Computer boots with Apple logo then goes black

So my MacBook Pro boots up withe the Apple logo then goes black as if the it is set on the lowest dim setting, you can just barely make out the icons on the screen so it is booting into the log on screen. I tried brightness, I tried holding down shift, you get a flash of blue then goes black. I tried the startup disk it starts up and goes black, you can just make out the outline of the language selection on the startup disk.
Any suggestions.

1. Try doing a Parameter RAM reset - hold down apple/option/p/r keys at start up and wait for three chimes before releasing the keys.
2. Boot holding down Apple/S and don't let go until you see scrolling text.
When that stops and you see a root#: prompt enter
fsck -fy
Let it run through all the checks and repairs.
If it fails first time, at any time, or finds and fixes a fault - run the command again and keep doing so (some fixes can take several passes) until it says "Appears to be OK" then enter
reboot

    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

  • Help! Light gray magnified apple logo then goes black and dies.

    Hi,
Whenever I start up my macbook pro a lighter than usual gray screen pops up with a magnified apple logo and spinning wheel, it then proceeds to go to a black screen and stays there. I tried starting it up in single user mode and running fsck but that didn't do anything it failed to notice that there was a problem. I then tried running disk aide from my start up disk but it failed to find anything wrong with my computer. I replaced my hard drive with a new one and retried all of those things and still the gray screen would appear. I also ran disk utility and and verified and repaired disk permissions and nothing worked. In addition to that i tried resetting my ram. I have no clue how to fix this I've searched all over the web but can't find anything. I desperately need my computer for school.
    Thanks
    Dave

  • Boots to Apple logo, then grey screen for eternity

There's a glimmer of life, so I'm hoping that this computer can be salvaged.  This is a first generation Macbook Pro, so it's getting on in age.  However, I haven't heard any physical symptoms of failure (hard drive and fans sound like they're fine), so I'm hoping there's something I can do here.  What happens with various boot methods:
OS X, normal: I get the Apple logo, then it goes back to a plain grey screen.  I can leave the computer sit for hours, and it'll get warm like it's trying to do something yet never goes anywhere
Windows XP normal (boot camp): the images below tell the whole story there.  Can the lines or codes be used to diagnose the problem?  The ati2dvag error (plus the way the screen looks) makes me think video issues?
Windows XP safe mode: gets stuck loading one particular file.
OS X, safe: I CAN boot this way!  I can complete a "repair permissions" task; verifying disk comes up saying that everyething is okay.
Is there anything I can do while I'm in Safe Boot that will let me help try to diagnose this problem?  The first time it happened, I tried an SMC reset and was able to get back into to OS X normally.  But the problem has returned, and numerous attempts at an SMC reset have proved useless.  Thank you for your help!

Take the machine in for service. Nothing we can do.

  • My ipod classic turns on with apple logo then shuts off about 30 seconds later, when plugged in my windows and itunes will not recognize it.

earlier my itunes told me that my files were corrupted and I needed to restore, so I did.  In the middle of the restore I lost internet connection. Now my computer and Itunes will not recognize my Ipod and if it is not plugged in when I turn the Ipod on it only shows the apple logo then shuts off after 30 seconds.  If it is plugged in it will charge, but Itunes and Windows will not recognize it.  I have tried the menu + select shutoff multiple times with no change.  All it will say while it is charging is do not disconnect.

The clicking sound is your iPod Hardisk, trying to retract and find the boot sector unsuccesfully.
Hopefully, you can do the iPod Disk Diagnostic as in this great post by tt2., it wont fix your problem, but let you know, how dire is your Hardisk health.
So only as a last resort, one way, to get the stuck Hardisk head free, is to bang the iPod on a rubber mouse pad, when you reset it, but do it at your own risk, some very lucky guys got it working again for the next 14 months, like myself.

Why does my iPhone 4S, when I turn it on in the morning and it shows the Apple icon, turns complete black for over 30 seconds before I can swipe and log in? This started happening when I upgraded to iOS8

  • Mac screens loads on startup with apple sign, then goes to blank grey screen.

    Hi there,
Recently I've been having issues with my MacBook Pro and what happens is the computer would freeze randomly, so I'd restart it. And when I do it would show the apple icon and blink and go to a completely white screen and I can't to anything from there, it fixed itself a few times after a while but this is just frustrating. I've started up, held the alt key, put it in recovery, but it would do the exact same thing, go to apple screen blink to a white page. So if anyone could help that would be much appreciated.

Did the blue screen have black vertical lines? Or a completely blue screen? If so, then you have the bad GPU that quite a few of us had. It struck me suddenly - My external monitor 'blipped' and I tried restarting but could only get to the Apple logo and loading bar until the blue screen would appear. I couldn't boot from any bootable device I had. even when trying Internet Recovery (command, option and R whilst booting) offered no help. I was able to run the Apple Hardware Test but it showed horizontal line in the blue text.
My only solution - as well as hundreds of others - was to have the logic board replaced. It's been almost 2 months now, and the board is still working: some, however, have had their logic boards replaced 2-4 times. The only 'real' solution (and cheaper than replacing the logic board if you're not still under AppleCare as I was) has been to go to third-party computer shops and having a new GPU soldered in with 'leaded' soldered (rather than the unleaded that Apple uses).
If I were you, even if you're out of warranty, I would take the machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them run a free diagnostics check and give you an estimate for repair. I'll try to find the two threads concerning this problem and post them back here.
Here's the longest thread on the problem -> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0.

