Computer crash, need to transfer data from ipod to mac!

Judging from the other posts, it seems that the iPod only officially does a one-way sync computer to iPod.
However, my mac DIED and took all my contacts, calendar and music with it. It had to be reformatted, and all that is left is on my iPod.
Do I really have no chance to recover it?
Seems like every article someone posts with info that could help is an unknown link. Are these Apple guys trying to sabatoge our chances of doing a "reverse-sync" by corrupting the links?
Will someone please direct me to software or information that will help me recover my info and put my music back onto my computer?

Computer Crashed, need to download music from Ipod to new computer

My old computer with all of my music on it crashed and is totally kapaupt. However, like a big dummy, I did not have a back-up for my music library. Is there any way to transfer my music from my Ipod to my new computer????
I have a 20GB Ipod with click wheel. My new computer is running Windows 7.

As you may have already found out that while we can transfer music from iTunes to an iPod, we cannot transfer music from iPod to iTunes.
You need to move your music from your iPod to your new iTunes and one of the ways that you can do this is with the help of a third party software.
Please read [*_This Discussion Thread_*|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10570955#10570955] and pay particular attention to the post from Zevoneer. In his post all available software is listed which you can use to accomplish what you want. Most of the software is free. Good Luck.

Old Hard drive crashed, need to transfer music from iPod to new computer

Hello. My old hard drive crashed and I bought a new computer. Unfortunately I did not back up any files from my old computer and lost all files including iTunes music. All I have is the music from my iPod. I would like some help or if anyone knows anything about how to transfer the music from my iPod to my new computer. Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

If you have purchased songs from the iTunes Music Store, then those are pretty easy to transfer to your computer. You'll just need to follow [this instructions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305465].
All your other songs (for example, those ripped from your CD's), you'll need to use any 3rd party program to transfer them to your iTunes library!
Some can also transfer your playlists, videos, ratings, podcast...

I had an external hard drive with all my music, photos etc saved on it, but it was in a bag that got stolen, so now, the only place it's all stored is on my iPod (30GB).

You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. The ONLY thing you can do to turn off Find My iPhone is to have the correct password. There is no way around it. You can get help with the password: If you forgot your Apple ID password

hey, Is is possible to use the ipod as a hard drive to transfer data from/to Mac and windows PCs?
I see no problem transfering data from/to my mac to the ipod. But I cannot see the ipod on the PC. When I plug the USB cable to my windows PC, it shows a popup message "external disk is not formated. Do you want to format it?".

Windows cannot read a Mac formatted iPod.
Macs can read Windows fomratted iPods.
You need to run iTunes for Windows, then Restore the iPod.
It will now work on both Mac and PC.

Old computer crashed & have to put music from iPod to new computer.HELP?

Our old Desktop computer crashed, finaly have a new computer, but am unsure hoe to transfer all content (music, games, movies & photos) from iPod classic to new computer.
Our last computer run on Windows XP & the new one is Vista, have already down loaded new version of iTunes to new computer, but don't want to plug in iPod, just yet. Don't want to loose all our music (over 2000 songs ) Some are from the iTunes store & some are from our CD colletion, which took ages to put on computer. I also have over 200 photos that were on old computer & is on iPod that I would like to transfer to new computer. Have also purchased movies from iPod Lounge (not iTunes) & am hoping that I will be able to transfer these as well. I have searched & have found several different ways you can do this, but am still unsure of the whole process. If anyone out there has had this issue,a bit of guidence would be appreciated. Thanks

Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library.There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to the iTunes preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'control+shift' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.

For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump and iPodRobot.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

Need to transfer data from one external hd to another hd

Hi, I need to transfer movies from one external hd to another external hd - destination hd is formatted currently as NTSC, source hd is formatted currently as Mac OSx extended (journalled).
I believe I need to transfer data across to different hd before I can reformat source hd to MSDOS - fat. Then after reformatting source hd I want to transfer data back from destination hd to source hd, to allow this to be viewed on TV & PC...
I have tried copying & dragging from one to another, doesn't work (on desktop, or in Finder).
Any help welcome, thank you.

When you reformat a drive it erases all data. You'll need to buy a second external drive.
Note: you can reformat a single partition on a drive. More info
I like the Seagate USB 3.0 Backup plus drives. Works on USB 2.0 ports. They come formatted for PC but easy to format in Disk Utility.
I don't recommend Western Digital because of the boot problem with some of their drives. LaCie makes good drives. All Mac formatted drives will cost more and it’s easy to reformat with Disk Utility. Do not use the software that comes with the drives. It’s recommended that you use Apple’s Disk Utility.
Prices vary but this gives you an idea of what you’ll find. As you notice the second and third TB is usually only $15 more per TB. It's not uncommon to find a 1T is more than the 2T

Haw much time needed to transfer data from one mac to another throughout FireWire

It has been 15 hours since I started transferring data from my old mac to my new one and I cant get throughout the process any tip about the estimated time the amount of data in GB is around 200

That does seem too long for a 200GB transfer, even via FireWire 400. I suspect there's a problem on one of the hard drives that is preventing some data from being read or written successfully. I would cancel the copy process and use Disk Utility to run its Repair Disk routine on each of the drives.
