Computer Died need to sync from i-pod to i-tunes

My Brother did something to my computer and just decided to reinstall Windows and was not smart enough to back everything up. So now I'm slowly putting things back on. I started first with my I-Pod and now I have a hugh issue.... How do I get the songs from my I-Pod in I-Tunes? I've been able to sync my purchased music just fine but I want my other 1000 songs also.
Thanks

The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

SharePod Windows Only
iPodRip Mac & Windows

There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

    Hello tysonmgr,
    And welcome to Apple Discussion
I think your option here would be to copy the music currently on your iPod to your new computer. From there, you can restore the iPod via iTunes and then sync all your old and new content to it.
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. Also keep in mind that the articles may be written for Windows XP, so the steps might have to be altered slightly.
Actually this article here was written for both Windows XP and Vista.

You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

    Yes.
What you need to do is Transfer the iTunes Library from your Old computer to your New computer...
Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..
Backup iTunes to an External Drive
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751
An Added Bonus is that you will have a Backup of iTunes.

If you still have the old computer see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
If you don't have your old computer, but you made regular backups of it, restore the most recent backup using the backup software that you used to make the backup. You will have to read the instructions for it.

  • Iphone and computer died, need to get the files from hard drive

Iphone and computer died at the same time, my hard drive on the computer is ok, i did a external connection of my hard drive to my laptop, my iphone was backed up on itunes on the computer which are on the hard drive, how do i extract contacts and other files from the hard drive thanks

If the old drive is not accessible then, no, you will not be able to access all your files on it. In this case you may need to look at the following:
    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location. OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • School issued iPad--message that iPad is controlled by another computer.  I need to sync from my home computer.  How would I do this?

school issued iPad2 is controlled by another computer.  I have to download from my home computer.  How do I make this happen?

An iPad is designed to sync or connect with only one computer. Your schoool issue iPad was set up using a school computer most likely and that is the one that will sync wi the pad. Attempting to supync with a different computer will create problems. I suggest not doing that.
    I see two solutions,
    1. Email the docs you need to transfer from your computer to the email account that is on your iPad.
    2. Copy the material from your computer and transfer that to the schools computer. Check with your Information Tech person at your school to see what might be best.

  • My computer died, how to sync without....

Hello all. Well my dilemma is that my dell laptop has died. This was the computer I used to sync my iPhone. Now it has been several weeks since I have synced my iPhone so I am needing to so I will not loose any information in case my iPhone crashed. In the past several weeks I have purchased several apps and do not want to loose them in the sync process. When I go to sync my iPhone to my daughters computer (there is not any iPhone's synced to this computer), it states that all existing apps on my iPhone will be replaced from the iTunes library (iTunes Library is empty). I take it as the apps on my iPhone will be deleted. I only have around $40 worth of apps so far but still I do not want to loose them. Syncing to my daughters computer is only temporary until I get me a new laptop. Then I will sync only to the new computer. Which will not be for a couple months though. Is it possible to sync to my daughters computer without loosing my apps, also my music, contacts, etc. Thanks for your help.
    little more info.
    My iPhone is 16g 3Gs software v. 3.1.2
My dead dell computer was running windows xp
My daughters computer is a Toshiba Satelitte running windows Vista. and no other iPhone was ever synced to her computer.
    Again thanks alot

    Welcome to the discussions,
Transfer your purchases and back up manually and keep on syncing on this computer. Here's how to:
Authorize the new computer in the Store menu. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your phone, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures taken with the phone and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer. Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your phone got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored again from the manual backup you made.
Repeat this process when you'll switch to your new computer.

Apps can be downloaded again for free: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

  • Computer died - how to sync?

My computer that I usually back-up/sync my iPhone to has died & the only other computer I have access to has someone else's iTunes on it. How do I back-up/sync either using this computer (and not over-writing the data) or something other way??

You don't. Iphone will sync itunes content and pics to one computer. When you sync to another, it will erase the current content and replace with content from the new computer.
You need to move everything from your backup copy of your old computer to the new one. Then you can sync the iphone without losing anything, as all of the info will be transferred to the new computer.

  • Old computer died need to put itunes on new one

old computer died have no access to it need to put my old itunes on new laptop

See this User Tip for an alternative approach.
Use SyncToy to create a clone of your library on an external hard drive.
Connect the drive to the new computer, install SyncToy again and use the Sync option to copy the library in the other direction.
(ideally before installing iTunes so you don't have to remove an empty library or run the risk of it corrupting your backup.)
Update the backup periodically to guard against disaster in the future.

  • Apps showing on computer but won't sync to i-pod

Hope someone can help .... I had a 4th generation i-pd touch for xmas and couldn't wait to get started with apps. I have downloaded several free apps which appear in my i-tunes on the computer but when I attach the i-pod it says it is syncing but the apps don't appear on my i-pod
HELP!! I'm not very tech savvy and don't know what to do ....

When the iPod is connected to iTunes, you should see the Summary screen. Just along from the title Summary you should see the Apps pane. Select that and check the box to Sync Apps. Make sure you actaully Sync after that.

  • How can I copy playlists from i pod to i tunes library on new computer

I bought a new computer and had the contents of my old system transferred.  So my i tunes library is on my new computer but none of my playlists. My playlists are still on my i pod. How can I use my  ipod to get my playlists back into my i tunes library on my computer?

Sorry, may I ask, are you running Mac or Windows and which version of iPod?
If you want to transfer playlist from your iPod to the new Computer, you need 3rd party software, here is an earlier post by iSmn
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/1531866#1531866
But since you got your old system transferred, this mean that your library and your playlist are in the new Computer.
So you got to point the iTunes to where your old iTunes library is, here is the link for Migrating the iTunes library in your Mac, but if you arre using Windows, there is a link there for Windows System..
