COMPUTE CRASHES WHEN PROCESSING LARGE FILES
As far as basic operations, my G4 is running smoothly.
However, whenever I need it to process significant files, such as exporting a 30minute video from FCP as a Quicktime movie, or using Compressor to encode an .M2V file, the computer crashes. Basically, if any task is going to take longer than fifteen minutes to complete, I know my computer won't make it.
Thus far I've done a fresh install of the system software, reinstalled all applications, trashed prefs, run the pro application updtates, run disk utility, played with my work flow (internal vs. external drives), etc.
I wonder if perhaps my processor is failing, if I need more memory (though my 768MB exceeds application minimum requirements), or if perhaps these G4s just aren't adequately equipped to run the newer pro application versions.

I can't pull the dimm out due to the fact that I need a certain amount of memory installed to be able to run the software in the first place.
I've run the hardware test disc that came with my computer and it has not detected any problems.
I don't think heat is the issue as, according to the Temperature Monitor utility I downloaded, my computer remains consistant at around 58 degrees, even when performing difficult processes.
According to my activity Monitor, when I'm processing one of these larger files, I'm using as much as 130% of the cpu, but it also can remains as low as 10% for extended periods. Both seem odd.
Any thoughts?

Acrobat pdfmaker com addin for word 2010 crashes when processing large files
I am trying to use the pdfmaker com addin for word 2010 to create a PDF document. Whenever I try and create the document, the acrobat addin crashes word.
I attempted to perform this on both an x86 and x64 machine and it failed both times at around the approximately same point (during/immediately after determining the bookmarks).
The document is large (862 pages, 2425 bookmarks, 311 300dpi graphics, for a total file size of 49.2MiB)
I can generate the PDF by just printing, but the whole point of using the pdfmaker is so that we don't have to perform 2.5K of manual cross-links.

I copied the bitmap to IrfanView and then back (I think that was the step -- I am already forgetting) and the copied it back. The problem went away. My student may look a bit more at the file -- I asked so I could give a more definitive comment here.
The result I had suggests that it is a problem in WORD or the bitmap that WORD was using. Why WORD can deal with it and not Acrobat, I am not sure. However, when printing to the Adobe PDF printer there was not a problem, just with PDF Maker. -
Photoshop crash when opening larger files
Hi there,
A recently upgraded iMac now running Creative Cloud on Mountain Lion is having an issue where Photoshop crashes upon opening a large file, the log files show it as Photoshop is hanging when infact it has crashed. I have pasted one of the log files below.
As a note generally restarting the Mac after this has occured will allow the user to open the file.
Any assistance with this issue is much appreciated.

Illustrator CC crashes when opening large files
Illustrator CC crashes everytime a try to a open a file larger than 100MB, I have restarted my Mac, reinstalled Illustrator, it solves the problem for a day, but the next day is the same problem all over again. It doesn't show any message, it only displays the pizza rainbow and won't let me perform any action.
Turns out this only worked until I quit Illustrator and restarted it. I looked at the thread posted above about finding a crash report for the incident. However, Illustrator never actually crashes it freezes when I open this small handful of files and then I have to force quit the program. It clearly has something to do with the plugins because I have deleted the Plugin Cache file and it resolves the problem only temporarily. Is there a way to remove all of the plugins from Illustrator or find out which plugins have been installed that are compatible with the program?

Motion crashes when nudging large files
This has been happeining every since I started using Motion3. I work 99% of the time in DV. I bring in a logo or graphic to my project. Most of the logos I use I have to share with our graphics guy so they are usually pretty large (1500x1900 would be a random ex). So they are scaled way down which I'm guessing is the problem here.
If I try to move these images by nudging them or just clicking or dragging on the screen Motion crashes. In fact I can't move anything like text or shapes in the project that way or I crash. The only way I can move anything is by using the secondary arrow tool where you get the 3 arrows on the screen. It's just a pain to do things that way when I just want to move something a couple of pixels or so.
It's not the end of the world but I was wondering if this is happening to anyone else or if there was some sort of fix for this?
I know I can make my images smaller, which I do, but that is just an extra step and it eats up HD space which I am trying to avoid as we have no budget for the rest of the year for additional storage.Maxx - I think saving a few K off your hard drive (a FULL size SD frame, uncompressed, is only about a megabyte), is false economy - especially when the cost is lost time and frustration...
I'd create an appropriately sized copy of the logo and call it a day.

