Computer dead

Hi,
Over the past two days I had a problem with my mac mini -- it stopped letting me log in. It would just pop me back to the login screen after accepting the password. I ended up having to erase and install the whole OS, then copy my old account information back into a new account I set up with the same name.
It was working yesterday when I left -- I got all my apps reinstalled and all the OS updates applied etc.
Today -- it's dead. Won't start up, gets stuck on the grey spinning thing at the start. Trying to start in single-user mode, it starts but gets stuck at 'CSRHIDTransitionDriver::start booting in single user ... will wait for window Server"
I tried booting from the CD (which won't work with a new keyboard, only an old one?) and while I can repair the disk, it finds no problems. I try to repair the permissions from the boot CD, however, and it just goes away forever, the DVD drive clacking away. I can let it run for hours and it doesn't seem to make any progress.
Do I have to start over with a total reinstall?
Thanks
Bob

Hey Bob,
I suspect some type of hardware issue here.. could be the computer itself, or the drive.
First, do you have a 2nd Mac or a friend who has one who can help you out?
If so, I'd put your computer in Target Disc Mode, connect it to your 2nd Mac, and on your 2nd Mac select your drive as the start up drive, and re-start the 2nd Mac. (BIG NOTE -- this will only work if both of them are PPC or Intel.... mixing up the two most likely won't work)
This will get the 2nd Mac to boot from your drive. If it does, at least you'll know that the drive works and your software is in tact, and your most likely looking at some hardware issue.
You can try the reverse as well. Put the 2nd Mac in Target Disc Mode, connect it to your Mac, start up your Mac, then press and continue to hold down the Option key. You can then choose what drive to boot from.. you'll want to choose the drive in the 2nd Mac. If everything starts up as normal, then your hardware isn't the problem.
While connected, best to copy as much as you can from your HD to the 2nd Mac, so that in case you really need to start over, you won't loose any data.
If I had to guess.... I'd say there is an issue with your hard drive.... but that's only a guess. Disk Utility can look for, and repair some things.. but not all things, and even if it's really damaged, DU may report it as being ok.
Now without a 2nd Mac to give you a hand, I'd do my best to get as much data off your drive as possible, then erase and install the OS. Forget about all your apps for the moment..... just get the OS installed, and see how that goes for a few days.

  • Old Computer dead: all music/mov/photos on ipod, need to transfer

My old computer is dead, I just want to transfer the gigabytes of music/movies/photos currently on my ipod over to my new computer. I thought it would be a user friendly breeze, but it looks likes it much harder than i expected and I need help
(btw i managed to transfer apps and i saw some message about 1 out of a max of 5 something and de-authorizing but I cant de-authorize anything or do anything else on my old computer)
    thanks

This is one of the many reasons that maintaining a backup is basic. Just use your backup to put everything on the new computer.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup (terrible idea), then you can transfer itunes purchases from your ipod. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases

  • ITunes library Home Sharing when original computer dead

Hi, my original iTunes library is on my old HP Laptop.  When I want to access my iTunes library from my MacBook Air (through Home Sharing) I need to have  iTunes open on my HP or iTunes on my MacBook won't find/recognise my library; however my old laptop is about to die so how do I access my iTunes library once this computer is dead (recently had the HP in for fixing and therefore couldn't access iTunes library).  Can my MacBook access my iTunes library in the smae way as my iPhone 5 does i.e. not through Home Sharing?

OK thanks, I've been trying to use my iphone to transfer purchases but i keep getting the error message that this computer is not authorized to play these songs although i have authorized it. ive even deauathorized and reauthorized with no luck

  • Old computer dead how to I transfer from my ipod

Same question I know. Never backed up my Itunes my old compputer is dead!!!! Is there any way to get my music onto my new computer through ITunes. If I sync even 1 new song onto my ipod my old music will be erased. Any new and interesting ways to save my music

What I did, assuming that you have bought the music via iTunes store, if not then I don't know. But anyways, what I did is, I sent a message to customer support via email, they get back to be in a couple of days. I described what happened with the computer, and they were nice enough to let me re-download all of my songs. Sorry if this doesn't help, but I tried.

  • Old computer dead.  How do I sync my iPad's contents to a new computer?

