Computer crash, but files are probably safe...

My laptop recently had a motherboard failure, so needless to say, it's toast. Thankfully, 99% of my iTunes library was located on an external hard drive (though, in an unrelated note, my dead computer's hard drive is likely still okay). So, having the actual audio content safe isn't much of a concern. I do have a few questions though...
1. What's the best way to transfer the library to the new computer? (It will have a larger hard drive which I can fit my entire itunes library on, so I can use the external hard drive strictly for backup)
2. Will this transfer over any settings from my old computer? I'm talking about album art, mostly, since much of it wasn't automatically available, and I had to manually search for them online. I'd also like to get playlists, playcounts, etc. if possible, but if it can't happen, it's not the end of the world.

Here is an article from the apple support website that might help out.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329?viewlocale=en_US
This article states about using your ipod to transfer your library, but setting your library back up via an external drive is the same.
Hope this helps

  • 3 albums of purchased music show on purchased list, but files are only on iphone. How can I get them back onto my computer?

    I have at least 3 albums of music that appear in the "purchased" column on itunes, but the files have gone missing.  I have the files on my iphone, and can listen to them on it, but when I try to play them on my Mac I get the message : The song “XXXX” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" but when I try to find the songs in my itunes library the files are not there. I have had to de- and reauthorize my computer to get the apple tv (1) to play old content, and wonder if in doing that, I have somehow wiped out old purchased song files. Is there a way to transfer these songs back onto my desktop Mac? The "transfer purchases from iphone" function doesn't do it, seemingly because the songs were all puchased via the desktop.

    I have no need for it so cannot recommend directly but here are some programs

  • My computer crashed, my songs are gone, what can i do?

    My computer crashed and all of the songs that i got with the free bottlecaps off of pepsi's promotion are gone. Is there any way that i can get them back? It says i purchased them in the purchase history. (not actually purchased, but got). Is there any way at all to contact them, or where I can go to get them back?
      Windows XP

    You seem to have five choices:
    1 - Recover them from your backup files
    2 - Recover them from your iPod
    3 - Ask the iTMS for a second download of those 'free' songs (doubtful)
    4 - Pay for someone to recover the files from your crashed HD (expensive)
    5 - Purchase the iTMS songs
    I assume you do not have any backups. Do you have an iPod with the songs on them? If you do, post back and recovery instructions can be provided.
    If not, then a well constructed email plea to the iTMS explaining your situation and promising that you have learned the value of backups and will do so from now on, may get you a second chance at a download.
    Barring any of the first four above, it may be option '5'. Or '6': Just give up on the songs....

  • Session saved correctly, but files are missing from multitrack?

    Started a recording last night with multiple wav files. Audition crashed about 2 or 3 times during recordings, but became stable after a while (after continuing the session). When recoring was done, I saved the file and everything seemed to be working correctly and closed the program no files were missing at this point. When I came in this morning, Audition said that some wav files were missing. So i searched all over the computer and temp files but couldn't find a single trace of them. What happened to the files?
    More info:
    OS: Windows 7
    Version: Audition CS6
    Temp directory: Default
    Last working state: Last night
    Non-working state: Morning after (PC went into sleep mode over-night)
    Working wav files sequence: Track 1_065.wav , Track 1_066.wav , Track 1_067.wav , etc..
    Missing files: Track 1_006_1.wav , Track 1_012.wav , & Track 1_019.wav
    Thank You

    JoshCarp wrote:
    If Audition crashes the wav files and all are still there when it starts back up. However, if I save it and close, then the wav files are gone . . . nowhere to be found. It seems like Audition is saving them in a temporary folder. According to Audition the clip I need is located here: c:/Users/<username>/AppData/Roaming/Audition/6.0/<series of numbers and letters>
    However, that temp folder apparently is getting deleted as it doesn't exist. I am currently running a Data Recovery program to see if I can get the file back, but it seems like it's not going to find it.
    Thank you for explaining exactly what's happening. On the face of it, I suspect that the information Audition had about where the files were supposed to be is getting lost in the crash. It would appear that the recovery data can be relocated correctly, but because it now has no path to save to, it disappears when you try to save it - it would appear that this process gets the save/save as system out of sync completely.
    In this situation, almost certainly the best thing to do is to export the re-opened files as a separate action, and don't try using 'save' at all - because that really is going to lose them.
    Is it a bug? Not sure. But you really should attempt to find out why your system is crashing Audition, that's for sure...