  • IPhone was charging, came to check on it, screen went black, turned it on, went to apple logo, then went black again!!!!!

So i bought an iPhone 3g 16gb off of craigslist for 120. I met the person at safeway, where she showed me that the phone worked perfectly. She showed me a game, then exited and called my cell phone. I was sold. Before i leave she starts the restore process on the phone. I get home and realize it's dead. I hook it right up to my computer and see that the little battery pops up on the screen of the iphone and its red, but continues to charge. I walk away for 10 minutes, come back, and its a black screen. I turn it on, the little apple logo pops up, im thinking HA we have lift off! But no, it shuts right back off. I've turned it on and reset the thing, i've hooked up my old ladys iphone to make sure everything is working properly, chords, usb ports, etc. Everything is working perfectly but my new iphone. It continues to turn on and show the logo, but shuts down 30-40 seconds later. What do i do??? Please help!!!!

Won't boot from any disk, already changed VRAM battery, no success. tried hardware disk once and ran a full scan, said error with Video, but now won't boot at all with any disk. Screen is choppy also(have pic). Thinking video graphics card? Not sure. Need help!

Hi bribiel, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It certainly sounds like the Video card from the little info we have, & that can certainly cause it to fail to bootup.

  • On my macbook pro 2011 the laptop boots past apple logo then the screen goes grey i think my graphics chip may be broken ?

The reason i think the graphics chip may be broken is because it worked right up until i disabled automatic graphics switching forcing it to use the dedicated graphics. I have tried resetting the PRam and the Power Management but nothing work and im well out of warrenty so this is likely to cost me a fortune at the apple store :S. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know the policy in the UK? (just a guess from the lingo) In the U.S. Apple has a flat repair rate.  had a 15' lodgic board replaced (twice, first was bad) Hard drive, led back lighting, and the keyboard for $330.00. It s my kids and I did not want to spend the $$$$ if I could avoid it. It also cme with a 90 day warranty. You might want to check if something like that is aavailable to you as well.  By the by the MBP was a 2008 and after the repairs ahs been flawless. Cretainly would not hurt to check, unless you have wagons of quid to toss around.

  • Need help with Apple Display 20" going black

    There support and mac comrades,
I was wondering if anyone has this following problem and had it fixed.
I am currently using double 20" Apple display on a Mac Pro, and suddenly one of the screen start to turn black and get back to normal after few seconds. A week later, the screen goes totally black and won't turn on anymore. However, after shutting down the computer and removing and re-pluging all cables, the screen comes back alive for couple hours. In the beginning I taught that it was the cables so I swap the cable of the two screens around but the same screen is having the same problem. Then I start to think that it is because of the graphic cards, so I tried on another Power G5 and same problem occur after couple hours.
Now I know, that this screen is defect and not caused by cables or graphic cards, is there any troubleshooting for this kind of problem?
    Please help!
    Sincerly,
    Jean

The display is brighter in the upper half then the lower one.
This indicates the lower back light is out, or a component called an inverter has failed, or a connector to these things has failed, and the short/short/long flashing power button is a signal telling you that.  There is no way to stop the flashing unless you fix the failed component.
I do not recommend attempting fixing this problem yourself.  Inverters can have relatively high voltage and could be dangerous if you don't know what you are doing.

  • PowerMac wont start up - Gets to Apple screen then goes black

Recently my 2.5Ghz DP PowerMac G5 has been behaving badly and now it appears to have died!
On startup it gets to the grey background with the Apple then nothing. No spinning gear and no Hard Drive activity from the Mac. After switching off and trying again not even the Apple screen comes up I just get a black screen. If I leave it a while then try again I get the Apple screen again but nothing else.
Tried starting up in 'Safe Mode' with shift pressed but using wireless keyboard and mouse wasn't sure if keyboard is recognised until Mac has fully booted. Tried switching to conventinal wired keyboard and mouse but still nothing - it's as if the keyboard isn't being found as the light on the Caps lock doesn't work while attemping a boot up. Does it matter where the keyboard is plugged in? Mac or monitor?
I can only think to take it in to Apple for repair but if anyone has any suggestions or ideas I would be very grateful!

    Hi-
The 2.5GHz machine is liquid cooled.
Open up the tower, and look for signs of leakage:

    Hi sarah gilkinson,
It is not clear whether the application has been installed on your computer or not. Can you please tell me how did you install the CS6 version? If you downloaded it from the Creative Cloud desktop application, it would have been installed on your computer by itself. To confirm if it has been installed, please check if you see Premiere Pro CS6 in your Applications folder.
If it is there, try to launch it and let me know if you see the splash screen. Also, please specify more details about your computer like RAM, Processor and Graphics. It would be of great help if you can attach a screenshot of the problem.
    Thanks!
