Computer crashes during iPad Photo Sync.

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to help my grandpa get set up on his new iPad (he's a tech-savvy grandpa, I know) but for some reason his computer crashes when trying to sync his photos with his iPad.
He's using Windows Vista, and I'm a Mac person myself so I'm not very knowledgable about Windows. I was able to get everything to properly sync to his iPad with no problems -- except photos. Music, movies, apps, all work no problem, but one of the primary reasons he wanted an iPad is to be able to carry around and show his pictures. He has about 5,000 organized and stored on his computer. When I had iTunes attempt to sync the whole folder, it would start optimizing the first 100 pictures or so when bam - blue screen of death. I'm not talking about iTunes freezing or crashing here, the whole computer crashes. It comes back up upon reboot but every single time I try to sync those pictures, it crashes. I've tried syncing individual folders with fewer pictures, but every single time it crashes.
I've done some researching online and found this support article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1502
He does have a Logitech QuickCam webcam attached to his computer. I updated the drivers with no success.
I've also tried unplugging all USB devices except the iPad, but nothing seems to work.
Anyone have any advice?
Thanks very much.

Hi.
I have a feeling this has nothing to do with how much space the iPad has left.
I am having a complete headache with synching photos and it has something to do with your updates. The original OS that came with my iPad was fine and I had many thousands of photos on the iPad (security software has been the same throughout).
With the latest update to 4.3 (and the previous one), the same photos do not synch and KILL my windows 7 laptop (hard crash to a black screen).
It is clearly something to do with the process of compressing/processing the photos. It seems as if within iTunes some other application is called to convert photos and this is done on multiple treads (I am not a computer expert so am only summising this). Somehow, windows 7 seems to be complaining that all the CPUs are at 100% all the time (I have a relatively new laptop that doesn't complain when 100% CPU is being used by any other application EXCEPT iTunes synching with the iPad).
I cannot even transfer a small directory of photos - the same photos that were able to be transferred with the original iPad software; this clearly indicates an issue with the iPad or iTunes (or likely both) updates.
Regards,

Connect your iPod to any computer with iTunes installed, highlight your device and try syncing the apps only. If it doesn't work might have to restore through iTunes. With the new iTunes and iCloud beta, you can have the iTunes list what apps are missing on your device but if you had previously purchased in the past and then have iTunes install them. You should always get in the habit of backing up your iPhone whenever you do any firmware/OS updating/upgrading or transferring over to new device. I really really really really hope you can get back at least some of your old info. I will tell you this, I have been kicking myself in the butt for not routinely backing up my iPhone when my beautiful special iPhone 4 came up missing and had to revert back to my 3GS. iPhone 5 will be released in a few months so I am holding off on purchasing a new iPhone til then, not that I did so without reservation and a little bit of iPhone 4 withdraw.

Hi there, I just purchased an album and my computer crashed during the download. When I rebooted, it continued downloading the album, but I am missing 3 tracks. Is there a way to get these files without paying for them? I'm sad to have paid for 3 tracks I didn't get! Thanks very much --

  • Computer Crashed During Album Download

Hey, my computer crashed during an album download, and I'm still being charged for the entire CD, even though I only received five tracks. I've searched iTunes and this website with no luck, but is there some kind of customer service that I can e-mail or phone about this? ..It just seems like a waste of $10. Thanks.

  • Computer crashed during software update

Currently using OS X Lion, started the latest software update and computer crashed during the update. I forced the computer to turn off, but when I turn it on, it returns to the same "crashed" condition (grey screen with an apple logo in the center, plus the time symbol spinning).
Greatly appreciate if anyone can help me. Thanks!

Back up all data, then boot from your recovery partition (command-R at startup) and reinstall the Mac OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac didn’t ship with Lion, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • I am unable to sync photos to iPad. My computer shutdown during the photo optimisation process

I am using the latest software and updates on both my iPad 2 and windows 7 32 bit laptop. I have reinstalled the latest edition of iTunes, and yet I still cannot do a synch to my iPad 2 as the computer shutdown during photo optimisation.
I have even reinstalled windows so there is nothing else I can think of.
Does anyone know how I can get photos on my iPad without making windows shutdown... It's driving me mad. Seems to be ok with my iPod and iphone4, it's just the iPad that's causing the trouble. Help me PLEASE!!!