  • HT1329 My old computer crashed but still have my IPOd with old music. How to transfer the music into new computer which has already music in it?

    My old computer crashed and I still have my music in an IPod. How to transfer the music/playlists into a new computer which has already music in it? (Not possible to copy ITunes of old computer in IPod)
    Thanks

    Lucky for you, I just found out how to get the music stored on your iPod by messing around with it. I'm not much of an Apple user (I only have a shuffle), so I'm not 100% sure it would work the same way as yours.. but it's worth a shot.
    if your iTunes didn't sync with your iPod yet,... that would be great..
    1, Make sure your iTunes does not automatically sync with your iPod (I don't know if this would help..)
    2, Click on your iPod and go to settings, check "Enabe Disk Use"
    Your iPod should now have a partition on My Computer called AFJCHAW's IPOD or whatever you named your iPod... If you go to that disk, you'll notice there's nothing in there.
    3, Click on Organize at the top right part of Windows Explorer(Windows 7, don't know how in XP..), go th the Folder and search options, view tab, and click on show hidden files, folders, and drives.
    If you go back to your disk, you should be able to find a folder
    4, It'll be pretty straightforward then. Go to iPod_Control/Music. You'll find folders there. Inside the folders are each of your music files (they're renamed but the Details would still be about the same).
    If you did get your music files back from this procedure, then, yay! it worked!!
    If you didn't,.... it should've worked..

  • New software install but files are old

    I just got a Palm Centro.  I've had a Palm 505 for years, had Palm desktop on my Vista computer for 1 1/2 years.  I installed the Palm Desktop software that came with my Centro on my Vista computer and my calendar, memos, addresses all look like they did 1 1/2 years ago.  I had synced immediately before installing the new software.  I had a back up of my folder with all these files, so I replaced my folder "Kris" with address, datebook, etc files.  I closed Palm Desktop and restarted it.  No luck, I still have all my old info - not up to date.  I have not synced my phone with the computer since this isn't right.  And, I'm afraid to sync my current palm and lose everything off there (since my "backup") didn't seem to work.  Help!  How do I get all my current info back?!
    Post relates to: Centro (Sprint)
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Did you install the version of Palm desktop that you got with the Centro, 6.2?
    There is a procedure to try to recover your files. Look in the following location for the Palm desktop username folder.
    C:\Users\(Windows username)\Documents\Palm OS Desktop\
    Look in the username folder for the category folders, address/contacts, datebook/calendar, etc. In those folders are the data files. Look for the files with names like address.mdb, address.mdb.bak. The .mdb file is the current data file, the .mdb.bak is the backup file. Try to rename the .mdb file to .mdb.old. Then rename the .mdb.bak file to .mdb (remove the.bak extension). Open Palm desktop and see if the data is there. IF you don't have the .bak file then you cannot rename to recover the data.
    When you upgrade to a new device using palm desktop 6.2, the files from the old version of Palm desktop in the username folder are not compatible. You cannot drag and drop the files into the new username folder.  The data files in Palm desktop 6.2 are in a Microsoft Access Datbase format, thus the .mdb extension.
    See if you can rename the .mdb files first to see if you can recover the data. If you can't using that method, you can "clean" uninstall the Palm desktop currently installed, install the version you were working with before the upgrade, copy the Username folder you backed-up from the old version and paste it in the old Palm desktop folder. Open Palm desktop and see if the data is there. Another option is to sync the old device to the old version of Palm desktop and then export the data.
    Once that is installed and you have the data intact in the old version of Palm desktop, export the data, install the new Palm desktop and import the data. With the export and import procedure you can use the data in any version of Palm desktop.
    If the rename doesn't work, do the "clean" uninstall using the directions below.
    You should first make a copy of your data to have just in case something
    happens. You can find your data files by going to Start --> Documents -->
    Palm OS Desktop. Highlight your Palm Desktop username and right click and
    copy. Then go to your PC desktop right click on a blank spot and select paste.
    Now you want to uninstall Palm Desktop and remove everything that has to do
    with Palm Desktop from your computer.
    Go to the following locations on the PC and delete the folders listed below.
    C:\Program Files\Palm or Palm One
    C:\Users\[Vista Login Name]\appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Palm or
    PalmOne
    C:\Users\[Vista Login Name]\appdata
    *Note you may need to view hidden folders to get to appdata. To do that go
    into your control panel and open folder options. Go to view tab and uncheck
    hide hidden files.
    Once this is done you will need to delete some registry keys from your PC Operating System.
    Word of warning, going here and deleting the wrong thing can cause your PC
    from starting up, crashing and deletion of programs and data. If you feel
    you are unsure of yourself, see if you have a friend that can help you or a
    PC technician that you can pay to help you. This procedure will show them everything they need to delete. To make sure we have a good copy of the current registry, we need to do a backup of the Registry.
    Go to start on the PC, in the search field type "regedit.exe" without quotes.
    Highlight COMPUTER, go to File --> Export. Should pop up with a Save As box.
    Current location is fine, should be in My Documents or save to a location you will remember. In the file name on the bottom type "backup[todaysdate]" i.e. backup07072008. Next, the hard part.
    The easiest way to make sure your working with the correct key, highlight the key i.e. palm quick install, and press delete on your keyboard. It will ask you, are you sure. Say yes. Do the same thing for all keys below.
    If you make a mistake, stop what you are doing. And call a PC technician.
    BUT do not turn off your computer.
    The reg keys are as follows (Note: some of theses reg keys will not be here
    but if they are delete them)
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Palm Quick Install
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\PalmOne File Transfer
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm, Inc.
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmDesktopAutorun
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\palmOne
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmSource
    * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\PalmSource or anything else that says palm
    Next reboot your computer.
    Then reinstall your palm desktop from the CD and do a hotsync. If it asks
    you for a username and you synced your device before, put in 'test" if you
    did not sync before create a hotsync name.

