Computer boots, screen remains black

Hi there,
My iBook G4 14'' boots (hear the HD), but the screen stays black (I have a powerbook G4 with the same problem). Tried resetting the PRAM (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379) and PMU (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431), but no difference. At one stage I saw RED, BLUE, GREEN etc screen (I assume the screen is still ok)
Connected and external screen, also blank.
Made a firewire connection with my MacBooks and see the harddisk and it is working fine.
Checked for viruses (saw a message on that) nothing found.
What else can I do? Anny suggestions?
Victor

I have the same machine and have never heard of this happening to this specific model. Other machines known to have this problem were usually caused by a faulty logic board. I'm sorry I don't have any ideas what you can try other than the basics:
Attempt to boot the machine from the #1 installation disk
You've already reset the PRAM
You could try a disk repair using the Target disk mode, assuming the target machine is running the same OS.
Does there look like there's any damage or corrosion in the area of the hinges? That's probably not easy to determine without taking it apart. Do you remember anything about when it started? Had you upgraded the OS or added more RAM or changed a drive?

  • IMac G5 isight not booting, screen remains black & fans start

    Hello,
The iMac in question is a 2.1 G5 20" screen with iSight. It has worked perfectly with no problems up until recently, now when I go to switch on the chime sounds, the screen remains black and after about a minute the fans startup.
I have attempted to reset the SMU and PRAM to no avail.
I did manage (after several attempts) to boot into Target Mode with another mac connected by Firewire. The hard drive shows up and all the files seem to be there. I scanned the drive with TectTool Pro and repaired permissions, I also used Disk Warrior to rebuild the drive. Still the problem persists.
Tried to boot from CD but so far this has been unsuccessfull.
I have read of people having similar problems but have yet to find a working solution but I'm hoping there is one out there as the iMac was working wonderfully right up until this problem!
    Thanks in advance

It sounds as if your power supply is failingand/or your logic board.  I think it's time to take it in and have it looked at.  But before you do that, try running the Apple Hardware Test, on your install disc.

  • Laptop screen remains black (off) when I turn on the computer

    Hello,
Today I came home and turned on my laptop as usual except this time the screen remained black. I can hear the fan running and then the usual windows chime at start up, but nothing to view. The HP logo at the back still lights up though. Just the actual screen remains completely black like it is off. I tried connecting it to my tv via HDMI and to an external monitor but there's no signal. I also tried doing a hard reset which I read about here but that did nothing.  I feel as though it's just the monitor won't turn on but everything else might be fine.

    Hello DJJOC,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To start troubleshooting this issue where your iMac's screen will not illuminate, please reset your SMC by following the information outlined below.
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: For Intel-based Xserve computers that are not responding, you can shut down locally, or by using remote commands, or by pressing and holding the power button for five seconds.

  • Computer wakes from sleep but screen remains black even after restart

So, I installed SL yesterday and everything seemed fine. Last night, I closed my computer's monitor (putting it to sleep) for the night. This morning, when I opened it, the screen was black. I could not see anything, so I just restarted the computer.
On restart, the screen remained black.
After some experimentation, I realized that the computer was actually running, but I just couldn't see anything. So, I typed my password - screen was still black.
I then pressed the power button and enter - shutting down the computer properly.
After it shut down, I turned it on and the screen came on as normal...
    What's going on here?
I checked some other threads and there was some potential issue with the iphoto screensaver, but I am not sure if that is the case here or not.
Any thoughts on how to fix this or prevent it form happening in the future?

I just had a similar thing occur. After resetting the pram the screen came back on.
I had noticed some problems with the hot corners for sleep mode earlier so I have deactivated them now to see if this was the problem. The only other thing I can think of is the recent Java update. I installed it right before the problem occurred.

