Download the latest iTunes and reinstall it, you'll get it here: iTunes
There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod. This is just a selection.
YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
PodPlayer Windows Only
iPodAgent Windows Only
Senuti Mac Only
Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these and pick one you are happy that you understand and can use. They are generally quite straightforward.
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive through Windows posted in this thread: iPod to iTunes
You may already be using the iPod in manual update mode. However when you connect, if you are getting a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, click *No*. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list. Change the update setting in Preferences>iPod to "manually manage songs and playlists" Managing Your Songs Manually
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows, hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac you hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.
Another way is to connect your iPod and before it starts to sync, click the little X on the right hand side of the display beside the "Do Not Disconnect" message. The display is the little window to the right of the iTunes control buttons: iPod Interface
Or you could look at the method described in this link: How to keep iTunes from automatically updating your iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.
Go with whichever method you feel most comfortable. Remember what I said above, if you are getting a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, click *No*.

Installing iTunes and signing in does not make your media magically appear on the computer.
The media is only where you put it.
To move the media from your old computer to your new computer, you need to copy the iTunes folder form your old computer (or the backup of your old computer) to the new computer.

  • Updated iphone, lost everything, how do I get my purchased ringtones back on my phone?

I updated to the latest version today.  I don't know what happened, but I had no choice but to restore my phone to factory settings.  My most recent back up was several months ago, because I got a new computer and can't get my entire iTunes library to transfer to the new computer.  I've tried every single thing that has been suggested in the help sections online and nothing works.
I can figure out how to get my purchased songs back on my phone, but how about my ringtones??? I'm even plugged into my old computer, which had the last sync, and I see all of my ringtones, but there's no option to download them to my phone.
    Help.

Did you fail to transfer itunes purchases to your computer before updating?
You only get one download of ringtones.  As always it is your responsiblity to backup your content.
You can try contacting itunes support and asking for an exception.

  • MAYDAY. Hard drive crashed, lost everything, how do I get my music back on.

So hard drive completely shut down on my and when I took it in, the guy confirmed I had lost all info on the drive, obviously including Itunes. I don't have the original disk that my Ipod came with. How do I get Itunes re-installed so that when I plug my ipod in, it won't think this is a new computer and delete my files?

1). Download and install iTunes from the Apple web site. Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • HT4623 Updated my iPhone 3gs yesterday (1st time ever).  Backing up content to icloud but would not quit.  Screen would not disappear.  Finally disconnected phone from computer and lost EVERYTHING.  Can I get it back?

Updated my iPhone 3gs yesterday to ios 6 (first time ever).  Backed up my content to icloud, but it wouldn't quit.  Remained on that screen for HOURS.  Finally disconnected phone from computer.  Still would not go away--just the "circle of death."  Restarted phone and lost EVERYTHING (pics, contacts and apps).  Can I get them back?  Are they somewhere out in cyberspace or lost for good?

You're not alone. I am having similar problems with my Ipod 5th gen 30gb.
When I connect it to my laptop (Vista - basic) it is not recognised by itunes. Itunes simply locks up.
So far I have tried the following to no avail:
Checked my pc's device manager - it recognises the device and says it is functioning properly.
Checked the drivers to make sure they are upt to date.
Uninstalled & reinstalled a previous version of itunes (as it worked fine before the latest release).
    Reinstalled the latest itunes.
    Reset the ipod.
Put the ipod into disk mode and reconnected to itunes.
Have tried to use the windows tool to scan and fix any bad sectors but it fails to complete a scan without locking that up as well.
Placed into disk mode when fully charged and then allowed the battery to drain completely. Then reconnected ipod (in disk mode)and it still is not recognised and locks up itunes.
At this point I dont really want to part with another $300 odd dollars for a new one.

  • Computer Crashed...How do I get my purchased music back?

I purchased a ton of music on itunes...until my computer crashed. I got a new computer and was wondering if there was anyway I could get those songs I bought back on my new computer.
    Thanks

If you have an iPod the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
If you have no iPod and the purchases weren't backed up I'm afraid the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage." iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on any of the links on this page you'll find a space at the bottom to email your query: iTMS Customer Service

  • Computer Crashed...How do I get my purchased applications back?

My hard drive recently crashed. After getting everything I could back up and running, I connected my Touch to Itunes and it removed all my apps and saved info from my Touch. Where did they go? ITunes doesn't show my apps in the apps folder either although my history shows I purchased them. How do I get them back? Any chance of finding my saved info that ITunes removed? Thanks for any help anyone can give!!!

You can downlaod them again for free, see this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

I had an iTunes account on an old computer with over 300 songs then when I updated my computer to the MacBook Pro it deleted all my songs when I signed into iTunes. Is there a way I can get those songs back?

You should copy everything from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.