  • Unable to open cvirte but files are there

    When I try to run my CVI gui on a new Win7 machine, I get the message "Unable to open C:windows\System32\cvirte\bin\cvirte.rsc".  But when I look in C:windows\System32, that folder and files are there.  I re-installed CVI/RTE 2013 SP2 just in case, but get the same result.  Tried running as an administrator, but get the same thing.  Probably something simple, but thanks for any advice.

    Are you sure it's not the other way around? The files in system32 should be a subset of the files in syswow64, not the other way around. The syswow64 folder has cvirt4.rsc and msrt4.txt, which are not expected to be in the system32 folder. All other files should be the same.
    Assuming the files are installed correctly, then this is going to be a bit trickier to figure out. Do you still have the CVI ADE working successfully in your old computer? If so, can you build a CVI program in that computer (a simple example from the CVI examples folder should do), then copy that program's .exe along with any other needed files, such as .uir files, to the problem computer and try to run the .exe? This will help us narrow down the problem to the ADE or the run-time engine.

  • Music is greyed out on iPod touch, it reads as empty, but files are still there?

    Hi all,
    I have a 32g iPod Touch that has never had a problem thus far.
    Yesterday, I connected it as usual and went to play a song from the iPod via iTunes. The song played perfectly fine. I had the iPod on shuffle, and after that song was over, it went through every song and "greyed them out" with the symbol. I then unconnected it and reconnected it. On the iPod itself, it states that I have "no content." Yet all of the music files are *still there* when I reconnect the iPod, but they're greyed out.
    I have reconnected/unconnected it numerous times (all safely) to try and figure this out. Sometimes, when I connect the iPod, the bar on the bottom of the information page shows that I have 24-ish gigs of music--which is correct. But out of nowhere, the bar will go back to saying that I only have apps and photos, no audio. I've restarted iTunes, restarted my computer, restarted the actual iPod--nothing helps.
    I can't sync the entire library back to iTunes because I manually manage my songs and most of the music is on an external hard drive. I'm aware that this means that the songs are greyed out in iTunes because the actual file isn't there. However, this has never been a problem on the actual iPod before.
    I updated my iPod to 5.1 earlier this week with no problems. I haven't added any new music to the iPod itself. I literally did nothing different from usual. I do have songs from other sources than iTunes, which could mean a corrupt file, but I didn't add anything new in the past week.
    I'm aware that a restore would fix this, and I'm okay with doing that...however, I'm more concerned as to WHY this happened in the first place. The loss of files came out of nowhere, with no improper syncs or improper disconnects, no new music, no new updates and nothing new being done. I just don't want to put all of the songs back on the iPod and have this happen again.
    Anyone have any ideas? Thanks. :]

  • Recovered photos from bad driver, but files are .ithmb, & won't convert!!!

