Computer Crashed - iPod Touch Wants to Erase Itself

My computer crashed and I had to get a new hard drive. I had just saved all my songs onto a flash drive, but did not do the 'proper' backup. Now when I plug my iPod touch into my computer, it tells me in order to continue, all of my items - music, apps/games - will need to be erased. None of the music was purchased - all songs were transferred/imported -, all of the apps are free apps. Does anyone know a safe way I can get back on iTunes without permanently losing all of my stuff? Also, will I need to re-register my iPod if/when I get back on iTunes?

Welcome to the discussions,
Make sure your new computer is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.
Restoring: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there to do it the other way, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0
Apps can be downloaded again for free: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

due to the virus attack i had to format my windows laptop...now when i installed new itunes software i had to sync my ipod touch again but it says that if i do it then the data present on my ipod touch will be erased as it is syncd to some older library... how should i protect my ipod touch data?

With all you media (apps, music) in the iTunes library connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup. Do that by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up. Then restore the iPod from that backup.
Note the the iPod backup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music.

  • How to transfer a PDF file in computer to ipod touch?

how can i transfer a pdf in my computer to ipod touch? the pdf could be added to itunes library but i dont know how to sync it from itunes to ipod touch., normal sync doesnt work. (there is no disk mode in ipod touch so couldn't use that either). does anyone know how to do this??? i would really appreciate the help.

i think you can email it to yourself as an attachment and read it.
otherwise you will need to download an app which will allow you do do this. the ereader Stanza is free, and if you download the computer version i'm pretty sure you can use it to transfer PDF files to your iPod.

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tend to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Try connecting it to your iTunes library in recovery mode using the instructions in this Apple support document.

  • The computer my ipod touch was synced to crashed and i had to get a new hard drive. When I tried to sync it with the new hard drive, it said that is was registered with a different apple id and i would have to erase everything to sync it. help!!!!!!!!!!!!

how do i sync it with the compter without deleting all data?

The first thing you can do is transfer your iTunes purchases from your iPod Touch to your PC.  To do this, choose File -> Transfer Purchases in iTunes.  You should authorize your new PC before doing this by clicking the Store drop down menu and selecting Authorize this Computer. Then enter in your Apple ID/iTunes Store account credentials.
For all other content that was not purchased from the iTunes store, see this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different software available to assist you with this task.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2452022?start=0&tstart=0
Finally, right->click on your iPod Touch under the Devices section in iTunes, and choose Backup.  Then after erasing and syncing your iPod, restore from that back up.  Or better yet, copy a backup from your old PC to your new one if at all possible. Here is more information on backing up and restoring your iPod .  Doing so will restore all of your App data.

  • Old computer crashed - don't want to lose music on iPod

Hello folks, can someone please point me in the right direction so that I can recover without wiping all my music.
The old computer terminally crashed, windows is 100% "dead" though my music is still on there (and on my iPod).
I've put a 2nd large hard disk (F; drive) into another PC and hope to use that for iTunes. I've managed to copy all the music from the old dead PC (by using the disk as a slave in another system) onto this drive.
Is there a way I can either:
    1. Install a "clean" iTunes onto the F: drive and copy everything from my iPod into it?
    2. Install iTunes and pick up the existing music library that I've copied across.
    3. Install iTunes and import everything I've copied reasonably automatically.
It's a LOT of music - a large part of an 80GB iPod. The C; drive is too small, but the F: drive is 160GB.
Thanks for any tips. I really don't want to copnnect my iPod and lose all its contents, and the battery is nearly flat too.

*Is there a way I can ........ Install a "clean" iTunes onto the F: drive and copy everything from my iPod into it?*
1). Install a new copy of iTunes and connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • IPod Touch wants to connect to iTunes, but iTunes Freezes

So, my iPod Touch is the one before the one with the camera. Can't remember what gen that is supposed to be. Whatever. Anyways, about two years ago with on iTunes update, my iPod totally reformatted or whatever and I lost everything. I had trouble putting everything back onto the iPod. I got so frustrated that I stopped trying and haven't touched it since. Now I'm going on holiday and want music to take for the flights so I decided to give it another shot since there have been quite a few updates since then. I plugged in the iPod, it took a few minutes to charge up since it was absolutely dead before trying to connect. The second that it did, iTunes froze. I tried unplugging it. iTunes instantly worked again. Plugged the iPod back in and it froze. I repeated this multiple times and got the same result. I then went into my iPod settings and cleared all the content. Took over an hour to erase everything. Once it was done, the iPod indicated that it needed to be plugged into iTunes. I plugged it in and BAM, iTunes froze again and the iPod continues to indicate that it wants to connect despite being connected. What do I do?!?!?!? Please help.

I have looked at it, but it didn't solve any of my issues. A while ago I went to the family computer and tried plugging my iPod in there. Magically, it worked right away. iTunes was not freezing and my iPod was recognised. Unfortunately, that computer has no music on it so it didn't help. I returned to my laptop, plugged in my iPod and it worked! I thought my problem was solved, but I was sadly mistaken. From there, I waited 2 hours to transfer all my stuff over. I ejected, and unplugged. I then realised that I'd accidentally forgotten to transfer some of my albums into iTunes itself which I wanted on my iPod. I went to plug my iPod back in and once again it would not recognise. I went back to the family computer, plugged it in and worked without a problem. When I returned to my laptop, once again it would not connect. I cannot figure out what the problem is. I ran an iTunes Diagnostic test. All the tests were passed. I even got the "iPod found" result. The sync test that occured afterwards, however, failed instantly. I tried the Diagnostic test on the family computer. When it came time to do the sync test, a black rectangular box popped up and ran through some stuff (sorry, I'm not very tech savvy). Afterwards, it said the sync test had been passed. This black rectangular box has never appeared on my laptop.
    What could this mean?

  • Change home computer for Ipod touch

My son has Ip an ipod touch, (purchased last year xmas 2009) think its the 3rd gen. When he got it we had a different computer which he initially logged as his home computer. This has since broke and we brought him a new laptop for xmas. I have authorised this laptop but I am unable to access the apps properly through Itunes. I want to be able to manage them, delete etc but I am unable. Can anybody advise how I can change the home computer to the new laptop so as I can properly manage the apps on the ipod??? Thanks

Transfer the apps from the ipod to the computer. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases
Ipod touch will sync with one computer at a time. When you sync to another, it will erase the current content and replace with content from the new computer.
Move everything from your backup copy of the old computer to the new one first.

  • When restoring your ipod touch, will it erase everything on it?

    hello everyone
I was wondering if restoring your ipod touch will erase everything on it because my computer does not seem to be recongizing my ipod nor is itunes. And I was afraid that if I restored my ipod that everything will be gone from it. The reason I am worried about this is that I have important notes that i have typed on it and a lot of aps that I do not want to put back on (too much work).

If you restore to original settings it will erase everything on your iPod Touch.
Check out some of the troubleshooting documents about the iPod not being recognized in Windows before restoring. See: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
If you must restore you can recover back to the last backup created when you last synced your iPod.

You can't sync or drag your non iTMS music back directly from an iPod to iTunes. The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. If your iPod is set to update automatically you just need to take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.