  • IMac g5 screen remains black when turning on

My iMac 2.0 gz ppc g5 froze up while net surfing. I turned off power strip and when I turned computer back on all I hear is the fan running, the power white light is on but the screen remains black. Am I in some weird sleep mode? Or worse? I' m running 10.5.8

    Try rebooting in Safe mode:
To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
       1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
       2. Press the power button.
       3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
       4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.
To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

  • MacBook Pro 2008 not turning on, no sign of power and screen remains black

    I have a MacBook Pro 2008.
It was working fine until when one morning i wanted to turn it on as usual only to find out that it can not power on.
When i press the power-on button, i can hear the hard disk spinning but no display, the screen remains black like not getting power.
No beep sound when tried to boot without RAM installed.
The battery and the Charger worked fine when tested with another computer.
The RAM works fine when tested with another Computer too.
What could be wrong with my computer, i hope it is not the board that is dead.
How can i overcome this problem?

    Op Charles,
You can try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for a battery that applies to your machine.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1365
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1367
You can check these as well
It sounds as thogh the the GPU may be dead, you can take it in to an Apple Genius (make an appointment) they will disgnose it for free and give you your options.
    Good Luck

    Try smc and pram reset.
See if you can boot in safe mode.

  • New ipod nano 6th generation used 3 times. Screen remains black despite a full reset. Something special to do ?

Hi, I just bought a new ipod nano and used it 3 times. Today it did not work and I first believed that the battery was too low. I connected the device to the mac. Sync worked well and charge indicator as well. Nevertheless, the screen remained black. I therefore tried to reset the device and after the resetting, the screen remains as black as before. Any solution ? thanks and regards

If it does not get enough juice from the USB port, it will not charge.
You should NOT connect it to a USB hub. Connect it directly to the computer. If you use a desktop computer, use one of the ports on the back, not one on the front, which tend to be lower power.
You say you are using a macbook, which tend to be better about power. Make sure you don't have any settings that turn off power to the usb ports when the computer goes to sleep. Check your power settings in the settings screen.

  • Screen remaining black at startup

When starting up my Satellite S55 I can hear the drive running, but sometimes screen remains black. Sometimes it will not shut down if I press the on/off switch or close the lid. Just keeps running with a black screen. I usually leave my laptop plugged in. This computer was purchased in Jan of 2014 and has not been used a lot. Why does this happen frequently?

I don't even know where my original installation disks are now
AppleCare will send a replacement set for a nominal fee.
    Or buy a retail disk ($29 U.S.)
I have the installation disk from my MBP mid-2010.
The gray discs are specific to the model and build period of the Mac they came with;  they won't work on another Mac.
Apple changed the firewire plug from the one machine to the other
You can get a small adapter, or a cable with different plugs at each end.  Just so you know what the adapter looks like:  http://www.amazon.com/CABLES-FIREWIRE-6-PIN-FEMALE-4-PIN/dp/B000ENY90A

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • TS3474 My nano will not power on when fully charged, screen remains black.

Bought early 2012, no idea what generation it is. When connected to the stereo, the screen illuminates and nano works with stereo controls. When I try to take the nano for a run, when holding the power button down the screen remains black and no amount of touching the screen will produce an image or any sound. Any ideas about troubleshooting the black screen when powering up un-connected?

    Hello gatormother,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information, take a look at:
iPod nano (7th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4433
Will not turn on or screen remains dark
Connect iPod to power for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has enough charge to allow iPod to turn on.
If iPod does not turn on after ten minutes, try resetting it while it is still connected to power. Reset the iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least six seconds or until you see the Apple logo appear.
If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
If the screen remains dark and will not turn on, then your iPod may need service.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

Try starting your iMac with the original DVD that came with the computer. Then run Apple Hardware Test. If you are not able to see the screen you will need to take your iMac in for repair.

The computer shut down on its own while we were gone and will not start up again.  When we press the power button we hear drive and fan noises but no chime and the screen remains black.  Any suggestions?

A pretty common thing for computers that have been shipped is a RAM chip becoming dislodged just enough to cause what you are describing. Try re-seating your RAM chips. Basically just pull them out and push them back in. Take a look at this article if you need some direction on this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423