    Hi, .. My hard-drive was damaged, and Time Machine backed-up everything on the external drive, except my second iPhoto Library, called iPhoto Library-2, .. and Genius Bar couldn't find the reason, nor could they fix it. For some reason Time Machine just saved thumbnails, and the dates and the locations were all intact.
    However, when the technician tried to recover data from the bad drive, using Mac Drive, Media Four, via PC, all the pictures from Library-2 has .ithmb extension. Not Library one. Library one is fine just like time-machine back-up. I used File Juicer to convert .ithmb files into readable file, but it couldn't do it.
    My question is, .. Has this happened to anyone? Why the rescued files are .ithmb? Did we recover the data in a wrong way? Are the picture in Library 2 corrupted, thus damaged drive, & the thumbnails? Should we use another software to recover? Is the problem using a PC to recover instead of a Mac?
    Thank you in-advance for your help. Babak
    P.S. Time-Machine's back-up shows Library 2 thumbnails, under 1GB, which is no way 19,000 pictures be under 1GB, but the data recovery rescue shows 14GB. .. I'm very confused what to do. Specially, that all the pictures from my iPhone was accidentally erased the next day by iTunes, even-though I stopped the sync, somehow pictures were deleted. So, my only hope is rescuing the pictures from the bad drive.

    Hi, I don't know if you're still looking for an answer, but I can tell you that you can easily convert those .ithmb files to viewable .jpgs files on your working pc. It's a bit time consuming but easy. Don't waste your money on expensive software or recovery options, because they will not work. This is freeware and it's a very small command line program. You can download it for free here:
    http://www.4shared.com/file/50707723/37b8a1ad/iThmbConv.html
    Now follow these steps:
    1. Create a new foder called Thumbs as a subdirectory of your hard drive. I assume this your C: drive. (example C:\Thumbs)
    2. Copy all the .ithmb files into this folder.
    3. Download the iThmbConv program file directly into this folder.
    4. Now, on your pc desktop, go to Start, Run and enter cmd in the box. Hit okay.
    5. When the black screen command prompt comes on, type cd.. at the end of the prompt line. Press Enter.
    6. The next line should only show C:\> If not, enter cd.. again to just show C:\>
    7. Now type cd Thumbs When you press enter, the next line should be C:\Thumbs>
    8. Assuming one of your .ithmb picture files is named T100. (They are all T and a number, so I'm using T100 as an example) Now type iThumbConv T100.ithmb
    You should now see a few copies of your original .ithmb file in the Thumbs folder in a format that is viewable on your pc such as .jpg or whatever.
    Repeat step #8 for each additional .ithmb file you want to convert. Then, you can ditch the the copies you don't need.
    uming, but easy.

  • Aperture crashes when files are imported

    I am using the Aperture 3 trial currently, and while it starts up just fine, whenever I try to import my iPhoto library Aperture chugs along for a bit, and then crashes. When I open Aperture again, most of my events are there (as projects) but they are almost all empty. A select few appear to have photos in them. If I try to import again, the same crash happens. If I import folders as projects from my pictures folder, it crashes. If I delete the Aperture library and try to import again with a fresh start, it crashes. Right now I really don't know what to do about this, I want to try Aperture, but I can't very well do that without being able to get my photos into it.
    Admittedly, my iPhoto library is rather large (40,000+ photos), but iPhoto can handle this, and I should think Aperture was built for this.
    Thanks for the help!

    I am having a very similar problem. I purchased the full version and get the exact same results. I rebuilt my library using iphoto's rebuild tools and the crash still occurs. I have rebuilt the library using iphoto library manager and the crash still occurs. I am frustrated that I spent 200 dollars and I am unable to import my iPhoto library. Any help would be great.
