Computational Ability to Handle Super Big Excel Files

My son lives overseas and is in the business consultancy business. He will be visiting us in the USA next week and plans to buy an iphone (if there are any available). He is a committed PC user but is getting frustrated with the computational slowness of his laptop PC when handling really large Excel files. Large = 15 linked excel files each averaging about 400 megabytes. Remember, his business is based on running iterative analysis of spreadsheet variables so there is considerable processing going on.
Question: Would the fastest MacBook Pro dual Intel processor model be better at handling these large files than a fast PC laptop, i.e. would the MacBook Pro offer him processing advantages? Would he also be able to let the Excel program grind away in the background while using the Mac to do mail messages and other work concurrently? I'm thinking that if he gets an iPhone he should go ahead and get a Mac and have the best of all worlds. Your comments are appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill

Well, if he runs the Win version of MS Excel under Bootcamp/Win it will run at the same speed as on an identically specced PC notebook - no idea how many PC notebooks with 2.4 GHz Santa Rosa chips, 4GB RAM and an comparable graphics chip are available though - if they exist, the MBP should be competitive in price and will run almost any OS (using Bootcamp or Parallels).
The story changes looking at Office for Mac - the current version is not Universal and runs under emulation - it will be slower than the Windows version, the future MS Office for Mac will be Universal, but will not support VBA/scripting - this should make it unusable for your son (I am sure these multi-spreadsheet applications rely heavily on scripting).
In general OS X handles multi-tasking a bit better than Windows, so yes, having a demanding process running while working in other apps might be slightly better.
Cheers,
Uwe

  • Import of  big Excel files

    Hi,
Lookkin for help with import of big Excel file (40,000 records) into a 10g database.
Each time I'm trying to import big file SQL developer turns non responsive. I have to use Task maneger to end the program.
    Thanks

How long did you wait? Unresponsive usually is just busy.
Can you verify activity e.g. in the Enterprise Manager?

  • Excel file can't open via email after upgrading to OSX 10.9.2

After upgrading to OSX 10.9.2, my Excel files are not readable when sent by email. My version for Excel is 2008 for Mac V12.3.6.
I have no trouble opening Excel on my computer but cannot seem to send Excel files via email.

Thanks. Tried that and it works but I had found another alternative.
Didn't realise but my Excel file had the extension missing even though it was saved as xlsx. To solve the problem, I just clicked on 'Append the File Extension' when I 'Saved As' and it worked. Thanks for the alternative help anyway.

  • Excel file save error: Someone else is working in file right now. Please try again later.

When trying to save a modified Excel file, which has been opened from a network share, our users are receiving the following message:
Someone else is working in "\\domain.com\users\username\Document.xls" right now. Please try again later.
The clients that have been affected are Windows 7 clients, and the DFS share is being served from a Windows 2012 server. I have already confirmed that DFS replication has not been enabled, so it isn't trying to lock files for replication. I have also disabled
any real-time scanning that is occurring on the client to make sure that the AV software wasn't locking the files. I did notice when viewing the list of Open Files from the server's Computer Management console that when a users experiences this issue the file
appears to be opened 4 times. Three times it shows that it was opened in Read mode and the 4th instance shows an Open Mode of Write. Typically, a file which is working correctly should just show one instance with the Open Mode of Read+Write. None of these
open instances are temporary files preceded with a ~.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi,
Does the issue occur in other operation system? Which Office version are you using? Have you ever tried to test with word document, PPT file or txt file?
Based on your description, the issue may be caused by the same file open multiple time in computer management on SQL server. The user probably has User Access Control (UAC) enabled on the machine and it is not letting him overwrite the existing
copy of the file because she does not have it open in administrator mode. UAC will block overwriting (saving) the existing file without Administrative privileges and it will automatically open the save as dialog so you can save with a different name and
if you click save without changing the name at the point, it tries to save as a new file over the existing file and it can't because the file is open.
I recommend you check the user's permission (Which showed in Computer Management console) and end the Excel file instance in the task manager of the user's client.
Also, we may try the workaround: Save it to local drive(like drive c:) and then copy it to DFS.
    Thanks

  • How to handler 200MB - 600MB XML file

I came into a problem to handle very big XML files using DOM or SAX. Is there any method I can build XMLDocument for such big files?