My computer crashes when I try to export from iMovie. What is the problem.
Why does my computer crash when I try to export it?
Does it happen with different iMovie projects or does it keep doing it with the same one? Might be a corrupt movie file.
Do you have iLife 11 on disc? If so you might try reinstalling iMovie and try it again, first without updating anything, and if that works then try updating and see if the problem comes back. It could also just be that iMovie is corrupt. -

My project have a requirement of processing large file (10 MB) all at once. In the project, the file adapter reads the file, then calls 5 other BPEL process to do 10 different validations before delivering to oracle database. I can't use debatch feature of adapter because of Header and detail record validation requirement. I did some performace tuing (eg: auditlevel to minimum, logging level to error, JVM size to 2GB etc..) as per performance tuing specified in Oracle BPEL user guide. We are using 4 CPU, 4GB RAM IBM AIX 5L server. I observed that the Receive activity in the begining of each process is taking lot of time, while other transient process are as per expected.
Following are statistics for receive activity per BPEL process:
500KB: 40 Sec
3MB: 1 Hour
Because we have 5 BPEL process, so lot of time is wasted in receive activity.
I did't try 10 MB so far, because of poor performance figure for 3 MB file.
Does any one have any idea how to improve performance of begining receive activity of BPEL process?

-SimanchalI believe the limit in SOA Suite is 7MB if you want to use the full payload and perform some kind of orchastration. Otherwise you need to do some kind of debatching, which you stated will not work.
SOA Suite is not really designed for your kind of use case as it needs to parocess this file in memory, when any transformation occurs it can increase this message between 3 - 10 times. If you are writing to a database why can you read the rows one by one?
If you are wanting to perform this kind of action have a look at ODI (Oracle Data Integrator). I Also believe that OSB (Aqua Logic) can handle files upto 200MB this this can be an option as well, but it may require debatching.

Processing large files on Mac OS X Lion
Hi All,
I need to process large files (few GB) from a measurement. The data files contain lists of measured events. I process them event by event and the result is relatively small and does not occupy much memory. The problem I am facing is that Lion "thinks" that I want to use the large data files later again and puts them into cache (inactive memory). The inactive memory is growing during the reading of the datafiles up to a point where the whole memory is full (8GB on MacBook Pro mid 2010) and it starts swapping a lot. That of course slows down the computer considerably including the process that reads the data.
If I run "purge" command in Terminal, the inactive memory is cleared and it starts to be more responsive again. The question is: is there any way how to prevent Lion to start pushing running programs from memory into the swap on cost of useless harddrive cache?
Thanks for suggestions.It's been a while but I recall using the "dd" command ("man dd" for info) to copy specific portions of data from one disk, device or file to another (in 512 byte increments). You might be able to use it in a script to fetch parts of your larger file as you need them, and dd can be used to throw data from and/or to standard input/output so it's easy to get data and store in temporary container like a file or even a variable.
Otherwise if you can afford it, and you might with 8 GB or RAM, you could try and disable swapping (paging to disk) alltogether and see if that helps...
To disable paging, run the following command (in one line) in Terminal and reboot:
sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist
To re-enable paging, run the following command (in one line) in Terminal:
sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist

Computer crashing when using Spot Healing Tool ~ PSE9
Why does my computer "Crash" when I use the "Spot Healing" tool. While using the "Guided" edit for "Perfect Portait" every other tool works just fine, but when I go to do the "Spot Healing" it crashes. Weather I am in the "Guided" edit or to use it on it's own. This is my 1st attempt using PSE 9 and this feature. HELP!!
Try clicking on the drop down icon under the word file - then choose reset all tools.

No, your iPhone and your iPad should not appear in the finder.
I'm not sure what you mean about downloading photos with iPhoto being double handling, but you can download direct to a folder with Image Capture. Image Capture can also be used to delete photos from the Camera Roll on the iPhone or iPad (preferrably after they are downloaded).
You can remove the photos you synced from your phone with iTunes by syncing again with an empty folder, That will delete all the photos that were previously synced that way, replacing them with the contents of the empty folder (that is, nothing). This will not effect photos takes with the camera on your iPhone.
