Computer Crashes after Ram upgrade

I have a new powerbook (serial # W8544xxxxxx) with the new video card, screen resolution, etc. The system came with 512mb DDR2 ram, and I recently bought another stick of 512 at Newegg.
Now it recognizes it in the system fine, but the computer seems to crash when the computer heats up. When I run processor intensive applications, it will either just freeze or freeze and slowly turn the entire screen white. This happened right after I installed the Ram, never had a problem before.
Is this another part of the lower memory slot problems I've been hearing about?
This is the ram I bought : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227106
The ram works great, until the computer heats up, then it's all downhill.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
What you're seeing is typical of inexpensive RAM. While RAM may meet the stated DDR2 specs, not all will work with they way Apple's architecture uses the memory. This isn't, btw, limited to the series of PB you own.
Crucial, Kingston (not Valueram line), and Samsung are 3 memory brands that consistently perform well in our PB's. Crucial, for example, guarantees their memory will work if chosen off their memory selector on their web site. You can scan the discussions for other brands that people have found worked, too.
Crucial is at http://www.crucial.com
Kingston is at http://www.kingston.com
Samsung is available from a number of sources, one being OWC at http://www.macsales.com

  • Premiere Pro CS6 crashing after RAM upgrade

I just got Premiere Pro almost a week ago after using FCP for years. I was just getting accustomed to it and thought I would upgrade my RAM to help Dynamic Link run smoother. I doubled it from 4 GB to 8 GB today and now Premiere Pro crashes either immediately or after about 20 minutes. My computer is a 2009 Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz. The new ram is from OWC.com. I ran a RAM test in Tech Tools and it passed as having no problems. Can anyone suggest anything? I would hate to have to go back to 4 GB and be limited to that.

    UPDATE:
This problem is not fixed at all. I went about 2 hours without a crash then had about 5 of them in a row. I have been reading everywhere trying to find a place to start. A full system rebuild and reinstall would take me a day or 2 that I don't have. The crashes happen any time, sometimes at startup, sometimes when I'm editing, sometimes when I am not doing anything. I get the "serious error" message and sometimes just get a "quit unexpectedly" along with this log:

  • 2008 Mac Mini Crashes after ram upgrade

I just upgraded my Ram from 1 to 2 GB on my Mac Mini Intel Core 2 Duo and it was a bad stick so I reaplaced it and it works great but I was typing something in to Firefox to search it and my screen ram multicolored line and a popup came up but I didnt see it because of the lines so I did a hard shutoff and started it back up and it is runing fine.  I am still scared to use it because of the crash. Anyhelp?

    Hi Zeke,
Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & the Startup right after that for clues.

  • Crashes after RAM upgrade?

    Hi All,
I recently upgraded my RAM from 2GB to 4GB. All of my upgrades have been in equal increments (All 256mb sticks, now in all 8 slots). Since the upgrade I have had several crashes where the screen freezes, a grayish tint drops over it and a message prompting me to restart manually.
From what I can tell nothing is being damaged, other than unsaved work, but obviously it is not a good thing.
Is it possible 4GB is too much for my video card (128 Mb)?
Any insight or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    J

    To Recap:
Memtest checked out okay, but I was still experiencing crashes. Finally tracked down my AHT DVD. First run of AHT reported an error on my B: drive before it even got to the memory.
Repaired disc-came out okay the next time. Second test showed DIMM 7 with a problem. Exact Error code = 2MEM/104/4:DIMM7/J44
Before removing any RAM I tried resetting the vram. Still got the same error code.
So, I removed the last pair of RAM sticks. Ran into yet another Hard Drive error when running AHT again- repaired permissions- checked out okay. Memory checked out okay without the last pair.
So I assume I just got some faulty RAM, and I will contact OWC about exchanging it.

  • IMac keeps crashing after RAM upgrade

I used the website crucial.com to max out the RAM in my iMac. I ordered the RAM they said was for my computer but ever since I have installed it it seems my mac crashes almost on a daily bases. Sometimes its when openining an aplication. Sometimes its when coming back from screen saver mode. When it crashes everything on the screen freezes including the mouse. On occasion the screen will just go grey or black and be unresponsive. How can I fix this? What could the issue be? I keep my iMac updated when it tells me to update but what can be done?

Yeah, sounds like classic symptoms of a bad stick. Odd that crucial send you a bad one- they're usually pretty good. Happens occasionally to anyone though, I suppose. I suspect they'll probably be willing to replace it.
If you got two sticks, maybe you could try booting the mac with one at a time, it's probably only one stick with the failure.

  • Crashing after RAM upgrade - really the RAM?

I upgraded my mid 2010 iMac with this RAM http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B004TQH6U8/ref=ox_ya_os_product
It is supposed to be compatible and the iMac reads it and reports 12Gb.
The first lot started crashing my iMac when I processed RAW files with Canon Digital Photo Professional. My assumption was that the memory was bad and that it couldn't handle a resource intensive task like image processing...because the Mac wasn't crashing otherwise. When I tried to run Rember, it just crashed the Mac.
I got a replacement set and it's crashed when I tried to convert a RAW file! It doesn't crash it when just viewing the files. So now I'm thinking it may not actually be the RAM. I'm going to apply the update to the Canon software to see if that makes a difference, but I wondered what other steps I should be taking to address the situation. Thing is, the Mac didn't crash when converting RAW files with the original 4Gb of RAM. Could it be the way memory is allocated or something?
    Thanking you in anticipation.

Crucial is usually good for Apple products. They have this System Scanner which will check out your system and tell you exactly what ram to get.
OWC's Apple Mac Memory and service is  also good.
    regards

  • Desktop computer crashes after sleep mode since upgrade to Snow Leopard

Since I upgraded my power Mac to Snow Leopard in December, I've had nothing but problems, all of which appear to stem from when it comes out of sleep mode. This computer and all applications were rock solid in Leopard! I also have a mac book running identical programs and that IS rock solid on Snow Leopard. I have a 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon processor with 10 GB ram.
I did a complete re-install of SL and all programs as per the Apple instructions.
Basically, the computer crashes after sleep mode. I've tried all the fixes I've read on the net. Here is the report thread from the last crash. Does it mean anything or throw any light on the problem to anyone?
    Thanks,
    David Wright

The problem has been identified as the RME fireface400 audio driver. I've spent some considerable time experimenting to identify the culprit. It's clear that this is what is causing all my problems since Snow Leopard. Whether it's exclusively the drivers fault or partly also due to a conflict with apple SL, I don't know, but I have crash reports if apple want to see them.
From your first post, it appears you are using Fireface audio driver version 2.64. RME released a new Snow Leopard compatible driver (version 2.65) last December. It is available at RME: Downloads. (There is also a firmware updater for the Fireface 400 there, which you might want to check out.)
It isn't at all unusual for a new OS version to require new drivers for third party hardware. References to this can be found all over the web, in "read me" files & other documentation, etc. -- it doesn't just apply to OS X but to Windows & other OS's as well. (One of the biggest problems with Vista was poor third party driver support.) In fact, the X-Lab "Resolving Kernel Panics" article specifically cautions users to make sure all such drivers are current. See section 6.1 of that article for more details.
I don't know if you missed all this somehow, but if you haven't already downloaded & installed the new RME driver (& possibly the firmware update as well), then do so now. While you are at it, check for other similar updates for any other third party hardware devices you use, using the info in section 6.1 of the X-Lab article as a guide.
Hopefully, this will resolve your issue, which (as already mentioned) is kernel panics, not crashes. If you still have problems, post more about them, being mindful of the difference between application crashes & kernel panics. Because they are fundamentally different, they have different cures, so we will need to know which type they are to offer effective help.

My computer crashed after an attempt to upgrade to Yosemite. I can't quit the installer and my MacBook keeps on restarting

I Have a 2008 Macbook Pro 15". It was running issue free until I upgraded to Yosemite. Now my logic board is fried and apple will not fix it. It started with mail accounts unable to send mail, just had to delete accounts and re- install to fix that. But, at the same time as the download, I started intermittently getting a green tint over the screen along with a snowy static like an old TV set. Fearing that my download was corrupt, I re- installed Yosemite over-writing the previous version .  The green haze kept coming and going, but I also started getting strobe style white flashes in boxes in the 4 corners of my monitor. I had to do power button forced shutdowns because of pointer and keyboard function failure. Apple Genius desk told me it appeared to be a logic board failure but my computer was too old for them to work onand referred me to a Mac Specialist Center. I was told by both places that Apple installed defective logic boards back then due to changing solder formula. They extended product warranty by adding 1 yr but that still expired in 2012. I tried to post a warning on Mac Forums twice about Yosemite being a poison pill to certain platforms and my posts were pulled. The second attempt was responded to in my personal email account stating that if I don't stop posting derogatory comments, I will be blocked from forum. I am just trying to insert warnings in posts where I can. They haven't discovered that yet. Spread the word!

    Hi laceydanielle.
It seems that the junk filter database has become corrupt. Try this:
    1. Either shut down the Internet connection before opening Mail or take Mail offline immediately after opening it.
    2. Reset the junk filter database (Preferences > Junk Mail > Reset).
    3. Go online again. The problem should be fixed now.

Maybe (because of occurrences of NetDictRequests) it is caused by internet modules which you don't have to need. I use just my local dictionaries and my ~/.stardict/stardict.cfg looks like:
    [stardict-private]
    version=1.0
    [/apps/stardict/manage_dictionaries]

    search_website_list=

    window_height=359
    hpaned_pos=114
(Well, there are some strange symbols after ".ifo"s on "dict_order_list=" line, they couldn't be pasted.)
Internet (mainly those Chinese) modules are really unusable for me, so the first thing I do when I install StarDict is I delete all occurrences of <virtualdict ... /> and <netdict ... /> in the configuration file. Maybe it will help you too if you keep just <localdict ... /> items.
There's other thing that bothers me now with StarDict - RealPeopleTTS works fine with the version 3.0.1-3 but hesitates to with the up-to-date version 3.0.2-2.

Flash Plug in is crashing after recent upgrade. I tried uninstalling, and reinstalling, still crashing. Firefox and Plug-in are current. What else can I do?

What I suggest you do here is to use Adobe's uninstaller tool to uninstall Flash first of all: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
Then reboot, go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and reinstall it.
I notice too that you have an outdated version of Shockwave For Director. You can update that via http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/

  • Computer Crashes after 1.1.1 update??

Has anyones computer crashed after update???
    heres wat happen to me!
First i got errors -48. Called Apple had to create new user account to on my computer to work around it. then logged back in to my user account and got error -50 that said unable to sync!
I go to restart my computer hoping that would fix it. It wont restart!!! I push the power button and it makes the little sound and u hear the disc drive then the screen turns gray and stays gray and doesnt do anything else!!!
    Whats going on!!!

Well the first thing I thought of was device driver problems, and there is a lot of that being reported here, although I've never seen it reported on a MAC system. I would still say though that it has something to do with your system setup, exactly what unknown, you'd have to troubleshoot that yourself, sorry, but it could be lots of things and you would know your system better than anyone else. I can tell you one thing though, I use my iPhone on my MAC, Vista 32b, and XP PRO with no problems at all. So it's got to be something inherent in your system. USB ports can be flakey on MAC's as well as windows systems, so the first thing I would do is unplug all existing USB devices, accept keyboard/mouse, and try to proceed from there.
I would also try to ignore the idiots that only want to post things like OOOooopppsss.

Mail App keeps freezing and crashing after yosemite upgrade.  Cant create new emails.  Is there a fix to these issues?

    Hi,
When I read these Threads in Yosemite I am filtered to show only the one listing Messages (the App) as the App involved.
This form of tagging a Thread no longer shows up in the current software used to run the Discussions.
Did you use the Mail and the Messages tags ?
It is difficult as many Mail help items refer to emails and "messages".
With me posting to the thread it should raise it to near the top again and maybe someone who knows about Mail will post.

ipad2 very slow and crashing after OS8 upgrade 8.1.1. I have tried to restore, using the iCloud backup (twice) and it works well for a short while then slows and crashes again.  Genius bar help said older versions of OS8 never closed apps, so a restore should fix it, but it didn't, even with a repeat.