You cannot use DOM to load such a large file unless you can free up 1 to 3 gigabytes of heap memory. You could write special-purpose programs that used SAX to parse it as long as you were careful not to accumulate data in memory. You may want to seriously consider storing the data in some other format.

  • Time Capsule Dual: Working with Excel files in Windows Computer

We just purchased the latest-gen Time Capsule to replace another earlier edition TC and we are having a strange problem. We have three iMacs and one PowerBook G4 connected wirelessly to the TC, along with two Windows XP machines which are wired in to the TC. The issue is that the two WinXP machines cannot view Excel files from the TC. When they try to open and work with an Excel file from the TC, they get a message that there is not enough memory to open, work with, or save any Excel files and it won't let them open the Excel file at all. If they copy the file from the TC to the local WinXP computer, they can open it and work on it just fine. At first I thought the issue would be with the new TC, but I plugged back the old TC and it has the exact same problem. The only commonality between the two is that I foolishly updated the firmware on both to 7.4.1. The old TC was working just fine until I installed 7.4.1, and then it started to have the same problem handling the Excel files.
By the way, none of the Macs have any problems accessing and working on the Excel files off the TC, this only happens to the WinXP machines. Also, it only happens on the Excel files; we have other types of files in the TC and all of them seem to open and work just fine. But Excel is our mainstay so we're looking for a solution, can anyone help?

Same happened to me a while back when i updated the firmware 7.4.1 . the macs were ok but the Windows PC's sharing the Time capsule would not save any excel files as errors like memory too low
etc started to appear. easy way to correct this was to got into airport Utility and downgrade back to 7.3.2 , from the menu , you can select what firmware rev you want to go back to select downgrade to 7.3.2 and everything will work ok after this, remember to deselect auto update and check for firmware in the Airport pref till Apple get this sorted out.

From the names I'd guess they are temporary files. If excel is running, quit and try again. If they still won't move or delete reboot. If they still won't move or delete...kill a chicken at midnight under an oak tree?

  • How to save Android contacts as Excel file on Mac computer?

I want to manage and edit my contacts on my cell phone, my friend suggested me save them as Excel format! So now i am trying this way, but i can't find the right method to do this! Do you know how to save Android contacts as Excel file on Mac computer?

If you want to save Android Phone contacts to Excel format, you can have a try the following method:
Step 1. Connect Your Android Phone to Computer
After downloading and installing the Coolmuster Android Assistant software on your computer, launch it and you will get the program interface prompts you to connect your phone to the computer. Just use a USB cable to connect your phone to the computer and the program will detect the connected phone automatically. If it is the first time to run this software, you may encounter the following picture and be required to enable USB debugging on your phone at first. If your device can be detected by the program, you can directly skip to the next step.
Step 2: Go to the Contacts windows
All your phone data are categorized on the top menu. To transfer Android phone's contacts, you can go to click the "Contacts" icon to enter the Contacts window. Navigate to the left panel and click on the "All Contacts" option, then, all the contacts in your phone will show in list on the right window. Mark the contacts you want to backup on your computer and click the button of "Backup".
Step 3. Start to export contacts to computer at once
Once you click on the "Backup" button, there will be a "Path" dialog appears, asking you to choose an output location where you want to save the exported contacts. Specify an output folder and then click the "Ok" button. Then, all your phone contacts will be exported to the output location immediately, with all the email address, company's name, home address, and more contacts info perfectly kept in the output CSV or XLS file.

  • Had an Excel file in the dock. When I restarted  computer a question mark appeared in the dock. I can't find the file. Where can I find what was in the dock on my Time Capsule

I had an Excel file icon in my Dock on the compter. When I restarted my computer a Question mark appeared where the file icon was located in the dock. I need to find that file. I can't locate it either on my computer or on the Time Capsule . Anyone have any thoughts where the actual file may be located?

