Computer crashed, how to keep songs on ipod from disappearing

my computer has crashed and i have reinstalled all of my programs including my itunes. I am aftraid to pulg in my i pod to download new songs because i am afraid that all of my songs on my ipod will be erased. How di i prevent this from happening???

Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not), there's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.

  • Computer Crash- How do I prevent my iPod from clearing all the songs?

My computer crashed recently, and all the files and folders have been deleted. I still have the songs on my iPod, a second generation nano, is there any way I can get the songs from my iPod back onto my computer? I've heard that if I plug my iPod back in, it'll clear all of the songs. Any help is appreciated!

This question has been asked a lot. itunes blocks the function of transferring the songs (not purchased) from ipod back to computer, you can have a look of below answer, same issue: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6301496#6301496

  • Computer crashed, how to get music off ipod onto itunes

My computer crashed, I lost everything. Is there a way to get the music I have on my ipod into my itunes? Other than just the purchased music? Thanks for the help!!
    Sunny

    Hello sunnydae,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

  • My old computer crashed how do i get the music from my ipod to sinc with my itunes library?

My old computer crashed how do i get the music from my ipod to sinc with my itunes library?

You should be able to copy iTunes purchases to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases. For music that you've bought from other sources or copied from your own CDs then have you not got a backup of them on, for example, an external drive that you can copy onto the computer ? If not then you will need to find a third-party program to copy them off - this post mentions some that were around a couple of years ago, whether they still exist and work I don't know.

  • Old computer crashed. dont wanna delete songs off ipod...

o.k. so my old computer crashed and i want to somehow keep my songs on my ipod and add more with my new computer without deleting them. is this possible? i'm gonna have to use a new itunes. so is there anyway to keep my songs on my ipod?

are you sure none of my songs will get deleted from my ipod because i have over 3,000 songs and dont wanna have to build it up again
Yes. You will be asked for confirmation before any songs are deleted from the iPod when it is hooked up to a new computer. If you choose not to delete the songs, you can follow the instructions linked to above unless the iPod is an iPod shuffle. If the iPod is an iPod shuffle, you can still stop the music from being deleted from it, but you cannot transfer any additional music.

  • Old Computer Crashed - Can't Update Songs To iPod On New One

My old computer crashed, I installed itunes on my new one and purchased some songs. Now I can't get the new songs to copy to my ipod. Itunes recognizes the ipod when I plug it in, and "updating ipod" flashes quickly but the songs don't copy. Also when I plug in the ipod the songs on it come up but I can't play them from itunes. Can anyone help me out?

First try resetting the ipod by holding the center and menu button for 6 to 10 sec.
If that doesn't work, go here and install the latest ipod updater http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
Once thats done goto start>all programs>ipod>ipod updater 06-28-2006 and restore the ipod. Restore will wipe the ipod clean of everything and then you use iTUnes to load it back up. More on restore can be read here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983

  • Old computer crashed, how can I use my ipod mini on my new computer. I no longer have the original itunes software cd.

I have an ipod mini. My computer crashed and no longer have software. Can I still use my mini to go into itunes and buy music? I have a new computer, windows 7. Thanks.

Yes, you should still be able to use your iPod Mini on your new Windows 7 PC. Simply download iTunes from Apple's website and you should be good to go.  You don't need the original software that came with it anymore as it's now bundled with the iTunes application.

  • My computer crashed. how do i restore my content from my phone back to my computer

how do i restore my content from my phone to my itunes on a new computer

    1) authorize iTunes on the new machine for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPhone with it.
above covers your purchased content. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.
also, there are PhoneView and iRip.

  • Computer crashed, how do I get my Ipod songs onto a new computer with itune

Please help. My computer died and I lost everything on it. I have a new computer and have downloaded a new itunes 7.0
How do I get my songs off my Ipod to my new computer and then to the new itunes

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
    CopyPod Windows Only
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting to your new computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Windows XP Computer Crashed - How to move songs to another PC

Hello, I have a 30gb Ipod Video. I operate in a Windows XP Pro environment.
My home computer's hard drive crashed. I would like to move my songs to a work PC temporarily until I can replace my hard drive. I installed Itunes, but it has never been set up for my IPOD.
How can I save my songs, pictures and videos?
    Thanks.

First of all try this method which works on some Windows PCs..
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
There is also CopyPod. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free.
If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.

  • If my computer crashed how can I get my itunes from my ipod onto my new pc without losing when syncing up?

my pc crashing some time ago -- want to add new songs to my iPod but don't want to lose the songs I have on there now.  Anyway to do that?

You should transfer the song files from your iPod to your current computer, add them to the iTunes library, and sync your iPod to that library (after confirming all of those songs are there now).
Any songs purchased from the iTunes Store can be re-downloaded, at no cost, using the Purchased screen in the iTunes Store.
For other songs, you can't transfer from iPod to computer using iTunes.  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on "ipod transfer," you should get some links.  Add "mac" to the search if you use a Mac.
That would be the safest way to proceed, because you will then have a backup of the iPod's songs on the computer (in case the iPod breaks, gets lost, or needs a "Restore").  However, if you decline to sync when you first connect the iPod, it should get set to "Manually manage music."  When it is set that way, you should be able to add new songs to it manually (by dragging songs to it in iTunes).  But again, it would be safest to have ALL the songs (on the iPod) in the iTunes library on the computer first.

  • Computer crashed how do i get my music from ipod onto new computer

basically my old laptop crashed and there's no way i can back up my music from that computer
is there a way i can take the music thats already on my ipod and put it on another computer

You'll need to copy the music currently on your iPod to your new PC and into iTunes first before you can sync it to the new iPod.