My computer died, and all the data with it. Have a new computer with iTunes. How do I get the iPad do dump all its data to the new computer's iTunes?
    Anyone?

This is one reason why maintaining a backup of all important data on your computer's hard drive is important stored on an external drive or some other external media used for backup purposes only which should include your iTunes library.
iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPod/iPhone/iPad, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased from the iTunes store only.
First you need to authorize your new computer with your iTunes account with iTunes. With your iPad connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPad.
Before syncing contacts and calendar events with an empty supported address book and calendar application, enter one contact in the address book and one calendar event in the calendar application on your computer. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select.
Photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync/transfer process is a one way transfer process only. Photos transferred from your computer are optimized for viewing on the iPad as part of the iTunes sync/transfer process - the original resolution of these photos is reduced. There are 3rd party paid utilities available that provide for transferring this data in the opposite direction with an iPhone, but if successful the original resolution of these photos will be lost in the process. Photos store on your computer's hard drive should be included with your computer's backup also.

  • Computer dead since updating to Maverick... HELP

    I own a 1.6.8 imac bought in 2010.
I tried to update to Maverick and forgot to back up my data (my stupidity).
Now whenever I try to boot up, Maverick installer gets an error, saying disk is damaged.
Apparently the solution to that is to repair your disk in disk utility.
However, the repair disk button is greyed out- apparently means that the computer decided it's not repairable.
    So my only option is:
    - back up the disk on external hard drive to save the data, and erase the entire disk.
But when I try to create a disk image, or restore with source: Mackintosh Hd to destination: external hard drive,
    I get an input/output error.
The setting on the hard drive is mac (journaled), with 1 tb left for storage.
What can I do next to save my data before erasing the entire disk?
Any help would be greatly appreciated... I've been gruelling through this for too long.

The Snow Leopard install DVD will contain OS X 10.6.3, which was the latest retail version sold by Apple; all subsequent versions came as updates.
When you boot up this install DVD, you can't access Disk Utility right away. You must go through the install routine first, i.e. choose your language, until the Tools menu is available, at which point you can open Disk Utility. That's where you can choose to wipe your drive out if you want to.
Reinstalling without erasing your drive shouldn't remove all your personal data, but the old "archive and install" option you could use in Tiger is no longer valid in SL. It means that although your documents will still be there, the content of your user account's library will be overwritten. All your applications preferences will be gone.
Up to you. Now, from the install DVD, you should have access to the content of your startup volume. You should be able to copy your personal data onto another drive at that point.

  • Old Computer Dead, But Hard Drive Ok

    HELP !!
I've been trying for hours to transfer my itunes library from the old hard drive (connected by a USB into my new computer). It appears to have moved after "importing" but itunes on the new computer is unable to play the songs, despite the fact that the songs are listed correctly in the new library.
The old hard drive is in a little box and can now only be accessed via my new computer.
Can someone please help, I'm pulling my hair out !!
    Thanks,
    Jon.

    Adibob,
thank you so much for your reply.
After your prompt I have shifted all my music from the external hard drive onto the laptop. So now I have iTunes and all the music on the same hard drive. How do I get the music into the library?
It sounds like it should be so simple but I just can't manage it. I would really appreciate your "input".
    Many thanks,
    Jon

  • Finder flashes and disappears at top.  Computer dead on only one account.

My iMac G4 (800 mhz) running the latest update/version of Tiger is suddenly acting up on one account only. On other accounts, no problem. On the problem account, the finder bar appears and disappears about every second. I can start to open applications (Word, Safari, etc.), but they close before fully opening. No recent changes to the computer and only safe internet surfing (to the best of my knowledge).
My 12-year-old son's homework program is on the account in turmoil. Help, please! Thank you...