    Sorry, you lost me.
If the file is on your computer, then you will find it if you open Excel, click the File menu, and click Open Recent.
If you deleted the file before Time Machine saved it, it is gone.
If the file was on your computer long enough for Time Machine to save it, it will be in your Time Machine backups.
Open up Time Machine, wait a few minutes for it to load, and click on All Files on the left side of the window.
Then scan to select a purple bar over on the right hand side of the window to select a recent date when you know that the document was on your Mac.
If the document was saved, then you will see it in there somewhere. Click on the file to highlight, then click Restore to bring it back to the present time.

Arlington Historical Society wants to give its visitors the ability to look at our IPhoto files on the Apple computer in our office, but NOT be able to modify them in any way.  How can we do this?

Thanks. We want visitors to browse through our historical photos in any of the ways iPhoto will allow them, including slide shows, but also searching for photos by key word and viewing them along with the comments we have entered on that photo.
I was beginning to think iPhoto had no capability to limit users to certain functions.
I wonder if the use of Apple's sharing files function would help. I have read that it is possible to share files with others, and to limit their use to viewing only, but I don't know how to do this.

  • Trying to attach Excel file to my email...but it is too big...how do I fix?

I am trying to attach two excel files to an email, and each time it goes as follows:
    1. push the attach file button
    2. chose my files
    3. push the attach files button
    4. the blue "progress" stripe begins to fill the address bar
    5. Then it stops about an eighth of the way toward the end, and doesnt go any further...
I tried letting it go for a while, and giving it time, but it doesnt work. The file size is 34.4 (which I know is huge), but there is only about 20 lines of the Excel being used, but the program is trying to attach 64,599 lines of unused space, and that is why it isnt attaching im sure, but i dont know how to fix it, or if it is even possible.
    Please help!
    g5   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

what email provider do you use?
i'd be surprised anyway if it will allow an attachment of that size. the limit is usuall between 1 and 5 MB, some going to 10 or 15 like gmail.
34MB? not unless you have an expensive or corporate email provider.
    you can:
1: do like daddypaycheck said and reduce the file size by deleting unnecessary rows or collumns,
2: download OpenOffice.org, or NeoOffice, see if you like that and save it in the native format, usuall smaller file (beware compatibility)
3: use dropstuff or the like to break the file apart into multiple smaller compressed chunks, and send them in multiple emails (the size of the chunks each should match the attachment size limit for your email provider, see their website)
4:this is my favorite - put the file in your Sites folder, in your user's Home folder. open system prefs-> sharing. check the box to enable personal web sharing. go to www.whatismyip.org and copy the string of numbers that appear (that's your external ip). now you can host the file from your computer, and only email people a link to it! the link should be like this:
    http://yourip/~your_short_username/name_of_exceldocument.xls
for example, here is my resume in .pdf, hosted from my computer (let me know if it works for you!)
    http://67.40.250.86/~Willeyeam/images/WBLResume.pdf
Bam! I'd go with number 4, and test the url in your browser to make sure it works. once you get the page, you can "save as" and download the file. that way people can receive an email with only text, including the url (link) to the hosted file on your computer. then they can "save as" and download the file.
another, more sophisticated way to do this is to write a small .html page that has a link to that file (in your sites folder). name the .html file "index.html" and replace the file by that name which is by default placed in your Sites folder. that will then be your home page at:
    http://yourip/~your_shortusername/
    Rock on!

  • Excel file too big

I created an Excel file that I saved on my iPad Air 2 (using iOS 8.3). I am getting the error message "Excel can't open this workbook because its too large." The file is 141.35MB. I've tried to save it to "Move to Cloud" or "Share" and email to myself. Both methods fail. Move to Cloud error message is "Download Failed." Share email error message states, "File is too large to email." The file option does not include a "Link to file" option. Is there any other way to get this file out of the iPad? Thank you
