing anything, but I hate to EVER have to force shutdown.

  • IMac shut down and will not turn on no matter what I try...help!

I am hoping that someone can help me. I have a 20", 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac that was purchased late 2007. A few days ago, it shut down on it's own during normal computer use and it won't turn back on since.
I have searched through the boards and most people recommend resetting the SMC, SMU and pulling out/placing back in the memory. I have tried all of those as well as using a brand new power cord but none have worked. I have also seen recommendations to reset the PRAM but since the computer has to be on to do that, unfortunately, I can't try it.
Has anyone else had this issue? Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you in advance!

    Hi and welcome.....
I have also seen recommendations to reset the PRAM but since the computer has to be on to do that
Not sure where you found that information but that is not the case. The Mac must be shut down in order to reset the PRAM. Follow the instructions here...

  • QT32 Server needs to be shut down prior to updating

Does anyone in the world know how to fix the annoying qt32 server fiasco on my mac Snow Leopard current release? I need to supposibly shut down the qt32 server mac before I finish the updates for CS5 production Premiere which is not possible. I know 2 other editors that have the same issue and they gave up and went back to Final Cut.

I cannot address how things are done on the Mac-side of the street, but there are often programs and processes, that must be shut down for some program updates, as they will need to be rewritten too, and this cannot happen, if they are running, or resident.
On a PC, if one encounters such an issue, the offending program is usually being called at bootup, and one would use a utility, like the built-in MSCONFIG, to just not load that program, or process, until the update is done.
I can only guess that similar exists for the Mac, but could be horribly wrong.
Maybe Todd, Jeremy, or another valued Adobe employee, who also knows Mac's, can weigh in and help.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

Lost ability to simply shut down Safari. Have no Apple icon or red "X" at top of toolbar.
Must manually shut down when finished.
There must be a way to return to normal.
    Thanks for your help.

    Quit Safari.
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library".
Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist and drag that file to the Desktop.
    Launch Safari and test.
You don't mean the Apple icon on your toobar, not in Safari, or do you?

  • Forced shut down

Every single time my son logs out of his 'account' on my iMac, the screen darkens slowly from top to bottom - like a blind being pulled down - and then a message in several languages pops up saying that the computer must be shut down by holding the start button depressed, and then re-started. This only started a couple of weeks ago.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
    Cheers
    J

This is a 'kernel panic' - a complete System crash. They are normally caused by a dodgy peripheral or problematic RAM, so the first thing to try is to remove all peripherals except mouse and keyboard and see whether this helps.
Crashes like this can damage your disk Directory so you should run a disk repair - ideally every time this happens - before your disk gets messed up to the point where you can't start up.
And as a brody suggests, back up your data before something serious happens.

  • Failure to Shut Down

For the past couple of days when I manually shut down my G5 Dual 2 GHz the Dock, Finder windows and Icons go away as they should during shut down, but the Mac stays on and I am forced to use the Power button to finish the shut down.
Other than recent software updates I am at a loss as to what is happening here.

Is the failed shut down scenario like this?
    1. Press "Control Eject" (no quotes) to show the "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?" and then press the Shut Down button.
    2. All applications quit, including the Finder, as expected.
    3. Only a blue background is shown and also the mouse pointer, as expected. Yet the mouse pointer does not go away, which is not expected. The Mac remains like that for ever, with the mouse pointer functional (you can move it)
    4. Pressing "Control Eject" (no quotes) again shows the "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?" again. Clicking Restart or Shut Down buttons makes such window to go away (as expected), but the Mac remains as before (step 3). Repeating step generates the same results.
    5. You must force shut down, pressing the power button for a few seconds.
Both on PowerPC and Intel-based Macs.

  • IPhone 5s with ios 8.2 - can't use touch function; must double tap each function key; can't shut down phone without a hard reset; every function results in a voice description even in silent mode.

I have a iPhone 5s and just installed the 8.0.2 ios. How do I stop getting audible descriptions of each action I take in silent mode? The Touch ID has ceased to function. The screen icons have to be double struck. I cannot scroll down past the first page of any screen. I must force a shut-down to turn the phone off.  How do I fix all these problems?

    Hello Gubus 2,
It sounds as though (no pun intended) VoiceOver is enabled on your iPhone. Pressing the Home button quickly three times should turn this feature off. Further information can be found in the iPhone user guide at the link below.