If you don't mind using the Terminal you can get into any account using super user commands. The slickest, and most dangerous way, is to kill Finder and relaunch it as root. The safest way is to launch Terminal from /Applications/Utilities. Next you want to go into the other user's Prefs folder, so type this and hit the Return key:
    sudo -s
give your admin password, which is not echoed to the screen, and hit the Return key again. Your regular user name will be changed to root. You can now do whatever you please. Navigate to the other account's Prefs folder:
    cd /Users/otheraccount/Library/Preferences
hit the Return key, then type ls and hit Return to see a list of all the Preferences. Here's a sample of me accessing that folder in my test account (short name is revelator) and asking for a list of the files:
    Tiger:~ francine$ sudo -s
    Tiger:~ root# cd /Users/revelator/Library/Preferences
    Tiger:/Users/revelator/Library/Preferences root# ls
From the list of files you can then copy of the name of what you want to remove and paste it in the remove command or type it:
    Tiger:/Users/revelator/Library/Preferences root# rm com.apple.finder.plist
After you finish removing the files type
    exit
    and hit Return.

  • Computer dead (sbod) after losing webDAV connection

    _The scenario:_
To not have to put the memory card of my mobile (Nokia E70) into a card reader, use a cable or transfer several 100 MB using Bluetooth, I am using Apache (raccoon) on the mobile to supply a WebDAV service and connect my iMac 2.16 OSX 10.4.11 with this share point using WLAN. This usually works fine, my SD card is visible like any other volume on the Mac and accessible at a reasonable speed.
    _The problem:_
    a) If I forget to unmount (eject) the WebDAV drive before turning off WLAN and stopping Apache, the Mac hangs as soon as I try to do anything concerning that volume. It ask if it should eject - but it never does. It results in a spinning beach ball of death. It is also not possible to restart the computer, it seems to wait for that volume to get ejected. There is no timeout, I waited several hours. Trying to restart Finder gives the answer: Couldn't start application Finder (Error -600). Only help is to press Power for some seconds to turn the computer off hard.
    b) Accepting a) I was careful not to forget to unmount. Now there seems to be another restriction: Multiple copies at the same time also cause the bad behavior. This means my workarund doesn't help for sure.
    _The questions:_
    1) Is there a solution for my problem using Tiger? It would perfectly acceptable for me to reconnect. But I don't want to restart the Mac.
    2) Would an update to 10.5 Leopard help?

Thank you for the fast answer.
The cause for the problem (at least in this case) was not that a Mac went to sleep, but that the Apache server on the mobile a) was turned off by me b) didn't cope fine with more than one copy act (at least I assume it was server's fault).
"Leopard is more forgiving" is very general, I can't judge by this statement if Leopard could help in my case. Is it more forgiving using file shares and having timeouts, or does it handle sleep mode better (this wouldn't help me at all), or does it contain changes regarding WebDAV?
I am aware that I should run disk maintenance. But as OSX doesn't seem to have write caches without timeouts like system 7-9 had I didn't do it every time as I waited long enough before turning off. Additionally OSX already does some kind of file system check when initializing. But thank you for this hint, will do it as a precaution.
Did search for processes that seem to hang when it happened. Didn't find it.

  • Computer Dead...need to put music on my new computer

Please help. My computer has died, trying to get the music on my iPod onto my laptop. How can i get it there without losing the 2500 songs on my iPod? I have emailed support and they can't seem to understand what I am trying to do. I am not trying to transfer purchases. I want to move everything to a laptop, since my old computer died and I can't export the library.
    Thanks so much.

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you only want to copy your purchases to the computer that can be done using iTunes, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (including purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iPodRip Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Toshiba 'Critical" Update WinPhlash64 freezes computer dead

wtf... I have a Satellite T135D and noticed a critical update needed to be applied in the Toshiba Service Station icon.  It updated and then installed and ran WinPhlash64.  It started flashing the BIOS and then froze halfway thru.  I know how critical of an update this is so I took a video proving the computer was unresponsive fearing the worst... I leave it on for 45 mins and call Toshiba tech support.  I tell hiim the computer is not off and it is in the same state as it was when it froze.  He told me to shut off the computer so I tried the power button.. no go he tells me to unplug the power and take out the battery to shut it off.  I told him i didnt wanna do this because it was flashing the BIOS and i know how critical of an operation it is.  He told me to proceed so i did so knowing i have the video, the convo is being recorded, and the computer is still under warranty.  So u know what happens next obviously.. my fxxxin computer wont turn on now.  And all he can say is sorry that was a critical update now u need to pay $15 and drop it off at UPS... wtf?? i knew what was happening the whole time i shouldnt have to pay for this.  I dunno what to do... isnt it bs tho?!!