Do you mean crashes (as in some software problem) or turns off completely (hardware issue) ?
If it's crashing then it's a different problem and you'd be better starting a new thread. If it's hardware then the same things apply as have already been mentioned above.
It's clear that iPhoto (at least the Mac version, I don't use Windows) puts a lot of load on the processor - more than most people ever do at other times. If the thermal management is not up to scratch, the processor will overheat, and the machine will just switch off without warning. I agree it's "rather annoying" In programming terms it's the right thing to to, run parallel threads and fully utilise the resources available - you don't worry about overheating the processor since that should not happen in a properly designed and built system.
So check your BIOS settings to make sure any settings there are correct. If the machine is still under warranty then take it back to the supplier and tell them the thermal management isn't right. Other than that, you may have to start investigating the hardware - is the heatsink and fan up to the job, is the headsink properly mated to the processor, and so on. I'd not suggest getting into this yourself unless you know what you are doing - find someone that does since it's easy to make matters worse.
As I mentioned above, at first I was doing photos in small batches (or or two events or folders at a time) and allowing the processor to cool down in between (you need a utility that will tell you the core temperature to do this). This is a right PITA though. Then I found there is a utility in Apple's dev tools for turning off cores for testing - turning off a core made things run more slowly but meant that the processor didn't overheat and I could just leave it. It may be worth looking in your BIOS and/or OS to see if there's something similar - or a means of turning down the clock speed.

  • Primay computer crash. How to sync with a new one?

My primary computer crashed and just good to be trashed. Did not have any backup of course. Get a new laptop/window 7. Now if I try to sync the music with my Iphone, Itune keeps warning me this will delete all my music in my Iphone. How could I download all my Iphone music into my new laptop?

Open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.
If at any point you get a message that your iPod is linked to another library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
If you want to recover the music from the iPhone and transfer it to your computer there are a few things you can do. iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
Purchased applications can be downloaded over again, see this article for details: How to redownload purchased applications from the App Store
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchased songs and in some cases, videos and games) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod Touch or iPhone. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer data (such as playcounts and ratings), movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well.

  • IPad Photo Sync never ends....

    Hi there,
I tried syncing a folder containing several thousand photos a while ago and then cancelled the sync without letting it finish.
Since then I cannot sync any photos onto my iPad, even folders containing only a few photos. The itunes sync just runs and runs... The only way I can complete a sync is if I deselect photos completely.
I've tried rebooting the iPad but to no avail.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

I had the EXACT same issue with my almost-new IPAD. Spent several hours on the phone with the apple technician and even tried to restore the IPAD to factory settings. Eventually did this - disconnected the IPAD from the computer, deleted the IPOD PHOTO CACHE folder from the "pictures" folder (I am syncing to an Apple Mac) and re-tried the sync to just one folder with photos and now everything works - no infinite loop while syncing.

  • IPad Photo Sync

I copied pictures from a friends computer to my IPad using his ITunes.  The pictures show up fine on my IPad.  When I connect my IPad to my home computer I am not able to transfer the pictures from the IPad to my home computer. Suggestions?

If you want to transfer computer-synced photos back to a computer then there are third-party apps that you use e.g. Simple Transfer (which also has a free 'lite' version called Simple Photo & Video Transfer) which can use your wifi network to transfer to/from your computer.

  • My computer crashed; how can I sync to another without info loss?

EDIT: ACK! I put this in the wrong section D: Sorry ._.
My computer crashed last night, so now I'm on my mother's. I'd like to sync this iPod to it so that I can back up all of the files, just in case something happens to my iPod.
However, iTunes has sensed that my iPod is synced with another, which I can't reach anymore, seeing as my computer can't even turn on.
How do I get around this? I really can't afford to lose everything. I've already lost about $10 of music that I never got around to putting on my iPod...
Someone please help </3 I've had a very, very bad day...

Playing from iTunes without downloading is streaming during play.  iPod can't stream unless it is a version with wifi. So you need to download files then syn iPod with iTunes.
I do this for my iPod since my wife and I use same iTunes account.  If I allow auto syncing it mixes my podcasts with hers, subscriptions, plays, and deletes.

  • IPad photos sync forces iPad restart

I have 9,900 photos in iPhoto.
If I add some & resync from iTunes it optimizes then syncs - seems OK.
when I start photos on the iPad it says Please wait. Updating library...
This lasts a minute or two then the screen goes black.
If I leave it alone then in a minute or two it beeps and forces an iPad restart with the apple symbol along with the non spinning version of the busy symbol.
After the reboot - if I select photos this starts all over again.
If in iTunes I turn off photo syncing and delete all the photos from the iPad, then turn syncing back on again and resync the iPad everything works fine - but this loop takes FOREVER!
    Rebuiding iPhoto database now...

I found and told Apple that I have constant entries into my area Users/Kay/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/Kay Fisher's iPad/*
For instance I had 33 entries created the day I send the data to Apple that looked like:

They all look something like this:
