Computer crash -- Moving iPod music to new computer

My old computer crashed and I had to reformat the harddrive. How do I move the 3200 songs back from my iPod to iTunes?
Thanks

If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.

Ok, I won't say anything about backing up, it sounds like you have learned your lesson. Anyway, forum regular, Zevoneer, has written a very extensive explanation on how to move your library iPod>iTunes. Please see Zevoneer's post on the following link.

  • Old computer died, need iPod music on new laptop

My old computer died before I could make files and transfer library. How do I get my music from my iPod to my new laptop? I need help!!

    Hello kris10new,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link after the Apple support document below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

  • Old puter crashed i lost everything want to put ipod music on new puter

My old computer crashed and I lost everything including my music. I have my ipod with all of my music on it and want to download it to my new computer. I read the instructions for putting music on my new computer but it calls for having the old computer which i do not have. There has to be a way to put the music on my new computer, I have itunes downloaded but am afraid to try cuz i dont want to lose everything. PLEASE help, i would be forever grateful!!!!!!!!

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you only want to copy your purchases to the computer that can be done using iTunes, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (including purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

    Comparison of iPod managers
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

    Floola Mac & Windows

iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Need help moving iPod library to new Mac Mini

The bad news is that my 4 year old Mirror Door Dual Processor PowerMacG4 finally gave up the ghost on me. The good news is that I then went out and bought a shinny new Mac Mini. Thinking it would be easy (what was I thinking) I then attached my iPod 2Gen 15GB to my new iTunes and it promptly wiped it clean for me (read as PANIC, as I have literally thousands of dollars invested in iTunes music). Not to be a snob, but I also own a iPod Mini (4 GB) that also had a copy of the library on it.
HOW do I copy the library to my new Mac?? I also have a Mac Powerbook 12" and it has a dated copy of the library on it...
Is there ANYTHING that is easy with these Mac's??

  • Moving ITunes Music to New Hard Drive

Hi! I would like to free up space on my internal hard drive by purchasing an external one this weekend and moving the music files to this drive. I read this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748 and I still have just one more question. I am not sure if others ended up having a library that looks like this, but in addition to the organized folders (by artist) in the ITunes folder, in C:\Documents and Settings\Dana Christine\My Documents\My Music there are about 100 MP3 files (not organized, just sitting there) which are a part of my library. How can I go about getting these files moved over as well? Will the process described in the link I attached take care of moving these files also? No tutorials on moving files that I have seen has covered such an issue. I really appreciate your help.

If these MP3 files are in the iTunes library (you can play them in iTunes), they will get copied when you Consolidate library.

Can anyone help me figure out how to continue to use my iPod with iTunes on my new laptop? It won't let me access my music on my iPod, saying I must erase all of my music in order to use iTunes. The problem is that the original laptop that I registered iTunes/iPod on crashed. The only place I have all of my music saved is on my iPod. I don't want to erase it all. I am very frustrated!!

  • Computer hard drive crashed. Need to transfer iPod music to new computer -- how to do this??

My Windows 7 computer crashed, and now I need to transfer my tunes from my iPod Nano to my new computer. I have both purchased songs and songs I uploaded from CD's.  Can anyone help tell me how to do this?  When I plug in my iPod the iTunes software only shows the songs that I purchased from the iStore, not the ones I uploaded from CD's.
    Help appreciated.  Gail

You can't do it without third party software.  Do a google search for 'transfer ipod to itunes'.  This is the first hit to come up, but there are others.

  • Old computer crashed and want music in new computer

Hey all! I have a problem with getting access to all my old music. My old desktop computer crashed so I cannot access my iTunes from it anymore. I downloaded iTunes on my new computer, but I cannot retrieve my music from my old iTunes. The only help topics on this website that I found even slightly related to my problem tell me to go onto my old iTunes and use my iPod as a "disk" of sorts. However, this is not an option for me. The majority of my music was not bought on iTunes, either, so I'm not able to get access to it by activating this computer. Any help you could offer would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

If for some reason you have failed to do the basics and maintain a backup copy of your computer - not good - then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some countires:

I need to figure out how to load my music from a previous computer onto this new computer just using my Ipod (all of my music is already on the Ipod). I'm completely useless when it comes to computers so if anyone can help me it would be fantastic!! Thanks!

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well.
